Beacon May 2006 - Riverside Christian School
The Beacon 100 years as “A Light in the Hills” No. 7 Riverside Christian School May 2006 25 cents Graduates celebrate their heritage It wasn’t the Oscars or a visiting foreign dignitary, but cameras were everywhere, and the flashes could nearly have replaced the mercury lights. It was Commencement night in the Riverside Christian School gymnasium. The graduating Class of 2006 and the eighth grade graduates were being honored by parents, family, teachers, and friends. Junior class escort Brett Stacy lit the candles that lined the aisle and then escorted in the eighth grade graduates. The crowd that filled the gymnasium stood as the seniors marched in to the traditional Pomp and Circumstance. They were escorted by juniors Paige Sizemore and Brandon Hudson. After Arnett Napier led in prayer, each of the seven seniors had a part in the program. Bobbie Jo Haddix, one of the three Valedictorians, spoke first, welcomed everyone, and looked to the past for the class. Two other Valedictorians, Kendra Miller and Kimberly Miller, also delivered their addresses. Both spoke about their classmates and in relation to their class motto “Learning from our heritage while stepping into our future.” The eighth grade class took the platform next for their presentation “Dare to Do Right.” The elementary chorus sang two songs, first announcing the dedication of them to the seniors and saying “We love you, Seniors.” A presentation of awards followed. A number of awards were presented on Honors Day but the highest ones were reserved for graduation night. The awards were as follows: Curriculum Area Winners/ Cont. to GRADUATES p 6 Baccalaureate honors grads The seniors made their first appearance in their caps and gowns Sunday, May 14 at the Baccalaureate service held at the Drushal Memorial Brethren Church right here on the Riverside campus. Then service began about 3:00 p.m. with Miss Beverly Burroughs playing a nice prelude. After everyone was in the chapel, a hymn “God Of Our Fathers” was sung. Then Kendra Miller, senior, stood up and gave a very moving prayer. After she was seated, everyone sang another hymn The eighth grade graduates spoke at the baccalaureate service “Heavenly Sunlight.” Then the Responsive Reading “The Way of Life” was read by Bobbie Jo Haddix, senior. After that, the 2006 eighth grade class gave a presentation. Then Donald Tapio was there to provide special music. Next the 2006 senior class gave a choral reading followed by Donna Southwood who sang a solo. Rev. Tommy Miller, Riverside alumnus, shared a special message to the congregation he had prepared especially the seniors. After the message everyone sang another hymn “He Leadeth Me” and David Back, Senior, lead everyone in a closing prayer. While “Savior Like a Shepard Lead Us” was being played, the graduates Cont. to BACCA. page 3 Tommy Miller 2 THE BEACON May 23, 2006 Don’t be late…..for a very important date Learning outside of the classroom Too many people are wasting their high school experience and only deciding to do things during their senior year. Do not wait until your senior year to… get serious about your school work. By that time, most of your grades will already be on your permanent record. Don’t wait until your senior year to… worry about your permanent record because by that time all the things you’ve done are already there and you can’t do anything about it. Don’t wait until your senior year to… get involved in school activities because then you’ve already missed out on all the fun, and the experience that helps you to excel as a senior. Don’t wait until your senior year to… make friends. They can help you get through high school and through the problems high school can bring. Don’t wait until your senior year to… decide whether you want to go to college and what you want to become. If you procrastinate about college, you might not get in right away. Don’t wait until your senior year to… start thinking about scholarships and financial aid. When you wait, you might not get the amount you normally would. Don’t wait until your senior year to… learn how to budget your money. If you learn now, you might be able to afford college with help from scholarships and financial aid. Don’t wait until your senior year to… listen to your teachers, parents and upperclassmen. The advice they give you can help you throughout life. We encourage you to do everything now instead of waiting for your senior year. If you wait, you might regret it for the rest of your life. In high school we learn reading, writing, and arithmetic. Then after a full day of learning some of us students enjoy extracurricular activities. Do we realize, however, that while we are enjoying softball, drama, football, or whatever the activity may be, we are still actually