California Chrome, by Lucky Pulpit, became the all-time leading earner based in North
America when he won the Dubai World Cup in track-record time at Meydan.

Has anyone asked Victor Espinoza
about bringing about world peace, ending
hunger, turning lead into gold?
Because Espinoza the last 23 months
has done things scarcely to be believed
– winning two Kentucky Derbys, two
Preaknesses, one Triple Crown, a Breeders’ Cup Classic – and a Dubai World Cup.
And California Chrome, the horse that
took Espinoza to the top of this moun-
tain Mar. 26 at Meydan, added another
chapter to his fairy-tale career, setting a
track record and making short work of an
outstanding field while becoming the richest North American-based racehorse ever.
California Chrome won by 3 3/4 lengths
over Mubtaahij, and it didn’t even seem
that close, but Chrome’s beloved 76-yearold trainer, Art Sherman, a jockey for 23
years, wasn’t taking any chances.
“Oh I was riding that horse down the
lane!” Sherman said. “I felt like I was back
in the saddle again.”
While Sherman imagined himself into
a saddle, Espinoza worried he was losing
his actual one. The girth on California
Chrome’s saddled loosened at some point
in the race, and Espinoza’s seat had slid
considerably down Chrome’s barrel by the
time the race was run.
“I was just trying to keep my balance,”
Espinoza said. “I wasn’t really concerned
about it, but I was just looking forward.

‘Where’s the wire? The wire’s not coming
fast enough.’ ”
California Chrome crossed it, the crowd
roaring for the favorite. He galloped
out, was pulled up, at which point Espinoza dismounted, tightened the girth,
remounted, and rode slowly back with one
of the most famous horses in the world to
get his picture taken.
“After I won the Triple Crown, I had a
goal to win the Dubai World Cup,” Espinoza said. “I was second last year, and that
wasn’t very fun.”
The man hasn’t been second much. He’s
won five of the last six Triple Crown races,
and ended his 2015 season raising his arms
as American Pharoah ran out of the racing
world a brilliant Breeders’ Cup Classic
winner. Even as that was happening, California Chrome was in the early phases of
his comeback. Beaten into second in this
race last year at age 4 by shocking winner
Prince Bishop, California Chrome didn’t
race again in 2015. As Espinoza won the
Derby, California Chrome struggled to
adapt to life and training in England,
where his owners had directly sent him
after the World Cup. California Chrome
never adapted, didn’t race there, and after
a couple weeks at Arlington, where he
shipped coming back home, the plug was
pulled on his 2015 campaign.
Steve Coburn, the horse’s minority
owner, sold his share of Chrome to Taylor
Made Farm, where California Chrome
went to recuperate. Taylor Made stands
stallions, and Sherman wasn’t sure he’d
ever train his once-in-a-lifetime horse
again, but eventually the decision was
made to give California Chrome a 5-yearold campaign, one with two main objectives: the Dubai World Cup and the Breeders’ Cup.
One down, one to go.
The plan to send California Chrome
early to Dubai shortly after he won his
comeback race Jan. 9 in the San Pasqual
at Santa Anita bore rich fruit. An easy
handicap win over the World Cup’s 2,000meter distance here Feb. 26 had California
Chrome tuned for this race.
California Chrome broke crisply enough
from post 11 in the World Cup, but with
Mshawish going for the lead while two
paths off the rail and Special Fighter
stacked up outside him, California
Chrome was four wide going into the first
turn – just where Espinoza wanted him.
“I thought if I could hit the turn three or
four wide I’d be in good shape,” he said. “I
don’t want to go six or seven wide.”
California Chrome held his position
down the backstretch, lost ground again
on the second turn while three paths wide,
and after straightening for home, was
stoked for run by Espinoza. And he gave
plenty. California Chrome jumped on the
tiring leaders more than furlong out, hit
the front with relative ease, and steamed
home with the largest World Cup winning
margin since Well Armed’s 14-length
romp in 2009.
Alan Sherman came flying down the
path from the winner’s circle to meet him
with a whoop and a leap.

