Todd Pletcher had suffered two tough
beats in Grade 1 races at Keeneland on Apr.
9 and was hoping that bad things don’t, in
fact, happen in sets of three.
Standing in a crowded little office in the
paddock at Aqueduct, he watched on the
tiniest of television sets as Outwork struck
the front in midstretch of the 92nd Wood
Memorial Stakes. The still-developing
colt, making just his fourth career start
was bracing for the oncoming challenge
of Trojan Nation, a maiden who at 81-1 was
the longest shot in the Wood field.
“Stay focused, stay focused,” shouted
Pletcher, who earlier in the day suffered
narrow losses with Rachel’s Valentina in
the Ashland and Stopchargingmaria in
the Madison.
Outwork may have been losing focus,
but he didn’t lose the race, edging Trojan
Nation by a head to win the Grade 1,
$1 million Wood Memorial at Aqueduct.
The win not only earned Outwork a spot
in the starting gate for the May 7 Kentucky
Derby at Churchill Downs, it helped avenge
a loss by his sire. Five years ago, Uncle Mo
finished third as the 1-9 favorite in the
Wood.
“Forget the Derby, forget everything
other than the fact it was a huge win for
him in his only his fourth lifetime start to
win a Grade 1,” Pletcher said. “It was extra
gratifying for our team because five years
ago Uncle Mo didn’t win the Wood Memorial. It’s sort of vindication in some ways
for him.”
Mike Repole owned Uncle Mo and he owns
and is the breeder of Outwork. He said
the 2011 Wood was “probably one of my

toughest racing days and today is probably
one of my best racing days.”
Outwork was game – if not fast – in
victory. Over a sealed, muddy track,
Outwork, under John Velazquez, dueled
outside of Matt King Coal, under Jose
Ortiz, through a half-mile in 45.06 seconds
and six furlongs in 1:12.31. The two came
into the stretch side-by-side, and it wasn’t
until just outside the eighth pole that
Outwork put away Matt King Coal.
At that time, Trojan Nation, a maiden
who lost all five of his starts, was charging
up the rail rallying from last under Aaron
Gryder. The two persevered through a final
eighth-mile in 14.02 seconds with Outwork
prevailing.
The final time of 1:52.92 was the slowest
time for a Wood Memorial at nine furlongs.
The previous slowest was 1:52.53 by Tale
of Ekati, who finished fourth in the 2008
Kentucky Derby.
“I think he lost focus a little bit when
he made the lead,” said Pletcher, who was
winning his fourth Wood Memorial.
“Johnny said he kind of idled on him
a bit, plus I think he was getting a little
tired. They ran along the first part pretty
well. I was hoping that didn’t catch up
with him late.”
Velazquez said he tried to keep Outwork
away from Matt King Coal down the backside.
“At the quarter pole, he put his ears up,
idled a lot,” Velazquez said. “He is still a
young horse who is still learning.”
While Outwork earned 100 qualifying
points to earn his way into the Derby,
Trojan Nation collected 40 points and
could run in the Derby as a maiden should
his connections go that way.
“We’ve always liked the horse,” said
trainer Paddy Gallagher from Southern
California, where he watched the race.
“As long as he’s happy and healthy why
not at least take a look at it for sure.”
Adventist closed down the center of the
track to finish third by a neck over Matt
King Coal. It was Adventist’s third straight
third-place finish in a graded stakes here
and he now has 32 qualifying points, which
could be enough to start in the Derby.

debut, earned 10 points, which will likely
not be enough to get him in.
Jockey Jose Ortiz said by the threeeighths pole Matt King Coal started bearing out, “which cost me third.”
The disappointment of the race was
Shagaf, who finished fifth, beaten four
lengths. He got stopped a little bit behind
horses around the turn, and then came
wide in the stretch and flattened out. By
virtue of his Gotham Stakes win last
month, he may still go on to the Derby.
“He elected to go inside and made a
sharp middle move there and just had
enough of the mud,” trainer Chad Brown
said. “We’ll just see how the horse comes
out of the race and go from there. If the
horse is healthy I’m inclined to hope for
a dry track at Churchill and a better trip.
I’m confident the horse can get a mile and
a quarter.”

Brody’s Cause took lengthy strides
toward the Kentucky Derby when rebounding off a poor 3-year-old debut and posting
an emphatic 1 3/4-length victory under Luis
Saez in the 92nd running of the Grade 1,
$1 million Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland
on Apr. 9.
My Man Sam was along late to get second
by a head over Cherry Wine, while Laoban
finished fourth and Zulu, the 2-1 favorite,
faded to 12th in a field of 14 3-year-olds. The
first- and third-place finishers are trained
by Dale Romans.
Brody’s Cause returned $10.40 to win as
second choice after finishing the 1 1/8-mile
distance in 1:50.20 over a fast track.
The triumph by Brody’s Cause not only
marked the second time in four years
that Romans has completed a sweep of the
Breeders’ Futurity and Blue Grass with the
same horse – he did it in 2011-12 with Dullahan – but more importantly, put Romans
squarely in the picture for the May 7 Derby
at Churchill Downs with Brody’s Cause, a
colt with an affinity for distance.
“We’re on to the Kentucky Derby with a
real chance,” Romans said.
Brody’s Cause was the only previous
stakes winner in the Blue Grass lineup. A
son of Giant’s Causeway, Brody’s Cause won
a maiden race last September at Churchill before winning the Breeders’ Futurity
in his next start. He then finished third
behind Nyquist and Swipe in the Oct. 31
Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Keeneland.
On an unseasonably cold spring day, and
with 20,848 in attendance, Laoban set fractions of 23.44 and 46.75 seconds over a fast
track while Brody’s Cause and Saez lagged
near the back of the pack. Nearing the
quarter pole, Star Hill went to a momentary lead after a sustained run through the
final turn, but then the closers unleashed
their rallies.
Brody’s Cause swung out and closed
swiftest of all, clearing off inside the
eighth pole en route to earning 100 Derby
qualifying points and a $600,000 check for
his owners, the Albaugh Family Stable of
Dennis Albaugh.
“When I put him outside, he kept going,”
Saez said.
Brody’s Cause was coming off a weak
race in his lone start since the Breeders’
Cup, a seventh-place finish in the March 12
Tampa Bay Derby.
“He’s a horse that needs a race,” Romans
said. “The Tampa race did him a lot of
good. We got him back where he needed to
be, and he showed what he can do. This is
the second biggest race in Kentucky, in my
opinion, and it feels great to win it.”
Bred in Kentucky by the partnership of
Gabriel Duignan, William Arvin Jr., and
Petaluma Bloodstock, Brody’s Cause was
a $350,000 purchase at the 2014 Keeneland
yearling sale.
My Man Sam, who broke from the 14-hole
with Julien Leparoux up, closed resolutely
on the far outside after being rank on the
first turn. He had three prior starts, all on
the inner track at Aqueduct.
“For him to go as wide as he did from as
far back as he did and still get up for second
shows what a remarkable race he ran,”
trainer Chad Brown said from New York.
“Hats off to the winner; the winner ran
terrific, but I think everyone would agree
that My Man Sam ran the best race.”
With a points distribution of 100-40-20-10,
the top four Blue Grass finishers all could
make the Derby field – including the Eric
Guillot-trained Laoban, still a maiden
after five starts.

