your driver’s licence
Step 1. Learner’s permit
You must be at least 16 years old
You will need:
• Yourbirthcertificateforidentification.
• Documentsthatshowyoursignatureandhome
address.
• Youwillneedtopaymoneytodotheroadrulestest.
• Whenyoupasstheroadrulestest,youwillneed
topaymoneyforyourdriver’slicenceapplication
(learner’spermit).
• Youwillgetonefreedrivingtestwiththisapplication.
Step 2. Learning to drive
• Whenyouarelearningtodriveyoumusthavea
licenceddriverwithyouatalltimes.Theymustholda
licencethatallowsthemtodriveavehicleofthesame
typeaswhatisprintedonyourlearner’spermitand
haveheldthelicencefor4yearsormore.
• Youwillhavetopaysomemoneytobeissueda
Learner Guide and Log book.
• Youhavetodoatleast25hoursofdriving.You
cannotgotothenextstepunlessyoucanshowthat
the25hoursofdrivinghasbeencompleted.Sokeep
thelogbookinasafeplaceandmakesureyoudo
notloseit.
• Writedowninthelogbookallthetimesyoudriveand
thelicenceddriverwithyoumustsignthelogbook.
• Thelogbookisalegaldocumentsoeverythingthatis
writteninitmustbetrue.
• Don’tspeed.Rememberyoucanonlydo100km/h
ontheopenroadswith110km/hsigns.
• Youmustput‘L’platesonthecarwhenyouare
learningtodrive(frontandback).
• Whenlearning,youmaydriveatnight,towatrailer
andcarrypassengers.
• No alcohol is allowed.
Step 3. Driving test
Youmustbeatleast16yearsand6monthsold
• Youmusthaveagoodcar(allsignalsworking,brake
lightsworking,goodtyresandhaveacentrally
locatedhandbrake)whenyoudothedrivingtest.
• Ifyoudonotpass,youneedtopayforanothertest.
• YouneedtotakeyourLearner Guide and Log book
withyoutothetestsoyoucanshowthe25hours
ofsuperviseddrivinghasbeendonebeforeyoucan
takethedrivingtest.
Step 4. Gain Experience
• Youhavetodoatleastanother25hoursof
superviseddrivingovera6monthperiod.You
cannotgotothenextstepunlessyoucanshowthat
the25hoursofdrivinghasbeendone.
• Youmusthavealicenseddriverwithyouatalltimes.
Theymusthavealicencethatallowsthemtodrivea
vehicleofthesametypeaswhatisprintedonyour
learner’spermitandhaveheldthelicencefor4years
or more
• Donotspeed.Rememberyoucanstillonlydo
100km/honopenroadswith110km/hsigns.
• Youmustput‘L’platesonthecarwhenyouare
driving(frontandback).
• Youdonothavetofinishthewholelogbook,aslong
asyoucompleteanother25hoursafteryourdriving
test.
• Youmustwait6monthsafterpassingthedriving
testbeforeyoucanmoveontoStep5.
Step5.Hazardperceptiontest
• You must be at least 17 years old.
• Youmayhavetopassacomputertesttoseeifyou
candealwithdifferenttrafficsituationsandmake
safedrivingdecisions.
• TakeyouridentificationandLearner Guide and Log
booktothelicensingoffice.
• You will have to pay some money to sit the test.
Step 6. Drivers licence (‘P’ plates)
• Whenyouhavecompletedallthestepsandpay
somemoremoneyyouwillgetyourlicence.
• Youwillhaveyourphototakenforyourlicenceand
receiveasetof‘P’plates.
• Youmustdisplayred‘P’platesforthefirst6months
ofgettingyourlicence.Duringthese6monthsyou
cannotdrivebetweenmidnightand5:00am.
• After6monthsyoumustdisplaygreen‘P’platesfor
another18monthsonyourcar(frontandback)and
youcannowdriveaftermidnight.
• Youcanonlyhaveatotalof3demeritpointsforthe
firstyearonyour‘P’platesand7demeritpoints
onthesecondyearofyour‘P’plates.Ifyouget
morepointsthanyouareallowedyouwillloseyour
licence.
• No alcohol is allowed.
You cannot drive on a road unless
you have a drivers licence or
learners permit. There are big
penalties if you drive without a
licence or permit.

roadswith110km/hsigns.
• Youmustput‘L’platesonthe
carwhenyouarelearningto
drive(frontandback).
• Youmustbesupervisedwhen
driving.
Red ‘P’ plates
• Youmustshowyourred‘P’
platesforsixmonthsafteryou
getyourprovisionallicence.
• Duringthistimeyoucan’tdrive
betweenmidnightand5.00am.
Green ‘P’ plates
• Afterthefirstsixmonths,you
mustshowthegreen‘P’plates
for18monthsonyourcar.
• Whenyouareonyourgreen
‘P’plates,youcandriveafter
midnight.