“You didn’t know a fat man could jump
that high, did you?” he said in victory’s
glow.
California Chrome also jumped to a new
level on this night. This was his first win
over older Grade 1 or Group 1 horses, and
easily his most important victory since the
Preakness nearly two years ago. He’d been
a fine, close third in the 2014 Breeders’
Cup, but after his lost 4-year-old season,
it seemed fair to wonder if Chrome – the
product of an improbable by-nothing-outof-nothing mating, with his flashy socks
and blaze, and his huge fan base – was
more hat than cattle. But he brought it in
the Dubai World Cup, running the fastest
2,000 meters of the two-year Meydan dirt
era, 2:01.83.
California Chrome is the best horse by
a country mile ever sired by Lucky Pulpit,
and as every Chromie knows, he’s out of
the Not For Love mare Love the Chase.
Martin and Coburn bred him in California. He ran his record to 12-3-1 from
21 starts, and the $6 million share of the
purse gave him $12,532,650 in earnings,
surpassing Curlin’s American record
$10,501,800. California Chrome, heavily
favored in U.S. betting, paid $4.40 to win.
California Chrome leaves Dubai on
Mar. 31, flies to Chicago for a brief quarantine, and then will be sent by van to
Taylor Made outside Lexington, Ky., for a
30-day rest. Plans aren’t set, but Sherman
suggested it was likely California Chrome
would race just twice before going to stud,
in the Pacific Classic at Del Mar and in the
Breeders’ Cup Classic at Santa Anita.
“He runs really well fresh,” Sherman
said.
Mubtaahij, trained to the minute by
Mike de Kock, ran easily his best race
among three this winter, hugging the
fence for most of the trip and running
on gamely for second, a neck in front of
Hoppertunity, who ran a very strong race
to finish third after settling in the rear and
winding up about six paths wide around
the far turn. Special Fighter, whose
course record Chrome broke, was a creditable fourth, while Frosted, the second
choice, got into a great stalking spot on
the outside, but came home a one-paced
fifth. Mshawish, the somewhat surprising
pacesetter, didn’t stay and faded to sixth,
and was followed by Candy Boy, Keen Ice,
Hokko Tarumae, Teletext, Vadamos, and
Gun Pit.
Mubtaahij, the runner-up, was eighth
in the Kentucky Derby and fourth in the
Belmont, and after acting up in the gate,
ran a strong enough race in the World Cup
3
that de Kock said his 4-year-old is likely
to come to the U.S. to try and win a Grade
1 at some point this year. What de Kock
doesn’t want is to bump into the flashy
chestnut again anytime soon.
“If California Chrome is staying west,
we’re going east,” De Kock said. “I want
to go to the opposite side of the world from
him if I can.”

It was not the breathtaking performance
like that of countryman Just a Way in
2014, but a Japanese horse, Real Steel, won
the $6 million Dubai Turf for the second
time in three years.
The Japanese, who love their racing and
were out in force at Meydan, had barely
finished celebrating Lani’s win in the UAE
Derby when Real Steel, overcoming a wide
draw under Ryan Moore, held off a solid
showing from Euro Charline to win the
Dubai Turf at Meydan by a half-length.
Tryster, the 8-5 favorite on the North
American tote board, pulled his usual
Silky Sullivan routine, dropping back to
last and coming with a furious run, but the
horses in front of him were far stronger
than the competition he’d buzzed past
twice earlier this meet, and he checked
in two lengths behind Euro Charline in
third.
Ertijaal improved for trainer Mike
de Kock and finished fourth, while the
Paddy Gallagher-trained, Californiabased Flamboyant was a respectable fifth.
Intilaaq, the race’s second favorite, acted
studdish before the race and never really
got involved, finishing seventh.
Real Steel has played second fiddle in
Japan to fellow 4-year-old Duramente,
who beat him in the Japanese Derby last
year and in a Group 2 prep race there for
the two horses’ Dubai adventure, but on
this night, when Duramente could only
finish second in the Sheema Classic, it was
Real Steel who wore the crown.
Trained by Yoshito Yahagi for the
Sunday Racing Company, the son of Deep
Impact out of Loves Me Only, by Storm
Cat, had run the best race of his life in
the Japanese St. Leger at 1 7/8 miles last
fall, but he had plenty of pace for the about
1 1/8-mile Dubai Turf.
CONTINUED
Breeding
Breaking from post 14, Moore and Real
Steel were forced to lose a bit of ground, but
they got into the two or three path around
the first turn. Moore allowed his mount
to race in the clear from fifth while three
paths off the rail down the backstretch,
guided him back into line behind cover
around the final bend, and then tipped the
horse out again to make his move.
Very Special had shaken off Ghaamer by
then, and as she’d done in the Balanchine
Stakes against Euro Charline, attempted
to win the race by opening a lead in upper
stretch. But Real Steel would have none of
that, attacking with pace and reeling in
Very Special inside the final furlong. It was
Euro Charline, ridden patiently by Frankie
Dettori, who burst from midpack to issue a
challenge, briefly looking like she’d make
things close, but Real Steel had too much
run for her.
“We rode her to finish, but the winner
was too good for us,” Dettori said.
Real Steel won for just the third time in
nine starts, while the $3.6 million winner’s
share of the purse swelled his bankroll to
more than $5.5 million.
“He’s a beautiful horse who’s got lots of
quality,” said Moore, who won his second
Dubai Turf.
Flamboyant,
trained
by
Patrick
Gallagher, couldn’t threaten the winner,
but performed well by the low standards
set by Americans in Dubai turf-route races
to get fifth of 15.
“To come halfway across the world and
run like this, it was nice,” said jockey Brice
Blanc. “He proved he can run with this
kind of horse.”

