Dear Friend,
WHY IT MAKES
MORE SENSE THAN
EVER TO SWITCH
TO A LOCAL BANK.
Frustration.
You’ve experienced it time and time again,
especially if you’re a customer of one of
those big, out-of-town banks obsessed with
taking over the world. The more times they
acquire other banks, the more problems
they create and the more times you – the
customer – get lost in the shuffle. If we’ve
learned anything in today’s economic
environment, we’ve learned that it’s not
about getting bigger – what really matters,
is getting it right.
Local Banks Get It Right.
Banking locally isn’t just a ‘good feeling’. Today it makes practical economic
sense – one that can significantly impact the local economy and your financial well being, as well. Because when you bank locally your money goes to
work locally. This means you’re not only helping your friends and neighbors,
local businesses and your community, but you end up helping yourself. At
Hampden Bank we describe this as our “Circle of Prosperity”, where deposits
made here go to work here for the benefit of all.
Local Banks Deliver.
Thanks to technology your local community bank offers you everything
the big banks can in the way of products, services and overall convenience.
All without making you feel like a very small frog in a very, very large pond.
Local Banks Live Here.
Because our headquarters are local and not in some far off place we have the
ability to make decisions quicker, respond faster and apply our local knowledge
for the benefit of all our customers. And if problems arise, it’s comforting to
know our key decision makers are accessible, available and nearby.
Experience local banking at its best – switch to
Hampden Bank.
You know you’re ready. You know it’s time. Which is why I’m inviting you stop
by any of our offices today. We’ll welcome you with opened arms, make the
switch easy, and brighten your day along the way.

We are delighted to present our 2011-2012 PIONEER VALLEY LOCAL
FIRST Business Guide. Inside you will discover more than 235 local and
independently owned businesses throughout our region. The Guide is
designed to make it easy for you to locate our member businesses, each
of whom contributes to the unique economic vitality and character of our
community. They represent a diverse range of businesses, family farms,
and non-profits from the Connecticut border to Vermont.
We hope this convenient tool will encourage you to “Think Local First!”
and support the hundreds of locally owned independent businesses
that provide quality products and responsive customer service. Pioneer
Valley Local First has a commitment to the long-term economic, social,
and environmental health of our region. Each purchase you make from
PVLF members helps to keep our Pioneer Valley vibrant and economically
sustainable.
In this guide we have emphasized the importance of our many local banks
and credit unions. The shift to banking locally, combined with a shift in
spending to locally owned, independent businesses, is a powerful force
that will re-shape our local economic landscape.
We hope you carry this guide with you and discover hundreds of local
businesses and farms in the Pioneer Valley from Springfield to Greenfield
and many cities and towns in between.
We are expanding our work to include educational workshops on Search
Engine Optimization, Social Marketing, Sustainable Business Practices,
Energy Efficiency, and Promotion of local food and farming.
In August 2010, we hired a part-time Executive Assistant, Jennica PetrikHuff. Jennica brings experience both as an entrepreneur and in the nonprofit sector. The work of Pioneer Valley Local First is greatly expanded
with the addition of paid staff. Jennica can be reached at jennica@
pvlocalfirst.org. If you are interested in volunteering for PVLF, please
contact Jennica or come to our monthly meetings.
If you are a locally owned, independent business or organization, we
encourage you to join PVLF. Just go to our website, www.pvlocalfirst.org.
Sincerely,
The Pioneer Valley Local First Executive Committee:

Our Mission Pioneer Valley Local First is a network
of locally owned, independent businesses in Western
Massachusetts working to create a vibrant community
and a strong local, living economy. We do this by:
Organizing the Pioneer Valley Think Local First campaign, which
informs and educates people, businesses, non-profits, and state
and municipal governments about the benefits of purchasing from
locally owned, independent businesses.
In addition, to encouraging people and businesses to Think Local
First, we encourage businesses to be socially, locally, and environmentally responsible.

