Soak in the Silver!
They say every cloud has a silver lining. So
does every year, and winter is just that—the
silver lining of 2014! Soak up the winter sun
and soak in the enjoyment of the season.
Get outdoors and inhale the intoxicating
crisp air of winter by living the following
adventures:
Jack Frost loves Calumet County!
Every winter he leaves his mark by frosting hillsides with crystal
and freezing the lakes until they shimmer a metallic hue.
From the silver jingle bells to the ice shaving blades of children’s
skates, you’ll agree winter’s true color is definitely silver!

Go Snowmobiling
131 miles of snowmobile trails zip through
fields and meander through forests. The
view depends on the route you choose.
There are several trail accesses in the county, with the most popular being at Calumet
County Park, north of Stockbridge. For trail
conditions call the Parks Activity Line at
(920) 849-1494.
Strap on some traditional wood snowshoes
and float across the snow. Any park or state
wildlife area is ideal. If new to the sport try
an organized hike at Ledge View Nature
Center south of Chilton. They have shoes
available and give lessons before every
scheduled hike. If you happen to be on the
northern end of the county, the Brillion Nature Center is another place to try your luck.
Impress your Valentine with something romantic and enjoy the Moonlight Snowshoe
Hike scheduled for Saturday, February 8,
2014 at 6:30 p.m.
Go Tubing
Enjoy an exhilarating flight down a big hill
and a relaxing ride up a tow rope. Check

Bird Watching
Bird watching is a very popular year-round
activity, but winter brings a whole new
perspective. It is so much easier to show
children birds when they are landscaped
against the snow.
The Killsnake Wildlife Area east of Chilton,
and south of Potter, has the most winter
bird activity in Calumet County. Since the
wildlife area has several fields typical of
a prairie, it attracts many birds during the
winter. This area is the best place to find
Rough-legged Hawks and Short-eared
Owls. The hawks usually fly on sunny days
and the Short-eared Owls usually fly from 15
minutes before sunset until dusk. The best
place to park to see the birds is somewhere
between the Lemke/Aebischer Road junction and the Killsnake Bridge. You are able
to stay inside your car and watch the low-flying owls over the fields. Another good place
to find winter birds is located on the north
edge of the Wildlife Area on Stecker Road.
Ski or hike the torch-lit Forest Management Trail at High Cliff State
Park! Bring your own skis.

Grasslands, which the birds love to fly over,
surround the area.
Look for the Short-eared Owls and winter
raptors at the Brillion Wildlife Area south of
Brillion. Park at the Brillion Nature Center
and hike the state wildlife grounds until you
find the owls or raptors.
Try Ice Fishing
You’ve seen it in the movies and you’ve
heard the fish tales, now its time to try it
yourself. Load the lures, and drill the holes
in the ice. Fish the deep silver lake for perch
and walleye, the shore area for lawyers (the
fish!).
Be a legend and dare to gamble against the
sturgeon. Sturgeon spearing is a historical
tradition which brings thousands to Lake
Winnebago every winter in hopes of tricking
one of the prehistoric monsters to cross the
path of your spear. Try it yourself or come to
watch the fishing frenzy. The season is early
February and can be quite short, depending
on the number of sturgeon speared.
Not quite so adventuresome but still want to

Indulge your senses
in the color green!
Experience Spring in Calumet County! A visit in March, April or May allows one to watch
as the season wakes up from its snowy
slumber. Spring offers the opportune time
to hike the greening woods and grasslands
that offer glimpses of rare birds and plants
too shy to make their appearance wearing a
winter wardrobe of snow.
The vast state wildlife areas offer the indulgence of the harmonious choirs sung by the
finest frogs. Native grasses and open fields
invite sandhill cranes and osprey to nest
amongst emerald landscapes.
Environmental pleasures are at their finest peak during this green season. Maple
syrup runs carelessly waiting to be savored
by children over pancakes and ice cream,
fish frolic freely teasing fishermen who’ve
dreamt of the thawing ice, and canoeists
race to the rivers to migrate through towering shrouds of foliage.
Where to indulge in
the color green :
Brillion Wildlife Area
& Nature Center
Prepare your ears and eyes for a treat! This
expansive natural playground is a 5000 acre
state wildlife area with 6.5 miles of hiking
trails and a secluded nature center. A boardwalk trail leads to a large viewing platform
that extends out into the marsh. From the
platform view nesting osprey, sandhill
cranes, herons, and ducks. Chorus frogs
monopolize the reed canary grass. Early in
spring, as the woods bathe themselves in
the sunshine, the tree frogs serenade anyone eager to be romanced by their unique
ballad.