It took Postponed 12 starts to win his first
Group 1 race, but he didn’t waste much
time getting his second.
Jockey Andrea Atzeni was on the right
horse in the $6 million Dubai Sheema Classic at Meydan Racecourse on Mar. 26, and
he gave Postponed a perfect ride. Atzeni
and Postponed drafted behind a horse
while perched two wide, tipped three deep
turning into the homestretch, and went on
to a two-length victory over the fine Japanese horse Duramente.
“It was very straightforward today,”
Atzeni said. “He traveled brilliantly and
was in a nice position all the way. I knew it
would take a good horse to beat him today.”
The best horse behind him on the night,
Duramente, might have gotten closer
had he not dislodged his right-front shoe
shortly before the start. Duramente was
taken off the track to be attended by the
track farrier, but the shoe could not be
repaired, and Duramente was forced
to race barefoot on that foot. He ran on
strongly from the back of the field, chasing
home the winner, and could well have done
better if fully shod.
“He didn’t shove like always does, and
he was trying to change his [leads] many
times, and this isn’t usual for him,” jockey
Mirco Demuro said.
Duramente headed an excellent showing
from the three Japanese runners in the
Sheema Classic, with Last Impact third
and One and Only fifth. Between them
came Highland Reel, who set the pace but
could not quicken with Postponed in the
stretch.
“He ran a very good race, my horse,” said
Highland Reel’s jockey, Ryan Moore. “He
ran against the front two who had runs,
and he’ll come on from it.”
Postponed’s most recent start had come
in the Group 2 City of Gold here March
5, and while no City of Gold winner had
returned to win the Sheema Classic, Postponed was no typical City of Gold winner.
A Group 2 winner at 4, he finished a close
third in the Group 1 Tattersalls Gold Cup
last summer before getting his first Group
1 victory in the King George VI and Queen
Elizabeth Stakes on July 26 at Ascot. Postponed won that race on soft turf on a European-style course, and showed his versatility in the Sheema Classic by performing
just as well on a flat, fast-playing track. His
time of 2:26.97 was a course record.
“We were hopeful he’d perform like
this, but you never know,” said Roger
Varian, who took over Postponed’s training when his owner, Sheikh Mohammed
Obaid, moved 35 horses from trainer Luca
Cumani late last fall.
“We’ll get him home, keep him in mind
for the 1 1/2-mile races that are obvious
targets.”

Postponed has won 7 of 15 starts – including 5 of 6 at 1 1/2 miles – and the $3.6 million
winner’s share of the Sheema Classic was
more than double what Postponed previously had earned in his career. The handsome bay horse is a son of Dubawi out of the
Dubai Destination mare Ever Rigg. He was
bred in Ireland by St. Albans Bloodstock.

