Message from Honda Malaysia
“I am more than happy to be able to lead my new team into embracing the year 2013 with new
challenges as Honda Malaysia rises to even newer heights.”
As the Year of the Dragon draws to a close, Honda Malaysia has
undergone a dramatic shift from being affected by the 2011 events
to gaining a triumphant comeback with the launch of several iconic
models, such as the Honda Civic and the Honda Hybrid family.
During that period, I was fortunate to witness Honda Malaysia
bounce back from trying times while I was Head of Customer
Relations. Now, I have been given yet another amazing
opportunity to grow with Honda Malaysia as the new Head of
Spare Parts. I am more than happy to be able to lead my new
team into embracing the year 2013 with new challenges as
Honda Malaysia rises to even newer heights.
As you will be reading later on Page 12, we are proud to
announce the launch of the first locally-assembled Honda Jazz
Hybrid. We have been working very closely with our associates
in vehicle production at the Pegoh Plant as we anticipate a surge
of demand for hybrid technology. We are confident that the CKD
Honda Jazz Hybrid will make new headways in the automotive
industry as an affordable hybrid solution.
Not only that, we are in constant communication with our dealers
to ensure that after-sales service satisfaction can be met as
we expand our dealer network. By providing adequate training
on parts and inventory planning to Spare Parts Controllers and
Service Managers, we can ensure that our dealers meet customer
expectations with excellence. One of our newly established
dealers is Vimal Auto-Liner, which you can learn more on Page 14.
As the first Honda 3S Centre in Perlis, they will be able to bring
new values to the community with our products and services.
We have also made a remarkable progress with our range of hybrid
vehicles, acquiring 69 per cent of hybrid market share based on
sales results in January – October 2012*. Moving forward, we
will continue to forge new grounds of breakthrough with Honda’s
Power of Dreams, and we dearly hope that our customers will
look forward to more quality products and services by Honda in
the year 2013.
Have a great year ahead!

lanting the seeds of sustainability
Honda’s commitment to the environment runs
deep with Hello Woods.
When it comes to environmental protection, Honda’s reputation as a company
that cares goes back to the 1960’s when tree-planting and industrial water
recycling at Honda plants began.
Continuing the tradition of safekeeping the natural environment for our children,
Honda embarked in a forest restoration project known as ‘Hello Woods’. Situated
next to the Twin Ring Motegi track, the plan was to revive the vitality of the
42-hectare area using a satoyama-style ecosystem combining upland forests with
surrounding inhabited areas. With its launch in the summer of year 2000, Hello
Woods opened its doors to children and adults alike for them to connect with
nature through hands-on programmes and infrastructure.
Ryuichiro Sakino, Hello Woods Forest Producer, envisioned the site to be a haven
for playing and learning, with the highest importance placed on allowing children
to gain hands-on experience. Children can tap on their budding creativity through
woodworking projects or go on a nature trail and join the “Hello Woods Camp”
to discover an environment that is home to thousands of living species. Besides
that, they can also participate in an outdoor cooking programme that uses naturally
harvested ingredients while fully appreciating Mother Nature’s gifts to mankind.
Having celebrated 12 years of thriving success, Hello Woods is now a proud
testament to Honda’s will to turn dreams into reality.

Traversing through his musical journey of life
“Writing new songs that I love as much as I have
already done or love more, makes me feel like
I have done better and improved. That is the
biggest thrill.” OJ Law
Often mistaken as an up-and-coming musician, OJ Law has already
produced three albums to date. His blend of soulful singing and upbeat rock, electronica music make him a rarity in Malaysia’s indie
music scene and definitely a musician to watch out for.
At the tender age of five, his first introduction to music came in the
form of a Michael Jackson and a Kylie Minogue cassette tape. As
he continues to speak about his early musical memories, he fondly
reminisces about his father being an avid Beatles fan and strumming
the guitar or playing songs on his record player. As he grew older, his
range of musical influences also grew from the harmonic sounds of
the Beach Boys and the pop finesse of Michael Jackson to alternative
rock band Blur and other music from different genres like indie rock,
soul and electronica.
OJ moved from the UK to Malaysia at the age of 10, picked up the
guitar at 13 years old and knew he wanted to pursue his passion for
music. Albeit he did not have dreams of becoming a world-famous
rock star, but he discovered that composing songs came easily to him.
He draws inspiration from life experiences or things that people tell
him about and strongly believes in writing songs that he can empathise
with – a combination of ideas and feelings.
Returning to the UK for his undergraduate studies, he decided to set
up a band. By the time he had found a sound that worked for the band,
it was too late as the band disbanded shortly afterwards. It was also
during this period that he went through difficulties writing songs for his
vocal range. OJ grew to become more comfortable with his falsetto
and began writing songs that were tailored for him and stopped
worrying about what people thought of his singing.
7
Profile
The demise of his band also created another
musical chapter in his life – going solo.
Starting over from scratch, OJ had to go
through a lot of trial and error, but by applying
the things that he learned from his job as a
Sound Engineer certainly helped with the
production and recording aspect of his craft.
With every album he completed, he felt a
sense of achievement and accomplishment
and is amazed that “it is 99% only me. The
music, the production, the recording, the
playing, the hard work and even the financing
behind it.” His latest album “Yesterday
is a Distant Dream”, is a testament to his
hard work. The album contains an amazing
concoction of pop music with a mix of rock
and electronica, coupled with songs about
dealing with crossroads in his life.
Over the years, OJ came to a culmination
that music will always be a part of him
and says, “Without music I feel like there
is a massive hole in my character that I
am not allowing to exist.” He feels that a
lot of thought process is involved through
music and writing lyrics. Apart from it
being his creative outlet, it is almost like
therapy, to which he says, “It allows me
to reflect on things in my life and things
around me, putting things into perspective,
believing that it makes him into a better
person.”Regardless of how many shows he
will play or the amount of people listening to
his music in the future, he feels that those
are just an added bonus. The main passion
for him will always be the music. “Writing
new songs that I love as much as I have
already done or love more, makes me feel
like I have done better and improved. That is
the biggest thrill.”

