Being situated at the mouth of the river
Ozama, the port is subject to continues
silting.
East Bank Sans Souci Passenger Terminal
and West Bank General Cargo Berths nr.1
to nr.7-including “Don Diego” Passenger
Terminal-and Petroleum Pier-just before
Floating Bridge-are under the administration
of “Sans Souci Ports Santo Domingo”. The
bottom in the entrance channel and harbor
consists generally of soft mud and silt. For

Vertical Clearance: The least vertical
clearances under bridges and overhead
cables is 32,5 m.
Anchorage:
Deep
water
anchorage
available outside the port. The pilot will
indicate the best location, if requested.
An area 2½ cables South of the breakwater,
shown on the chart is designated as
anchorage; Lat. 18° 27.500´N; Long. 069°
53.100´ W.
If the weather threatens, it is advisable to
put to sea, as a heavy sea is liable to cause
the anchor to drag.
Pilotage: Pilot is compulsory and can be
contacted by VHF Channel 16 or 12. Pilot
boards approximately 1 mile South of
breakwater.
Tidal range and flow:
Mean spring range 0,20 m
Mean neap range 0,10 m
Current in the river has a normal rate of
1 ½ kn, but it is reported that the rate in the
rainy season can reach from 4 ½ to 8 kn.
With these high rates turning large vessels
can be difficult.
Density of water: Brackish inside the
harbour; depending on the location of the
berth, time of year (rainy or dry season),
and tidal condition the exact density will

vary from 1.016 to1.025. Contact agents for

Tugs: are available and compulsory for
docking and undocking inside the harbor.
They will also join vessel outside for an
additional fee in case required. At least one
tug of about 1200 H.P. is normally stationed
in the port. A tug of 2000 H.P. can be
brought from Rio Haina upon request and
min. 24 hours prior notice.
Medical attention: Full first class medical
attention available in Santo Domingo
including hospitalization.

Repairs: Dry-docking and workshops are
available at Las Calderas, Ciramar
International Shipyard is operating three
floating docks and in this way any ship
under 200 m x 33 m x 7 m, can be drydocked there.
Legus Enterprises has a three levels
Graving Dock at Santo Domingo Ozama
River east bank; 156 m x 16 m x 5 m. But
currently Legus Enterprises is out of
operations.
Smaller workshops, internationally
recognized machinery representatives and
Class Societies Surveyors are allowed to
attend customers as requested by Ship
Owners. They can carry repairs afloat.
Sans Souci Passenger Terminal-East
Bank: 0,8 km from Ozama River Entrance.
This berth is 300 meters (984 ft) long and
the apron is 17 metres (56 ft) wide; the pier
is approximately 2.6 metres (9 ft) above the
water line at high tide. This terminal is
located on the Eastern bank of the Ozama
River and passengers are transported by
bus or taxi to the Colonial Centre of Santo
Domingo, which is about 3 kilometers from
Sans Souci
Minimal depth: 9,7 m (32 ft) LWL brackish
water.
There is a circular turning basing 360 m dia.
beside the terminal, 9,7 m (31,8 ft) depth.
Facilities: The Sans Souci Terminal was
built in the mid-1970’s and is operated by
Sans Souci Ports. Arrangements can be
made arriving/departing passengers.
Fresh Water: provided by piping alongside
at 20 t/hr rate.
Airport/Repatriation:
Las Americas
International Airport is 20 km away, and is
served by major international airlines. There
are frequent connections to European
countries and with North and South
America. Very conveniently used for
repatriation or joining crews.
Bunkers: Fuel and Diesel oil are available
by tank truck. Arrangements to be made in
advance through Maritima Dominicana
S.A.S. Trucks carry up to 37,8 m3(10 000
US gallons).
Fresh Water: Water is available by tank
trucks only. Arrangements through Maritima
Dominicana S.A.S. when required. Berth
operators are restoring former direct piping
supply systems.
Working Hours: Around the clock; but
always after corresponding Charter Party
arrangements.
Sans Souci Liquid Bulk Cargo Berth-East
Bank: This berth, sometimes referred to
as”Punta Torrecilla”, is located in Sans
Souci on Eastern bank of the Ozama River

Molinos del Ozama-East Bank: 1,0 km
from Ozama River Entrance. A Private berth
belonging to the local flour mill of the same
name located on the Eastern Bank of the
Ozama River. It is a berth used exclusively
for bulk cargoes, mostly wheat and malt, but
occasionally corn and other grain and grain
products. Maximum vessel size is about
220 m (720 ft.) LOA and 32 m (105 ft.)
BEAM. The pier is a central Jetty about
12,5 m long, 9,0 m wide and 1.70 metres
above the water line at high tide. This berth
consists of three flying dolphins with the
stationary pneumatic discharging equipment
and conveyor system in the middle on a
tower platform. Suction equipment is Vigan
make, model NIV 200, has a boom length
20 m, and with a 0,75 t/m3 density grain is
able to handle 250 t / hrMinimal Depth: 8,8m (28,85ft) LWL
brackish water.
Storage facilities: Molinos del Ozama has
silo storage for about 90,000 metric tons of

