WELCOME tO a GLORiOUS
SUMMER SEaSOn at tHE RCM!
A journey from night into day – Mahler’s remarkable Seventh Symphony is one
of the highlights of our summer performances, and we are delighted to welcome
Bernard Haitink back to the Royal College of Music for two performances of
this work.
A darker side of London will be represented in Hogarth’s Stages – five brand
new chamber operas created by RCM composers in an exciting collaboration with
Tête à Tête opera and the RCM International Opera School. As some lighter
relief, we present Rossini’s La gazzetta – the comic tale written for the opera in
Naples, telling the story of a pompous father hoping to marry off his daughter by
advertising her in the local newspapers. True love, as always, triumphs in the
end, but not before some unlikely suitors are disposed of along the way.
We are pleased to welcome distinguished string players Alina Ibragimova and
Johannes Goritzki for residencies this summer, including not-to-be-missed
performances and masterclasses. Strings are also highlighted in Super String
Sunday – a rapid journey of music from around the globe – and at the Wigmore
Hall in Passione amorosa, which culminates in a performance of Mendelssohn’s
youthful masterpiece, the Octet.
Our musicians also make a welcome return to the Cadogan Hall stage for our
Rising Stars series, which this year includes an American theme, with works by
Reich, Bernstein and Rorem, and a performance of Dvořák’s attractive
Serenade. In addition to our three concerts, we’re also delighted to be taking
part in two masterclasses with legendary violinist Pinchas Zukerman.
New music features in a concert of miniature piano concertos by
Kurtág, Messiaen and Gaudibert given by our New Perspectives
ensemble. We also see multi-genre experimental performances
with Great Exhibitionists and From the Soundhouse – both
melding live performance and electronics for a remarkable
soundworld.
With many uplifting performances including Tchaikovsky’s Fourth
Symphony and Respighi’s exuberant Pines of Rome, chamber
concerts, talks, masterclasses and showcases, there is
something for everyone to enjoy this summer.
We look forward to welcoming you.

The Modern Germans in
Georgian London
RCM Museum of Music
From the early 18th century, London audiences were captivated by
German-speaking musicians and their compositions.
Using contemporary manuscripts, scores, programmes, portraits and
diaries, this exhibition examines the rapturous reception of their romantic
music and its influence on a generation of young English composers,
including John Barnett, William Sterndale Bennett and S S Wesley.
The RCM Museum of Music is open
Tuesday to Friday (11.30am – 4.30pm) and is free to visit.

These two special concerts promise a real treat in the shape of Mahler’s
enigmatic seventh symphony. Opening with a slow funereal introduction, the
work gives way to the serene Nachtmusik (night music) middle movements
and a ghostly scherzo before culminating in a feverishly joyful finale.
Bernard Haitink’s RCM appearances are always extremely popular events,

Donald Maxwell director

Michael Rosewell conductor
Following on from last summer’s hit production of Offenbach’s La vie parisienne, the RCM International
Opera School once again offers up an entertaining and tuneful comic rarity.
Rossini’s La gazzetta or Il matrimonio per concorso (“The Newspaper” or “The Marriage Contest”) centres
on Don Pomponio’s desperate search for a suitable husband for his flirtatious daughter. Is a newspaper
advertisement really the best way to do that? Surely it can only lead to confusion – and to some wonderful
singing, of course…
To direct, we’re absolutely delighted to be working once
again with Donald Maxwell, one of Britain’s best-loved
comic singers, who created our hugely acclaimed
production of Gilbert & Sullivan’s Patience at
the Musée d’Orsay in Paris in 2012.