Muarrab, a fixture at Dubai tracks in
recent years, scored a mild upset to edge
the star Florida sprinter X Y Jet in the
$2 million Golden Shaheen Sprint at
Meydan Racecourse on Mar. 26.
The result was only decided in the final
strides.
Muarrab, who paid $15.80 to win in American pools, finished a neck in front of favored
X Y Jet after the two fought through the
stretch together. A patient ride from jockey
Paul Hanagan was arguably the difference.
Hanagan kept Muarrab off the pace
while X Y Jet and Rich Tapestry dueled
for the lead. Rich Tapestry faded in early
stretch when Muarrab moved alongside
X Y Jet. The two were inseparable for about
a furlong until Muarrab took the lead in
the last 50 yards.
“He’s such a star, this horse,” Hanagan
said. “They went hard [from the start], and
it suited him to sit. The other horse was
very hard to pass.”
X Y Jet was favored in the Golden
Shaheen, which was run at six furlongs on
dirt. X Y Jet looked like a winner in early
stretch.
“I got beaten fair and square, but he’s run
his heart out,” jockey Emisael Jaramillo
said. “There was no letup from the go, and
there was no chance to get a breather into
him. He still managed to run like a champion. He was very tough to pass, and it was
only close to the wire that the winner got
past.”
Morawij, a 50-1 outsider with British
bookmakers, finished third, followed
by Reynaldothewizard, Super Jockey,
Confrontation, Rich Tapestry, Domineer,
and Master Kochanwong. Kifaah was
pulled up while racing at the back of the
field.
Muarrab was timed in 1:10.59.
Aside from X Y Jet, Confrontation was the
only runner in the field with recent American form. A 6-year-old Kentucky-bred gelding, Confrontation was second in the Grade
3 Westchester Stakes at Belmont Park last
May. Trained by Kiaran McLaughlin,
Confrontation won the Firebreak Stakes at
a mile at Meydan on Feb. 4 in his first start
since June.
Muarrab has won 13 of 24 starts and
earned $1,655,942. A 7-year-old Britishbred gelding by Oasis Dream, Muarrab
began his career racing on turf in England
but struggled to compete. In the UAE,
Muarrab thrived in lower-quality races at
Jebel Ali Racecourse, winning eight races
there from 2013 to last November.
In his last five starts, Muarrab has won
three stakes, including the Group 3 Mahab
Al Shimaal at six furlongs at Meydan on
March 5.
Muarrab races for Sheikh Hamdan Bin
Rashid al Maktoum and trainer Musabah
Al Muhairi. They teamed earlier on the
program to win the $1 million Kahayla
Classic for Arabians with AF Mathmoon.
X Y Jet, a 4-year-old gelding by Kantharos, has won 6 of 15 starts. Trained by Jorge
Navarro, X Y Jet had won three consecutive stakes going into the Golden Shaheen,
including the Grade 3 Gulfstream Park
Sprint on Feb. 27.
X Y Jet is co-owned by Rockingham
Ranch and Gelfenstein Farm. The gelding is scheduled to be sent to trainer Peter
Miller in California upon his return to the
United States, Miller said this month.

There is something about the Al Quoz
Sprint that loves a graybeard. Sole Power
won the straight-course turf dash at age 8
last year, and while he could only muster
a 10th-place finish this year, Buffering
scored a three-quarter-length win over
Ertijaal at age, say, 8 1/2.
Buffering, Australian-bred and owned,
is an 8-year-old on Southern Hemisphere
time but 9 on the Northern Hemisphere
breeding calendar. But spare the details
– he’s no spring chicken. This was Buffering’s 52nd career start in addition to being
his best one.
“He’s such a warrior,” said winning rider
Damian Browne. “He’s getting better with
age.”
Buffering began his career in 2010 and
raced regularly against the great Black
Caviar as well as the second banana of the
Black Caviar era, Hay List. No wonder,
then, it took Buffering 18 starts before he
won a Group 1.
But since that breakthrough in October
2013, Buffering has been a steady Group 1
performer, though almost exclusively in
Australia. He shipped to Hong Kong two
Decembers ago and could only finish sixth
in the Hong Kong Sprint, but beat two of
Hong Kong’s best today, Peniaphobia and
Not Listenin’Tome, as well as the 10 others
he lined up against.
It was Peniaphobia who went out to lead
down the five-furlong Meydan straighta-
way, pursued by Buffering and Ertijaal and
Lady Shipman on the far outside. Browne
started asking with a quarter-mile or so to
run, and Buffering asserted himself in the
final half-furlong, leading home the sort of
bunched finish one would expect in a short
race of this quality.
Ertijaal, affirming the quality at which
he hinted in lower-level races this meet,
tried hard but settled for second, a neck
better than Peniaphobia, who had threequarters of a length on Jungle Cat. Lady
Shipman could not carry her one-turn
American sprint form to the Meydan
straightway, and finished seventh.
Buffering, by Mossman out of the Anabaa
mare Action Annie, was timed in 56.34
seconds while winning for the 20th time.
Robert Heathcote trains him.