High Cliff State Park
Dickcissels flit merrily across the fields of
this majestic park. The park boasts high
cliffs, panoramic views of Lake Winnebago,
8.5 miles of wooded hiking, biking and
equestrian trails that meander through the
fields of the top “ridge” of the park.
High Cliff is a great place to look for warblers, especially when the lake flies are
most prevalent. The warblers have made
High Cliff their abode, as it is home to the
county’s largest warbler population. In
the upper forest, high above the water,
smaller birds such as Yellow-breasted Chat,
Connecticut Warbler, Prairie Warbler and
Black-throated Blues find shelter high in the
trees. Grass-nesting birds, such as Upland
Sandpipers, Dickcissels, Grasshopper and
Henslow’s Sparrows, Western Meadowlarks,
and Bobolinks are found in the park as
well. Occasionally, the Lesser Scaup and
Snow Buntings are seen on the shoreline.
Wherever you go in the park, there is sure to
be a feathered friend flying around nearby.
The park includes a campground, museum,
historic sites and effigy mounds, 40-foot
observation tower, and educational opportunities. Enjoy butterfly hikes, frog walks,
old time encampments, and many other
family activities. Located near the Village
of Sherwood. Park stickers are required to
enter the park. For more information about
the park and a list of activities visit: www.

Ledge View Nature Center

ridge lines and meander swiftly back to the
main attraction: the caves!

the upper level of the park. To complete your
day, climb the observation tower and take in
the view only birds, and climbers like you,

From the sunlit sparkle of the state’s largest inland lake to our blue
ribbon artisan products, you’re sure to enjoy summer in Calumet!
The warm months of the year are buzzing with activity and exciting
places to visit. Enjoy the tranquility of the lakes, the intrigue of our
galleries, fantastic gospel music, and the excitement of our sensational
summer happenings. Reserve some time in June, July and August to
experience blue. After all, summer’s blue can make an all new you!
How To Be A New Blue
Enjoy a Lakeside Picnic
Whether on top a limestone bluff watching
the sailboats drift by on Lake Winnebago,
or tucked away on the secluded lakeshore
of Becker Lake, taking time with family or
friends to enjoy a lakeside picnic is a summer
must do. Pack your basket and enjoy the blue
view from these summer spots:
Becker Lake is a small lake on the east side
of the county, east of the Village of Potter and
south of the City of Brillion. The southwest
shore of the lake is part of Becker Lake County
Park. There is no playground equipment or
concession stands, just a few remote trails,
prairie and some secluded lakeshore. This
park is considered a local gem, perfect for
nature lovers and hopeless romantics!
High Cliff State Park is a multi-level state
park offering panoramic views of Lake
Winnebago from the top of limestone cliffs.
The park is located at the northwest corner
of the county, in the Village of Sherwood.
Enjoy wooded trails which lead to ideal
resting spots complete with picture perfect
views. If you’re fortunate you’ll also discover

Calumet County Park is a perfect spot for
families with children who want to enjoy a
lakeside picnic. Let the children play and
explore, and then stay for the night in a shore
side campsite. The park is north of the Village
of Stockbridge along Lake Winnebago. This
200 acre park spans 1 mile of lakeshore and
offers 5 miles of hiking trails. To complete the
family picnic, fish from the marina or bring
your boat and cast away in front of your
campsite!