Top Ten Reasons
to Shop Local First
1) Significantly More Money Re-circulates In Western Massachusetts.
When you purchase at locally owned businesses rather than nationally
owned ones, more money remains in the community because locally
owned businesses often purchase from other local businesses, service
providers, and farms. Buying local helps grow other businesses as well as
our region’s tax base.
2) Non-Profits Receive Greater Support. Non-Profits often receive greater
support from local business owners—sometimes as much as 350% more
money—than they do from non-locally owned businesses.
3) Unique Businesses Are An Integral Part Of Our Distinctive Character.
The unique character of the Pioneer Valley is what kept or brought many
us here and it will keep us here. Our tourism businesses also benefit,
because our place doesn’t look every place. According to Richard Moe,
President, National Historic Preservation Trust, “When people go on
vacation they generally seek out destinations that offer them the sense of
being someplace, not just anyplace.”
4) Environmental Impact Is Reduced. Local businesses make more local
purchases that require less transportation. They usually set up shop in
town centers rather than on the fringes. This generally means contributing
less to sprawl, congestion, habitat loss, resource depletion, and pollution.
5) Most New Jobs Are Provided By Local Businesses. Small local
businesses are the largest employers nationally.
6) Customer Service Is Often Better. Local businesses often hire people
with more specific product expertise, and they invest in their employees
for better customer service.
7) Local Business Owners Invest In Our Community. Local businesses are
owned by people who: live in this community; are less likely to leave; and
are more invested in the community’s future.
8) Put Your Taxes To Good Use. Local businesses in city and town centers
require comparatively little infrastructure investments, add more to our tax
base, and make more efficient use of public services.
9) Competition And Diversity Lead To More Consumer Choices. A
marketplace of thousands of small businesses is the best way to ensure
innovation and low prices over the long-term.
10) Welcome In More Entrepreneurs And Skilled Workers. A growing
body of economic research shows that in an increasingly homogenized
world, entrepreneurs and skilled workers are more likely to invest and
settle in communities that preserve their one-of-a-kind businesses and
distinctive character.

Make the Shift, Bank Locally!
We are very lucky to have so many local and community
banks and credit unions here in Western Massachusetts
to do business with. Unlike some other banks, these local banking institutions are very responsibly run and
do a wonderful job taking care of our community here in
the three counties of the Pioneer Valley.
As you can see from the chart below, the small banks in America have
11% of total bank assets and provide more lending to small businesses
than any other type of bank in the country. If you are an owner or manager
of a locally owned business and are not yet banking locally we highly
recommend it. Small community banks and credit unions truly have
your back.
Top 5 Reasons to Choose a
Community Bank or Credit Union:
1. Get the Same Services at Lower Cost
Most locally owned banks and credit unions offer the same array of services, from
online bill paying to debit and credit cards, at much lower cost than big banks.
Average fees at small banks and credit unions are substantially lower than at big
banks, according to national data.
2. Put Your Money to Work Growing Your Local Economy
Small businesses, which create the majority of new jobs, depend heavily on
small, local banks for financing. Although small and mid-sized banks control less
than one-quarter of all bank assets, they account for more than half of all small
business lending. Big banks, meanwhile, allocate relatively little of their resources
to small businesses.
3. Keep Decision-Making Local
At local banks and credit unions, loan approvals and other key decisions are made
locally by people who live in the community, have face-to-face relationships with
their customers, and understand local needs.
4. Back Institutions that Share a Commitment to Your Community
The fortunes of local banks and credit unions are intimately tied to the fortunes of
their local communities. The more the community prospers, the more the local bank
benefits. This is why many local banks and credit unions are involved in their communities. Big banks, in contrast, are not tethered to the places where they operate.
5. Support Productive Investment, Not Gambling
This graph was provided by the New Rules Project’s Community Banking Initiative.
Learn more at www.newrules.org/banking
If you already get your food locally and shop locally and are not yet
banking locally, this is truly one of the next best things you can do with
your money.
The shift to banking locally, combined with a shift in spending to locally
owned, independent businesses, is a powerful force that will re-shape
our local economic landscape. By shifting money to local banks,
opportunities are created for our local financial institutions to invest our
deposits through loans to increase local business capacity, which in turn
allows local businesses and their employees to increase deposits and
savings through their success. This virtuous cycle is a key driver for
creating jobs and enduring well-being for all members of society.
The primary activity of almost all small banks and credit unions is to turn deposits
into loans and other productive investments. Meanwhile, big banks devote a sizeable share of their resources to speculative trading and other Wall Street bets that
may generate big profits for the bank, but provide little economic or social value
for the rest of us and can put the entire financial system at risk if they go bad.
According to the FDIC website, the total for bank deposits for Hampden,
Hampshire and Franklin counties that make up the Pioneer Valley is:
$11,958,992,000 or nearly $12 Billion (not including credit unions) Total
bank deposits held at local & community banks: $5,771,972,000 or 48%.
Total bank deposits held at non-local banks: $5,800,313,000 or 48.5%.
Our Goal
Pioneer Valley Local First is working to encourage people, businesses and
other institutions to shift their bank deposits away from non-local banks to
local and community banks and credit unions. If just 10% of the deposits
were moved away from non-local banks this would equal over half a billion
more dollars in the hands of financial institutions owned and located right
here in our community.

