Violin making and music, seminars and concerts, famous soloists and
expert craftsmen, exhibitions, performances featuring instruments made
by Stradivari, Amati and Guarneri: in 2016 the Museo del Violino will
continue to promote a vision of culture as encounter and exchange between
different skills and arts on an international level. This was inspired by
constant relations with the local territory and with its rich cultural texture,
with present-day violin makers, the Accademia Walter Stauffer, the
university research laboratories housed in the Museum’s building and
specialized training institutions such as the International School of Violin
Making and CR Forma.

The Messiah Stradivari
comes back to Cremona
From the Ashmolean Museum of Oxford
the most precious violin in the world
September 15th | December 18th
Beautiful, but unapproachable: unlike many violins built by Antonio
Stradivari, famous for their extraordinary timbre features, the
Messiah violin has hardly ever been played. Its celebrity arises from
its exceptional state of preservation, with its nearly untouched
varnish, as if it had just come out of Stradivari’s workshop. For this
reason it is a symbol and a stylistic reference point for violin makers
worldwide.
This violin is believed to have been purchased by the collector Cozio
da Salabue directly from Paolo Stradivari, son of Antonio, in 1775.
It was then sold to the trader Luigi Tarisio in 1827: sale details were
written inside the top plate by Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume, who bought
the violin in 1855.
Tarisio often boasted about owning this outstanding instrument, so
much so that the soloist Delphin Alard is supposed to have
exclaimed: “Your violin is like a Messiah. Always awaited, never
appearing”.
It was later acquired by the London firm “W. E. Hill and Sons” and
finally, in 1939, entrusted to the Ashmolean Museum, with the
restriction of not being moved nor played, in order to be preserved
as a model for future violin makers.
Today it is displayed in Oxford, at the Ashmolean Museum, next to
the prestigious University. Since 1939 it has hardly been moved but
in 2016, on the occasion of its 300th anniversary, it is returning
exceptionally to Cremona, on exhibition from September 15th to
December 18th at the Museo del Violino.

“L’Accademia Stauffer in concerto” is a festival
organized by the Fondazione Stauffer in collaboration
with the Museo del Violino, conceived with the aim of
promoting the extraordinary talent of the young
musicians who every year attend the prestigious classes
of the Accademia “Walter Stauffer” of Cremona,
internationally recognized as an excellence
centre and a reference point for the
education of bowed instrument
musicians. Thanks to four concerts at
the Museo del Violino Auditorium it
will be possible to appreciate the
high artistic and educational value
of the Academy. Since 1985 – year
of its foundation within the Centro
di Musicologia “Walter Stauffer” of
Cremona – the Academy has been
offering annual post-graduate
courses to train string players in the
performance of chamber music and
solo repertoire. The specialization
courses are held by
Salvatore Accardo (violin)
Bruno Giuranna (viola)
Antonio Meneses (cello)
Franco Petracchi (double-bass).
Moreover, since 2011 the
Academy has been promoting a
specialization course for string
quartets held by the Quartetto di
Cremona.

SEMINARS
From Stradivari’s up to
present day workshops
300 years of violin making know-how
On December 5th, 2012 UNESCO registered the “traditional Cremona
violin making know-how” into the Representative List of the World’s
Intangible Cultural Heritage. Cremonese makers have been building
bowed and stringed instruments since the 16th century. An indissoluble
link connects late-Renaissance to contemporary workshops. Antonio
Stradivari’s method reveals itself not only through his instruments but
even more through the artifacts coming from his workshop – wooden
moulds, drawings, patterns, tools – currently exhibited at the Museo
del Violino. Through the analysis of these materials we can understand
each step of the building process used by the master as well as its
design phase. The seminars are held by masters from Cremona,
winners of the Concorso Triennale, teachers of the Scuola di Liuteria
and heirs of a great family tradition: Vinicio Bissolotti, Stefano Conia,
Marcello Ive, Dante Fulvio Lazzari, Simeone Morassi, Marco Nolli,
Primo Pistoni, Giorgio Scolari, Francesco Toto.

EXHIBITION
CONCERTO
PER
SOFONISBA
An homage to
Sofonisba Anguissola
by Gabriella Benedini
curated by Paolo Bolpagni
There is a connection between celestial bodies and the length of strings
which make citharas and harps vibrate, as Pitagora observed a long
time ago. Talking about music means talking about numbers, measures,
notes. The universe is music. In her exhibition at the Museo del Violino,
Gabriella Benedini pays homage to Sofonisba Anguissola. It is an encounter between two women and two artists. “Relating music to Sofonisba Anguissola” - said Benedini – “means making the deep strings
of time reverberate in a place that has become the temple of violin making, a precious place bringing together the creativity, knowledge, manual skills, calculation, elegant precision of our violin makers”. The
sculptures of Cremona-born artist Gabriella Benedini metaphorically
echo the shape of musical instruments. Gillo Dorfles once wrote about
the latter: “Maybe these are not sounds but ultrasounds emitted not by
material objects but by immaterial forms conceived, designed and then
mysteriously shaped by the artist assembling material he/she has
found, handled and bent according to secret aims”. In the “Concerto
per Sofonisba” exhibition, the artist – just like a violin maker of old –
creates a multitude of imaginary musical instruments that have been
enriched, over time, with shapes, with materials and synthesis in the
quest for the ideal metamorphosis, with poetic resonance and with the
art of the much-admired Sofonisba.