The winner’s circle photos had all been
taken, everyone was about to walk away,
when jockey Kent Desormeaux yelled to
the track photographer to take one more.
Holding the Santa Anita Derby trophy,
he called over his brother, Keith, and
together, with each holding one arm of the
trophy, they lifted it aloft.

If this was something they had dreamed
of while running around as kids in
Maurice, La., it had now come true in the
gloaming of a rainy April day at Santa
Anita.
They had won the Grade 1, $1 million
Santa Anita Derby, and were headed,
together, to the Kentucky Derby.
“It’s extra special to be with Keith,” Kent
said.

The 3-year-old colt who will take them
to Louisville is Exaggerator, who splashed
through the sloppy, sealed going to a
6 1/4-length victory on Apr. 9 in the West’s
final major prep for the May 7 Kentucky
Derby. The victory atoned for a thirdplace finish last month in the San Felipe,
in which Danzing Candy and Mor Spirit
beat him.
Mor Spirit finished second, 2 1/4 lengths
in front of third-place Uncle Lino. Danzing
Candy, who set a sharp early pace, tired
from his efforts and wound up fourth,
beaten more than 13 lengths.
Diplodocus was fifth and was followed
by Denman’s Call, Smokey Image, and
Iron Rob.
Exaggerator earned 100 points, Mor
Spirit 40, from the 170 on offer for this
race. Both will head to Louisville.
Exaggerator ($8.80), the third choice,
completed 1 1/8 miles in 1:49.66. He has
now won 4 of 9 starts, with four of those
losses coming in races where he faced
Nyquist, the unbeaten, current favorite
for the Derby.
Asked what gave him confidence he
could beat Nyquist in four weeks, Keith
was honest.
“Nothing,” he said. “We’ve tried him
[four] times. I respect Nyquist. We’ll have
fun trying.”
Nyquist was not in this race, having run
one week earlier in the Florida Derby. Ten
were entered in the Santa Anita Derby,
and the field was reduced to eight when
Dressed in Hermes and Rare Candy were
scratched.
Danzing Candy, the second choice at 8-5,
flew out of the gate and set a brisk pace of
22.15 seconds for the opening quarter-mile
and 45.24 for a half-mile, with Uncle Lino
in closest attendance. Mor Spirit, the 7-5
favorite, was fourth early, as Exaggerator
dropped well back. Midway through the
race, he was seventh.
As the field went around the far turn,
Uncle Lino put more pressure on Danzing Candy, and eventually wrested the
lead from him. Mor Spirit kept grinding
away. But Exaggerator, as he did in the
San Felipe, turned in a furious rally. Last
time, he flattened out and wound up third.
This time, he kept on motoring. He roared
past Uncle Lino and bounded clear. Mor
Spirit kept to his task and reeled in Uncle
Lino for second.
“It’s easy to say I was full of confidence,
but I had doubts. He had a quick middle
quarter, but not enough to explain how
he finished,” Keith said of the San Felipe.
“The only way to rectify that was to do
what he did today. He was on point today.”
Both Keith and Kent Desormeaux said
the one thing they were convinced to do
was again have Exaggerator drop back
and make one run.
“Thank God we didn’t change tactics,”
Keith said.
Exaggerator, a son of Curlin, is owned by
a partnership that includes Matt Bryan’s
Big Chief Racing, the Head of Plains Partners run by Sol Kumin, and Ron Ortowski,
a long-time friend of Bryan’s.
Exaggerator has now won two milliondollar races, having captured the Delta
Jackpot last year. He also won the Saratoga Special last year, and finished second
in the Breeders’ Futurity and fourth in
the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile.
This year, he was second in the sevenfurlong San Vicente to Nyquist before
finishing third in the San Felipe.
Keith was impressed with Exaggerator’s
prerace demeanor. He saddled well, went
through the post parade professionally,
and never got warm. Sure, it was a chilly,
rainy day, but the conditions did not cause
Exaggerator to show any stress before the
race.
“Now the question is can he relax in
front of 150,000 screaming Kentuckians
and a nervous trainer,” Keith said.
Keith never has won the Kentucky
Derby. Kent has won three.
It’s old hat for Kent. “For me, it’s
surreal,” Keith said.

With a quarter-mile to go in the Ashland
Stakes at Keeneland on Apr. 9, the stage
was set: Three favorites were lined up
neatly across the track, with a dramatic
conclusion still to come.
Then what happened? Horse racing.
From the proverbial clouds, a 30-1 shot
named Weep No More came rolling past
the favored trio to post a stunning triumph
over Rachel’s Valentina in the 79th running
of the Grade 1, $500,000 Ashland, earning a
spot in the Kentucky Oaks.
“At the top of the lane, to be honest, I
didn’t think I’d get up,” said Corey Lanerie,
who rode Weep No More for the Ashbrook
Farm of Glenn Bromagen and trainer
Rusty Arnold. “But then about 70 yards
before wire, I was like, ‘Come on baby, you
can get it.’ ”
For most of the 1 1/16-mile Ashland, the
obvious question was whether 1-2 favorite
Cathryn Sophia would be able to overtake
front-running Carina Mia and outfin-

