THE NEED:
Mission: Fonkoze is a family of organizations that work together to provide financial and non-financial
services to empower Haitians—primarily women—to lift their families out of poverty.
Fonkoze was founded in 1994 by Father Joseph Philippe, a Haitian priest who wanted to enable the rural poor
in Haiti to organize themselves economically. He chose to focus on Haitian women, who are considered the
poto mitan (“backbone”) of the Haitian economy. In 1995, Fonkoze was recognized as an official Haitian
foundation. With three volunteers working from a borrowed building, Father Joseph began the process of
providing financial services to Haiti’s rural poor. Since then, Fonkoze has grown into a globally recognized
institution with 850 staff members and 45 branches covering every area of Haiti, providing both financial and
development services including education and health to support our 60,000-plus microfinance borrowers
and 200,000 saving clients.

PROMOTION:
