The Old 96 District Model ‘A’ Ford Club is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserve the Model
‘A’ Ford. It is intended to provide a medium of exchange of ideas, information and parts for admirers
of the Model ‘A’ Ford car. Membership in the club is by family and this remains a primary objective
of the club to include all family members in the enjoyment of the Model ‘A’ Ford car.
The Old 96 District Model ‘A’ Ford Club is chartered by the Model ‘A’ Ford Club of America
(MAFCA). MAFCA is a non-profit corporation of California and a national historical society dedicated
to the restoration and preservation of the Model ‘A’ Ford automobile as manufactured from 1928
through 1931.
The Old 96 District Model ‘A’ Ford Club is a region of The Model ‘A’ Restorers Club (MARC).
MARC, founded in 1952, holds as its aims the encouragement of members to acquire, restore,
preserve and exhibit the Model ‘A’ Ford. And most importantly, to enjoy the fellowship of other
Model ‘A’ owners around the world.
Please refer to enclosed calendar of events for scheduled meetings. The Club Membership
Meeting- Breakfast Social is usually at 9:00 AM on the morning of the first Saturday of each month
unless it is a special occasion or holiday weekend. There is also a technical meeting on the second
Monday of the month. Local Club dues are $25.00 per year.
Membership in the national Model ‘A’ Ford Club of America is desired and encouraged. Dues for
MAFCA are $40.00 per year. MAFCA is located at 250 South Cypress Street, La Habra, CA.,

President’s Letter
Sure looking forward to cooler weather;
the A's even seem to "Cadillac" better.
Nothing like a fine tuned Model A on a
beautiful fall morning traveling on the
highway. Our trip to the Smoking Pig was
very enjoyable. We left the restaurant. Our
next stop was a car lot we had passed on the
way to Williamston. This place was full of
cars and more cars. The owner invited us to
come back and spend all the time we wanted
and look over acres and acres of cars. I'm
sure this will be one of our stops in the near
future. Callaham Orchards was our next stop.
This was on a Saturday afternoon and it was
almost closing time. All their fresh fruits and
veggies were just about gone. This will be
another stop in the near future.
Grits and Groceries was another great place
to eat on a Thursday evening. One of our
servers had mentioned to other servers that
the Model A folks were coming. "What's a
Model A?”, she asked. Imagine that! Our
business meeting was held after we finished
our supper.
Tech night was held in our garage. Most of
the men work while the ladies socialize. The
A's were repaired and the members left
happy. Great times are held in these garages.
Thanks to all that attend.
There is a need in our club for new officers
and leaders. We need folks that love the
Model A and traveling with the club. The
positions open are President, Vice President,
Treasurer, Membership Chairman, and Ad
Coordinator. Please consider helping our club
to move forward. We have been very faithful
in attendance at all functions; we have a
wonderful group to work with. All of us have
a love for the Model A and a love to see our
club succeed. New leaders can share new
ideas.
Remember those that are by the road side,
the care takers, the movers and the shakers.
Keep those A's rolling, see you down the
road.

Editor’s Note
I have always been a little leery about driving
a Model A at night. I thought it was that I might
break down and with poor light I might be
stranded or that I might even be struck by a
passing car while I was on the roadside. All these
are possibilities but I was rewarded with another
scenario last night. I was returning from
Abbeville after an ice cream excursion when
suddenly both headlights went out. In the country
in Abbeville County it is really dark at night. I
could see nothing but managed to get to the
roadside without striking something. I moved the
light switch on and off several times and the lights
finally came back on. I surmise that the contacts
in the switch became corroded enough to lose
contact and by moving the switch several times,
contact was re-established. At any rate, my night
driving fears were realized. I suppose something
similar could happen with a modern vehicle but
for awhile I will be apprehensive driving my
Model A at night.

Treasurer’s Report
August 2015
The Old 96 Club continues to maintain a
balance in line with the Club budget as set
and approved by the Board of Directors.
All bills and receipts are processed
promptly. The checkbook is balanced
monthly and there have been no
discrepancies

September Business Meeting
Old 96 District Model “A” Ford Club met
at Grits and Groceries on September 3,
2015.
Twenty-nine members were
present and enjoyed a delicious meal.
President Warren Reynolds called the
meeting to order. A motion was made to
accept the minutes of the August business
meeting as printed in the newsletter. The
motion carried.
Old Business:
President Reynolds presented a
Proposed Budget for 2016. Each item
was voted on as presented and approved.
The 2016 Budget will be printed and sent
to members by email.
National Wild Turkey Federation
tickets are still available at $10.00 each.
New Business:
A letter was received from MAFCA
requesting donations for the museum.
This was received as information. Also, a
flyer was received from a candidate
running for a position on the MAFCA
board and distributed to members.

President Reynolds expressed the
need for a Nominating Committee. The
slate of officers for 2016 will be included
in the November newsletter and voted on
at the December business meeting.
A motion was made and seconded for
adjournment. Motion carried.

funds for the 2016 National Meet in
Toledo, Ohio. First prize is a rebuilt
motor. Second prize is a Model T GoCart.