learning. Extracurricular activities teach students and prepare them for their futures in a way that teachers and parents can not. They teach students commitment first of all. Being a part of a team of club requires all member to be there for everything to work properly. Generally, when a member doesn’t show up the coach or team leaders may get on to them but they’ll probably catch more slack from fellow members. Having to repeat instructions for absent members clarifies the need for commitment. The importance of each individual encourages commitment. Secondly, students learn to be on time. In “the real world” when you’re late for a meeting or job interview, it’s entirely unacceptable. Being involved with extracurricular activities teaches students that they have to be on time or there may be consequences. Also, being involved with extracurricular activities requires team work and being able to work out problems with other people. This is also a must in the work place. If you can’t get along with your co-workers or boss your job will be a lot more difficult. Through extracurricular activities students are able to learn these different attributes and improve on them before they enter the work place. They’ll benefit now but also later on in life. So do whatever it takes to prepare yourself for your future. Get involved. Persistence produces better persons As children grow, parents try to instill in them high standards, morals, and good character. This is good because what is instilled in a person at a young age is more likely to be seen in them as a teenager. The old phrase “ finish what you start” is one characteristics many parents try to teach their children. This principle is very important in many areas of life, for example: education, athletics, clubs, etc. Many times as young people we go into things head first and find out very quickly that it is not quite what we expected. In these situations we want to give up and get out quick. And that is understandable because we want to enjoy life and at that moment the situation we are in does not seem enjoyable. Although sticking things out even when it is not what we want do is very commendable. If we would take a minute to look back in history we would see that many famous men are only famous because they were committed to a task. One of these famous men was Abraham Lincoln. Before he was elected president he had run several times for other offices and was defeated but he stayed committed to his desire to serve the people and now he is in all our history textbooks. Thomas Edison is also one who failed several times before he succeeded in inventing the light bulb. Persistence can be very rewarding. As we travel down the pathways of life we are going to be in situations we would prefer to not be in. In those time we must stay committed, press on and in the end we will be a better person for it. Hostetler receives another award Another honor came posthumously to Doran Hostetler. The coaches of the 55th District selected Mr. Hostetler to be in the 14th Region Basketball Association Court of Honor. The announcement was made at a special awards dinner held at Hazard High School recently. A plaque was presented to Mrs. Hostetler in recognition of her husband. During his forty years at Riverside, Mr. Hostetler coached several sports, including cross country, basketball, baseball, and softball. His love for sports reached back to his high school days when he participated in several sports and to his college years of football. The Association also recognizes All—Region (14th) young men and women and coaches. They, too, received plaques. The Association does some services projects throughout the season as well. The Beacon Rose Wolfe and her daughter Sarah presented Kendra and Kimberly with special awards for community service Paige & Brandon escort seniors Brett Stacy lit the candles. This is a special issue published by the English 11 class for the senior class. Contributing writers are Paige Sizemore, Brandon Hudson, Brett Stacy, Nancy Hostetler. Technical support came from Becky Baker, Larry Monroe, Kendra Miller, Kimberly Miller, Bobbie Jo Haddix. THE BEACON May 23, 2006 3 It rained on their rides Seniors, juniors enjoy all-nighter By Paige Sizemore Beacon Staff King’s Island hosted their 18th Annual Science and Mathematics Day recently. The event was not open to the public just to students, sponsors and teachers. Twenty-six Riverside students, grades 7-10 went on the field trip. The students were split up in groups of 4 or 5. Several parents and staff supervised the small groups. Each group had worksheets that could be completed by using mathematical shills and observing the different rides. Here are some comments from the students and adults about the trip. Kendra Crowe—It was cold, but we still had