(Sekolah Dasar Gawler Timur) MILO T20 Blast Program From the Principal 3rd February 2016 Dear Parents/Caregivers Gawler East Primary Community News Week 1 Calendar Dates Friday, 12th February Family Fun Day beginning at 11.05am Wednesday, 17th February Governing Council Meeting 7pm Welcome back to a very smooth and positive start to the new school year. We hope you had an enjoyable and relaxing extra-long Christmas/New Year holiday period with your families. It was great to see everyone back with smiles and excitement on their faces on the first day. Most students were excited to see friends and meet new teachers. A number of parents I spoke to seemed very happy for their children to be back at school and teachers were looking forward to the challenges of another year of teaching and learning. Our enrolment number for the start of the year is 392 (fifteen classes). ‘Setting Up for Success’ This year all classes are spending the first two weeks implementing our ‘Setting Up for Success’ program. This program focuses on explicitly teaching our school values of Respect, Responsibility, Honesty and Fairness as well as our ‘Play is the Way’ key concepts: Treat others as you would like them to treat you. Pursue your personal best no matter who you work with. Have reasons for the things you say and do. Be Brave – Participate to progress. It takes great strength to be sensible. These values and key concepts underpin our Wellbeing Policy and Procedures. During the first two weeks, teachers will be actively involving students in developing and establishing clear classroom expectations and routines. Family Fun/ Open Day To celebrate the completion of our ‘Setting Up for Success’ fortnight we would like to invite parents and friends to a Family Fun/Open Day on Friday 12th February. Parents and friends are invited to view student work in classrooms from 11.05 am and join classes for a shared picnic lunch from 12.30– 1.30pm. Students will be engaged in a variety of ‘water – tabloid events’ and activities in the afternoon, weather permitting. We have also organised for two castle water- slides to be here on the day for students to access throughout the day. Classes will be rostered on the slides for about 45 minutes each. Students will need to wear their bathers under their school uniform on this day or bring their bathers to get changed into before they go on the slides or participate in the afternoon water games. This day will provide an opportunity for students to practice their ‘getting along’ skills and for parents to meet teachers. Staff Changes There have only been minor changes to our staff for the start of the 2016 school year. We welcome Mr Sam Otta (Room 2) as a new teacher, but even Mr Otta is relatively well known by the students as one of our regular TRT teachers. Mrs Sarah Soroush is acting Senior Leader and Mrs Melanie Leslie is acting School Counsellor. Please refer to the staff list on the next page of this newsletter for rooms and year levels that teachers are teaching. Sun Protection Policy Although the weather has been relatively mild for the start of the school year, it is sure to get hot again soon. It is therefore timely that we remind students and parents that we have a sun safe policy in the school. This means the following: • Clothing – students will be expected to wear school approved broad brimmed hats at all times for outside activities and parents will be encouraged to support this. The school will help by having appropriate hats available at cost price to parents. Shirts/dresses are to have collars and sleeves. • Children will be encouraged to use available areas of shade for outdoor activities. • Children will be encouraged to bring sunscreen of SPF30+ to apply before participating in extended outdoor activities. • Children will be encouraged to wear clothing that protects back, shoulders and necks. • The school community will act as responsible role models by practicing sun safe procedures and wearing protective hats and appropriate clothing for all school outdoor activities. • On days when the temperature reaches 36°C, as measured by Front Office staff at 12:40pm, the students will remain in their class. Three short rings of the siren will indicate hot weather policy implementation. • Recess is excluded from the policy in the event of it being 36°C at 10:40am unless the Principal makes the decision to implement it due to exceptional circumstances.
