CALL: 851-6823 MONDAY - FRIDAY ASK FOR DONNA!!! w c c WELCOME [J] t is my pleasure to share this issue of the Waubonsee Community College 1991 Spring Sports Program with current and prospective WCC athletes, students and community residents. This program booklet reflects the accomplishments and achievements attained by four Waubonsee Community College athletic programs - Men's Tennis, Softball and Baseball. In reviewing this booklet, I hope you will recognize the outstanding accomplishments our individual athletes, and their teams, have achieved through the athletic program at Waubonsee. The development of pride and the establishment of fine personal relationships are also attributes of the WCC athletic program. These lifelong experiences - athletic, personal and academic -work together to prepare students for the "big game" - life and the future. We take pride in being champions at Waubonsee, but most of all, we recognize that our coaches and players strive to be examples for others to follow. I hope you will enjoy this program booklet and that you will continue to be associated with a group of winners - the Waubonsee Community College "Fighting Chiefs." John J. Swalec, Ph.D. President CONSIDER WAUBONSEE FIRST Academics are an important part of Waubonsee's Athletic program. Waubonsee players are fortunate to receive their first two years of higher education at an outstanding institution, while participating in a variety of sports. Students who attend a community college are satisfying their freshmen and sophomore educational requirements equivalent to the first two years of study at a senior institution. Transfer programs usually consist of general education courses in a chosen major field along with ele.ctive courses, which lead to a bachelor's degree. Fifty-five percent of all freshmen students in college attend a community college. Community colleges are growing and offer students an alternative to enrolling immediately at a senior institution. At four major state universities (NIU, SIU, WIU, ISU) more than 30 percent of thei r underg rad uate students attended a community college first. Their own studies show that the community college transfer students do academically as well, if not better, than students who enrolled initially at their university. For example, over the previous 12 years Coach Randall has coached more than 150 players. More than 60 percent of these players continued their education after Waubonsee by transferring to a senior college. During the last AACJA accreditation, Waubonsee was accredited and ranked in the top five percent of the more than 1,200 community colleges across the United States. In keeping pace to Waubonsee's committment to academics, the Athletic Department has designed special orientations for freshmen athletes to assist them in course registration. Additionally, the Athletic Department works closely with the Developmental Education Department and has an acagemic monitoring system for all athletes. If you would like more information about Waubonsee's educational programs and services, call the WCC Counseling Center at (708) 466-4811, ext. 361. Waubonsee's teams have the benefit of playing and practicing in Erickson Hall which has an aerobic/dance studio, wrestling room, two batting cages, Fitness Center, and a 1,500 seat gymnasium. The outdoor facilities include eight tennis courts, softball field, wooded cross country trail, batting cage and a baseball diamond. Off-campus sites include the Fox Bend Country Club and the Aurora Tennis Club. Waubonsee athletes play their first two years at Waubonsee competing against other freshman and sophomores while attaining their associate degree. After graduation from Waubonsee, many student athletes are recruited to play at four-year colleges and universities while they complete course work toward a bachelor's degree. Over the past three years, over 90 percent of Waubonsee's sophomore athletes have transferred to four-year schools, and 40 percent of those transferring are playing athletics at their respective colleges. The Waubonsee Community College Foundation holds an annual golf outing to raise funds for athletic scholarships which can be used by in-district graduates. Scholarships from the Foundation and financial aid help recruit quality athletes to Waubonsee. WAUBONSEE COLLEGE 1991 SPRING SPORTS GUIDE/3 w Cc ACADEMICS ATHLETIC ACADEMICS Waubonsee student athletes not only have success on the playing fields, but have also shown great success in the classroom. WAUBONSEE COLLEGE 1991 SPRING SPORTS GUIDEI1 w c c MEN'S BA~EBALL Front Row Sitting (left to right): Dan Brown, Tim Griesman, Doug Mefford, Chris Yarman, Mark Nilles, Steve Beckwith, Brian Hoxsey. Middle Row Kneeling (left to right): Scott Card, Dean Culotta, Michael Jourdan, Jeff Karnik, Tony Schlekeway, Jason Gogo, Rich