These companies bank on us. Shouldn’t we bank with them?
Get to know your local financial institutions and find the
resources you need to make the shift to a community
bank or credit union. No matter where you live in the
Pioneer Valley, there is a local, community bank or credit
union there to serve you. Lower fees, better
service and a stronger local economy await you.
Welcome to Florence Savings Bank, founded in 1873. Our commitment to
sound banking, combined with our promise to provide the best service
available, has made us one of the fastest growing banks in our area.
Florence Savings Bank remains committed to serving the community as a
local bank. The bank is depositor owned and its Directors and Corporators
are all actively involved in the local community.
The past 141 years have seen profound transformation and advancement in
the banking industry. But Greenfield Savings Bank’s long standing commitment to provide superior customer service, offer solid financial products, and
work diligently to enhance the communities we serve has remained steady
and reliable. We simply wouldn’t be Greenfield Savings Bank without you,
our community. With our legacy of community giving—we proudly invest in
the region that invests in us. Seeing our neighbors thrive inspires us to work
harder, grow stronger, and continue to make a difference.
A century and a half ago, almost every town had at least one bank they could
call their own. These institutions were the financial heart of the community,
fueling its growth during the good times and feeling its pain during the
downturns. Our roots in Western Massachusetts are strong and deep. We
are a federally protected bricks & mortar bank, with ten Full Service Offices
and an extensive ATM network. For 160 years deposits made here, go to
work here.

At Monson Savings, we intend to be your bank forever by providing all the
products and services you need for your financial well being; whether you
are an individual or business; from checking, savings and loans to financial
advisory services. We are here to help families save, businesses prosper
and communities benefit.
PeoplesBank, the largest community bank in the area, is a leader in green
values, sustainable-energy financing, and charitable giving. Founded in
1885, the bank takes its responsibility to the environment seriously and has
financed more than $40 million in wind, hydroelectric, and solar energy
projects. Recently, the Boston Business Journal recognized PeoplesBank
as a top corporate charitable contributor in Massachusetts and ranked its
employees as number two in the state for volunteer hours contributed.
PeoplesBank—a passion for what is possible.
If there is one thing that we at Pioneer Valley Local
First have tried to make abundantly clear, it’s that
what you do with your money matters for you and your
community. Going local with your spending and your
banking causes a “multiplier effect” that keeps more
money re-circulating in our community. A small shift
in spending by everyone creates a huge amount of
benefit that we can and should take to our local and
community banks and credit unions.
Make the Shift,
Bank Locally!!

Market to Market
Community = Involvement = Sustaining Local Agriculture
Local farms are the foundation of our community. They
provide us with fresh, healthful food and vital farm
products, from fruits and vegetables, to wood, fiber, and
more. They also contribute to a strong local economy that
in turn supports local jobs, and they help to preserve our
vistas by working our local lands and keeping them open.
Since its founding in 1993, CISA has been at the
forefront of ground-breaking initiatives that support
farmers, create strong markets for farm products, and
build a thriving agricultural economy for all in Western
Massachusetts. Our Be a Local Hero, Buy Locally Grown™
awareness campaign is the longest-running buy local
program in the country and now has more than 300
local farms, restaurants, and agricultural businesses
participating. Its impact has been tremendous; 82% of
residents recognize the Local Hero logo, and are twice
as likely to shop at their local farm stand or farmers’
market or to choose local products at their grocery store,
while 61% of participating farms said the program has
increased their product sales. CISA also works with
partners to ensure that locally grown food is available to
more residents of our region in more of the places that
they live, work, learn, shop, and eat.
The chart below shows that if people in western
Michigan shopped just 10% more often at local
businesses that it would keep an extra 53 million dollars in their community and create over 1,600 new jobs. What would be the effect
if we did the same here?
Each of us can contribute to the
viability of local farms. Purchase
products from farms in your area
by looking for the Local Hero
logo, become a CISA community
member, and spread the word about
the importance of supporting local
agriculture. Become a part of the Community Involved in
Sustaining Agriculture and visit www.buylocalfood.org .
The next step is up to you!