ish Rachel’s Valentina. After straightening into the stretch, Cathryn Sophia and
Rachel’s Valentina began edging away
from Carina Mia, but then the sweeping
outside burst by Weep No More carried her
a neck past Rachel’s Valentina while silencing the vast majority of the ontrack crowd.
Weep No More returned $62.20 to win
after finishing in 1:43.57 over a fast track.
Rachel’s Valentina, the 5-2 second choice,
was another neck ahead of Cathryn
Sophia. Carina Mia and Banree completed
the order of finish.
“We’ve been pointing for this race for two
months,” Arnold said. “With two turns,
she’s just really come around.”
Weep No More, a chestnut Kentucky-bred
filly by Mineshaft, was making her fourth
career start. Based through the winter
months at Payson Park in Florida with
Arnold’s assistant, Jack Bohannan, she
raced twice at Tampa Bay Downs, winning
a Jan. 22 maiden race and the ungraded
Suncoast Stakes three weeks later.
“Did we expect this?” Arnold said. “Not
quite, but she’s a step ahead of us. Jack
really did a great job with her at Payson,”
where a quarantine situation was in effect
for several weeks because of an infectiousdisease scare.
Weep No More earned 100 qualifying
points toward the Oaks and will move on as
a challenger to heavily favored Songbird in
the May 6 filly classic at Churchill Downs.
The Ashland victory was the second for
Lanerie, following Hooh Why in 2009, and
the second for Arnold (Karlovy Vary, 2012).
Barbara Banke, whose Stonestreet
Stables bred and owned Rachel’s Valentina, said she was pleased with the filly’s
first start in more than five months and
that she would consult with trainer Todd
Pletcher whether to proceed to the Oaks.
Rachel’s Valentina, second to Songbird
here last fall in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile
Fillies, earned 40 qualifying points.
Cathryn Sophia, trained by John Servis,
clearly was the disappointment of the race.
She got a perfect stalking trip under Javier
Castellano but was unable to clear off from
the pack as she had in all four of her prior
career starts.
Servis expressed reservations afterward
whether to move on to the Oaks.
“Maybe two turns is a little too far for
her,” Servis said. “We’ll see which way
we’re going to go.”
Although the win mutuel for Weep No
More was one of the biggest in race history,
it is still far off the $136.80 for Bold Dun-Cee
in 1967.

Persistence finally paid off for Salutos
Amigos, who uncorked his patented late
run for a last-to-first victory in the $400,000
Carter Handicap on Apr. 9, his first Grade
1 success in nine tries.
As has become typical for Salutos
Amigos, he raced far back in last through
the opening stages, and still trailed while
fanning out wide approaching the stretch
under Cornelio Velasquez. From that point
on, the 6-year-old gelding closed inexorably to prevail by a head over California
invader Calculator in the 116th running of
the seven-furlong race.
Had the order of finish been reversed,
there likely would have been an inquiry.
In the final furlong, Calculator bore out
steadily and carried Salutos Amigos out
past the middle of the track. Both were able
to overtake Dads Caps, who had taken over
from pacesetter Green Gratto turning for
home and momentarily seemed en route to
his third straight win in the Carter.
In the end, Salutos Amigos prevailed
by a head over Calculator, who had 1 1/2
lengths on Dads Caps. Anchor Down was
fourth, followed by Stallwalkin’ Dude,
Sassicaia, Majestic Affair, and Green
Gratto.
“My horse broke good, but I didn’t want
him too close because he wouldn’t see
anyone,” Velasquez said.
“The horse in front was coming out, but
once I was able to put him in the clear, I
had a lot of horse the last sixteenth.”
Salutos Amigos carried top weight of
123 pounds, giving six pounds to Calculator. He ran seven furlongs in 1:23.15 over
a sealed muddy track, improving to 7 for 7
over off-going, and 12 for 38 overall.
“Even though he is a gelding, he deserves
a Grade 1 under his belt,” said winning
trainer David Jacobson. “I don’t think we
got the best trip. He’s such a good horse.

I think he overcame going wide, getting
bumped. Usually he breaks a little better
– he’s the first one out of the gate, and
then we drop him back. So, I was a little
concerned for about a minute eight or nine
seconds. It’s all heart with him.”

A sealed and sloppy track did not deter
Songbird in the $400,345 Santa Anita Oaks
on Apr. 9.
The undefeated champion 2-year-old
filly of 2015, Songbird made her first
start on an off track in the Grade 1 Santa
Anita Oaks for 3-year-olds fillies and ran
a race similar to her previous six wins on
fast tracks – she won easily and without
urging in the final furlong from jockey
Mike Smith.
Songbird, who races for Rick Porter,
will make her next start in the $1 million
Kentucky Oaks at 1 1/8 miles at Churchill
Downs on May 6, where she figures to be
a short-priced favorite in the prestigious
race.
Smith said Songbird needed a few
furlongs to gain her footing in the Santa
Anita Oaks, but eventually handled the
going without difficulty.
“She’s gotten so professional and good
at everything,” Smith said. “She spun her
wheels into the first turn, but when she
found her rhythm she was comfortable.
Once she got forward, she was fine.”
Songbird ($2.20) was timed in 1:44.14 for
1 1/16 miles. She led by 1 1/2 lengths over
25-1 Forever Darling through early fractions of 23.34 seconds for the opening
quarter-mile and 47.17 seconds for a halfmile.
The trailing pack of five fillies were
never closer. Songbird led by four lengths
on the turn and by six lengths with a
furlong remaining when Smith stopped
urging his mount. The final margin was
3 3/4 lengths over 14-1 Mokat, who closed
from fifth of six.

Breeding
Songbird is trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, who has repeatedly spoken in admiration of the filly since her career began last
summer. During the Santa Anita Oaks,
Hollendorfer was closely observing how
Songbird handled the off going.
“I was watching her stride and she was
striding the best of everyone,” Hollendorfer said.
She’s a Warrior, a maiden, finished
third in the Santa Anita Oaks, followed by
Forever Darling, Bellamentary, and Kay
Kay.
Songbird, by Medagalia d’Oro, has won
six stakes in her career, including four
Grade 1 races. She won the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies at Keeneland last
October to clinch her championship.
Songbird has earned $1,982,000 in her
career. She has won three races this year,
including the Grade 2 Las Virgenes Stakes
at a mile on Feb. 6 and the Grade 3 Santa
Ysabel Stakes at 1 1/16 miles on March 5.