onda Malaysia Racing Team’s Sepang 1,000km debut
“Racing is part of the Honda DNA – it is
the challenging spirit. By participating
in the race itself, we can help bring that
element to the team members’ lives.”
Mohamed Akkbar Danial (HMRT Team Principal)
Four years ago, the Sepang International Circuit (SIC)
organised a spin-off from the popular Malaysia Merdeka
Endurance Race (MMER), known as the Sepang 1000km
(S1K). Set to thrill fans from the 6th to 8th December this
year, the S1K will see production cars below 1900 cc and
drivers from around the region in this mini version of an
endurance race.
The Honda Malaysia Racing Team (HMRT) participated
in the MMER with the Integra and the Civic Type-R
models. As the global trend has shown a shift towards
smaller cars, and since the Honda Jazz will be produced
locally, Honda Malaysia saw this as a great opportunity
to feature the car in the S1K 2012.
Even though HMRT seems to be the underdog of the
race, there is no doubt that they will persevere and make
a shining impression on the tracks.
10
The Honda Malaysia Racing Team
In light of the natural disasters that struck Japan and
Thailand last year, HMRT decided to make a comeback
to boost the morale of their staff. With great teamwork
and highly-skilled crew members, HMRT intends to give
their all at S1K 2012.

Mohamed Akkbar Danial
As Team Principal and Head of Marketing for Honda Malaysia,
Mr Akkbar saw HMRT as a great opportunity for their staff to
enhance their knowledge and involvement in the S1K race. He
also adds that besides winning and being number one, great
teamwork is of great importance, “Racing is part of the Honda
DNA – it is the challenging spirit. By participating in the race
itself, we can help bring that element to the team members’
lives.”
The future looks bright and filled with endless possibilities for HMRT as Mr Akkbar reveals
that his 5-year plan would be to organize a one-make race with the Honda Jazz – where
owners, dealers from the Honda Jazz community can grow. This dream will also help grow
and strengthen the brand image of the Honda Jazz.

Thayalakumaran Dorai Rethinam
A pioneer of the HMRT, Mr Kumar has played an essential
role in the team. From the 2003 until 2010, his Race
Engineer role has now progressed to his current role
of Team Manager. He is in charge of the entire planning
that involves the race team. Mr Kumar also plays a role in
the team selection process, carefully selecting 22 crew
members from a pool of 40 potential candidates. His main
goal is to produce a reliable car within a minimum budget.
Mr Kumar reveals that one of the technical challenges HMRT face is that the Honda Jazz
is not a performance-based car; its modification will be mostly focused on its suspension
and a slight increase of the engine’s horse power. Time is also another challenge, since they
have to complete two cars in four months. Despite this, he is fully confident of the Honda
Jazz’s race performance.
Mohd. Henzee bin Hamzah
2006 – Malaysia Merdeka Endurance Race
1.6L class
Both drivers have been active with
motorsports for some time and have the
added experience in car development
with Honda. They both also share great
chemistry together – an essential ingredient
for great teamwork. Both drivers reveal that
race preparations have progressed well,
which involved a lot of health and fitness
preparations. Their main challenge would
be to achieve their own expectations of
finishing the race at a top position and going
against other teams that have been racing at
the event for five years. “A podium would
be great, but being champions would be
better,” shares Mr Henzee. They have great
confidence in their car and crew members,
Tengku Ezan proudly beams, “We’re going
to try even harder than anyone else. As a
team, it is about creating synergy, working
well together while achieving great things.”

