Rock climbers know the Gunks by regina mcenery
S
hort for the Shawangunk
Mountains, this ridge of
bedrock with spectacular views of the Hudson
Valley boasts more than
1,200 routes and is widely considered
one of the best places on the East Coast
for traditional or “trad” climbing.
While there is a lot to the style
of trad climbing, it essentially boils
down to this: depending on one’s own
instincts and equipment to scale a
rock. Traditionalists carry their own
gear, such as metal gizmos, which they

wedge into crevices to arrest a fall.
They then remove the gear when a
passage is complete.
This is essentially what scaling
mountains used to be about until
the debut of sport climbing, a more
competitive style that relies on preplanned routes and fixed anchors.
As luck would have it, the Gunks,
which straddle Orange, Sullivan and
Ulster counties and is a stone’s throw
from the funky 1960s-like college
town of New Paltz, seems particularly well suited for this purer, more
contemplative style of climbing. The
fact that the heart of the Gunks is only
about a two-hour drive from Manhattan makes it a convenient choice
for legions of tri-staters hungry for
outdoor thrills.
Free climbers Fritz Wiessner and
Hans Kraus, pioneers of modern rock
climbing, are generally credited with
making the Gunks a destination in the
1930s, but its rich history of climbing
also includes the conservative Appalachian Club and the counter-cultural
vulgarians, who climbed nude and
opposed the licensing of climbers.
Climbs in the Gunks generally center around four cliffs: Millbrook, the
Near Trapps, The Trapps, and Skytop,
which is owned by Mohonk Mountain
House in New Paltz and requires an
escort. The typical climbing season
runs from April to mid-November, but
don’t be surprised to find experienced
climbers embracing the Gunks in winter, weather permitting.
Long-time climber Bob Ferrari says
the Gunks are notable for their good
overhangs, ladders of huge handholds
that enable even less-experienced
hikers to get up and down, and a
broad range of routes, including some
extremely steep ones that rank among
the most difficult in the world. However, most of the routes are suited for
moderately skilled climbers.
Ferrari gave up racing cars – no
shabby sport that – 23 years ago
to scale mountains. Today, he runs
HighXposure Adventures, Inc., a climbing school and guide service in the
southwestern corner of the Mohonk
Mountain Preserve in New Paltz that is
committed to turning people on to the
joys and challenges of rock climbing.
“The best thing for me to hear is
that ‘I’ve never climbed before,’” Ferrari says. “That means there are no bad
habits to break.”

No matter how great it is to be with
your man, sometimes you just need a
night out with the girls. Let him take
care of the kids while you get dolled
up to chat over drinks and a good
meal with your ladies. Famous for
its brick -oven pizzas and pomodoro
sauce, Cosimo’s (www.cosimospoughkeepsie.com) in Poughkeepsie is a casual but refined locale. Sip
some cocktails and choose from the
19 pizza options — as well as the
myriad other entrées on the menu.
Beacon’s Dim Sum GoGo (www.
dimsumgogobeacon.com) offers
authentic dim sum and Chinese cuisine. Located in a renovated bank
building (the door to the vault is
still visible), the chic interior exudes
sophistication, and the outdoor seating area lets guests take in the charm
of Main Street in the warmer months.

Orange County 11.5 miles.
Surface: Multi-use asphalt.
From downtown Goshen to Monroe

This 10-foot-wide trail cuts through prominent
areas in Orange County, such as the Chester
Depot Museum in Chester and St. James Place in
Goshen, as well as several wildlife sanctuaries.
The trail runs parallel to the old Erie Railroad
Main Line and provides an invigorating route for
foot and bike traffic.
Dutchess Rail Trail
Eastern Dutchess County 13.4 miles.
Surface: Dual, paved/soft
From Hopewell Junction to the Walkway
Over the Hudson

The final mile of this trail, which stretches eastwest across the middle of Dutchess County, was
completed in 2013. This allowed the trail to connect with the Walkway Over the Hudson — and
a network of trails on the other side of the river.

Black Creek Wetlands Complex, where they can

The paved trail ends at the park, but a mile-long
stretch of breathtaking landscapes lies beyond,
eventually bringing voyagers to a double bridge,
which curves over a creek.
Wallkill Valley Rail Trail

From Wallkill to Kingston

The scenic trail, built entirely by volunteers, is
pedestrian-, biker-, and even horseback riderfriendly. It runs alongside the Wallkill River
through New Paltz, Rosendale, and Gardiner.
Visitors pass over beautiful bridges to reach the
940-foot-long Rosendale Trestle, which sits 150
feet above the Rondout Creek.
Harlem Valley Rail Trail
Dutchess and Columbia Counties 15 miles.
Surface: Paved
From Wassaic Station to Millerton Station (10.7
miles), Under Mountain Road to Copake Falls
Station (3.8 miles) and a few short miles in
Hillsdale.

While the trail is still in development, the three sections above are currently open to the public. However, when the route is complete, it will extend 46.1
miles from Wassaic’s Metro-North train station all
the way to Chatham in Columbia County.

so majestic that it has ruined
other…ordinary… rivers. But
what can we say? We certainly
won’t apologize. In fact, we’ll
relish every season of it, even
those trying frozen months,
just as Valley residents have
for centuries. In fact, from
canoeing and boating to
stand-up paddleboarding
and ice yachting (yes, ice
yachting), we’ve gotten pretty
good at making use of our
one-of-a-kind waterway.

he ways to enjoy the River are
innumerable. By the Hudson,
over the Hudson, viewing the
Hudson. But we’d argue that getting
out on the Hudson is quite possibly the
best way to take advantage of it. Here’s
a snapshot of a few ways to do just that:
Kayaking
Kayaking is arguably one of the best
ways to marry physical activity with
sightseeing. Granted, you may not
go as far as the jet skis whizzing by,
but you earn your mileage with each
stroke, and the sights are all the better for it. Whether you’re just getting
a handle on paddling or you’re a triedand-true expert, and whether you’re
out to get your triceps burning or to
gently take in the scenery, there are a
number of options to suit your needs.
Kris Seiz, who owns Storm King
Adventure Tours in Cornwall-onHudson and has a marine biology
background, has spent the past seven
years renting kayaks and arranging
three-hour excursions that explore
the natural and historical wonders of
the River and its tributaries. One of
his most popular outings is The Bannerman Island Castle tour, a leisurely
paddle around the stunning, decaying
landmark on tiny Pollepel Island. The
Scottish-style castle was built as an
arsenal by Francis Bannerman in the
early 20th century to store inventory of
the material that he sold to the Ameri-
