Kelli Brown, manager of Pro Cellular
Wireless, contacted Angie Christensen
with an idea she had about painting
their store front at 107 South Egan
Avenue and the idea flourished.
Pictured is what Kelli calls a ‘tribute to
Madison’. With various landmarks in
the city, the “Discover the Unexpected”
logo and Chamber of Commerce members listed on the window, this stunning
picture is sure to slow traffic on
Egan Avenue. Stephanie Miller

“What a wonderful outpouring of support we have enjoyed from all. (It) gives
me a promising glimpse of what the future
holds for our festival and for the area businesses that will benefit from this source of
tourism. For this rock pickin’ farm boy, it’s
great to see the excitement and anticipation people have about the festival,” says
Motongator Joe.
2008 marked the first year for
Motongator Joe’s Country Music Festival
in Madison. With an already successful
country music festival over 12 years old at
his ranch in Michigan, and the great support and following by South Dakotans of
his live touring show, Joe saw not only the
potential, but the need for country entertainment in South Dakota. After visiting a
number of locations that ‘could have
worked’, Joe was introduced to Prairie
Village in Madison.
Joe says, “I just felt it as soon as I
walked on the grounds. It spoke to me and
brought together everything Motongator
Joe’s Country Music Festival stands for:
country living, family, life lessons, music
and camping but especially affordability
for the blue collar, hardworking person.”
After developing a plan and a relationship, Prairie Village and Motongator Joe
were able to lay the foundation for this
annual festival for many years to come.
While last year saw better than anticipated attendance even with less than
desirable weather, (Joe never knew the
wind could blow at 40 mph for hours at a
time without a hurricane present) 2009 is
showing exceptional promise with the
schedule featured lineup.
While carry-ins are allowed, food and
novelty vendors including the Prairie
Village Cook Shack will be available. The
seating is a ‘bring your own lawn chair’
general admission set up and parking is
FREE. Prairie Village will also be operating their steam powered train and carousel
throughout the weekend. Tickets to the
festival are available indefinitely, while
campsites are limited.
“We encourage anybody with questions
or comments to call anytime. We are also
interested in hearing from other local businesses with their ideas or thoughts about
how we can work together to better serve
the community.”
More information can be found at
www.bigtimecountry.com or by calling toll
free 866-245-2702 for tickets.

From the Board. . .
ARE YOU LOOKING FOR A FREE EDUCATION?
When I moved back to the area just over two years ago, I really had a lot to learn.
Although in many areas of my life this hasn’t changed, my knowledge of the process
and effort that it takes to keep a community like Madison moving ahead definitely has.
When I first came back to the area I started attending the Chamber’s Retail
Committee meetings, which is now called Community Promotions. This committee is
active in the planning and executing many events that bring people to our community
like Crazy Days, Day with Santa, and Lake Appreciation Day to name a few. I see this
committee as being a very critical component of our community not only because the
events we put on bring people together; they also help bring consumers and their wallets to Madison. This not only helps the retail community, but also increases our sales
tax revenues and in the end makes life better for all who live here. If you haven’t
guessed yet, this is where the free education comes in. One of the biggest challenges for
the Community Promotions Committee is finding people who are willing to take the
time to participate by attending monthly meetings, helping with the planning and execution of the different events, and most importantly bring fresh ideas and insights to
the table. This is an opportunity that is open to any Chamber Member and speaking on
behalf of the committee, we would love to have you!
I also want to emphasize that I am speaking narrowly about one of the Chamber’s
committee’s. In reality, there are many committees all facing the same challenges and
needing people like you to volunteer your time to help move our community forward. I
know that if you take the time to help you will be rewarded may times over with the
good feelings you get from giving back to your community.
If you would like to help, please contact Julie or Penni at the Chamber office for
more information about the Chamber’s committees and how you can become an active
participant in this great community!
P.S. I have now started my first year on the Chamber Board and I am very excited
about the educational opportunities that this new challenge will bring!

