®Welcome
As the new president of Waubonsee Community College I want to welcome you to our
athletics program. Whether you are a new student, a prospective student, an athlete or a
community member our sports program has something for everyone. From men's and
women's basketball to soccer to cross country to volleyball our sport's teams offer
competition, sportsmanship and the opportunity to form lifelong experiences.
Our athletic booklet showcases the accomplishments of our individual athletes, their
teams and the pride they exhibit-win or lose-as a member of Waubonsee's sports
teams.
Dr. Christine J. Sobek
President
At Waubonsee Community College we are committed to
academics. Providing our students and the surrounding
community with an excellent education is our foremost
responsibility. Waubonsee athletes are fortunate to receive
their first two years of higher education at an outstanding
institution while being able to participate in a viable and
successful sports curriculum.
Students who attend a community college satisfy their
freshmen and sophomore
educational requirements
equivalent to the first two years
of study at a senior institution.
Transfer programs are constructed to consist of general education
courses in a chosen major field
along with elective courses,
leading to a bachelor's degree.
Community colleges continue
to grow and prosper. Statistics
show that 55 percent of all
college freshmen attend a
community college. Community
colleges and their curriculums
provide students with an
alternative to immediate enrollment at a senior institution.
At four major Illinois universities-Northern Illinois,
Southern Illinois, Western Illinois and Illinois State more
than 30 percent of their undergraduate students attended a
community college first. The results of studies by these
senior institutions have proven that community college
transfer students do academically as well, if not better,
than students who initially enrolled at their university.
Dave Randall, athletic manager and coach for the
Waubonsee Community College Chiefs, has coached more
than 200 players over the past 20 years and has a proven
track record. More than 70 percent of athletes attending
Waubonsee have continued their education beyond two
years and have transferred to a senior institution.
The American Association
of Community College's
accredited and ranked
Waubonsee in the top five
percent of more than 1,200
community colleges across
the United States.
Success is guaranteed for
our athletes both on the field
and in the classroom. In
keeping pace with our
commitment to academics,
the athletic department
works closely with the
developmental educational
department and has an athlete monitoring program for all athletes. These programs
are designed to assure educational advancement and success.
Information about Waubonsee's educational programs
and services are available by contacting the college's
Counseling and Advising Center at (630) 466-7900, ext.

OUR
S.T.A.R.
PROGRAM
The Waubonsee Community College
S.T.A.R. Program (Student/ Athletes
Taking Academic Responsibility) was
created to further the academic
progress of student / athletes while
participating in athletics.
To further the academic
development of our student/ athletes,
personal, career and academic counseling is available through the
college's counselor's office located in
Erickson Hall.
It is the belief of the athletic office
that due to the ever changing
transferring regulations for four-year
institutions, community colleges have
a responsibility to their student/ athletes to keep them informed and to
guide them through a successful
transition to their chosen four-year
institution. Waubonsee Community
College is a leader and has a model
program to assist the academic needs
of our student / athletes.
A personal academic file is maintained on each student/ athlete.
They are required to meet with the
S.T.A.R. counselor on a regular
basis, allowing them to stay current with their academic standing.
In addition, it provides them with
the assistance needed to meet individual goals as well as those that
apply to the individual transfer
process.
6
All incoming student / athletes
are required to attend weekly
study sessions. Failure to
meet attendance requirements result in suspension for the student / athlete's sport. The S.T.A.R.
study hall is located
adjacent to the college'S
Learning Enhancement
Center and the Todd
Library and is staffed
with a qualified tutor.
Academic checks as well as attendance checks are an ongoing process
in the S.T.A.R. Program. Instructors
are also contacted on a regular basis.
Throughout the year, student/ athletes are encouraged to access other
services available throughout the
college. This includes, but is not limited to, workshops on nutrition, test
anxiety, financial aid, transferring to
four-year institutions, as well as guest
speakers on various current topics.
We also provide ongoing assistance
in the areas of mathematics, writing,
academic assistance, and study
strategies through our Learning
Enhancement Center.

