THE SFY NEIGHBORHOOD SENIOR CENTER A Program of the Samuel Field Y 58-20 Little Neck Parkway, Little Neck NY 11362 (718) 225 - 6750 July August 2016 Senior Center Spotlights FREE HEARING SCREENING New Classes And Teachers Tuesday, July 12 at 10:00-11:00 AM Thursday, July 28, 9:00-3:00 PM Summer brings us the opportunity to introduce several new classes and programs. We look forward to expanded art programming: How to Look At Art for the armchair enthusiast and Oil Painting, Ceramics and Find Your Hidden Artist for those who want hands on experiences. If the arts aren't your thing, try Ballroom Dancing or Haiku Writing (Japanese poetry, in English). Organize your photographs in the Scrapbooking class. Cooking and baking classes take place weekly. And, of course, we continue with old favorites: Opera Appreciation and Jazz Re-visited. See Page 5 for further information. EARTH without ART is “ EH” Come on July 12 to a special presentation by the Center for Hearing and Communication where you will learn about the various forms of hearing loss and new and innovative ways to improve your hearing. Make appointments for a hearing screening on July 28. They are available through appointment aboard the mobile unit of the Center for Hearing and Communication, a NYC-based non-profit organization. Note: This screening is intended for individuals who have not had a test recently or do not currently wear hearing aids. Assistive devices will be discussed if a follow-up session is needed. Please call the Senior Center Office to make your appointment (718-225-6750). Healthy Tummy, Healthy Life! We welcome Neda Pourat, New York State Certified Health Coach and holistic practitioner to the SFY Senior Center. Neda will be an important part of our Center’s Healthy Tummy, Healthy Life program. On the first Wednesday of each month, Neda will facilitate a healthy eating discussion/support group, open to everyone, with an emphasis on controlling diabetes. Two weeks later, on the third Wednesday of the month, she provides us with a cooking demonstration, highlighting those foods previously discussed. See pages 6 and 7 for details. Sponsored by the New York Foundation for Elder Care. We want to acknowledge how wonderful it is that our Senior Center continues to grow. A big welcome goes out to participants who come from all over Northeast Queens including Douglaston, Little Neck, Bayside, Whitestone, Flushing, Fresh Meadows, Floral Park and Bellerose. We are also grateful to our elected officials, (State Senator Tony Avella, State Assemblymen Ed Braunstein and David Weprin, City Councilmen Barry Grodenchik and Paul Vallone, and Queens Borough President Melinda Katz) for their continuing support of our programs. The Samuel Field Y Neighborhood Senior Center is made possible by the New York City Department for the Aging.