Bat Cave Sink is a walk-in cave and is accessed
by stairs and then a walk-in door. People tend
to love starting their cave exploration here in
that it is less intimidating than some of the
other caves (and because the guide has very
entertaining stories about the cave!). Like the
other caves, this cave began as a sinkhole.
Many tons of mud and loose rock poured
through the cave with glacial melt waters.
Over a period of years volunteers excavated
the debris and found the cave.
In this Niagara Dolomite cave you will find
stalactites and cave drapery, among other
formations. This cave is, as its name indicates,
used by bats for winter hibernation. Also
found in this “live” cave are cave spiders and
cave crickets.
Carolyn’s Caverns is the favorite of many with
its large “Dave’s Sink”. This ever evolving cave
system, accessed through a metal door and

down a ladder, involves many passageways,
and leads to a large room known as “Dave’s
Sink” (formally a sinkhole).
Prior to 1986 the whole cave system known
as Carolyn’s Caverns was also just a sinkhole.
However, in that year members of the
Wisconsin Speleological Society, including
Carolyn Schleis, for whom the cave was
named, dug through a sinkhole and broke
into the cave. Much of the first and second
rooms were plugged up with rocks and mud,
until members of the Wisconsin Conservation
Corps dug them out. Even today the caves
continue to be dug out and expanded by
volunteers.
The depth of the cave is over 35 feet, with
an overall passageway in excess of 300 feet.
Cave formations include cave coral, cave
drapery, stalactites, drip cups, columns, and
flowstone. Carolyn’s Caverns are formed out
of Niagara Dolomite.
Montgomery Cave has been visited since the
1860’s. This popular cave has a vertical depth
of about 30 feet and a total linear passageway
over 225 feet. The cave has at least three
rooms. Unique features in the rooms include
circular chimneys, calcite crystal formations,
and many side passageways. The cave

temperature is approximately 46 degrees.
Wildlife in the cave is scarce, except for a few
cave crickets, and in winter months, a small
colony of hibernating little brown bats. It is
believed this cave had its origins before the
last glacial melting, about 10,000 years ago.
The cave is a “solution” cave and was formed
in a limestone named Niagara Dolomite.
Mother’s Cave is for the most adventurous
spelunker! It involves plenty of belly crawling
fun passageways. The passageways span a
linear distance over 300 feet. The first part of
the cave involves climbing down a seven foot
vertical drop in the limestone and then lying
down and crawling through a passageway
known as “The Squeeze,” a narrow tunnel.
The ceiling height of the first room is only
two and a half feet!

An ascending 20 foot channel leads to a
second room, which is approximately 45 feet
long and 20 feet wide, with a whopping three
foot ceiling height. Cave features include a
large stalactite, beautiful flowstone, dome
pit, and fossils.
The cave was discovered on Mother’s Day
1986 by Wisconsin Speleogical Society
member, Norb Kox.

“Orange you” glad
you visited?
Mother Nature’s palette comes to
life in fall in Calumet County!
Fiery oranges, rich reds and vibrant
shades of gold spackle the landscape
and hover boldly over the cliffs.
Fall is the perfect time to stroll
the crisp trails, meander the golden
prairies of the wildlife areas, and
enjoy sensations that will linger in
your memory through the solitary
months of winter that loom ahead.
From the orange cheeseheads of the
Cheesehead Run to the old orange engines
of the R.S Vintage Steel, Steam & Gas Engine
Show you’ll be glad you came for a visit this
fall! In addition to the fall happenings, take
in a little nature and a lot of orange by enjoying the following:
Stroll the Orange Carpet
The best places to experience the fall colors are right in the middle of the colors
themselves! Enjoy a colorful feast for your
senses by going for a walk at Ledge View
Nature Center south of Chilton, the Brillion
Nature Center south of Brillion or High Cliff
State Park in Sherwood. All trails meander
through field and forest and offer relaxing
but spectacular views of the world.
Savor the Orange
Enjoy the season’s best harvest by bringing
the family for some old fashioned fun. Pick
the prize pumpkin from a friendly roadside
stand, enjoy the animals and activities at
Mulberry Lane Farm east of Sherwood, go
for a hayride through the apple orchards
at Heritage Orchard south of Stockbridge,
or, for the adults, try a harvest brew made
with local malt at the classic Rowland’s Calumet Brewing Co. Inc. in Chilton. If you’ve
never “legally” thrown a pumpkin before,
try pumpkin bowling at Crafty Apple Fest
in Chilton. Or if the thought of being dazed
and confused is up your alley, try the corn
maze at Meuer’s Farm in Brothertown or
Polly’s Pumpkin Patch in Chilton.
Sleep in the Orange
For the brave: Camp the chilly nights at
Calumet County Park north of Stockbridge
or High Cliff State Park in Sherwood.
For the adventurous: Visit the farm and stay
overnight at Meyer’s Farm House near New
Holstein.