Lani became the first Japanese horse to
win the Group 2, $2 million UAE Derby on
Mar. 26 and for his next trick will try to
become the first Japanese horse to win the
Kentucky Derby.
Lani overcame a wide trip in the UAE
Derby and beat the favored Polar River
by three-quarters of a length in the
1 3/16-mile dirt fixture for Northern
Hemisphere 3-year-olds and Southern
Hemisphere 4-year-olds. Lani is a nominee to the Kentucky Derby, will easily
make the field for the race with the 100
qualifying points he earned by winning
the UAE Derby, and his connections have
every intention of running in the race.
Trainer Mikio Matsunaga said through
an interpreter after the race that plans
already had been laid for Lani to travel to
Churchill Downs, and that the colt would
depart Dubai for the U.S. in less than one
week.
Lani, a bulky, gray son of Tapit and out
of Heavenly Romance, by Sunday Silence,
is a temperamental colt, and he was slow
away from the gate, racing well behind the
7
second-to-last horse into the first turn of
the UAE Derby. But in a move reminiscent
of Mirco Dimuro’s ride on Dubai World
Cup winner Victoire Pisa, jockey Yutaka
Take guided Lani six or seven paths off the
rail turning into the Meydan backstretch
and let Lani race up close to the leaders,
Vale Dori and Yu Change.
Lani got into the 2 or 3 path around the
far turn and still had work to do 1 1/2
furlongs out as Yu Change continued to
lead, but Yu Change weakened late while
Lani stayed on, passing the leader in the
final 100 yards and holding clear favorite
Polar River. His time on a fast track of
1:58.41 was 0.06 seconds slower than
Mubtaahij’s clocking in his blowout win
in the race last year. Mubtaahij would go
on to finish eighth in the Kentucky Derby.
Polar River, taking her first loss after
four wins, had a tough trip. She was
trapped in behind Vale Dori for most of the
race, finding herself in an uncomfortable
position for the first time in her career.
Jockey Pat Dobbs waited and waited for
room and said he didn’t have the horse
to get through a seam that opened at the
three-sixteenths pole, instead swinging
wide, making some headway in the final
furlong, but falling short in the end.
Yu Change finished a neck behind Polar
River, with Vale Dori another half-length
back in fourth. The California shipper
Frank Conversation finished last of seven.
Lani won for the third time in six starts
and scored for the first time at the group
level and at a distance beyond one mile. He
was bred in Kentucky by the North Hills
Co. and is owned by Yoko Maeda.

Marathon races come naturally for
Vazirabad.
In the $1 million Dubai Gold Cup at
Meydan Racecourse on Mar. 26, Vazirabad
extended his winning streak to six races
with a hard-fought win in the Group 2
race at two miles. The Dubai Gold Cup was
Vazirabad’s first start outside of France
and the longest race of his career.
The 4-year-old gelding overcame a troubled flight from France earlier in the week
and a slow start to win the richest race of
his eight-race career.
Ridden by Christophe Soumillon,
Vazirabad broke slowly and raced toward
the back of a field of 11 for the first 1 1/2
miles. Certerach and Big Orange raced at
the front, clear of the chasing pack for the
first mile, before the field began to draw
closer together in the last half-mile.
Soumillon guided Vazirabad to the
outside of rivals on the turn and moved
into contention with a wide rally in early
stretch. Big Orange, who finished fifth
in the Melbourne Cup in Australia last
November, took the lead in early stretch
but was challenged on his outside by
Vazirabad. Through the final furlong,
Vazirabad had the better of Big Orange,
finishing a neck in front of his rival.
“His main quality is that he has a big turn
of foot, and we’re not afraid to use it,” said
winning trainer Alain de Royer-Dupre.
“He was a little tired at the end; perhaps he
came too soon.”
Big Orange finished 4 3/4 lengths in
front of Haafaguinea, who was followed by
Suegioo, Meadow Creek, Manatee, Tellina,
Neo Black Dia, Star Empire, Certerach and
Paradise. There were no American-based
runners or American-bred runners in the
field.
Prior to the race, de Royer-Dupre said
that Vazirabad was unsettled for part of
the flight to Dubai earlier this week and
sustained cuts on his head.
Vazirabad races for the Aga Khan.
By Manduro, Vazirabad has won 6 of 8
starts and earned $1,024,025. His six-race
winning streak includes four group stakes,
most notably the Group 1 Prix Royal-Oak
at 1 15/16 miles at Saint-Cloud last October. Earlier that month, Vazirabad won the
Group 2 Prix Chaudenay at 1 7/8 miles at
Longchamp on the weekend of the Prix de
l’Arc de Triomphe.