Honda’s Pegoh Plant is the forerunner in
the country to produce the first ever locallyproduced hybrid car – the CKD Honda
Jazz Hybrid. The first fleet of cars which
was produced in November is the result of
Honda’s investment into transferring green
technology to Malaysia, bringing with it an
increase in economic benefits including
foreign direct investment (FDI), job creation
and technology transfer.
This milestone project is significant for
Honda, which produces hybrid vehicles in
only two other locations – Japan and the
United States. This landmark move is a
result of Honda’s confidence in Malaysia’s
capabilities and the positive appetite for
green cars, as statistics show that more
Malaysians are becoming environmentally
savvy.
12
Between January to October 2012, 10,034
units of hybrid vehicles were sold in
Malaysia. Out of these hybrid cars sold, 69
percent were Honda cars, showing Honda to
be a market leader in hybrid cars.
Government’s nod in the direction of green
technology via tax incentives, prices of
hybrid vehicles came down. Honda took
the first step to make hybrid cars even
more affordable when it became the first
car marque to announce its first locally
produced hybrid vehicles at its Pegoh Plant
in Alor Gajah in July this year.

Dealer’s Story
imal Auto-Liner inspires the future of Kangar
“Vimal Auto-Liner hopes to give our customers the
best in terms of service in return for their faith in us.”
– Dato’ Sugumaran, Owner of Vimal Auto-Liner.
Having recently opened its doors as Honda’s 61st dealer in Kangar,
Perlis in July 2012, Vimal Auto-Liner brings its touch of modernity to
the charming little town.
It all happened four years ago, when Director & Owner Dato’
Sugumaran, first applied for a Honda Dealership licence when he
noticed there were no Honda car dealerships in Perlis despite the
presence of other brands. He immediately seized this perfect
opportunity to introduce the first Honda Authorised 3S Centre in
Perlis and cater to the local demand of Honda cars. With a great team
working with him, Vimal Auto-Liner is prepared to provide the best
service and peace of mind to its customers.
The smooth daily operations of the 3S Centre is handled by Managing
Director Mr. Yudish G Dorai, who passionately assists their many
customers. He also reveals the potentially growing market for Honda
cars in Perlis, made up of young professionals like lecturers and
doctors. Vimal Auto-Liner saw the opening of the 3S Centre as a
great opportunity to provide more jobs for the local community since
jobs are scarce in Perlis, forcing many locals to work outside of Perlis.
Mr. Yudish says that they understand this and ensures their employees
have the right skills and knowledge to serve the customers by sending
them for regular Honda trainings.

Vimal Auto-Liner hopes to inspire both their

Honda’s wisdom on green technology and
the benefits of driving an eco-friendly Honda.

Vimal Auto-Liner proudly believes while they

important to put in more hard work towards
maintaining their customer relationship.
“Customer service will always be our number

customers, so in future should they decide
to upgrade to another Honda car model, they
will be at ease when they do so with us,”

comfortable hatchback a fuel rating of 118
miles per gallon of gasoline-equivalent
(MPGe); and an unprecedented low electric
consumption rating of only 29 kilowatt
hours (kWh) per 100 miles.
What this means is saving valuable dollars
without compromising on efficiency and
comfortable driving. In fact, the 2013 Honda
Fit EV helps consumers achieve more
mileage for each charging dollar, with an
EPA-rated annual fuel cost of only $500.
Powered by a 20-kWh lithium-ion (Li-ion)
battery, EPA gave the 2013 Honda Fit EV
18
a combined city and highway estimated
driving range rating of 82 miles.
The Honda Fit EV comes with Honda’s
advanced interactive remote control that
operates on the proprietary HondaLink™
system. HondaLink™ allows monitoring of
the current state of charge; commences
the charge and shows how long it would
take for the car to achieve a full charge.
The user can also set charging times to
benefit from off-peak charging rates. To
facilitate quick cooling in the cabin, the car’s
air-conditioning can be turned on with the
remote control within a 100 feet radius (30
meters). A smartphone application, the Fit
EV app allows these controls to be done
on iOS and Android-operated phones, and
Charging port can be found on the front side of the Fit EV.
Top: The gauge cluster lights up in different
colours depending on the mode of driving –
normal (White) to Econ mode (Green)
Bottom: The EV-Centric Gauges found on
the dashboard of the Fit EV is different
from the normal fuel gauge.
The spacious interior of the Honda Fit EV, fitted with
environmentally friendly plant-based seat fabric.
personal computers. The Fit EV’s navigation
system helps to locate public charging
stations*, making this car a convenient and
smart vehicle to zip about in.
The extraordinary design of its powertrain,
weight-conscious engineering and effective
aerodynamics works well with 2013 Honda
Fit EV’s smaller battery. It only takes less
than 3 hours for the Fit EV to be recharged
by connecting to a 240-volt circuit.
The Honda Fit EV made its debut at the
Los Angeles Auto Show in 2011 and will
begin to roll out to customers in California
and Oregon during the summer of 2012,
followed by the East Coast in 2013.
* Currently available in the United States, Canada
and Puerto Rico.

history by walking through George Town’s Heritage Trail.
Let your adventure kick off at the historical, star-shaped
fortress of Fort Cornwallis, then walk over to the charming
Penang Town Hall and take a look at one of the oldest houses
in George Town - which was later turned into a school - at
Convent Light Street. Explore Love Lane’s quaint streets
and alleyways to take a look at the beautiful, rustic Chinese
shop houses. You can also enjoy traditional Chinese opera
and puppet show performances at the Goddess of Mercy
Temple and head towards Little India, and traverse down