By the end of the 2015 racing season,
Sheer Drama and Stopchargingmaria had
combined to win five Grade 1 events and
earn more than $4 million. Their connections could have retired them to their
respective broodmare bands with few
regrets.
However, both mares returned to the
track for 2016 – and rewarded their connections, and the crowd that braved the chilly
weather at Keeneland on Apr. 9, with a stellar showdown in their season debuts. The
two dueled the length of the stretch in the
Grade 1, $300,000 Madison Stakes, with
Sheer Drama prevailing by a neck.
Sheer Drama ($18.80), who was fourth in
the Breeders’ Cup Distaff at Keeneland in
her last outing, exacted some revenge on
Stopchargingmaria, who won that event.
Wavell Avenue, winner of the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint, finished
another two lengths back in third.
“I talked to [Keeneland racing secretary]
Ben Huffman about this race early in the
year, and thought it might be a good starting spot. Never expected it to come up this
tough,” said Sheer Drama’s trainer, David
Fawkes. “But she ran her race – she brought
her ‘A’ game. She worked so good last week,
I thought she could do anything.”
When the gates opened, California invaders Sunday Rules and Enchanting Lady
bounced out quickly, narrowly leading
Fioretti through an opening quarter-mile
of 22.42 seconds. Stopchargingmaria,
breaking from post 10 under Javier Castellano, quickly cleared part of the field to sit
in fifth early, while Sheer Drama and Joe
Bravo, breaking from the rail after the
scratch of Cavorting, settled in seventh
behind horses.
“As the gates broke she took really good
position,” Bravo said.
Sunday Rules still led the field through
the half in 44.86, but was beginning to
feel heavy pressure from Fioretti. Meanwhile, Bravo worked out a clear path for
Sheer Drama, who moved into the five path
around the far turn and into the lane, with
Stopchargingmaria to her outside.
“The outside post didn’t help her much,
and I had to go wide a little bit,” Castellano said. “That might have cost me the
race but it’s something you just gotta deal
with. You have to go through it and hope
for much the best.”
Sheer Drama struck the lead inside the
quarter pole, but Stopchargingmaria, still
with momentum on the outside, came to her.
The two engaged in a battle for the length of

the stretch, with Sheer Drama edging clear
at the wire after being headed. The final
time for the seven furlongs was 1:22.07.
“Sheer Drama was having none of that,”
Bravo said of the moment when his mare
was headed. “She was passed and she
didn’t care. And she outran the filly from
the top of the lane to the wire. She just outhorsepowered her.”
After Wavell Avenue – who rallied from
10th in her first start since the Filly and
Mare Sprint – in third, it was another
length back to Grade 1 winner Birdatthewire in fourth.
Sheer Drama, a Florida-bred daughter of
Burning Roma who races as a homebred
for Harold Queen, came into the best form
of her career last summer at age 5, winning
the Grade 1 Delaware Handicap and Grade
1 Personal Ensign Stakes. With the win
in the Madison – her ninth career stakes
win or placing – she pushed her earnings
past $1.6 million. Fawkes admitted that he
“begged” Queen to keep the star racemare
in training for another season rather than
retiring her.
“When you only have one Grade 1 horse
in your barn you do a lot of begging,”
Fawkes said. “Mr. Queen was really
thinking about breeding her. I went out
to the farm [to see her, and said], ‘Look at
her, she’s put a bunch of weight on. She’s
matured even more.’ I’m really glad we
brought her back.”
Stopchargingmaria, a multiple graded
stakes winner as a juvenile, blossomed
into one of the top 3-year-old fillies in the
summer of 2014, winning the Grade 1
Coaching Club American Oaks and Grade
1 winning the Alabama Stakes at Saratoga
and finishing second to older foes in the
Grade 1 Beldame Stakes at Belmont. At
the end of that season, owner Mike Repole
offered her at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky
fall selected mixed sale, but she failed to
meet her reserve with a hammer price of
$3.15 million. Town and Country Farms
subsequently stepped in to purchase her
privately, and decided to leave her with
Todd Pletcher to race. She finished second
in the 2015 Madison before winning the
Grade 3 Allaire DuPont Distaff and Grade 3
Shuvee Handicap. After finishing fourth to
Sheer Drama in the Personal Ensign, she
outdueled eventual 3-year-old champion
Stellar Wind by a neck for the Distaff win.
Stopchargingmaria and Sheer Drama
finished second and third to three-time
champion Beholder in Eclipse Award
balloting for champion older dirt female
of 2015. Both will contend in that division
on the East Coast this year. Fawkes said

is the Grade 1 La Troienne Stakes on
the Kentucky Oaks undercard May 6 at

There’s a saying in horse racing if you
want to make God laugh, make a plan.
Five months ago, Chad Brown planned
to run Lewis Bay in the Grade 2, $300,000
Gazelle Stakes and it was Brown who
had the last laugh on Apr. 9 as Lewis Bay
glided over the gooey going at Aqueduct to
win the Gazelle by 1 1/2 lengths.
Royal Obsession finished second by
seven lengths over Mo d’Amour. Dreams
to Reality, Flora Dora, and Clair de Lune
completed the order of finish. Behrnik’s
Bank scratched due to the wet track,
according to her owner/trainer Peter
Kazamias.
Lewis Bay was making just her second
start since last Nov. 28, the day she won
the Grade 2 Demoiselle over Aqueduct’s
main track. It was shortly thereafter that
Brown planned on running Lewis Bay in
the Davona Dale at Gulfstream in February and then the Gazelle as steppingstones to a potential start in the Kentucky
Oaks.
Lewis Bay finished second, seven
lengths behind Cathryn Sophia in the
Grade 2 Davona Dale on Feb. 27.
“Right after she won the Demoiselle we
planned on the Davona Dale and Gazelle,”
Brown said. “Sure enough, she hit every
breeze, she hit both races, and she’s done
everything perfect. She’s such an honest,
consistent horse you can make a schedule
with a horse like her and she stuck to it.
Very proud of her.”
Brown figured Lewis Bay was the horse
to beat in the Gazelle and instructed
jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. to ride her as such.
She broke alertly, but Ortiz wanted to
follow someone so he took Lewis Bay three