fun. Michael Fugate—I wished I had more time so I could ride more rides. It was a good trip. Danielle Landrum— I had a lot of fun. I wished I could had done more. Joey Gross—I had a fun time even though it was wet and cold. Seniors hear prophecy, reveal their will It was time for Senior Chapel and the seniors were nowhere to be found. Then the back gym doors were opened and in they came —riding, that is, in a blue ‘92 Festiva. This was a first! The car stopped, the seniors piled out, and they took their places on the stage. Student Council member Randall Hardin began the program with prayer. Miss Burroughs presented each of the seniors with a gift certificate from H &R Block. Mrs. Hostetler presented Kendra Miller with her red ribbon of Excellent for her entry in the ACSI Creative Writing Festival. Then a video was shown of the seniors as babies, as they are now, and, well, possibly how they might be in 40 years. The video was put together by Coach Keck, Paige Sizemore, Brandon Hudson and Brett Stacy. The Senior Class Prophecy was read by Council Vice President Paige Sizemore. This was followed by a number of presentations by the seniors as a part of their Class Will. The bequests ranged widely from hermit crabs to a wooden sword to Hershey kisses. The seniors gathered together for several special presentations. They had chosen to dedicate the 2006 yearbook to Coach Keck and Miss Burroughs. Each of them was given a framed sample page as it will appear in the final Echo. The class also presented gifts to their sponsors, Tommy and Carol Miller and Coach Keck. Then Coach Keck in turn played his guitar and sang a song he had composed especially for the Class of 2006. In closing gifts were presented to each senior and to each eighth grade graduate by Council members Joey Gross, Ashley Tincher, Brandon Hudson and Paige Sizemore. Coach Keck led everyone in singing the school song. Cont. from BACCA p 1 filed out and formed a reception line to be congratulated by their families and friends. On April 28 the juniors and seniors spent the night in Lexington, Kentucky. The evening began with a welcome from junior class president, Brett Stacy. David Back, senior class president, gave the response. Mrs. Hostetler had prayer. We had dinner and entertainment as well. Brandon Hudson showed a DVD of the senior’s baby pictures. A couple songs were sung together and Miss Thompson played the dulcimer. Then came the reading of the Senior Prophecy by Paige Sizemore. Miss Thompson shared a devotional. The group went to Triangle Park to take pictures. After taking pictures the next stop was the Lexington Ice Center. Ice skating was followed by some exciting action on a basketball court. Ice skating was a new experience for some. Playing basketball can never be passed up. Bowling followed shortly after where we stayed until 1:00 AM. Nearby was a Waffle House where we went to have breakfast. The juniors, seniors and the advisors arrived at Riverside around 4:00 AM. Here are some comments the seniors had about the Banquet: Kimberly-Everything went well. The juniors did a really good job and made really good memories. Greg-Actually had Mr. Tapio (L to R) Derek, Chase , Greg, Brandon , Brett, David (L to R) Kendra, Kimberly, Bobbie Jo, Paige fun. Derek-Very sweet spending time with the juniors. DavidIt was killer. Bobbie Jo-It was awesome. Kendra-Really good...whole lot of fun and we made a lot of memories to- gether. Chase– It was really fun. The junior class would like to thank the class advisors and others who helped put the Jr/ Sr Banquet of 2006 together. Wilson receives scholarship Senior Greg Wilson has been chosen as the recipient of a Conservation Scholarship. His announcement was made by the Breathitt County Conservation District. The scholarship is offered to students who are interested in pursuing a career in natural resource conservation or a related field. Greg will be pursuing a career in the field of Fish and Wildlife Management. His parents are Walter and Patty Wilson of Hollyfork Road. The scholarship will continue each semester over a four year period providing the student is continuing in a conservation field or study and his grades are satisfactory. 