Season:Preview
At first glance down the 2001/2002 Waubonsee men's
basketball roster, one might pause for concern over the
lack of even one returning player from last year's squad
that went 26-6 and an undefeated 12-0 in the Skyway
Conference.
Does head coach Dave Heiss pause? Not even for a second. "We didn't have anyone returning two years ago
when we won the Region IV Tournament and went to
nationals," declares the 16-year veteran coach. "Sure, we
may be a little behind early, but what we miss in experience this year, we make up for in athleticism, size and
depth."
And who's to argue with a coach who has won 78 percent (102-28) of his games over the last four seasons-the
highest mark in the state. The Chiefs have captured the
Skyway crown in three of the last four years, including last
year. They have been nationally ranked for the last four
years.
"This team has all the similarities and characteristics of
the teams of the last four years," states Heiss. "Our
strengths will be our depth, athleticism, quickness and
size. This is the biggest team we have ever had with 13 out
of 19 kids listed at 6-4 or taller. They are not just big, but
they're also quick. They cover a lot of territory, which will
make us very tough on defense."
If there is a concern of Heiss', it's just how fast the new
players will come together and develop a chemistry and
cohesiveness. He also wants them to understand the
team's philosophy, which has guided them to success in
the past.
"We believe we will win big games with defense, depth
and discipline," Heiss proclaims emphatically. "We use
everyone on the roster and we share the ball. Over the last
several years, we have had anywhere from four to six kids
average in double figures. We have to get the players on
this team to understand that there is only one ball, and it
must be shared."
There are two players on the team who are familiar with
the philosophy. Ryan Sycks, a forward from Geneva,
played four years ago for Heiss and has returned to finish
his eligibility. Lamar Lathen, a 6-1 guard from Ellender
Memorial, practiced with the team last year as a redshirt.
The rest of the team is brand new including Walter
Smith (5-9, Proviso West) and Charlie Hawkins (5-10,
Morgan Park) who will fight for the starting point guard
role. Lathen can also play the point.
12
The two guard spots will be battled for by Lamar
Lathen, cousin Darius Lathen (6-2, Aurora East), Roosevelt
Shegog (6-5, Momence) and Ronald Bell (6-4, Evergreen
Park).
The small forward position will find competition
between Shegog and Bell, as well as Darnell Coleman (6-4,
Simeon), Wayne Lee (6-4, Hyde Park) and Jared Carswell
(6-6, Proviso West).
Sycks, Casterdaryl McKinnon (6-6, Morgan Park),
LaTaurus Morris (6-4, Proviso West) and Brad Mason (6-6,
Waubonsie Valley) wage war for the power forward slot.
Brandon Pruitt (6-8, Lincoln Park) and Desmond Parks
(6-7, Carver) will share the post responsibilities.
"There is no doubt that this much competition for starting spots will make us stronger and more hungry," Heiss
says.
The success of the past also makes the coaching staff
hungry, and once again they have set some lofty goals for
this year~s edition of the Chiefs. One goal the Chiefs have
set is to win their own WCC Invitational, as they have
done for the previous five seasons. "We then want to see
improvement from game~to-game," says Heiss. 'We want
to win all of our home games. We want to win the Skyway
and win the Region IV Tournament and another trip to the
NJCAA National Tournament."
Standing in the way of those goals will be Moraine
Valley and Morton in league play. Waubonsee defeated
each of those teams twice in the regular season a year ago.
They also defeated Morton in the first round of the Region
IV Tournament, but lost to Moraine Valley in the semifinal
game. Kishwaukee, Triton and Carl Sandburg should also
prove to be tough obstacles in the region.

HEAD COACH
ASSISTANT COACH
Dave Heiss enters his seven~
season at the helm of the
s basketball program.
his tenure, Heiss has built
Chiefs into a national conwith the team ranked
the last four seasons.
Over that span the team has won 78 percent (102-28) of its
games-the highest mark in the state. During 1989
through 1993 the Chiefs were ranked in the top 15
nationally and had a record of 99-35.
The 2000/2001 season was an exciting and rewarding
year. The Chiefs dominated Skyway Conference competition with an undefeated 12~0 record. They finished 26-6
overall, falling just short of their goal of a second consecutive Region IV title, losing to Moraine Valley in the
semifinal game. A first round win in the Region IV
tournament marked the 300th career victory for Heiss.
One year earlier, WCC advanced to the NJCAAnational
tournament in Danville by defeating Olive Harvey 88-82 in
the Region IV championship game. Waubonsee lost to
Rose State (Okla.) in the first round at nationals. Rose went
on to finish as the national runner-up. The Chiefs finished
the season 25-10 overall. Their 8-4 Skyway Conference
mark was good for second place.
Waubonsee ended the 1990s with six Skyway titles to its
credit. The 1990/91 Chiefs won the Region IV title and finished seventh at the national tournament. Heiss enters this
season with a career record of 300-211 at WCe.
Heiss prepped at Aurora West High School, where his
team finished third in the state. He played collegiate basketball at Eastern Wyoming Junior College and Bemidji
State University. After a stellar four-year college career,
Heiss was invited to the Utah Jazz rookie and free agent
camp in 1986. He played for the Utah Jazz rookie team in
the Pro-Am League that summer.
He earned his bachelor's degree in physical education at
Bemidji State and' his master's degree from Chiqrgo State,·
University. Heiss is a full-time faculty member in the physical education department at Waubonsee. He also coaches
the WCC golf team.
Brad Snead begins his fifth
year as an assistant to head
coach Dave Heiss. His duties
with the club include games and
practice, planning and directing
the "Little Chiefs" basketball
camps and clinics, and recruiting.
the past four years, Snead's recruits have posted
a 102-28 (.780 win pct.) record.
Prior to coaching at Waubonsee, Snead was head freshmen basketball coach at his alma mater, Marmion Military
Academy. After graduation from Marmion in 1994, Snead
played golf and basketball for Aurora University.
Snead spends his summers working and running
basketball camps, including Basketball Skills International,
Old Dominion University and the U.S. Naval Academy.