to four wide into the first turn as stablemate Claire de Lune set the pace stalked
by Mo d’Amour.
The pace was tepid and Lewis Bay
cruised to the front-runners, putting
a head in front just before six furlongs
were run in 1:13.88. Lewis Bay opened up
a three-length lead in midstretch, but got
to waiting on horses and her final margin
ended up being 1 1/2 lengths.
“I don’t want to make the lead too early
but she just passed the horses on her own,”
said Ortiz.
Lewis Bay, a daughter of Bernardini
owned by the Alpha Delta Stables, covered
the 1 1/8 miles in 1:52.60 over a sealed,
muddy track and returned $5.50 as the
favorite. She also earned 100 qualifying
points to the May 6 Kentucky Oaks, which
will be her next target.
“She’s learning; the longer she can wait
to get by horses the better,” Brown said.
“We’ll continue to work on that. But she’s
an exciting horse coming into the Oaks. I
know you got to face a horse like Songbird
if she stays healthy and shows up there
and that’s a tall task, but anything can
happen in a horse race and it’s a big purse
and it’s a prestigious race so if our filly is
sound and happy we’ll go.”
Royal Obsession earned 40 points and
could run in the Oaks if her connections
desire. However, she is owned by Stonestreet Stable, which also owns Rachel’s
Valentina, who ran a game second in the
Grade 1 Ashland on Apr. 9. Mo d’Amour,
who was beaten 8 1/2 lengths, would also
have enough points to run in the Oaks.
Her connections, Ed Stanco’s King of
Prussia Stable, won the Oaks in 2013 with
Princess of Sylmar.

Last year, Undrafted needed a couple
of races to hit his best stride after harsh
winter weather delayed his preparation
for spring racing.
Making his first 2016 start on Apr. 9 at
Keeneland in the Grade 2, $200,000 Shakertown, he showed no signs of lacking
fitness. He swooped past the field with
an outside rally, edging defending race
winner Something Extra by a half-length.
A closer, Undrafted capitalized on a
furious pace in the 5 1/2-furlong Shakertown on “good” turf, as longshots Latent
Heat and Rocket Heat blitzed the opening
quarter in 20.93 seconds and a half-mile in
43.93.
Coming into the stretch, the frontrunners were running on fumes, and it
was Something Extra, who had stalked
the pace, who got the jump on the competition. But after opening up in midstretch,
he didn’t have enough to repel the late
onslaught of the classy Undrafted, who
completed the distance in 1:02.96.
“He just exploded turning for home,”
winning jockey Joe Bravo said.
Trainer Wesley Ward also had high
praise for Undrafted, a 6-year-old gelded
son of Purim. He compared him to the
horse’s co-owner, NFL receiver Wes
Welker. “He’s kind of like his owner, a
little guy but tough,” Ward said.
Undrafted ($9), who won the Group 1
Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Ascot last
June, could follow the same path he took
last year. If so, that could take him to
Churchill Downs for the Twin Spires Turf
Sprint on May 6 before going to England.
Something Extra, one of the few horses
to run well after being close to the early
pace, held on by half a length for the place
over Commute, who rallied from 11th in
the field of 12 to finish third.
Power Alert, the 5-2 favorite, broke a
step slowly from the inside post and, after
stalking the leaders, weakened to eighth.

Subtle Indian called on his quickness
to dominate a deep field in the Grade 3,
$400,000 Count Fleet Sprint Handicap at
Oaklawn Park on Apr. 10. He won by 3 3/4
lengths over millionaire Alsvid, while it
was another 2 1/4 lengths back in third to
seven-time stakes winner Cinco Charlie.
Subtle Indian ($6) was winning his fourth
straight race in the Count Fleet, in a streak
that has been built over the course of the

meet that opened in January. He broke on
top from the rail post Sunday and never
looked back to cover six furlongs in a blazing 1:08.80.
“You don’t see many horses leave out of
the gate as fast as him, especially out of the
one-hole,” said winning trainer Robertino
Diodoro.
The Count Fleet was Oaklawn’s main
event for sprinters, and part of its $3.75
million Racing Festival of the South. The
festival features nine major stakes run
over the final week of the meet that closes
Saturday with the Grade 1, $1 million
Arkansas Derby.
Subtle Indian took quick command of
the Count Fleet, pushing off to a clear lead
through an opening quarter-mile in 21.42
seconds. He maintained his 1 1/2- length
advantage through a half-mile in 44.38
and opened up in the stretch under jockey
Ramon Vazquez.
“He’s lightning fast,” Vazquez said. “The
plan was to go to the front and never look
back. It worked in a big way today. I know
there were a lot of talented runners in the
field today, but my horse never looked back
once we left the gate. It’s a great feeling to
win on this nice horse.”
Alsvid, who won last year’s Count Fleet,
was turning back from a mile and made a
late run at Subtle Indian.
“What a classy horse my horse is,”
said Channing Hill, who rode Alsvid.
“I’ve been watching him run and have
been outrun by him a few times, but he’s
all class. I have to give the winner a lot
of credit because he flew around there.
We gained a little bit of ground down the
stretch, but it wasn’t enough.”
Diodoro said plans beyond the Count
Fleet have not been discussed for the
horse. Subtle Indian has now won 7 of 9
starts and the $240,000 he earned Sunday
pushed his career bankroll to $500,300. He
races for his breeder, Mercedes Stables of
California.
“It’s an honor to train for people like that
and get a horse like that,” Diodoro said.
“They have a lot of well-bred horses.”