BULLDOGS!
JULIE GROSS,
Note
from the
Director
Executive Director
When Kelli Brown, manager of Pro
Cellular Wireless, first contacted me
about her idea of painting something
about Madison on their store front window, I had no idea it would flourish into
the stunning window it is today. If you
haven’t taken the time to view it, I would
encourage you to stop at 107 South Egan
Avenue and look for yourself.
The window, which depicts various
landmarks in Madison, was painted by
Angie Christensen along with help from
Stephanie Miller and Kelli Brown. It is
an awesome sight which has the DSU
and Bulldog logo, the Elementary, Junior
High and High School buildings, Bike
Trail, Community Center, Aquatic
Center, Baughman Park, Memorial Park
with a flag and the Pledge of Allegiance,
Library, Courthouse, Depot, Dakota
Prairie Playhouse and the DSU
Fieldhouse, to name a few. The 2009
Chamber members are also listed on the
window. Kelli wanted it to be a tribute
to Madison and that’s exactly what it is.
GREAT JOB Pro Cellular Wireless,
and thank you Kelli, for your vision to
portray Madison so it could be shared
with both residents and visitors.
We have been receiving more and
more inquiries at the Chamber about
Madison from people who are planning to
visit this summer to camp, fish or attend
camps. Many of these people tell us they
have never been to Madison before. Put
yourself in their shoes, when you drive
into and around Madison what do you
see? Are lawns neatly mowed and are
store fronts, businesses and awnings
attractive? Most residents in the community are conscientious about their property and if everyone does their part visitors will see and experience Madison for
the great community it is.
At the Chamber we are gearing up for
a summer of fun events. We have chosen
“Pool of Treasures” as the theme for
Crazy Days to support the new Aquatic
Center. If your group or non-profit
organization would like to participate in
Crazy Days on July 24-25 by having a
booth, games for kids or assisting the
Community Promotions Committee,
please contact us. We anticipate Crazy
Days will be two days of fun activities for
everyone. Your input is welcome and we
want to be certain you find a ‘pool of treasures’ in Madison!
Until next month, enjoy your
community and the lakes as you
“Discover the Unexpected.”
WE WELCOME
NEW MEMBERS!

Northern Bull Riding Tour
comes to Prairie Village
LUCE PIONEER DAY
The 3rd annual Northern Bull Riding
Tour is coming to Prairie Village on Friday,
June 12th. The evening will begin with a
Calcutta at 6:30 pm and bull riding at 7:00
pm. Last year, the family fun entertainment drew a standing room only crowd and
with the anticipation of another successful
event, more seating has been made available.
The event is supported by the Madison
Chamber of Commerce Ag Committee and
MADISON, S.D. – Become a part of living history on Saturday, June 13 at Luce
Pioneer Day at Lake Herman State Park
near Madison.
The event, a tradition for many years in
the Madison area, celebrates the original
pioneers who homesteaded in Lake
County with family activities, entertainment and historical demonstrations. It is
named in honor of Herman Luce, one of
the first settlers in the area and builder of
the historic 1872 Luce Cabin, which still
stands in the park.
“It really is amazing to see how people
lived back then,” said Park Manager Vicki
Seger. “and the best part about Pioneer
Day is that there really is something for
everyone. Even if you just go for a stroll
around the park and stop in for a few minutes, you are sure to find something fun
and educational for your whole family.”
Pioneer Day activities begin at 10 a.m.
and run until 5 p.m. Visitors can try butter churning, candle making, apple pressing, toy tin punch making, wash day fun,
weaving, rope making, gold panning,
beading, sun bonnet making, quilting,
plans are underway for committee members to provide intermission entertainment. Following the bull riding, a dance
will be held along with a fundraiser for the

Custom Touch Homes receive hiring incentives
By Danielle Rosheim
Heartland Consumers Power District
(HCPD) is pleased to announce that
Custom Touch Homes of Madison has been
awarded over $4000 in hiring incentives
and electric rebates as part of Heartland’s
Growth Incentive Program. HCPD General
Manager Mike McDowell and Madison
Mayor Gene Hexom visited Custom Touch
Homes recently to present the incentive
check to Scott Larson, co-owner, and Jason
McDonald, Sales Manager.
Also present were Russell Olson,
Heartland Manager of Community &
Economic Development, and Dwaine
Chapel, Executive Director of the Lake
Area Improvement Corporation.
In operation since 1998, Custom Touch
Homes specializes in “off-site” complete
home and commercial building construction. Their facility, located in the Lakeview
Industrial Park, includes 50,000 square
feet for production—enough room for forty
full-time employees to construct an average
of thirteen 1,700 square foot homes simultaneously. According to Larson, a large
staff operating in a controlled environment
helps facilitate a speedy building process.
“Homes take about five or six weeks to
finish,” Larson said. “When they leave
Custom Touch, they have paint, floor coverings and cabinets, and are ready for a basement, garage and infrastructure. Also, 99%
of our homes leave in one piece.”
While Custom Touch has a largely local
customer base, McDonald said that they do
ship to Canada and have found strong markets in Wyoming and Minnesota. He also
expects the business to start exploring
multi-family and two-story dwellings later
this year; they primarily build one-level
homes at this time.
According to Olson, Custom Touch qualified for Heartland’s Growth Incentive
Program with the addition of 14 jobs and
6,000 square feet in 2008.
“We are more than happy to help
Custom Touch with assistance through our
economic development programs,” said
Olson. “To my knowledge, theirs is one of
the only companies in our Customer communities actively hiring right now.”
Heartland Consumers Power District is
a public power utility created in 1969 by
the State of South Dakota. Based in
Madison, Heartland provides low cost, reliable power as well as energy services and
community development programs to communities and state agencies in South
Dakota, Minnesota and Iowa. The Growth
Incentive Program is designed to help stimulate development within Heartland
Customer communities by making cash
available for immediate job growth and
rewarding qualifying companies with a
rebate on the retail electric power bills for
three years.