DANA LETTOW
DICK RINK
ASSISTANT COACH
HEAD COACH
Dana Lettow begins her fifth
year as head coach for the
women's basketball team. While
attending Aurora University
(AU), Lettow, a four-year starter
for the Spartans, was AU's
all-time leading scorer. The school
has retired her Jersey No. 40.
She is a 1997 graduate of AU
where she earned her physical education degree. Lettow
also coaches softball at WCC and works as its full-time
assistant athletic manager.
Head coach Dana Lettow walked into Erickson Hall on
the first day of practice and nearly fell over. "The place
looked like it was packed," she exclaimed.
The gym wasn't full of people in the bleachers, but on
the floor, ready to go, were 10 players. Last year, just nine
players saw action for the Lady Chiefs, and no more than
eight ever dressed at one time for a game.
"This is the largest roster I have had to work with in the
five years I have coached here," claims an exuberant
Lettow. "The larger roster gives us so many more options.
If a player is having a bad game or not working hard
enough, there is always someone on the bench who wants
to play. In the past, we have had to just ride it out with
what we ha&"
Lettow also believes the extra depth will allow the team
to have more endurance at the end of games. "We lost
games last year by one, two, or three points, because we
did not have enough energy at the games," Lettow complains. "Not being able to give your kids those three or
four minute rests throughout the game really affects your
performance at the end."
Defensively, it will allow the team to playa lot more
full-court pressure, and to apply that pressure earlier and
longer in games. Offensively, it will allow the team to run
and fast break more often. In fact, on the first day of practice,
the coaching staff was able to teach the "secondary break
offense."
Another strength of the team this year will be the flexibility of lineups that the larger roster allows. "We can put
in a lineup that is small and very quick or we can put in a
larger lineup that is still pretty quick," says Lettow. "We

Dick Rink begins his fifth
season as assistant coach for the
Lady Chiefs. He previously was
an assistant coach for Aurora
University men's and women's
teams. He is a former girls' basketball coach at Kaneland High
School where he coached Dana
Lettow. He recently retired as a
junior high school teacher for

definitely have a speedy team this year. Even our post
players can get up and down the floor."
Leading the offense and the speed this year will be 5-4
point guard Jaymee Terry from Kaneland. "Terry is the
quickest player I have ever seen in our conference,"
declares Lettow. "We do need to work on her ball-handling skills and keeping her under control."
Lily Escamilla (5-5, Aurora West) and Theresa Coleman
(5-7, Proviso East) will also see action at the number one
guard slot. Coleman and Senora Slater (5-8, Aurora West)
will be in competition to play the number two guard
position.
Andrea Schuppner (5-10, Kaneland), one of just three
returning players for the Lady Chiefs, will have the inside
track at the three position in the offense. Schuppner, a
5-10, guard / forward, injured her knee during warmups
before the first game last season. She averaged 5.1 points
and 2.2 rebounds per game off the bench after coming
back.
Jessica Gonzalez (5-4, Aurora East) will provide competition for Schuppner at the three.
The post position will find Jamie Fitzpatrick (5-9,
Kaneland) and Jen Kauffman (5-11, Somonauk) competing
at the four position. Fitzpatrick averaged 3.5 points and
4.5 rebounds off the bench a year ago.
Antoinette Jones (5-10, Aurora East) and Julie Pendola
(5-10, Riverside-Brookfield) will trade off at the center
spot. Pendola, the only returning starter from last year, led
the team in rebounds with an 8.2 average. She also scored
10.9 points per contest. (cont. page 21)

JOHN ROBINSON
HEAD COACH
John Robinson begins his second year at the helm of the WCC
wrestling program. Last season
he helped three of his four
wrestlers advance to the NJCAA
national tournament. Under
Robinson's tutelage, Benito
Corral was named Waubonsee's
Most Improved Male Athlete at
the annual Awards Banquet last spring.
"Previously; 'Robinson served as a volunteer coach for the
Chiefs. Two years ago he helped oversee a program that
placed 12th in the nation.
Robinson's prior coaching experience included a stint as
a volunteer coach at Plano High School. He also wrestled
in college at the University of Iowa.