Breeding
Terra Promessa will head to the Kentucky
Oaks unbeaten around two turns after she
held off stablemate Taxable to win her
fourth straight race in the Grade 3, $400,000
Fantasy at Oaklawn Park on Apr. 10.
The fillies trained by Steve Asmussen
earned a respective 100 points and 40 points
toward the May 6 Oaks at Churchill Downs.
“We’re definitely trying to get to the Oaks
with both fillies, and felt this was the best
opportunity for them,” Asmussen said.
Terra Promessa was a neck winner over
Taxable, who had won both of her starts
heading into the Fantasy. It was another 5
3/4 lengths back in third to Ready Confess,
who picked up 20 points toward the Oaks.
Cosmic Evolution finished fourth to earn 10
points.
The Fantasy launched the $3.75 million
Racing Festival of the South at Oaklawn,
which will feature nine major stakes over
the final week of its meet that closes Apr. 16.
Terra Promessa ($2.80) raced a few
lengths off Cosmic Evolution, Florida Bird,
and Ready to Confess, who battled through
fractions of 23.57 seconds for the opening
quarter-mile and 46.96 for the half-mile.
Terra Promessa advanced on the final
turn, opened up the race in the stretch, and
then held off a bid from Taxable to cover 1
1/16 miles on a track rated fast in 1:45.06.
“That’s a really, really nice filly,” winning
rider Ricardo Santana Jr. said. “She’s hardtrying. Every race she’s doing better and
better. I really like my filly for the Oaks. I
think we really have a good chance in that
race.”
Taxable was a pick-up mount for Joe
Rocco Jr. after Corey Nakatani took off his
mounts for the day.
“My filly ran really well,” Rocco said.
“We sat off the favorite and took our time,
picked our way through the field. When I
called on her, she gave me a nice run and
I thought we were going to get by the other
filly.”
Terra Promessa races for her breeder,
Stonestreet Stables. She began her win
streak in her two-turn debut last November at Churchill Downs, where she won a
maiden special weight at 1 1/16 miles. Terra
Promessa proceeded to win a first-level
allowance at Oaklawn by nine lengths Feb.
5, then the track’s Grade 3, $200,000 Honeybee by 6 1/2 lengths on March 12.
Terra Promessa earned $240,000 for the
win in the Fantasy to improve her career
earnings to $440,600. Overall, she has won
4 of 5 starts. Terra Promessa is a daughter
of Curlin who was bred in Kentucky.

Despite breaking a step slow, Unified
recovered to get the early lead and
turned back a persistent but outgunned
King Kranz to win the Grade 3, $300,000
Bay Shore Stakes at Aqueduct on Apr. 9,
remaining unbeaten through two starts.
Dispatched as the clear choice in the
field of six 3-year-olds, Unified ($4.40) did
not break as alertly as he had in winning
his debut at Gulfstream Park, but the
Candy Ride colt moved through to get the
lead from King Kranz through the opening quarter-mile, and repelled that rival
through the stretch to score by three
lengths beneath Jose Ortiz. King Kranz
was eight lengths ahead of third-place
finisher Cocked and Loaded, and the order
of finish was completed by Awesome Gent,
Richie the Bull, and Sallisaw in a strungout field.
Unified earned a sensational 99 Beyer
Figure first out, and he looked similarly
impressive splashing away from King
Kranz and galloping out strongly past the
wire. He earned a 102 Beyer for his effort
in the Bay Shore.
“He didn’t break great, but he broke
good Ortiz,” said. “I was in a good position and [winning trainer Jimmy Jerkens]
told me to wait until they come to him. I
waited until the quarter pole, and when
I asked him to go, he flew. I think he is
really, really nice. Now he’s got two races
that prove that. The horses with five or six
races under their belts – he with just one
race – he beat them.”
Unified ran seven furlongs on a sealed
muddy track in 1:22.86, and earned
$180,000 for Centennial Farms while
handling the added distance and class rise
with speed to spare.
“Only quality horses do that,” Jerkens
said. “He broke stupidly sharp last time,
which horses never do, and I didn’t expect
him [to do that again], but he got the lead
easy enough, though the first quarter
was a bit quick. When I saw King Kranz’s
jockey scrubbing on him in the middle of
the turn, I felt pretty confident. He showed
us a lot today.”

Ami’s Flatter continued to show that
one turn is to his liking, rallying strongly
in the lane to post his first graded stakes
victory in the Grade 3, $250,000 Commonwealth Stakes on Apr. 9 at Keeneland.
“He just got a wonderful ride,” said Ruth
Schmidt, assistant to trainer Josie Carroll.
“He’s doing wonderful. He was as happy as
could be coming into this race.”
Ami’s Flatter ($10.60) and Martin Garcia
settled in fifth early as the favored Holy
Boss, making his first start since finishing fourth in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint, led
recent stakes winner Barbados through
opening splits of 22.49 and 45.01 seconds.
Holy Boss was let out a notch around
the turn and responded with a strong kick
to increase his lead to 1 1/2 lengths, but
Ami’s Flatter began making up ground,
moving into third as the field approached
the stretch. Garcia swung his mount wide
to collar the leaders just inside the quarter pole, and the colt continued on willingly to win by 2 3/4 lengths. He stopped
the clock in 1:21.66 for seven furlongs on a
track rated fast – 0.34 seconds off the track
record on a day when a record did fall
earlier on the card.
The versatile Ready for Rye closed for
second, edging Holy Boss by a head. Barbados was another head back in fourth.
Ami’s Flatter was multiple graded
stakes-placed at longer distances as a
3-year-old, finishing second in the Grade 2
Tampa Bay Derby and third in the Grade
1 Florida Derby. The Ontario-bred son of
Flatter is now 3 for 3 at this seven-furlong
distance. He came into the Commonwealth
off a fourth-place finish in the Grade 3
Fred Hooper at a mile in February at Gulfstream.

Kid Cruz has shed his reputation as a
one-run closer and in the process is starting to win races again.
For his second straight start, Kid Cruz
was kept much closer to the pace by jockey
Jose Ortiz than he was in the past, and for
the second straight race, he was able to pull
out a half-length victory, this time outfinishing Madefromlucky in the Grade 3,
$200,000 Excelsior Stakes at rainy, raw
Aqueduct on Apr. 9.
Madefromlucky, who set the pace,
finished second by 6 3/4 lengths over
Turco Bravo. Norumbega was fourth,
followed by Good Luck Gus, who broke
through the starting gate prerace.
The win was the seventh from 19 starts
for Kid Cruz, a 5 year-old son of Lemon
Drop Kid owned by Vina Del Mar Thoroughbreds and Black Swan Stable and
trained by Linda Rice. In his previous
start, Kid Cruz won the John Campbell
Stakes at Laurel Park.
In the Campbell, Kid Cruz lay within
three lengths of the early lead. In many of
his previous races, he was kept well back
off the pace and came with a closing kick.
But he had lost nine consecutive races
before his victory in the Campbell.
“He was running too far back, then we’d
make our move, and we couldn’t catch up
in the end,” Ortiz said. “I decided this year
to put him closer, and it’s paid off.”
On paper, there didn’t appear to be any
pace in the Excelsior. Madefromlucky,
under John Velazquez, dictated the pace,
running a quarter in 24.15 seconds, a halfmile in 49.13, and six furlongs in 1:13.03
while stalked by Good Luck Gus.
Kid Cruz was within 1 1/2 lengths of
the lead in third before Ortiz had him
on the move between horses entering
the turn. Kid Cruz moved into second
around the turn, crept up alongside Madefromlucky at the quarter pole, and was
able to edge clear from that rival inside
the sixteenth despite Ortiz dropping t
he reins.
“Last time, I put him close to the lead
at Laurel, so I tried to do the same thing
today,” Ortiz said.
Kid Cruz covered the 1 1/4 miles in
2:04.52 over a track labeled “fast.” He
returned $5 to win.
“It doesn’t matter if there’s a lot of pace
or no pace, you still have to ride him
damn near every step of the way,” Rice
said. “That’s just the way he is. Jose’s got
enough experience on him to accommodate that.”