grain which are fed by a conveyor belt
directly from the vessel alongside.
General Cargo Berth Nr.1- +
General Cargo Berth Nr.2 West Bank
280 m (920ft) long (together) and apron is
approx. 13 m (42 ft) wide. The pier is about
1.8 m (6 ft.) above the water line at high
tide. General cargo is mostly discharged at
this berth, including forest products.
Minimal depth: 7,3-7,0 m nearly salt water
as this berth is at the very entrance nearest
the breakwater.
Storage facilities no longer in service. Still
wide spaces for containers and trailers yard
including motor vehicles.
Forklifts of 4.5 tons, 6 tons and 10 tons are
available. Motorcranes and other heavy
equipment must not be used at this berth
due to the poor structural condition of the
pier.
General Cargo Berth No.3-West Bank:
The berth is 167 m (548 ft) long and the
apron approx. 8 m (26 ft) wide; the pier is
about 1.80 m (6 ft) above the water level at
high tide. This berth requires serious
repairs. An intensive overhaul is needed. It
is presently Out of Operations.
General Cargo Berths No.4 and 5-West
Bank: These berths are 300 m (983 ft) long
and the apron is approx. 17 m (55 ft) wide;
the pier is about 1,5 m (5 ft) above the water
line.The berth is used for trailers, containers
and general break bulk cargo.
Minimal depth: 6 m (20 ft) brackish.
Open storage available for trailers,
containers, etc.
Berth No.6- / Berth no.7 Don Diego
Tourist Passenger Terminal-West Bank:
This berth is 400 m (1,310 ft) long and the
pier is about 2,15 – 2,95 m (7.0 -9,0ft)
above the water line. Apron width 8,0-11,0
m (26,2 – 36 ft.) This berth has been
converted from the use for general break
bulk cargo and containers to passenger
cruise vessels only and it is not available for

any cargo vessels. Puerto Rico Passengers
Ferry is the time being using this Pier
Minimum depth: 8,3 m (27,2 ft. brackish
water
Fresh water: Available alongside by pipeline.
Petrolero – West Bank
Just beside Floating Bridge, down the river.
Good for tankers up to 115 m length,
7,4 m (24,2 ft.) depth. This place is
adequate for the fuel of power plant supply.
Legus Enterprises-East Bank:
3,0 km from Ozama River Entrance and
placed at East Bank and Curacao St.
Formerly “Félix Benítez Shipyard” and it is a
small shipyard that includes a graving dock
which can handle 156 m (510 ft) LOA and
16 m (50 ft) BEAM and 5m (16,5 ft) DRAFT.
The pier is 200 m (655 ft) long and the
apron about 12 m (40 ft) wide. There is an
airdraft restriction of 32 m (105 ft) to this
berth due to bridges en route. This shipyard
has not modernized its facilities in the last
25 years and hence is not very efficient, but
some steelwork and topside repairs are
carried out regularly as well as bottom
cleaning, etc.
Minimum depth: 6.0 m (20 ft) FW.
Fresh water: Available alongside from
pipeline at a rate of about 10 t / hour. The
shipyard is by the time being out of
operations,
M & D Marine Repairs-East Bank:
3,2 km from Ozama River Entrance and
placed at East Bank and Gabriela Murillo
St.(Bajada de La Mora).
A Central Pier, 15 m (50ft) long and 12 m
(40ft) apron combined with two “flying
dolphins” can allow vessels 130 m (430 ft)
LOA, drawing 5 m (16,4ft) FW.
Presently this berth is very adequate as a
laid up pier and for extensive repairs afloat.
Placing a barge between ship and pier river
depth could be increased until 7,3 m (24ft).

Silo storage, less than 6000 m3 and small
farm tanks need to be updated before be
used.
PETROLEX OVERSEAS-East Bank
3,6 km from Ozama River Entrance and
placed at East Bank and Rosa Duarte St.
This facility is a private installation used for
discharging small parcels of liquid and dry
bulk cargoes. Tallow, caustic soda, yellow
grease, etc, and less frequently feed grain
ingredients such as corn, soybeans,
soybean meal, peanut meal, etc. are
discharged eventually. The berth is
designed to accommodate vessels up to
130 m (430 ft) LOA and has a small central
pier of approximately 25 m (80ft) long and
12 m (40ft) wide and three flying dolphins
for tying up the vessel. The vessel is
warped alongside in order to shift
discharging from one hold to another.
Maximal depth: 6,0 m (19,5 ft) FW.
Storage facilities: Warehouses and tanks
for about 10,000 m3 of dry bulk cargoes and
155000 m3 of liquid bulk cargoes on their
own premises.
Equipment: Pipeline from the berth to the
tanks for the liquid bulk cargo can handle
asphalt, fuel oil and diesel through
independent and adequate flanges 8” ASA
300 / 6” ASA 300.
Also they have two steel tank barges 3700
m3 each.
Only ships scrapping activities in progress.
Vessels up to 130 m (430 ft) drawing less
than 3,5 m (11,4 ft) FW can be brought
alongside river bank and moored on six
sunken poles ashore.
Dangerous Cargo Regulations:The
International Maritime Dangerous
Goods Code-IMDG- is fully implemented
at Dominican Republic Ports including
Santo Domingo.
Port Facility Security: I.S.P.S. Code
was certified by Autoridad Portuaria
Dominicana (APORDOM) at every pier.
Sans Souci Ports-S.S.P.- facilities are
provided with private armed guards
from SEGURIASA-and SPD- Harbor
Protection Specialists-and subject to
CESEP final control ship to ship.
Port State Control Inspection: Since
2010 Implementation of the Port State
Control to all ships at territorial waters
was carried out according to the “Viña
del Mar Agreement”
Metales Antillanos S.A.-Isabela Rivertributary of the Ozama-6,5 km from
Ozama River Entrance and placed at
Isabela River North Bank and Maximo
Gómez Avenue.
Presently only activity is scrapping.
Vessels up to 130 m (430 ft) drawing less
than 3,5 m (11,4 ft) FW can be brought
alongside a central platform 10 m (33 ft)
long x 3 m (10ft) wide.
Astilleros Río San Juan-Ozama RiverEast Bank-7,8 km from entrance- beside
La Barquita. Ozama River and Luperón