Season Preview
Despite the number of wrestlers being down again this
year, second-year coach John Robinson remains optimistic.
Last season Robinson took a team of just four wrestlers to
the NJCAA Region IV meet, but emerged with three of
those wrestlers qualifying for the NJCAA national meet.
Unfortunately for Waubonsee, none of those wrestlers,
Tony LeCuyer, Elioner Higgs and Benito Corral, return
this season. All have exhausted their eligibility. LeCuyer
especially will be missed. He was twice a national qualifier. Last winter, for the second consecutive year, he came
within one win of reaching All-American status at the
national championships. Corral was honored last spring at
the annual Athletic Awards Banquet as the school's Most
Improved Male Athlete.
This season, Robinson welcomed in five wrestlers who
have been consistently showing up for practices this fall.
"I would rather have five wrestlers who want to be here
and want to wrestle than 12 who won't work," declares
Robinson. "These guys all have good attitudes and have
good potential. Last year we had three out of four make
nationals. I would hope for the same ratio this year."
Different this year for the Chiefs is the fact that most of
the wrestlers fit into the upper weight classes. Keith
Chilicki from Geneva is a heavyweight. Robert Arnolde
from Batavia will wrestle at 197, while Matt McGinnis
,,'
from Kaneland is a 174-pounder.
"One advantage of having heavier guys is that we as a
coaching staff can get down and work out with them,"
Robinson claims. "Assistant coach Jeff Anderson and I are
bigger guys, and we could not provide the proper workouts for the smaller guys we had last year."
Blare Roland from Sycamore and Chris Wilson from
Aurora West round out the team this year at the 149 and
157-pound weight classes, respectively.
"Many of these guys were regional champions in high
school," states Robinson. "I believe all of them have a
good shot at being national qualifiers this year if their
commitment is there, and they stick with it all year. "
This year, the Waubonsee schedule features many large
tournaments, including the Golden Eagle Open in Stevens
Point, Wisc., the Turkey Open in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and
the Wisconsin Open in Kenosha, Wisc.
"The Golden Eagle is a good one for us to open with
because they have a freshmen division," says Robinson.
"Granted, they will be Division I caliber wrestlers, but at
least they will also be our first competition where we will
be primarily wrestling those athletes from our region,"
Robinson says. "It will give us a good idea of how well we
match up against those teams."

Season Recap
Second-year men's soccer coach Ray Andrews hit the recruiting trail a year ago, looking to improve his
team that went 9-12-1 in 2000 and finished second in the Skyway Conference Tournament. Unfortunately,
despite bringing in some fine freshmen talent, only three players returned for their sophomore campaign.
Early in the season, all-region goalkeeper, Bob Mendenhall, separated his shoulder, and a season, which
started slowly, began a steep decline. The Chiefs finished with a 4-17 overall record and 0-6 in the Skyway.
The Regular season did end on a note of optimism when freshman speedster Drew Lamirand scored twice
to lead Waubonsee to a 3-2 come-fram-behind win over Kennedy-King College. The Chiefs trailed 2-0 in the
game. Freshman Ryan Brazas tallied the other goal.

place.
Andrews came to Waubonsee after two years as head coach of
freshmen soccer at Geneva High School. His 1999 team went
undefeated for the season.

The Waubonsee volleyball team was ready for a fresh start, and they received it when Jodie Hickey was hired as the new
head coach. The former trainer soon had the team on its toes and in its best shape.
The Lady Chiefs exploded out to a 5-0 start in Skyway Conference action before falling to eventual champion Moraine
Valley. The team finished 9-3 in the league and in second place. Sophomore Amanda Battistella and freshman Melissa
Smith earned Skyway All-Tournament honors.
Amber Jenks, Jennifer Harne~ Cristyl Crawford and Mara Piscitelli were the other sophomores on this experienced

