To follow are some comments from several children. “We looked at Greek, Hebrew and English Bibles and discovered that the Hebrew Bibles were read from the back” Charlie “Pastor Dan had a Bible with 72 books, ours has 66 books” Curtis “We were Bible Detectives and it was fun looking through magnifying glasses. Mrs Cook’s class came with us.” Claudia To get to know God we need to take the opportunity to regularly spend time reading His word. "My sheep listen to my voice; I know them and they follow me." Success is doing our best with the help of God Primary Years Programme PYP PLANNING WEEK During the week the teachers met in their year levels team to plan and organise the learning curriculum for the students. Each team considers the developmental needs of their students and aims to plan significant, relevant, engaging and challenging learning experiences for their students. Being a PYP school means that we do more than teach to facts, we aim to ‘go beyond the facts and teach students to link information with abstract ideas’. These are the concepts you will see around the classrooms. The eight concepts are Form, Function, Change, Connection, Causation, Perspective, Responsibility and Reflection. We relate the learning which students do to these ideas and use many other related concepts that help them to see not just the facts but the big ideas. Next time you are in the classrooms look for these displayed on the walls and ask your child what big ideas they are learning about. Term 1 Week 1 Page 4 Page 4 Healthy Lifestyles HEALTHY EATING AND BRAIN FUNCTION The importance of good nutrition, healthy eating and physical activity, particularly for children and students, is well recognized. Right Bite plays an important role in providing an encouraging environment for healthy food choices. But does this also contribute to brain function? Research by Dr John Rately, Harvard Clinical Psychiatrist provides compelling evidence linking brain function, exercise and learning. His research provides with Simon Wundersitz evidence that: • Exercise prepares that brain for learning through molecular change, boosting brain function and creating a learning advantage • A high fat, high sugar diet impedes the brain’s ability to uptake its glucose • Obese children generally have a lower IQ than their peers and are at increased risk for disease, hypertension and type 2 diabetes The good N.E.W.S. for healthy brain function involves Nutrition, Exercise, Water and Sleep.