Carrumba made a successful – and for
her connections an emotional – return to
the races on Apr. 10 at Aqueduct, edging
away from Mei Ling in deep stretch to
win the Grade 3, $200,000 Top Flight Invitational Handicap by a hard-fought halflength.
The victory comes just five days after
Ogden Mills “Dinny” Phipps, the owner
and breeder of Carrumba, died. Phipps’s
son, Ogden II, walked Carrumba into the
winner’s circle following the victory.
“Absolutely, this win was emotional,” the
younger Phipps said. “Our first time back
at the races and it’s obviously a big part of
how we grew up with my dad. Coming back
here and seeing a filly that he really loved
and winning a stake is very emotional.
Every time one of our horses runs in his
colors I think it’s going to be emotional for
us.”
This was the fifth win for the Phipps
family in the Top Flight. The first came
in 1951 with Busanda for Ogden Phipps,
Dinny’s father and Ogden’s grandfather.
Dinny Phipps won this race in 1994 with
Educated Risk, in 2001 with Cat Cay, and in
2004 with Daydreaming.
Carrumba is by Bernardini but her
female family is full of Grade 1 winners
campaigned by the Phipps family, including Heavenly Prize, the champion 3-yearold filly of 1994.

Carrumba could elevate into the upper
echelon of the older filly and mare division
and Sunday’s Top Flight was a good first
step.
In her first start since last Nov. 28,
Carrumba stalked the pacesetting Mei
Ling through a half-mile in 49.17 seconds
and six furlongs in 1:12.86. Carrumba
poked a nose in front of Mei Ling at the
three-eighths pole, but Mei Ling still had
some fight in her.
Through the stretch, Carrumba began
to drift out under Ortiz’s left-handed whip,
but Jose Ortiz got her straightened out
enough to get past Mei Ling for the victory.
“I was very confident down the backside
but I was a little surprised that Mei Ling
fought me as hard as she did in the homestretch,” Ortiz said. “But I rode her last
time and she’s a fighter too. I knew she was
going to fight a little bit because I knew we
went easy early.”
Mei Ling finished second by 15 3/4 lengths
over America. Noble and a Beauty was last.
Saythreehailmary’s scratched.
Carrumba covered the 1 1/8 miles in
1:50.26 and returned $3.30 as the favorite.
Speaking of Dinny Phipps, Ortiz said,
“It’s very sad to lose one person like that
from the industry. My condolences to the
Phipps family and this one is for him.”

said the filly would likely be pointed to the
Grade 2 Ruffian at Belmont on May 14 and

Decked Out had an adventuresome trip
when fifth in the $81,075 China Doll Stakes
at Santa Anita on March 12, racing wide
early and then on the inside before losing
by a length.
Decked Out had a less eventful journey in
the $151,380 Providencia Stakes for 3-yearold fillies at 1 1/8 miles on turf on Apr. 9.
Jockey Kent Desormeaux kept Decked Out
outside of rivals and guided the filly to the
front with a wide rally in the final furlong
to win the Grade 3 race by a convincing 2
3/4 lengths over 19-1 Jeremy’s Legacy.
Nodiac, the 7-2 second choice, finished
third. Decked Out ($8.60) was timed in
1:52.72 on a turf course labeled good.
Desormeaux said he needed to position
Decked Out behind rivals in the China Doll
to keep her from running out, but did not
feel the need to use the same strategy in the
Providencia.
“She’s really matured,” Desormeaux
said. “She’s letting me drive. Before, she
was running [all] out. Before I wouldn’t
have thought she could go six furlongs.
Now, I think she can go a mile and a quarter.”
Sheeza Milky Way finished fourth,
followed by Lady Valeur, Mirage, How
Unusual, Kiss N Scat, and Do the Dance.
Decked Out, by Street Boss, races for Gene
Voss and Big Chief Racing and is trained by
Desormeaux’s brother, Keith Desormeaux.
Decked Out has won 2 of 10 starts and
earned $222,514.
The Providencia was Decked Out’s eighth
stakes appearance. She was second in the
Astoria Stakes at Belmont Park last June
in her second start.

The favored Kentucky shipper Leigh
Court led all the way under Florent Geroux
in the Grade 3 Whimsical Stakes at Woodbine on Apr. 10.
Leigh Court set moderate fractions of
22.48 and 45.25 seconds while being pressed
by Green Doctor in the six-furlong sprint
for fillies and mares. She drew clear entering the stretch and went on to prevail by
two lengths over Galina Point, who edged
out Skylander Girl for third.
The final time of 1:08.88 was .72 of a second
off Woodbine’s synthetic track record.
“She broke very alertly, and I was able
to make the lead very nicely and comfortably,” Geroux said. “She’s very tough when
she can be on the lead like this and relax.
She gave me a nice turn of foot at the quarter pole.”
Leigh Court ($3.30), Canada’s champion
3-year-old filly in 2013, banked $90,000 of
the $161,400 purse for Speedway Stable and
trainer Mike Stidham.