HEAD COACH
Jodie Hickey begins her first
year as head volleyball coach at
Waubonsee.
No stranger to the Sugar Grove
campus, Hickey has served as the
school's athletic trainer since
1992. She also works at Dreyer
Medical clinic as an athletic trainer and is director of
Dreyer's fitness center.
Hickey played two years of volleyball as the starting
setter at Kishwaukee Community College and two more
years at Aurora University where she earned her bachelor's degree in secondary education. While at Kishwaukee,
Hickey earned the team's Most Valuable Player Award and
was named to the All-Region Academic team.
Returning to her alma mater, Malta High School in 1992,
Hickey served as head volleyball coach. She guided that
team to the first Little Ten Conference Tournament
championship in the school's history.
''I'm very excited to get back into the game," says
Hickey. "I played for many years at the high school, collegiate and club levels. My goal is to make this program a
winning program again. I believe with the four or five
players we have returning and with a couple of recruits
we can finish above .500 this season."
Kristen Edecker begins her first
season as assistant volleyball
coach under Jodie Hickey.
Edecker and Hickey have been
playing and coaching together for
several years.
They first played against each
other in high school. Edecker was
a three-year varsity student at
Shabbona High School. They were then teammates for one
season at Kishwaukee Community College. They also
were teammates and roommates for two years at Aurora
University.
Edecker also has garnered coaching experience as an
assistant coach for one year at Rochelle High School and as
head coach for the Sky High Club for a year.
She is currently employed as an accountant for
Engineered Storage Products in DeKalb.

Seas.on Re.cap:
Veteran Waubonsee women's tennis coach Doug Hill has never seen anything like it. And he hopes to
never see it again. The Waubonsee women's tennis team in 2001 did not record a single victory. Not only did
they not win a single head-to-head matchup, but they also failed to win a single match all season. The
drought applied to singles as well doubles matches.
Sophomores Julie Roake and Heather Bartholomew competed in their second year for the Lady Chiefs.
Carrie Gatske, Antoinette Jones and Emily Alcorn were the freshmen on the team. The team was
undermanned with only five players.

No other Waubonsee golf team has ever done it in the history of the college. The 2001 Chiefs captured the
NJCAA Region IV title and earned a trip to the national championship. Along the way, Waubonsee won
seven of nine tournaments they participated in. On Sept. 6, 2001 at the Palos Hills Country Club, the team set
a new school record by firing a 300 total. Waubonsee swept every Skyway Conference tournament this fall to
snare its first league title since 1989.
wce s championship team included Aaron Conlon and Dustin Darnold who earned return trips to the
national competition. They earned individual berths into national competition a year ago. Now they will go
as part of a team. Bryan Stoniecki, Rob Bauman, Joe Pircon, Jeremy Gates and Tim Wirth also helped the
Chiefs in their historic season.

The Waubonsee men's cross country team featured experience, while the women's team was composed of
all freshmen. Lorenzo Clark, Chris Gerber and Dan Latta all return from a 2000 team that won the Skyway
Conference. Those three sophomores will team with Matt Coryell, Henry Norris, Frank Thorn and Nathan
Dent to once again make a run at the Skyway title. Gerber placed sixth in the Region IV meet a year ago and
will be looking for a return trip to nationals.
According to 18-year veteran head coach, John Bell, his women's team will be the strongest he's ever had
at Waubonsee. Sharon Metzger should be the top runner for the ladies with a chance at winning both the
conference and regional crowns. Megan Ranallo, Tricia Overhaug, Jennifer Tumey, Jessica Cisneros, Jennifer
Hubbard and Jaymee Terry round out a very talented group of freshmen.

Country
John Bell
Head Coach
For 18 seasons John Bell has been leaving his mark on Waubonsee's men's and women's
cross country teams. He is the second-longest tenured coach at the school.
Last spring Bell was named the first Skyway Community College Conference's Men's Sports
Coach of the Year. He was honored with a plaque at the conference's annual president's
meeting. The 2000/2001 academic year was the first time the Skyway has awarded its "best-ofthe best" awards for its coaches.
For only the second time in Skyway history, a coach has led two teams to conference titles in
the same year. In the fall, Coach Bell guided the men's cross country team to a co-Skyway
championship. In the spring, Bell piloted his men's tennis team to an undefeated conference season, then swept the
Skyway tournament, winning all six singles flights and all three doubles flights. His tennis team then went on to tie for
the Region IV title and placed 20th in the NJCAA national tournament.
Nominees for these prestigious coaching awards are selected based on their overall team success, academic integrity,
contributions to the Skyway, Region IV and NJCAA, their individual character and years of commitment.
Bell has coached the men's tennis team at Waubonsee for two years. He was named the Skyway Men's Tennis Coach
of the Year in 2001 and has been the Skyway Cross Country Coach of the Year the past seven seasons.
A retired track coach and teacher at West Aurora High School, Bell continues to work there as a substitute teacher.
Every year the school hosts the "John Bell Invitational" track and field meet in his honor.
