Sweet Contest
Need help motivating your troop to meet their individual cookie goals?
Tell them about the Sweet Taste of Success Contest. If a girl sells at least
150 boxes of cookies (must be recorded in eBudde), she gets entered in a
drawing for a trip for four to Hershey Park! Girl Scouts of Central Maryland
strives to have a successful cookie sale—a sale where all girl members
achieve success. A sale where all girls participate in an activity that will build
skills and qualities they will use for a lifetime. To help all girls achieve success
we have created the “Sweet Taste of Success” challenge –a challenge for
EVERY Girl Scout to sell at least 150 boxes of delicious Girl Scout Cookies.
Every Girl Scout who sells at least 150 boxes will be entered in a drawing for
a SWEET celebration at Hershey Park. The lucky winner will receive four (4)
tickets for a fun-filled day in Chocolate Town—Hershey, PA.
The Prize: Tickets to Hershey Park, plus a one night stay at the
Chocolatetown Motel. Contest is limited to one-room, one night stay.
Specific details regarding this prize package will be outlined with winner.

Going for Girl Scout Gold!
Seniors and Ambassadors haven’t let fall festivities stop them from working on
their Girl Scout Gold Award Projects! There are already 116 Girl Scout Gold Award
recipients for 2012 and it is only November!
Three of the 2012 recipients chose to focus their projects on providing children
in need with the amenities they were lacking. Laura Muscovich, of Troop 2306, created a
sustainable collection of mittens to donate to the Chillum Youth Project. Dana Kresslein, of
Troop 1136, ran two workshops and collected shoes for the organization, Shoes 2 Shoes. At the
same time, Mikaela Evans, of Troop 1884, created “boredom bags” filled with age-appropriate
activities to give to children living in desperate situations. All three young ladies feel like they
have made a difference in the world.
Stay tuned for more 2012 Girl Scout Gold Award updates and highlights!
100 ways to show Courage,
Confidence, and Character
In honor of Girl Scouts’ 100th
Anniversary, we want to
know 100 ways Girl Scouts
(girls and adults) can best
show courage, confidence
and character. We could
probably come up with
100 ways on our own, but
we’d rather hear from you—
devoted Girl Scout members
and volunteers—how do you
believe girls can best show
courage, confidence and
character.
Please send at least five
ways you believe Girl Scouts
can best show the 3Cs to:
[email protected] by
December 9, 2011 so that
your “ways” can be part of
the “100 Ways” listing.
Patch Design Contest: World Thinking Day 2012
We invite all girls to participate in this year’s Around the World on Thinking
Day Patch Design Contest. Please take time at your troop meeting to have
the girls create a patch for this year’s World Thinking Day. The theme is “We
Can Save Our Planet.”
Patch contest submissions are due by December 15, 2011. They can be
emailed to [email protected] or mailed to Attn: Sherry Dowdell, Girl Scouts
of Central Maryland, 4806 Seton Drive, Baltimore, MD 21215. Patch contest
winner will receive free admission to the program and the patch will be
created and given to all event attendees.

First Annual Travel Pathway
Savannah Trip a Success!
Upon the birth of the Travel
Pathway in May of 2010, one
of our goals was to offer
any girls, Juniors and older,
a chance to visit Savannah,
Georgia, the birthplace of
Juliette Gordon Low, our
founder. After a year of
money-earning activities, the
first annual Savannah trip set
out this past June to explore
the rich history of Scouting
and the city of Savannah.
Led by the intrepid Linda
Beyer and Sharon August,
22 Girl Scouts took the train,
dining car and all, and settled
into our hotel. The girls had
decided on a strenuous
itinerary, and our leaders
found a way to schedule it all!
On our first day, right off the
train, we cruised up the river,
enjoying the antics of dozens
of dolphins, and visited the

Maritime Museum, where we
learned about women pirates.
As the week progressed, we
took in a movie tour, Paula
Deen tour, walking ghost
tour, pirate house dinner
and tour – earning dozens of
patches as we learned about
Savannah’s hospitality, its rich
history, and its sights. And,
oh, the wonderful Savannah
eating – from our two candy
factory tours to dinner at
Uncle Bubba’s, Casbah’s
Moroccan dinner with belly
dancer, and Mrs. Wilkes
boarding house, where we
were treated to a huge array
of Southern dishes, from fried
chicken and pulled pork to a
dozen different vegetables.
But, the highlight of the trip
was the visit to the birthplace,
where we did a workshop
focusing on activities a child
would have enjoyed when
Juliette Low was young, and
to the Andrew Low House and
first headquarters, where we
sat where the first Girl Scouts
sat and learned about what
they did in their meetings.
At the grave of our founder,
our girls planned a ceremony
and shared their love of Girl
Scouting. All too soon, the
week-long trip was over and
the train ride home awaited
us.
Despite my years in Girl
Scouting, this was my
own first trip to Savannah,
and I have only praise for
our leaders and girls, who
planned and executed such
an ambitious plan flawlessly.
We have two Savannah trips
planned for the summer of
2012 – both already full. But,
no worries, we’ll go again in
2013. Just watch for our flier
and come to our planning
meeting!

Double Your End-Of Year Charitable Contribution
Help Support YOUR troop and GSCM at the
same time through Matching Gifts!
Companies match gifts to thank their
employees for the time they spend
volunteering in their communities.
Programs vary from company to company.
Many companies will have a straight match
for an employee’s donation to a non-profit
organization. Others may offer a cash gift
based on the number of hours volunteered.
Many parents and volunteers are already
making end of year contributions, just in time
for tax season. Simply remind them that
their gift might be eligible for a match.
To receive Matching Gift monies please
contact your Human Resources Department
and ask for the paperwork for Matching
Gifts. Many forms are also available on your company’s
website. The GSCM website also lists many companies with
Matching Gift programs. If your company is not listed, be sure
25% of Matching Gift dollars are
returned to your Troop to use
to ask your Human Resource Department if your company
participates. Copies of the Matching Gift brochure can be
requested through the Volunteer Resource Center.
Remember 25% of Matching Gift dollars are returned to your
troop to use. Any gift that is matched also counts as a SHARE
donation from your troop, making it easier to achieve your
SHARE goal.