Doug Watson walked out of the Meydan
winner’s circle after the Godolphin Mile,
did a quick local TV hit, then whirled,
slightly flustered, looking for assistance.
He spotted John Ferguson of Godolphin,
walked up to him, and said, “John, who do I
talk to? I’ve never won one of these things!”
Well, Watson, the American expatriate
and onetime Kiaran McLaughlin assistant here, not only won his first race on a
Dubai World Cup card, he pulled the rare
feat of sweeping the top three placings. One
Man Band, leading all the way from post 1,
was much the best, setting a fast pace and
never looking back, as the Watson-trained
Faulkner edged the Watson-trained Cool
Cowboy for a trifecta sweep.
One Man Band won by 4 3/4 lengths and
ran 1,600 meters in 1:35.21, a track record.
Watson said several days ago that
all three of his runners in the Grade 2,
$1 million Godolphin Mile were live, and
he was dead on, but things went less well
for his former boss, as the McLaughlintrained Marking, the favorite, ran below
his best form and finished fourth, beaten
almost 10 lengths.
“He’s still immature mentally,” said
jockey James Doyle. “He missed the [break]
again and then couldn’t take the kickback.”
One Man Band is a one-way horse – the
lead or nothing. But that style perfectly
suited the way the Meydan dirt track was
playing, at least early on this card, the sun
still far from setting on a hot day. He did
not break on the lead, but Sam Hitchcock,
also winning his first World Cup card race,
quickly put him on the lead, guiding him
just in front of Marking to get to the rail as
the one-mile starting chute linked with the
course proper.
From there, nothing much happened,
though One Man Band carved out a
demanding pace that left his chasers struggling. Nothing ever really got close to him,
the only battle being for second, as Faulkner
came out to nip the chasing Cool Cowboy.
One Man Band, owned by Sheikh bin
Mohammed al Maktoum, is a 5-year-old
Irish-bred by Pivotal and out of a Cape Cross
mare. Bred for turf, he has taken beautifully to the Meydan dirt track and has eight
wins in 15 starts.

For Gun Runner and Mo Tom, the Louisiana Derby on Mar. 26 played out like the
Risen Star last month. For Gun Runner, it
was a joyous sequel. For Mo Tom, another
Nightmare on Gentilly Blvd.
Gun Runner ($9.80), making full use of
his tactical speed and instant acceleration, completed a sweep of the two biggest
Kentucky Derby preps at Fair Grounds by
rolling to a 4 1/2-length victory in the Grade
2, $1 million Louisiana Derby, a result that
thrilled his trainer, Steve Asmussen.
“It’s extremely exciting,” Asmussen said
in the winner’s circle, surrounded by his
wife and three sons. “He’s a very athletic
horse, handy, with a good temperament,
and he stayed on to the wire.”
Mo Tom, who has a powerful late kick,
was favored off his rough trip in the Risen
Star last month. Once again, he ran into
a roadblock while trying to rally in the
stretch with jockey Corey Lanerie and
wound up fourth, one place worse than the
Risen Star, a result that left his trainer,
Tom Amoss, fuming.
“Corey’s going to have to explain that
ride,” Amoss said. “It’s beyond my understanding. He was locked and loaded, so
why he chose the most dangerous route is
beyond me. I flashed back to all the work
we’ve done with him. It’s like being an
eyewitness to your kid being beaten up at
the playground. He’s got such a fine move.
Just go around.”
That was the ecstasy and the agony of
the 102nd Louisiana Derby. Gun Runner
got a first prize of $600,000, plus 100 points
toward a berth in the Kentucky Derby May
7, which will be his next start. Even with
the loss, Mo Tom likely has accumulated
enough points to also get into the Derby,
but Amoss – a native of New Orleans – was
denied his first victory in a race he deeply
covets.
Gun Runner had an ideal trip under Florent Geroux. He was third, tracking pacesetter Candy My Boy from along the inside
through the first six furlongs, then moved
in a flash to attack Candy My Boy midway
on the far turn.
“He’s super athletic,” Geroux said.
“He’s got a lot of gears,” said Scott Blasi,
Asmussen’s top assistant.
Gun Runner put daylight on his rivals
in upper stretch and was never threatened through the lane, crossing the line
in 1:51.06 for 1 1/8 miles on the fast main
track. By comparison, the New Orleans
Handicap for older horses earlier in the
day was won by the longshot S’maverlous
in 1:50.06, exactly one second faster.
The 30-1 shot Tom’s Ready, like Mo Tom
owned by Gayle Benson but trained by
Dallas Stewart, rallied into second at
midstretch and maintained that position,
finishing 1 1/4 lengths in front of Dazzling
Gem, who beat a fast-closing Mo Tom by a
neck for third.
Mo Tom was last the first half-mile of the
race, began a strong rally toward the end
of the far turn, was taken inside in upper
stretch, and twice was forced to steady
when caught behind the tiring Candy My
Boy.
Forevamo was fifth and was followed, in
order, by Candy My Boy, Greenpointcrusader, Conquest Windycity, Uncle Walter,
and Battery.
Gun Runner, a 3-year-old colt by Candy
Ride, has won four times in five starts,
his lone loss a fourth-place finish in the
Kentucky Jockey Club last fall on a sloppy,
sealed track at Churchill Downs. He did
win first time out against maidens at
Churchill Downs on a fast track.
Asmussen trains Gun Runner for Ron
and Joan Winchell’s Winchell Thoroughbreds and the Three Chimneys Farm of
Goncalo Torrealba.
“He’s got talent,” Asmussen said. “What I
love is how fast he is.”
And, no doubt, he loves Gun Runner’s
ability to stay out of trouble.