The LAIC Perspective
During the past two years the LAIC
has been working diligently towards
growth and prosperity. The following
information highlights some of the accomplishments since the inception of Forward
Madison.
There have been three new businesses
move into the Heartland Technology
Center. Secure Banking Solutions, Info
Tech, and Q-Set have a combined 22
employees. 3,500 square feet of the facility are currently under contract for lease.
There have been a number of entrepreneurs assisted during the past two years.
It is important to understand that these
are high risk businesses however, when
successful, they also provide a high yield
of return on investment. The LAIC in
partnership
with
Dakota
State
University created the Center for
Technical Entrepreneurism. Three 3 students were provided assistance in refining their business plan, how to legally
secure and define intellectual collateral,
and how to work through financials
regarding their business. They met with
a representative from the Enterprise
Institute, Small Business Administration
By Dwaine Chapel
(SBA), a local attorney and an accountant. The students were funded in partnership with the South Dakota
Experimental Program to Stimulate
Competitive
Research
program
(EPSCoR). The EPSCoR program is
designed to assist n establishing a selfsustaining academic research enterprise
with the competitive capability that will
contribute to the states' economic viability and development.
The office of
Commercialization under the guidance of
the Mel Ustad from the Governor’s Office
of Economic Development (GOED) assisted in administrating this program.
With the inception of the LAIC Loan
Fund these young businesses and the
established businesses in Lake County
have an added opportunity to find funding. The program was set up as a part of
the Forward Madison initiative. For
more information on how this loan program works please call the LAIC office.
The LAIC applied for 3 different
grants to support the entrepreneurial
program this past year. A grant application was submitted to Rural Development
in the form of a Rural Business
Jack’s “The Meat Store”
Enterprise Grant (RBEG), to Citi Bank
and to the Northwest Foundation. There
were no funds awarded from these grant
applications. All three grants would have
been dispersed over a three year period.
The RBEG Grant will be resubmitted
during the second quarter of 2009.
The LAIC met with a number of businesses and investors during this period.
They have participated in numerous business proposals or project proposals. The
LAIC diligently worked on the Housing
Study, the TIF District, building of two
homes, Highway 34 Economic Impact
Study, Health Care Study, I-29 Corridor
Project, and the City’s Comprehensive
Plan.
The LAIC provided workforce incentive dollars to local entities assisting the
employees affected by the economic downturn. $15,000 was provided to the United
Way, ICAP, and the Food Pantry. The
LAIC has worked hard to build long lasting friendships with local, state, regional
and national policy makers. They have
hosted both state legislatures and congressional delegates and Governor
Rounds on several occasions.

The LAIC applied for an EDA Grant
but was unsuccessful, an industrial park
road grant in the amount of $485,000
(awarded), an IRP Loan in the amount of
$750,000 to create a revolving loan fund
(awarded), and co-applied with Heartland
for a $1,040,000 REDLG (awarded). The
LAIC worked with the Governor’s Office
of Economic Development to provide
workforce development grants to several
businesses totaling nearly $225,000 providing training for 201 local employees. A
successful Million $ Challenge application through GOED was awarded to the
Motongator Joe’s Country Music Festival
held annually at Prairie Village in the
amount of $12,500. The LAIC was awarded a Federal Appropriations Grant in the
amount of $200,000 from Senator Tim
Johnson.
This is a snapshot of what has been
accomplished over the past two years.
The economic success of Madison can only
be attributed to the investors of Forward
Madison. Their commitment to our community and county has provided the leadership needed to grow and prosper.
Thank you!