4 THE BEACON May 23, 2006 Many students receive awards Staff hosts seniors Hard work brings rewards. The annual Honors Day took place Wednesday, May 17, to recognize the accomplishments of many students from first grade to seniors. Honors Day started with a popular, family style lunch served to the students. The special lunch was to show the students how much they are appreciated when they are doing their best. At 1:40 PM a reception was held in the multi-purpose room for the high school honored students and parents who were able to attend. The first through eighth grade held their reception in the cafeteria. The students got to enjoy delicious home-made treats, chips and pop. The final part of Honors Day began at 2:00 PM in the gymnasium. Many honors were given. The parents seemed very pleased with their children’s awards. For some light entertainment intervals, two videos produced by the video classes were shown. The following list of awards: Student Council Kimberly Miller—President Paige Sizemore—Vice Pres. The evening started with introductions as seniors passed through the traditional receiving line. Thereafter, staff were required to address each senior by their title Mr. or Miss and seniors addressed faculty by their first name. Accidental infractions that were caught resulted in loss of one of the four dum-dum suckers given to all participants. The ability of seniors and staff to adjust to name reversal was promptly tested in the first competition between Tommy’s Tigers ( better known as Monroe’s Mongrels ) and the team which earned its name from this competition The Comeback Cucumbers. Tommy’s Tigers jumped ahead 7-1 as the mixed team of seniors and staff correctly identified their opponents in a game of Instant ID. However, the Cucumbers hung tough to tie and win 8-7 in the next 7 ID standoffs. It was a comeback that distinguished this team as a team that never gave up. The next two competitions challenged the logical and verbal power of contestants as the Comeback Cucumbers were the first to solve a special sudoko puzzle for the graduates. However, Tommy’s Tigers excelled in verbal ingenuity to successfully solve word puzzles such as those that transformed “plum” to the senior color of “blue” and “trip” to “grad.” Teamwork and communication were all important in the contests of lineup, helium hoop, twisted sisters. The seemingly easy contest requiring each team to lower a hoola hoop to the floor tested everyone’s patience when the hoops went up instead of down. The Cucumbers second comeback occurred in the board relay, where partners had to walk in sync on two footboards. It didn't take long to find out who knew their right foot from their left foot! The talented Cucumber Ms. Thompson , claiming not to be a bowler, downed the final pins in the first round of the 36– pin bowling game to put her team in the lead. Meanwhile, the Tigers found out how hard it is to down a single pin, and earned a deficit too big to overcome in the second round. Although in each individual contest competition was close, the comeback Cucumbers dominated in the competition overall to win 8-1. They also ended up with more suckers. After the friendly competition delicious refreshments we served , and staff were delightfully entertained by a spontaneous round of singing and spoon playing by seniors. To those who attended, it was obvious that this enjoyable evening of tradition will be one of the memories bringing smiles to the class of 2006 as they step into their future. Chase is the 18 year old son of Chet and Donna Combs. He is an only child and resides at Rowdy, Kentucky. Just like every other 18 year old, he is a very fun and outgoing guy. He enjoys just sitting around relaxing, taking it easy, and riding around town and hanging out with friends. Although he doesn’t participate in sports he still loves being there and cheering the teams on. He works at Ponderosa in Hazard, Kentucky and something not too many people know is that he was Cont. from GRADUATES p 1 Jr. High-Treven Back, Bethany Butters, Justin Tapio, Maura Watkins, Beretta Roberts, Kayla Noble, Brian Baker, Danielle Landrum. When asked what are some of his accomplishments he answered, “Well I’ve got a car, a good job, and I’m about to graduate, which is a big deal.” He says after graduating he is looking forward to not having to go to school for a while. His future plans are finding a good job, maybe going to college, and just see where he ends up. “Just see where God takes me,” is the way Chase puts it. Teachers, staff enjoy appreciation Chase said he has learned a lot of new things his senior year, a lot of helpful things. When asked if he had any words of wisdom for future classes he replied, “Good Luck, have as much fun as you can, and stay out of trouble as much as you can.” Chase’s final thoughts about the whole thing is that he’s glad he made it and I’m sure everyone else is proud of him too. Walking through the halls of Riverside School last Monday you would see all the teachers wearing buttons saying “I’m Appreciated.” That was just the first day of a special week when the Student Council led the student body in various activities to show the teachers and staff that they are truly appreciated. Each day of the week gifts were distributed to teachers and staff. On Wednesday donuts, fruit and drinks were provided in the teachers lounge. Students substituted for teachers in various classes.