S’maverlous had been a sprinter for
most of his career before he was claimed
by Mike Maker, who this meet at Fair
Grounds finally sent him around two
turns. That move has taken S’maverlous
to a new level, and he reached his highest point yet on Mar. 26 with a 20-1 upset
victory in the Grade 2, $400,000 New
Orleans Handicap for older horses.
10
S’maverlous ($42.40), showing more
speed than in recent starts, stalked pacesetter Coup de Grace through the early
going, kicked away in upper stretch,
and rolled to a two-length victory while
well clear of the bumping that took place
behind him nearing the wire.
Jessica’s Star, a 13-1 shot, beat International Star by a half-length for second,
with 2-1 favorite Eagle a nose farther
back in fourth. But the stewards ruled
that Jessica’s Star had interfered with
fifth-place finisher Majestic Harbor near
the sixteenth pole, and they disqualified
him to fifth, promoting International Star
to second, Eagle to third, and Majestic
Harbor to fourth.
As a result, Maker swept the exacta, as
he also trains International Star.
S’maverlous completed 1 1/8 miles on
the fast main track in 1:50.06. He has won
eight times in 20 starts, is 3 for 7 for Maker,
and has won his last two starts, both at
Fair Grounds, both going two turns. He
won a second-level allowance race on
March 3.
That day, S’maverlous came from
seventh in the nine-horse field, but he was
forwardly placed this time under Jose
Lezcano.
“He usually makes one run, but I didn’t
want to handcuff Jose,” Maker said. “The
horse placed himself. Jose rode a smart
race.”
Maker claimed S’maverlous for $32,000
for the Gata Racing Stable of John Huber.
S’maverlous has earned $273,884 this year
alone, quite the return on investment.
S’maverlous, age 6, is a gelding by Tiz
Wonderful. Maker said he’d go for an even
richer payday next month in the $1.25
million Charles Town Classic.

Five races in a row, Land Over Sea had
faced Songbird, only to lose every time,
albeit usually in respectable fashion.
On Mar. 26, with no Songbird to chase,
Land Over Sea showed she knows how

to win when she drew off as the favorite in
defeating seven other 3-year-old fillies in
the 49th running of the Grade 2, $400,000
Fair Grounds Oaks on the Louisiana Derby
undercard.
“Once I got to the three-eighths pole,
we were third and in the clear on the
outside,” said John Velazquez, the Hall of
Fame jockey who was aboard Land Over
Sea for the familiar owner-trainer team of
Reddam Racing and trainer Doug O’Neill.
“I was like, ‘Okay, it’s all her now.’ Down
the lane I think she showed the quality of
filly she’s been chasing in California.”
Midnight on Oconee led for the first five
furlongs of the 1 1/16-mile race, pressed by
Adore, who took over midway through the
final turn. Past the furlong pole, Adore still
clung to the lead, but after nine whacks of
the whip from Velazquez, it was all over,
as Land Over Sea flew past to win by 4 1/2
lengths.
Dream Dance, a 23-1 outsider, rallied late
up the rail to get second by a neck over a
tiring Adore. It was another 3 3/4 lengths
back to Northwest Tale.
Land Over Sea, a Kentucky-bred chestnut by Bellamy Road, returned $5.60 to win
after finishing in 1:44.74 over a fast track.
Her five losses to Songbird all came after
a maiden triumph last July and included
seconds in the Grade 1 Chandelier, Grade
2 Las Virgenes, and Grade 3 Santa Ysabel.
“It was great to get a confidence win like
this,” said Jack Sisterson, O’Neill’s assistant who accompanied Land Over Sea from
their Southern California base. “A lot of
the credit goes to the filly herself. She’s got
such a will to win.”
The victory was worth $244,000, an also
gave her 100 eligibility points toward the
May 6 Kentucky Oaks. The undefeated
Songbird is the strong early favorite for
that race.
Six of the last 11 runnings of the Fair
Grounds Oaks has produced the winner of
the Kentucky Oaks, with Untapable (2014)
being the most recent.

