Welcome to the Supper Club
Capital of the Midwest !
®
Try one, try them all. No matter where you go,
you will not leave disappointed or hungry!
What is a supper club you may ask? The
easiest way of putting it….a dining experience like no other that includes a whole
lot of food for not too much money. Your
experience starts at the bar where the most
popular drink ordered is the Old Fashioned.
Food orders are placed while in the bar.
A typical meal may include a relish tray,
bread, soup, salad, an entrée such as steak,
chicken or fish and ice cream drinks for dessert. You will be notified when it’s your turn
to dine. Then it’s off to the dining room to
look for your table. Most supper clubs are
multi-generational family run businesses
and feature recipes that have been around
just as long. You can’t be in a hurry though.
The experience could take a couple of
hours, especially if you go on a weekend.
Calumet County has plenty of supper clubs
to choose from. It is unknown why there
are so many in the area, but one theory is
because the region was settled by men and
women who worked hard in the farm fields
and needed a ‘night out’ at the end of the
week. Shown here are the supper clubs in
Calumet County. For a map of these supper clubs, along with others just outside the
county, order your free Supper Club Capital
of the Midwest® and Fish Fry Map through
the ‘Contact Us’ page of travelcalumet.com.

Sturgeon Spearing
The year starts frozen with a quiet stillness,
but that changes in February, especially on
Lake Winnebago. Sturgeon spearing season
starts Saturday, February 13, and continues
until Sunday, February 28, if the limit has
not been met. A community of ice shanties
scatters across the frozen lake as hopeful
spearers partake in this annual tradition
of trying to land one of these prehistoric,
mammoth-sized fish. Even if you don’t have
a license to spear (licenses needed by Oct.
31), you can still get in the spirit. Stop by
one of the registration stations for a firsthand glimpse of these monsters.

Winnebago:
High Cliff State Park is a multi-level state

Calumet County invites you to
explore its very own piece of an
international geologic landform.
The Niagara Escarpment spans the middle of the
North American continent, connecting countries,
as it stretches from Wisconsin through parts of
Canada to Niagara Falls in the State of New
York. Locally, it is often known as “the Ledge.”
NIAGARA
ESCARPMENT
It’s towering, and sometimes jagged cliffs
create a distinctive and beloved landscape
in Northeast Wisconsin, especially here in
Calumet County.
The Ledge is made of rock that was originally deposited as sediment on an ancient salt
water sea floor that existed about 420 million years ago. The present-day cliffs were
formed by millions of years of weathering
and erosion, and enhanced by the actions
of glaciers during the last ice age.
In Wisconsin, the Niagara Escarpment
spans a distance of more than 230 miles
and reaches from Waukesha County to the
Door County Peninsula. It runs through the
counties of Door, Kewaunee, Brown, Manitowoc, Calumet, Fond du Lac, Dodge and
Waukesha. Internationally, the Niagara Escarpment is more than 650 miles long with
hundreds of rare species and natural communities along it.
Calumet County offers many opportunities
to view the Niagara Escarpment. High Cliff
State Park in Sherwood, Calumet County
Park in Stockbridge and Ledge View Nature
Center in Chilton all have visible outcroppings of the Ledge with ample opportunities
to view the landform hands on!

www.travelcalumet.com
The Niagara Escarpment reaches its highest
point at High Cliff State Park. The Wisconsin Department of Tourism has identified
High Cliff State Park and the Niagara Escarpment as one of Wisconsin’s 7 Natural
Wonders. The cliff reaches 896 feet above
sea level and gives panoramic views of Lake
Winnebago and the surrounding counties
on a clear day. The state park also offers
a campground with a disability-friendly
cabin, miles of trails including a horse trail
and a 40-foot observation tower all atop the
Ledge. A marina with a harbor is available
as well as a small swimming area.
Calumet County Park is situated along the
shores of Lake Winnebago with the Niagara
Escarpment nestled behind it. Located at
the site of an old brick-making company
that used rock from the ledge, Calumet
County Park has miles of trails that comb
the Niagara Escarpment as well as a huge
tubing hill that is used in the winter. A harbor is located in the park along with campsites right along the lakeshore!
The Niagara Escarpment isn’t just on the
shores of Lake Winnebago; it’s also rooted
in central Calumet County, specifically at
Ledge View Nature Center. The nature center offers visitors miles of trails with scenic
outcroppings of the Ledge. If you’ve ever
wondered what the Niagara Escarpment
looks like underground, then check out the
caves at Ledge View Nature Center! The
caves give you a peek at what goes on below the ground.
Driving through Calumet County will also
give you a glimpse of the Niagara Escarpment. The rolling farm fields and hilly roads
along the drive confirm that the Niagara Escarpment is embedded deep in the county.
The Ledge, coupled with Lake Winnebago,
gives breathtaking views of land and water.
Make sure to stop at the State Highway 55