Lake Herman sets stage for fireworks
Celebrate Independence Day at
Madison’s Annual Fourth of July
Fireworks Display! Traditionally, this
event has been very popular, with attendance estimates at approximately 10,000
people. As in past years, there will be an
excellent display with an interesting variety of shells and a finale that will keep you
“oohing” and “aahing” for quite some time.
The display will be shown on Saturday,
July 4 at 10:00 PM on the North shore of
Lake Herman.
The Madison Chamber of Commerce, in
conjunction with the Madison Volunteer
Fire Department, would like to thank
those who support this project, through
donations and volunteer contributions.
We look forward to lighting up the skies, in
celebration of the 4th of July. Hope to see
you there!

Plan your staycation right here in Madison
Instead of planning a summer vacation
this year, plan a ‘staycation’, which continues to be a popular buzz word. For
those of you unsure about what you do on
a staycation, let me give you some tips.
Vacations are supposed to be fun and
relaxing. I’m sure each of you can tell me
a story about a glitch you had on your
‘relaxing vacation.’ Imagine not having to
deal with delays in the airport, lost luggage, road construction, expensive hotels,
high gas prices or the backseat chants of
“Are we there yet?” You can avoid all
these headaches by planning a ‘stay at
home vacation’ (aka staycation) right here
in Madison!
Here are some guidelines for a successful staycation:
Schedule start and end dates. Just
like you would if you were going on a vacation, schedule a starting and ending date.
This will help it seem more like a vacation.
Acquire a tourist state-of-mind and
plan your activities. In order to make
your staycation special and feel like a
retreat, plan activities just like you would
for a vacation. Check out the local historic
or recreational activities. Madison is overflowing with opportunities you may not
have considered. Prairie Village is always
interesting and this summer they are
hosting the Motongator Joe Country
Music Festival, Miss Prairie Village/Miss
Prairie Princess Pageants and their annual Steam Threshing Jamboree. When was
the last time you visited the SmithZimmerman museum located at DSU or
the Milwaukee Railroad museum at the
Depot? How about John Green’s art
gallery? Have you taken the time to walk
down Main Street and do a little shopping? Have you ridden your bike on the
bike trail? Is there an eating establishment you’ve never eaten at or one you
haven’t visited for awhile? We also have
several lakes for recreation, two state
parks for camping and two golf courses
within minutes of the city. You could even
pitch a tent in your backyard, roast
marshmallows over your fire pit and enjoy
the night sky. Or you could relax with the
family by playing games, seeing a movie or
spending a day at the new Aquatic Center
or The Community Center.
Located in numerous businesses in
town you will find the Madison
Visitor’s Guide. Pick one up the next
time you see it or stop at the Chamber
office and we’ll give you one. This will
help plan your activities, find places to
eat, shop, etc.
Leave the cooking to the experts.
When you’re on vacation you generally
don’t cook, so don’t do it on your staycation
either! Eat at the local restaurants in
town or at the lake. Maybe try something
new on the menu. Most restaurants also
offer take out so you could enjoy your meal
in one of the local parks.
No chores allowed. On vacation, we
never have to vacuum, do laundry, clean
the closets, mow or any other household
chores so why should you do it on your
staycation? Leave the chores alone and if
it drives you crazy, hire someone to clean
your house and a lawn care service or
neighbor to take care of the lawn.
Take pictures or videos. Capture
the moments with pictures or video like
you would on a vacation.
Disconnect. Turn off your cell phone,
computer and blackberry….they are convenient for work, but not for vacation.
Leave your home. If you have trouble
relaxing at home, stay at one of the local
motels or campgrounds.
Do what’s best for you and your
family. You know what your family likes
to do, if it’s not fun or relaxing, don’t do it.
When your staycation is over, you want to
feel refreshed and recharged.
Discover the Unexpected! Utilize
our tagline and discover something unexpected in Madison on your staycation.
You just may be surprised at
what you discover!

The Portrait Place,
How long has your company been
operating?
I have been in business for 14
years….I was quiet the first few years
getting started and then it took off and
became a full time studio.
How did your business get started?
I completed a photography course
mostly to learn how to develop film and
to improve my skills in photography for
personal reasons. From the first time I
developed an image in the darkroom
that I had taken I was hooked….it was
like magic and I loved it. To complete
the class I needed a space and lighting
equipment, from there it just happened.
Currently I photograph clients within a 60 mile radius of Howard. This
year I photographed several graduating
seniors that I photographed when I
first started, they were in preschool at
the time. I have also photographed several weddings that were first at the studio for senior pictures and now they
bring their children to the studio. I am
very blessed and thankful for all the
friendships that have formed.
Number of Employees
I am a single person studio.