Inspector Lynley was another half-length
back in third and just a nose in front of
Converge, the 2-1 second choice.
Wilson and Attfield spend most of their
time in Canada. Attfield makes Keeneland a regular stopover to and from Florida every year, but Wilson takes a break
from riding every winter and typically
launches a comeback at about this time of
year. Her ride on Shakhimat was just her
sixth this year.
Shakhimat “settled back and was in
my hands,” Wilson said. “Every time this
horse works, he’s so keen when he puts
his head in front. I had quite a bit of horse
turning for home, and unless something
really came running, I thought we would
be tough.”
Shakhimat, an Ontario-bred by Lonhro,
is owned by Richard Hogan and Dan Gale.
The Transylvania was his first start in
exactly five months. The colt won two of
his three starts last year at 2, all at Woodbine, with a victory in the ungraded Coronation Futurity capping his season.
The winning time was 1:42.65 over a turf
course rated firm.
Catapult, the 9-5 favorite and like
Converge trained by Chad Brown, finished
fifth.

The $100,690 San Juan Capistrano Stakes
at 1 7/8 miles on turf was the longest race of
the 63-day winter-spring meeting at Santa
Anita that ended on Apr. 10. It was over
in arguably the shortest amount of time
compared with other stakes at the meeting.
On the final turn, Quick Casablanca
made a last-to-first move in a little more
than a furlong under jockey Tyler Baze
that clinched the victory in the Grade 3
stakes.
Quick Casablanca ($5.80) was favored in
the field of seven and gave Hall of Fame
trainer Ron McAnally, 83, his fourth
career win in the San Juan Capistrano.
Previously, McAnally won the San Juan
with John Henry (1980), Amerique (1998),
and Interaction (2013).
The 8-year-old Quick Casablanca became
the oldest winner of the San Juan Capistrano since 8-year-old Mashkour won for
trainer Bobby Frankel in 1991. The win
was McAnally’s first in a stakes since Miss
Serendipity’s victory in the Grade 2 Yellow
Ribbon Stakes at Del Mar in September
2014.
“He’s a nice horse,” McAnally said. “He’s
an old horse and he’s a pro. He’s old, like
me.”
The San Juan Capistrano was run at its
longest distance in its 76th running. The
race was scheduled for about 1 3/4 miles
with a start on the hillside turf course but
was moved to the oval portion of the yielding turf course and extended to 1 7/8 miles
because of a rainstorm the previous day.
Baze gave Quick Casablanca a patient
ride. The Chilean-bred horse was last for
the first 1 1/2 miles of the race, stalking a
slow pace set by Kenjisstorm. Baze moved
Quick Casablanca to the outside of runners
going into the final turn and got an immediate response, emerging with the lead
before the stretch.
Quick Casablanca led by three lengths
with a furlong to go and won by 2 3/4 lengths
over 3-1 Generosidade, a 7-year-old mare
who won the Grade 2 San Luis Rey Stakes
on March 13. Quick Casablanca was timed
in 3:19.58, establishing a course record.
“To do it for Mr. McAnally is really
special,” Baze said. “In the paddock, Mr.
McAnally said gallop the first lap. He was
really flying in the last three-eighths.”
Life’s Journey, a 14-1 outsider, finished
third, followed by Energia Fribby, Cardiac,
Generoso, and Kenjistorm.
After the race, Cardiac propped while
being ridden back to be unsaddled, unseating jockey Fernando Perez, who fell heavily. Perez was attended to by ambulance
personnel and later transferred to a local
hospital.
Quick Casablanca races for Pedro Gomez
of Chile, whom McAnally said he has never
met. Quick Casablanca has won 5 of 28
starts and earned $749,160. Quick Casablanca won two Group 1 races in Chile in
2012. He was sent to the United States in
the winter of 2012-13 and raced for trainer
Christophe Clement in 2013, going winless
in five starts in New York, all stakes.
Quick Casablanca joined McAnally’s
stable in early 2014 and won his California
debut in the Grade 3 Last Tycoon Stakes
here in April 2014. Quick Casablanca lost
10 subsequent starts before his win in the
San Juan Capistrano.

When What a View went into the first
turn of the $102,070 Thunder Road Stakes
on turf at Santa Anita on Apr. 9, trainer
Kenny Black was surprised at the 5-yearold gelding’s position. Instead of being on
or near the lead, What a View was sixth in
the field of 11.
“I was not happy,” Black said.
Black expected Hall of Fame jockey Kent
Desormeaux to have What a View near the
front. The field was on the final turn, with
What a View fighting for the lead, when the
trainer’s point of view changed.
“I liked it when I saw him going to the
lead at the quarter-pole,” Black said.
“That’s why he’s in the Hall of Fame and
I’m not. To be that far back with no pace
in the race, on paper, I did not see that
coming.”
The victory gave jockey Kent Desormeaux
his third stakes win of the afternoon. He
won the $151,380 Providencia Stakes with
Decked Out, and the $1,000,690 Santa Anita
Derby with Exaggerator.
It was the second time Desormeaux won
three stakes on a single day at Santa Anita.
In April 1998, he won the Valiant Pete
Handicap on Awesome Daze, the Royal
Owl Handicap on Mufattish, and the Santa
Paula Stakes on Loveontheroad. In August
2008 at Monmouth Park, Desormeaux won
three stakes on the same program, highlighted by a win in the Haskell Invitational
on Big Brown.
The Thunder Road was run at a mile on a
yielding course after an afternoon of rain.

last April, set the early pace of 23.62 seconds
for the opening quarter mile and 48.27 for
the half mile. He faded from contention in
the stretch.
What a View closed from 3 1/2 lengths off
the pace with a wide rally to win his fourth
consecutive race in the Grade 3 Thunder
Road Stakes. In his last three wins earlier
at this meeting, What a View led or disputed
the pace in winning an optional claimer in
December, the California Cup Turf Classic
in January and the Grade 1 Frank Kilroe
Mile on March 12.
“He was coming off the bridle today and
there was no way in the last month or two
that he [would] let me ride him like he let
me ride him today,” Desormeaux said.
What a View was timed in 1:39.01 in the
Thunder Road.
Twentytwentyvision, a 3-1 shot who had
not started since winning an optional
claimer at Del Mar last August, closed
from ninth to finish second, a neck in front
of 18-1 Soul Driver.
What a View, a California-bred by Vronsky, has won 6 of 12 starts and earned
$592,148. He has been in the best form of his
career at the current meeting. What a View
races for Finish Line Racing, the estate of
Bud Johnston, and Patsy and Sal Berumen.
