Feedback I have received
from salon owners is that this
has been a hit and miss
summer. Early heat waves
led to a decline in the
number of sunbed sessions
taken during these periods,
but the following wet weather
in August meant those who
had a taste for a tan made their way back
to their high street salon.
The onset of Autumn now offers immense
business opportunities, with Joe Public
having returned from their oversees
holidays, the kids are back at school, the
nights are drawing in, and people are
looking to maintain the feeling of wellness
gained during those two precious weeks
away. Your clients, and any potential new
clients, need to be reminded that they still
deserve some ‘me’ time now that they’re
back home.
It’s also a time when they are likely to have
the least financial commitments; the
holiday has been paid for but Christmas
still seems too far away for any significant
early spending.
It’s your job, as a salon owner or manager,
to capitalise on this. Of course you need to
offer quality treatments that deliver results.
However, you also need to market these in
the right way. Clients will not wander
through your doors uninvited, nor will they
be aware of the treatments you are offering
if you don’t advertise them.
How you choose to promote your services
is down to the individual salon; it will be
dictated by what treatments you offer, what
your marketing budget is, what your profit
margins are and what advertising medium
is available to you. A great mistake made
by many small business owners is taking
the skills involved in marketing lightly.
Unless you take this seriously you will
waste money and put your livelihood in
jeopardy. If you are unsure about marketing
- and to many people this is a very
daunting area - why not enrol on a course
aimed at small business owners and take
a positive step towards boosting your
business.

industry, I have seen businesses open one
small shop and grown into a large chain of
shops - the success stories! Of course, I’ve also
witnessed the unsuccessful shops.
No one can guarantee you complete success but a
little knowledge can go a long way to help you achieve
your goal. I have put together a series of questions that
we frequently get asked by the salon operator.
Q What
sort
of tanning
equipment
should I buy?
The key is to offer a variety of vertical and lie down
equipment; this then caters for all types of
customers. Some people prefer vertical tanning,
the majority of this equipment is operated with
high wattage 200-235w lamps and control gear.
This type of bed appeals to people with a busy
lifestyle, who want a short session with quick
results. They can take the session in their lunch break; it’s easier to keep
clean and as the session times are short, more customers can utilise the
unit, which means more profit!
Lie down sunbeds are for the customer who wants a more relaxing session.
They can still get quick results, so a 160w lie down is more suitable for this
purpose.
There are various manufacturers and plenty of choice, and there are different
financial packages also on offer from various companies.
Q What
lamps
should I
use?
This question is one of the most common and
causes lots of confusion. There are various lamps
in the market place from the cheaper branded
lamp to the high quality lamp - each company will
tell you that their particular lamp is best, so it’s
really easy to get confused.
At UVL, we would advise that to get good quality
with a good price the key is to buy a well known brand from a recognised
manufacturer.
In order to supply the right lamp for your sunbed, we would check what
lamps and equipment you are currently using. We would then advise you
accordingly on the best options for your salon and how to increase turnover
in your area.

often
should I
retube?
Sunbed manufacturers will use the lamp
manufacturers specified hours which can range
from 500-1200 hours depending on the lamp
quality.
Most machines have an hour counter, so it’s
relatively easy to monitor the usage. Dependant on
the type of the bed and the lamp used, your
supplier should advise on an individual basis.
Q What do I
say to people
who are
worried about
skin cancer?
You need to show customers that you care about
them and their skin. Become a member of The
Sunbed Association, get their seal of approval and
then you can advertise that you are a member.
This will show your customers that you are part of
a well-established organisation.