For Take the Stand, the plan going into
the Mar. 26 Mervin Muniz Memorial Handicap at Fair Grounds wasn’t to go for the
early lead. Naturally, Take the Stand led
all the way to win the Grade 2, $300,000
turf race by 1 1/4 lengths – and set a course
record, to boot.
Ridden by Edgar Prado for owner Earle
Mack and trainer Bill Mott, Take the Stand
ran about 1 1/8 miles in 1:47.80. The previous record, 1:48.18, was set in the Muniz
last year by Chocolate Ride, who was the
2-1 favorite in the field of 10 older horses.
World Approval made a strong late run
to finish second, 1 1/2 lengths in front
of third-place Closing Bell, Mott’s other
entrant. Chocolate Ride finished fourth.
“We weren’t really looking for the lead,’’
said Rodolphe Brisset, assistant to Mott.
“I think he just took [Prado] there like a
happy horse. Then he kind of re-broke.’’
Take the Stand, a 5-year-old Argentinebred son of Not For Sale, was coming off a
runner-up finish by a neck behind Reload
on Feb. 13 in the Grade 3 Tampa Bay Handicap. Take the Stand’s odds that day were
61-1; in the Muniz, he paid $18 to win.
In the Tampa Bay race, Take the Stand
was racing for the first time since November, and Prado saw positive signs.
“He was happy last time,’’ Prado said.
“He was very game when that horse came
to him.’’
At Fair Grounds, Take the Stand was
primed and ready. He broke sharply and
set a solid pace. With Roman Approval and
Chocolate Ride in closest pursuit, Take the
Stand ran the first quarter-mile in 23.54
seconds, the half in 47.59, and six furlongs
in 1:10.98.
Chocolate Ride, carrying 124 pounds,
eight more than Take the Stand, lacked the
stretch punch he showed when winning
the Colonel E. R. Bradley and Fair Grounds
Handicap earlier in the meet.
Prado said that he could tell on the final
turn that Take the Stand would be tough to
catch. “He was pricking his ears,’’ Prado
said.
World Approval raced in seventh place
for the first half-mile before steadily gaining ground.
“The winner was on the lead, loose,’’
said Julien Leparoux, who rode World
Approval. “He got the first jump on us. But
[World Approval] ran a very nice race.’’

A tiny gap between horses was all Tuttipaesi needed in the stretch in the $200,000
Santa Ana Stakes for fillies and mares at
Santa Anita on Mar. 26. Guided into that
space by jockey Chris DeCarlo, Tuttipaesi
responded to storm to the front and win
the Grade 2 Santa Ana by a neck over
Glory.
The win gave Tuttipaesi the most prestigious win of her career and gave the
47-year-old DeCarlo a win in his first
mount at Santa Anita.
DeCarlo had Tuttipaesi last with three
furlongs to go, showing patience aboard
the 6-year-old mare before finding
running room between runner-up Glory
and third-place finisher Fresh Feline.
“It was tight, but there was a little separation at the eighth pole,” DeCarlo said.
“She put her head in there. She’s a fighter
and those are the kind you want. That’s all
she needed.”
Tuttipaesi ($7.40) ran 1 1/8 miles on turf
in 1:48.82 in recording her third stakes win
in her last four starts. She won the Suffolk
Distaff Turf Stakes at Suffolk Downs in
October and the South Beach Stakes at
Gulfstream Park in December. Trained
by Bill Mott for the Valor Ladies partnership, Tuttipaesi has won 7 of 17 starts and
earned $495,929.
Tuttipaesi was at the back of the field of
five for the first six furlongs of the Santa
Ana. Her Emmynency, the 4-5 favorite, set
a modest pace of 24.50 seconds for the opening quarter-mile and 48.51 for a half-mile
despite ducking in sharply from the inside
post shortly after the start.
Her Emmynency jumped so far to the
inside in the first 100 yards that jockey
Joe Talamo had to correct her direction
rapidly to avoid getting shut off coming
from the main track onto the turf course.
“It surprised me a lot,” Talamo said. “She
didn’t give me any indication that would
happen.”
Talamo thought Her Emmynency had
recovered from the incident until the field
reached the turn and he began to urge his
mount.
“The fractions were easy,” Talamo said.
“It would have been one thing if she would
have run off. I had a lot of horse until the
three-eighths pole.”
Glory, a 7-2 shot, led in the stretch and
finished three-quarters of a length in
front of Fresh Feline, who was followed by
Nashoba’s Gold and Her Emmynency.
Nancy From Nairobi, the winner of
consecutive optional claimers on turf in
February and early March, was scratched
on the morning of the race after a bout
with colic, trainer John Sadler said. Nancy
From Nairobi was the 5-2 second choice on
the morning line. Sadler said Nancy From
Nairobi was treated at his stable.
Tuttipaesi, an Irish-bred by Clodovil,
has won five stakes. Tuttipaesi began her
career in Italy where she won two stakes.
She arrived in the United States in late 2012
and was second in the Grade 1 Ashland
Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at Keeneland
in April 2013 when trained by Graham
Motion. She joined Mott’s stable in 2014.
