Triangle Sports Commission
Based in Cary, North Carolina – a hub for amateur sports – the Triangle Sports Commission
(TSC) is dedicated to promoting North Carolina’s Triangle area as a major sports destination,
particularly for Olympic and amateur sports. The TSC favors sports events and activities that
help unify the region and substantiate the Triangle’s frequent high rankings as one of America’s
best places to live. The TSC is a 501(c)(3) charitable North Carolina non-profit corporation
headed by a Board of Directors comprised of local leaders. It is an affiliate of North Carolina
Amateur Sports, one of our country’s oldest sports commissions, which owns and produces the
State Games of North Carolina and Cycle North Carolina.

A Glance at the History of Sports in the Triangle
From the State Games of North Carolina to international championships, the Triangle
hosts a wide variety of events. The U.S. Olympic Festival of 1987 is a prime example of what
the Triangle can offer. It was the “single greatest event in North Carolina history,” as it offered
competition in 34 Olympic and Pan American Games sports across the region. Events were held
at multiple venues including the four major universities in the area: North Carolina Central
University, North Carolina State University, Duke University and the University of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill. With the massive number of venues within a 25-mile radius, the
Triangle has the capacity to host virtually any event.
The Triangle plays host to a variety of championship events, including state high school
championships, ACC and CIAA conference championships, NCAA Championships, and
international competitions. Local universities were integral to the Triangle’s hosting the 1999
Special Olympics World Summer Games. In addition, the success of local sports teams –
including the Stanley Cup Champion Carolina Hurricanes (2006) and NCAA Men’s Basketball
Champions North Carolina State University, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and
Duke University – has solidified the Triangle’s position as high-caliber events host on a routine
basis.
The venues in the Triangle go beyond the facilities at the universities. Home to the
Durham Bulls Athletic Park, the USA Baseball National Training Complex, and WakeMed
Soccer Park, these three Triangle venues host a multitude of events yearly. The Durham Bulls
Athletic Park is home to the Durham Bulls, one of the most recognizable Triple-A baseball teams
in the county. This national recognition translates into the state-of-the-art stadium the Durham
Bulls now call home. The USA Baseball National Training Complex has been host to numerous
baseball tournaments and was the home of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s
Baseball Team during the 2008 season. WakeMed Soccer Park, home to the NASL Carolina
Railhawks, routinely hosts both NCAA and ACC Soccer Tournaments for both men and women.
In addition, WakeMed boasts a top-tier cross-country course, which has hosted such events as
the Great American Cross Country Festival and the NCAA Division II National Championships.
Cary is also the home to the Cary Tennis Park, which has become the destination in recent years
for the ACC Men’s and Women’s Tennis Tournaments.
This rich history reflects the Triangle’s very impressive resume of major events, which is
set out in greater detail in the pages that follow. The Triangle can stage a large-scale
tournament, exhibition game, or championship event for virtually any sport. We hope that the
Triangle’s notable history will demonstrate that it can host the event of your choice.