CAVE CRAWLING
Try something new—something
down, and dirty! Go caving!
cool,
You can experience it at Ledge View Nature
Center, south of Chilton. Call (920)849-7094
for tour dates/times and reservations.
Carolyn’s Caverns is a walk-through cave
with the excitement of optional crawl passages. Bring a flashlight to explore the awesome world underground during the twohour tour.
It may be hard to believe, but this cave system was a plugged-up sinkhole when it was
discovered in 1986, filled with many tons of
sand and gravel from glacial melt waters.
Over the years, volunteers found the cave
and passages by excavating. Even today
the caves continue to be dug out, mostly by
members of the Wisconsin Speleological
Society, Wisconsin’s caving club.
In this natural dolostone cave, you will find
only a few stalactites and flowstone, thanks
to the abrading action of the glacial melt
water. But the adventure of discovery is
around every corner, as the naturalist in-
vites the kids, and the kids at heart, to explore passages, learn about Wisconsin’s geology, or enjoy the musical acoustics under
a sparkling ceiling.
With a depth of almost four stories, Dave’s
Sink is the deepest point in Carolyn’s Caverns. The bowl-shaped ceiling shows the
effect of swirling water pouring from a glacial-era underground waterfall. The cave
had its origins back before the last glacial
maximum, more than 18,000 years ago.
Accessed via two stairs, a ladder, and
through a metal door, the cave varies in
temperature, from 32°F in winter, when it’s
closed to protect hibernating bats, to the
high 50°F in July. Though a sleeping bat
may be seen on spring and fall tours, summer wildlife in the cave is scarce.
Mothers Cave is for the most adventurous! It
involves plenty of belly crawling, with a ceiling height from 11 inches to a whopping 24
inches. This keeps a visitor down and dirty
until the exit, a wiggle through the challenging “Squeeze”. A little bit of rock climbing
then brings the green world of the forest into
view.
A cave tour is offered most weekends May
through November, and many weekdays in
summer. It’s a cool place to be on a hot day!
A guest chef will be cooking a meal at Meuer Farm, which will include
ingredients from the farm. After dinner, enjoy a fun, farm activity.

Sunday, October 2
The barn quilt, typically an 8 foot by 8 foot
representation of a quilt square painted on
plywood and hung on a barn, has made its
way to the rural landscape of Calumet County. These pieces of art cause us to pause, take
notice of the surrounding beauty and reflect
on the cultural contribution that agriculture
has made to the area. We invite you to drive
our rural roads and visit our barn quilts.
These quilts were done through the Calumet
County Barn Quilt Program, which utilizes
community volunteers and donors. The program is young and growing so we hope you
come back again year after year to see the
changes. Go to www.travelcalumet.com for
a current list of locations. The locations of
the installed barn quilts are on the Calumet
County Map on pages 16-17.

New Holstein, founded in May of 1848, is typical of mid-western rural prairie
communities formed around the railroad freight and passenger stations.
Pioneer Corner Museum
2103 Main Street
The Timm House
1600 Wisconsin Avenue
The Timm House, built in 1873, is one of the
Midwest’s finest remaining “Stick-style” Victorian
Homes. As the recipient of a 1.2 million dollar
refurbishment project completed in 2007, the
Timm House is a resplendent example of
Victorian Era living in a rural Wisconsin
community. The home is open for tours from the
first weekend in May through the last weekend in
October, on Saturdays and Sundays, from 1:00 to
4:00pm. Tours, by appointment, are also
available by calling (920) 898-5746. Special
hours are offered during the month of December
for a yearly themed “Christmas at the Timm
House”. An admission fee is charged.
The Pioneer Corner Museum, located in a building
which served as one of New Holstein’s early
General Stores, houses an extensive collection of
artifacts, displays, and vignettes focused on the
community’s history. A glimpse at late 1800’s
New Holstein may be found in the museum’s Main
Gallery which contains vignettes of period city
businesses as well as a one-room school house.
The South Gallery features, among other exhibits,
the Fenn Button Collection, one of North America’s
finest historical button collections. A variety of
historical tools and equipment are on display in
the North Gallery as is a diorama of late 1800’s
New Holstein. Pioneer Corner Museum, like the
Timm House is open seasonally on Saturdays
and Sundays, from 1:00 to 4:00pm, beginning on
the first weekend in May and running through the
last weekend in October. Special tours are also
available by calling (920) 898-5746. An admission
fee is charged.