Sue Reynolds reported on club
activities. Since the trip to Newberry was
cancelled, Lyn Ellis has invited us to
come to his cabin on the river on October
3 for a picnic and business meeting. The
club will provide the chicken. Members
are asked to provide the sides and
desserts.

Thomas Edison was Henry Ford's best friend.
Not only did he give him the first Model "A"
off of the assembly line, he told Edison that
his name would always be with the Ford
name and in the Ford
logo. Note that the cross in the script letter
"F" forms the letter "T". The swirl on the end
of the of the cross forms the top of the letter
"E", with the open-top letter of the "O"
forming the bottom of the
letter "E".

Old 96 District Ford Model A Club will be
having their annual Christmas Dinner on
Saturday, December 5, 2015, 1:00 p.m.,
at Carson's Steak House in Anderson,
SC. The club voted to pay $20.00
per member for those signing up by
November 1st to attend the dinner .
Anyone who has not signed up by
November 1st may still attend the dinner,
but will not be eligible to receive payment
by the club. We will have our December
Business Meeting including election
and installation of club officers for 2016.
We will also have our annual Gift Swap.
Each person should bring a gift costing
from $5.00 to $10.00. Contact Sue
Reynolds by the November
1st deadline to sign up for the dinner.

1930s Style Striped Dresses
So where did this “stripeyness” come
from? In some form or another,
stripes have been in every decade of
fashion since…. well just a very long
time. Take this great example from the
19th century. Odd ball clothing aside,
the really big trend of stripes,
especially black and white stripes,
came about in the 1930’s. It had
something to do with the obsession
Hollywood stars had with the French
Riviera. Suddenly every man and
woman wanted to dress like a French
fisherman with a striped shirt, dress or
better yet beach pajamas! Not all
striped clothes were black and white.
Add in red and white candy stripes or
blue and white nautical stripes and
you’ll be set for all seaside
adventures.

Is a time in September set aside,
For all lovers of Ford’s Model “A”s
To get in their vehicles and ride.
Model “A”s all over the world
Can be seen out driving around.
Some have specific destinations,
Others travel for the joy that is found.
They may be meeting at Gilmore Museum,
Or at special events held that day.
They might only be out for a drive,
Waving to others along the way.
It’s all about Ford’s invention,
Manufactured from Twenty-eight to Thirty-one.

Bendix Starter Drive
We tend to take for granted various aspects of our Model A until something goes wrong.
Recently this happened to Dee and Debby McDill’s Victoria. Upon trying to crank the car,
nothing but a whir was heard—no turning of the engine. The starter was removed and the bolt
in the driving head of the Bendix mechanism was missing allowing the starter armature shaft to
spin inside the spiral gear without turning the pinion gear resulting in no turning of the flywheel.
What are the peculiar springs, gears, and bolts that go together to make up the Bendix drive
that we take for granted?
In starting the motor, the starter gear(pinion
gear) must contact the flywheel gear so that the
starter will rotate the flywheel and once the motor
starts the starter must be dis-engaged from the
flywheel or the speed of the engine would
destroy the starter. How does the Bendix
accomplish this?
The pinion gear has screw threads cut on its
inner bore. The Bendix sleeve has matching
threads cut on its outer side allowing the pinion
gear to move forward and backward on the
sleeve. The pinion and sleeve fit loosely over
the armature shaft and are connected to the
driving head through the Bendix spring. The
driving head is keyed to the armature shaft. The
pinion and sleeve can rotate on the shaft up to the limit of the spring.
When the starter begins to rotate, the rotation is transferred through the driving head and
spring to the sleeve. As the sleeve picks up speed, the pinion gear is thrown forward by
centrifugal force. When it moves forward it engages the flywheel gear and when the gears
mesh the flywheel is rotated and the engine cranks. The gears must mesh at random and if the
meshing fails on the first contact, a great force is applied to the sleeve. This force is absorbed
by the spring so that the mechanism is not torn apart. Despite this absorption of force, some
wear is produced on the opposing surfaces of the two gears. When the engine cranks, the
speed of the pinion gear rapidly increases above the speed of the pinion sleeve causing the
gear to spin out of mesh with the flywheel gear.
The tremendous forces that must cross the Bendix spring can cause the spring to break or
the bolts attaching the spring to the shaft and to the sleeve to unwind themselves and to fall out.
This in effect disconnects the starter shaft from the Bendix drive and the starter will not rotate
the engine. This is exactly what happened to Debby’s starter.
The broken or loosened screw falls into the bell housing. Most authorities feel that the
missing screw must be retrieved since it can cause trouble. There are several described ways
to retrieve the screw. The most used method is to enter a magnet attached to a flexible shaft
through the starter hole in the flywheel housing. If this fails, some people place a “blob” of
grease on one spot of the crank gear of the flywheel and slowly turn the motor by hand.
Hopefully the missing bolt will be stick to the grease as it passes through the bottom of the
housing. The bolt and grease are removed as the flywheel comes back to the top position. (As
an anecdote, I have had two engines overhauled and both of them had two starter bolts
removed from the housing. They were causing no problems.)
Hopefully this simplified description helps you understand the Bendix starter drive.