Stradivari Quartett
Second Edition - April 16th – May 24th
Giovanni Arvedi Auditorium - 9.15pm
Stradivari Quartett
friends of STRADIVARI is an international network launched in 2009 bringing together those who own, use, keep in custody or study masterpieces
of Cremona’s classical violin making tradition. Thanks to this project, the
Museo del Violino temporarily hosts prestigious instruments made by
Stradivari, Amati, Guarneri, Rugeri on loan from public and private collections worldwide. These precious instruments are played by world-renowned soloists in concerts and performances that can be enjoyed only
at the Museo del Violino.
The musical programs features a great variety of forms and genres, composers, periods and styles.
Anna Serova and Filippo Faes will retrace Twentieth-century music with
two ravishing sonatas by Rachmaninov and Shostakovich expressing
two opposite and complementary feelings of nostalgia. Elegance and
taste will echo in the Sonatas for violin and piano by Wolfgang Amadeus
Mozart played by Caterina Demetz and Federica Bortoluzzi. Luca Fiorentini will pay an important homage to Lisa Cristiani and her “Stauffer”
Stradivari cello while the double bass, leaving aside its accompanying
role, will become the protagonist of two concerts played by Tommaso Bagnati with the Quartetto Guadagnini and Enrico Fagone accompanied by
Roberto Paruzzo.
The Stradivari Quartett will bring on the Giovanni Arvedi Auditorium stage
a whole set of instruments made by the great luthier while Federico Guglielmo and Diego Cantalupi will celebrate a one-time encounter between
the Andrea Amati Carlo IX, one of the most ancient violins in the world,
and the Sabionari 1679, the only Stradivari guitar that can still be played
out of the five remaining ones.

Two catalogues about the extraordinary heritage currently exhibited in
the Museo del Violino have been published over the years. The first catalogue, edited by Simone Fernando Sacconi, was published in 1972, and
the second one, edited by Andrea Mosconi and Carlo Torresani, appeared
15 years later. In both cases, the catalogues included only the technical
files of the 709 objects considered as coming from Stradivari’s workshop
that were previously exhibited in the Museo Civico. In this new volume,
the complete catalogue of more than 1.300 artifacts that come from the
workshops of Antonio Stradivari and Enrico Ceruti will be available for the
first time. The accurate historical reconstruction, the study of the previous
two catalogues, the paleographic and scientific investigations will cast a
new light on this extraordinary heritage that is indissolubly linked to the work
of Stradivari and to the traditional violin making craftsmanship recognized
by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Performances on historical instruments
from the MdV Collections
Only at the Museo del Violino it is possible
to listen to the sound of Stradivari’s, Amati’s
and Guarneri’s magnificent instruments, reliving in the hands of expert soloists, to
experience moments of unforgettable
poetry. The natural stage for these
masterpieces is the Giovanni Arvedi

architecture tries to “catch” the sound to turn
it into images; music, naturally intangible,
takes shape, becomes material: the
everlasting and the evanescent merge
together in an eternal exchange in the place
that celebrates the great violin making
tradition of Cremona.

JANELLO TORRIANI
A genius of the Renaissance
Janello Torriani is one of the now-forgotten great
protagonists of the age bridging the
Renaissance and the Scientific
Revolution. A skilled blacksmith,
renowned clockmaker, brilliant
hydraulic engineer, court
mathematician and celebrated
inventor, during his lifetime he gained
a reputation that spread far beyond his
hometown. His name was known in Germany,
the Netherlands, England and, above all, in the
Iberian Peninsula. Among his most famous
inventions are the first gear-cutting machine
tool, the cardanic suspension, the first
planetarium spring clock (requiring 20 years
and 1800 mechanical parts), the first massive
water engine in history, built in Toledo, which
could lift water to a height of 100 metres along
a path of 300 metres, and the first portable
spring mills. He also contributed to the
Gregorian Calendar Reform, to large-scale
astronomic projects, to the construction of
automata and to many other achievements in
mathematics and hydraulic engineering. The
exhibition has been organized in close
collaboration with Fundación Juanelo Turriano
and with the scientific support of the Centre
Alexandre Koyré (EHESS) of Paris, the Max
Planck Institute for the History of Science of
Berlin, the Patrimonio Nacional de España,
the University of California-Davis, the Medici
Archive Project (U.S.A.- ITALY) and other
prestigious Italian and international
institutions. The display will include
exhibits from European and US
museums, state-of-the-art technological
devices and urban paths. Furthermore, an
international congress of high scientific profile will be held during the
period of the exhibition.

There are just a few instruments in
the world having the same symbolic
and historical meaning as the “Carlo
IX” violin made in 1566ca by Andrea
Amati. The definition of masterpiece
could not be more appropriate: it
was its maker who developed, in the
mid Sixteenth century, the main
features of the violin family that,
except for some changes in the
proportions of violas and cellos, are
still the same today.
On the occasion of its 450th
anniversary, the Museo del Violino
pays homage to this precious
instrument and its brilliant maker in
the same year when the city of
Cremona is to dedicate an exhibition
to the engineer and inventor Janello
Torriani, also an eminent figure in
Sixteenth-century Cremona.

Learning at the Museum
The Museum’s visit is led by specialized guides who make the experience suitable for students of different ages and skills levels. The youngest kids can learn step by step how precious wood is shaped into
instruments with their own unmistakable sound by the expert hands of
craftsmen. The violin is discovered in a fairytale-like atmosphere and
also through engaging interactive activities provided by multimedia installations.
Educational workshops introduce kids and teenagers to the violin
making world with a multi-sensorial approach also relying on material
objects while in-depth lessons provide a chance to learn about violinrelated historical aspects.
This experience is crowned by enthralling performances played on
ancient violins belonging to the Museum’s collections. Listening is guided by the musician who briefly presents each piece of music to the
audience.
