Appearance: The Peregrine Falcon is a large falcon. Male and female look alike, but the male (the tiercel) is about one-third smaller than the female (the falcon). Adults have a dark slate-blue back and wings. The dark-blue tail shows light barring. The underside is light with vertical streaks across the breast, belly and legs. You can also look for the bright yellow cere (the fleshy area behind the base of the bill), legs and feet. Like other falcons, the peregrine has a dark malar stripe running down each side of its face. Malar stripes help shield the falcon’s eyes from the sun as it is hunting prey. Fun Facts! From beak to tail they can be from 16 to 25 inches long, but they only weigh between 1 and 2 1/3 pounds. Sound: Peregrine Falcons are usually silent. They use a loud, rapid “kak-kak-kak-kak-kak-kak-kak” call as an alarm, usually when they feel their nest is threatened. Flight: Meet the fastest raptor on earth! When hunting it can fly up to 69 mph and then will go into a dive call a “stoop.” During its spectacular hunting stoop, the peregrine can reach speeds over 200 mph. When hunting medium- to large-sized birds, it uses its feet to deliver a blow that can kill its prey in mid-flight. When hunting small birds, it typically snatches them out of the air with its talon talons. Fun Facts! Because of their exceptional hunting skills, Peregrine Falcons have been used in falconry for more than 1,000 years. They are also occasionally used to scare away birds at airports (to reduce the risk of bird-plane strikes). During World War II, they were used to intercept homing pigeons. What it eats: Peregrine Falcons feed almost exclusively on birds. In cities, they are masterful at catching pigeons. Elsewhere, they feed largely on songbirds, shorebirds and ducks. They often sit on high perches, waiting for the right opportunity to make their aerial assaults. Fun Facts! They have been observed killing birds as large as Sandhill Cranes and as small as Hummingbirds. Where you will see one: Peregrine Falcons are found on every continent in the world, except Antarctica. Look for them in open spaces with high cliffs and bluffs overlooking rivers and coasts. Many cities with tall buildings have become home to pairs of peregrines. Many populations are migratory and will travel great distances. 1920 Fitch Ave., St. Paul, MN 55108 Email: [email protected] Phone: 612-624-4745 Fax: 612-624-8740 Peregrine Falcon Word Find Find the words forward, backward, or diagonally!