Johnston. Back Row Standing (left to right): Coach Dave Randall, Chad Johnson, Steve Hortega, Jeff Arroyo, Ryan Farster, Todd Cole, Brett Wing, Eric Kartheiser, Todd Lane, Jim Shanks. OUTLOOK With nine returning letterman, the Chiefs team promises to be a well-balanced squad both defensively and offensively. On offense, Waubonsee, well known for its running and buntin, will unveil more long ball power throug h out the line-up in 1991, giving third base coach Pete Gama more options to use in his aggressive approach. INFIELD: The infield is not deep, but has excellent quality and experience. Sophomore Tom Schlekeway returns to third base while last year's leading hitter Brett Wing returns to first base. The other returning starter is Brian Hoxsey, who will move over from second base to shortstop. He will be joining the squad late, following tournament play with Waubonsee's nationally-ranked basketball team. Freshman Steve Hortega takes over at second base, while another freshman Jeff Arroyo, will be seen at several infield positions when he is not pitching. With early season injuries and Brian Hoxsey's late arrival, the acquisition of reverse transfer student Dan Brown has proven to be a valuable addition. Dan can play three different positions well. Freshman Scott Card rounds out the infield and he will be backing-up Wing at first base. OUTFIELD: The outfield is solid and will be anchored by speedster Chris Yarman in center field. Right field will feature returning player Dean Culotta, who has turned into a fine defensive player after making the adjustment from first base. Sophomore transfer student Tim Griesman will be playing left field, with Mark Nilles rotating through all the outfield positions. Freshmen Eric Kartheiser and Jeff Karnik keep on improving and will see plenty of action. CATCHERS: Sophomore Todd Cole returns to the Chiefs starting role after missing the 1990season with a knee injury. Freshman Doug Mefford will provide good back up catching. PITCHERS: Waubonsee has always been known to have quality pitching at the top, and this year's team should have plenty of depth. Sophomore Rich Johnston had five victories in '90 and will be the Chiefs number one pitcher, while last years relief specialist, Todd Lane (17 appearances) and ever-improving sophomore Steve Beckwith, will challenge each other for rotatioinal duty. The addition of three quality freshman recruits will provide the staff with the added talent. Jeff Arroyo, Jason Gogo and Ryan Farster will also get their opportunity to perform while Michael Jourdan completes the staff. 8/WAUBONSEE COLLEGE 1991 SPRING SPORTS GUIDE w c c MEN'S BASEBALL DAVE RANDALL Head Coach Men's Baseball Dave is a former team captain of the 1973 Chiefs squad. During the fall season, walk-ons attempt to make the squad. Each year, several players make the team as a walk-on. Formal practices start in January and lead-up to a 50 game schedule that includes flying down for a 12-game Southern trip through Kentucky and Tennessee. During the winter months, Waubonsee's baseball team has the luxury of two indoor batting cages, three indoor pitching mounds and an outstanding Fitness Center. Waubonsee competes in the tough Skyway Conference and plays in the NJCAA post-season tournament. The Chiefs are traditionally noted for their tough, aggressive defense and use of the running and bunting game as one of their key offensive weapons. Many top baseball players attended Waubonsee first. This gave them the opportunity, as freshman, to play immediately. The four-year colleges recruit heavily from the community colleges to fill a position with a proven college player. At the end of the regular season, Region IV holds an Annual All-Star game to showcase the top sophomores for college and professional scouts. In his 14 years, Coach Randall has had 56 former players recruited to play baseball at four-year colleges, while four have signed professional contracts. The Man in The Glass When you get what you want in the struggle for self and the world makes you king for a day, Just go to the mirror and look at yourself, and see what that man has to say. For it isn't your father or mother or wife whose judgement upon you must pass; The fellow whose verdict counts most in your life is the one staring back from the glass. Some people may think you're a straight-shooting chum and call you a wonderful guy, But the man in the glass says you're only a bum if you can't look him straight in the eye. He's the fellow to please, never mind the rest for he's with you clear to the end, and you've passed your most dangerous, difficult test if the man in the glass is your friend. You may fool the whole world down the pathway of years and get pats on the back as you pass, But your final reward will be heartaches and tears if you've cheated the man in the glass.