Buy Local, Buy Fair
While there are several hundred Fair Trade Towns in
Europe, there are only twenty-one here in the United
States. Of the twenty-one town Fair Trade Towns, four
of them: Amherst, Northampton, and Conway MA and
Brattleboro, VT are right in our backyard and Greenfield
or Easthampton maybe one of the next.
In 2007 Pioneer Valley Local First joined the Northampton Fair Trade Coalition and played a key role in helping
Northampton become the 6TH Fair Trade Town in the
country. Now we are helping to create and partner with
the Pioneer Valley Fair Trade Committee to promote the
important message and mission of Fair Trade in the three
counties of the Pioneer Valley. If you would like to help in
our efforts, please be in touch.
People in Fair Trade Towns use their everyday choices to
support Fair Trade by offering and purchasing products,
like chocolate, coffee, tea, bananas, etc…which make a
positive, sustainable change in the lives of farmers in
developing countries. Fair, direct and transparent trade
practices make it possible for farmers to thrive instead
of just merely survive, which is all too often the case.
Around Western Massachusetts we are calling our
campaign “Buy Local, Buy Fair.” The idea of Buy Local,
Buy Fair is to encourage people to buy Fair Trade
products at locally owned businesses; this way we can
take care of the world and ourselves at the same time
and we go in a direction where everyone benefits.
When shopping at locally owned, independent
businesses, please look for the Fair Trade CertifiedTM
label and support Fair Trade for communities here and
abroad. Thank You!
When you see this label you can be
confident that you are getting products
that are safer for you, your family and
our planet and better for small farmers
the world over.
To learn more about Fair Trade, please go to:
www.fairtradetownsusa.org and www.transfairusa.org

Pioneer Valley Local First
Fair Trade principles include:
Fair prices: Democratically organized farmer groups receive a
guaranteed price. Fair labor conditions: Workers enjoy freedom of association,
safe working conditions, and living wages. Forced child labor is strictly
prohibited.
Direct trade: Importers purchase from producer groups as directly
as possible, eliminating unnecessary middlemen and empowering farmers.
Community development: Fair Trade farmers and farm
workers invest their earnings in social and business development projects
like health care, new schools, quality improvement trainings, and organic
certification.
Environmental sustainability: The Fair Trade certification system strictly prohibits the use of genetically modified organisms
(GMOs), promotes systems that improve soil fertility, and limits the use
of harmful agrochemicals in favor of environmentally sustainable farming
methods that protect farmers’ health and preserve valuable ecosystems
for future generations.

Local Sustainability
At the root of the movement for a more just and
sustainable way of life is a new way of thinking
about the world. It’s not just about buying lots
of cool green stuff. It’s about re-thinking how we
live on the planet. We have learned…
• The earth is finite and that what we take from the earth
is not for free.
• Nothing can really be thrown away. The idea of “waste”
is a misconception.
• Human activity can degrade or regenerate the planet.
What we do matters.
• Concentrating wealth in the hands of a few and
impoverishing others is unjust and not sustainable.
• Buying stuff and accumulating wealth doesn’t alone
make us happy or healthy. Living in balance with nature
and living in community with others does.
Our local, living economy is a complex set of relationships
that exist to provide people with meaningful work and
with the products and services they need for a fulfilling
life. Here in the Pioneer Valley, there are many people,
businesses, non-profits, government entities and
cooperatives focused on building vibrant, just,
sustainable, local economies.
Pioneer Valley Local First works to encourage people
to think local first so that they buy and bank local first.
They also work to encourage companies in a friendly way
to be socially, locally and environmentally responsible by
helping companies create their own action plans to become more sustainable. The Pioneer Valley Sustainability
Network (www.pvsustain.org) is a business network
creating a just and sustainable future in our region by
fostering dialogue and collaboration between network
members. The organizations and businesses in these
networks are living a commitment to sustainability and
justice in lots of ways.
REDUCE
• Reducing their energy and fuel use and traveling less
• Finding ways to use fewer of the earth’ s resources
• Finding creative ways to use materials more efficiently
in their operations
• Using organic and natural products and practices in
their operations
The Northampton Brewery shaved $32,000 off their
electric bill in the first nine months after their Deep
Energy Retrofit with Beyond Green Construction.
REUSE
• Reusing, recycling and composting what they have to “
throw away”
• Generating little to no waste in their operations
23 Big Y stores in Massachusetts diverted 2,200 tons
of produce, unsold prepared foods, deli meat ends,
cheese block ends and floral waste from landfills to two
farms for composting and a zoo for animal food in 2010
saving $35 to $40 per ton with support from the Center
for EcoTechnology (CET) in Northampton. CET also
operates EcoBuilding Bargains in Springfield selling
ecofriendly used and surplus building materials at
bargain prices along with deconstruction services which
keep valuable building materials out of landfills.

RESTORE
BE FAIR
• Restoring dignity and respect to people who have been
marginalized in our economy
• Treating their workers well
• Protecting natural resources
• Restoring vitality to natural environments
Conway School of Landscape Design explores, develops,
practices, and teaches design of the land that is
ecologically and socially sustainable. Graduate students
do design projects for the community as part of their
studies. For one project, they reduced erosion and
screened the parking area in a popular fishing area on
the Quabbin Reservoir by allowing native plants to
revegetate the sandy shore; construction details included
the design of a universally accessible fishing pier. In
another, they redesigned an inner-city schoolyard in
Holyoke, MA, providing more shade, greenspace, and
learning ground for the children.
BE GREEN
• Using renewable energy
• Using products that don’t harm the environment
Solidago Foundation, a foundation supporting sustainability and justice initiatives in limited resource communities
around the world, worked with design firm Coldham and
Hartman to upgrade the energy efficiency of their offices
and hired worker-owned cooperative PV Squared to install
a solar electric system on the roof of Thornes Market.
Berkshire East recently put up a wind generator that will
produce over 100% of their energy needs and Urban
Power USA is a new local company producing low cost
wind turbines in Easthampton.
BE LOCAL
• Buying from other local companies, farmers, and
individuals who sell things that were created with respect for the planet.
Our Family Farms is a partnership of local farmers,
processors, distributers, retailers and consumers bringing
high quality local milk to local supermarkets.

Pioneer Valley Local First
• Buying from other local companies or locally-owned
companies in other regions who treat their workers well.
Consumer Owned Food Co-ops - Green Fields Market,
McCuskers Market, River Valley Market and The Old
Creamery Co-op are consumer owned food cooperatives
in the area that treat workers well and bring consumers
quality local food, health and beauty products from
local producers.
EDUCATE
• Helping people understand how to live more gently on
the planet and build more vibrant local communities.
CISA (Community Involved in Sustaining Agriculture) is
an education and advocacy non-profit bringing together
farmers, families, restaurants and grocery stores to keep
local agriculture strong in western Massachusetts. Their
Local Hero campaign is the longest running “buy local”
program in the country and is a smashing success.
ACTIVATE
• Helping people and communities transition to a more
sustainable and just future in our region.
Co-op Power is a consumer-owned energy cooperative
providing affordable energy products and services for
homes and businesses and resources to help communities
transition to a just and sustainable energy future. Co-op
Power members have built Energy Efficiency Services,
Solar Hot Water System Installation Services, Northeast
Biodiesel (a recycled vegetable oil biodiesel plant in
Greenfield) and Energía (an energy services company
in Holyoke) to provide quality jobs in marginalized
communities and access to affordable, sustainable energy
products and services.

Business Alliance for Local
Living Economies
Pioneer Valley Local First is part of a larger, growing
movement of locally owned, independent businesses
that are working to create vibrant communities and
strong local economies. We are a member of the
Business Alliance for Local Living Economies (BALLE),
which was founded in 2001 and has since grown to
include more than 80 Local First networks throughout
the United States and Canada.
BALLE brings local business leaders together to share
ideas and learn how to more effectively strengthen local
economies and preserve and protect the health and well
being of local communities and the environment. We
encourage you as business owners and citizens alike to
attend the annual International BALLE conference held
each spring and to learn from other local business
owners from across the country. We encourage you to
visit the BALLE website at www.livingeconomies.org.
To find articles, studies, and other resources that offer
rock-solid evidence supporting the importance of
shopping at locally owned, independent businesses.
