By David Grening 2343 Alexandria Dr., Suite 305 Lexington, KY 40504 3 After driving through the night from Louisville, Ky., trainer Billy Gowan arrived in New York at around 2 a.m. Eastern Tuesday and, shortly thereafter, was reunited with his 3-yearold colt Ride On Curlin, whom he hadn’t seen since the morning after the Preakness Stakes. Any fatigue Gowan may have had quickly dissipated after watching Ride On Curlin train over Belmont’s main track in preparation for the June 7 Belmont Stakes. Ride On Curlin, the runner-up to California Chrome in the Preakness, galloped two miles, traveling his second mile at what is commonly referred to as a “two-minute lick” – two minutes per mile. But Ride On Curlin went significantly quicker than that, covering his second mile in 1:51.36 from the 7 1/2-furlong pole to a sixteenth past the finish line. Daily Racing Form clocked the last half-mile of that gallop in 54.05 seconds. “We haven’t been doing much with him,” Barbara D. Livingston Gowan said. “Do that one time and get one work in him, and that’s about all he needs.” Other than Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner California Chrome, Ride On Curlin is the only horse who is expected to compete in all three legs of the Triple Crown this year. His energy level remains high, as he demonstrated when he walked onto the track Tuesday morning, rearing up three times, with exercise rider Bryan Beccia holding on for dear life. “He’s letting me know he’s still in charge,” said Beccia, who was then accompanied by a stable pony back to the 4 1/2-furlong pole before Ride On Curlin started to train. Ride On Curlin gradually grew stronger as he galloped through the stretch the first time before Beccia began to let him pick it up more straightening away down the backside. Into the far turn, one could have thought Ride On Curlin was beginning an official workout. “He goes into the turn, he switches to his left lead, you feel those muscles building up and feel CONTINUED >> BACK TO TOP STORIES them gears kicking in,” Beccia said. “He’s ready to do something.” Back at the barn after the training session, Ride On Curlin still had plenty of energy as Gowan walked him around the shed. Physically, Ride On Curlin does not give the impression of a horse coming off two Triple Crown races. “I’m not really surprised,” Gowan said. “He’s one tough horse. The night of the Preakness, he ate all his oats. The next morning, he’s hollering for his breakfast. He’s a tough horse. He carries his weight; he’s carried it all winter. I would have been surprised if he didn’t, to tell you the truth.” Ride On Curlin is stabled in the same barn as California Chrome, just two stalls away. Ride On Curlin came out of his stall at 7 a.m., after California Chrome had already galloped two miles, been bathed, and put away. California Chrome galloped stronger than he had on any previous morning since he arrived here May 20. He usually loafs for at least a mile before picking it up gradually around the half-mile or three-eighths pole. On Tuesday, he picked it up at around the seven-furlong pole. Coming through the stretch, exercise rider Willie Delgado was heard to say, “Settle down, settle down,” to his chestnut charge. “Today’s the first time that he actually got locked on early,” Delgado said. “Down the backside, I was kind of cussing at him a little bit, like, ‘Slow down, you dummy. What are you doing?’ But he’s doing it, and he’s looking around like, ‘Okay, I’m ready, okay.’ I’m just hoping this continues going like this so maybe he can win the Triple Crown.” Delgado is pretty confident that’s going to happen. “This is the strongest I felt about him winning a race,” he said. Alan Sherman, assistant to his father, trainer Art Sherman, said he had an inkling that California Chrome was going to be more aggressive Tuesday. “He was feeling really good today,” Sherman said. “He was dragging me around the shed before he went to the track. He’s on it.” California Chrome is scheduled to work at Belmont Park at 8:45 a.m. Saturday, according to Alan Sherman. Grade 2 Peter Pan Stakes winner Tonalist, who worked Sunday and jogged Monday, had a steady 1 3/8-mile gallop shortly before 6 a.m. Tuesday. “I thought he looked good,” trainer Christophe Clement said. Social Inclusion, who arrived here Sunday, also galloped over the main track shortly after 7 a.m., getting a little hot on a warm, summer-like morning. His connections still have not decided whether he will run in the Belmont, the Grade 1 Metropolitan Handicap, or the Grade 2 Woody Stephens Stakes. Commanding Curve, the Kentucky Derby runner-up, is scheduled to arrive at Belmont on Thursday on a flight from Kentucky. When he arrives, 10 of the 12 possible Belmont starters will be here, with Samraat just eight miles away at Aqueduct. Tuesday afternoon, a potential 12th Belmont starter joined the fray when Spendthrift Farm announced that Medal Count would also point to the race. The Dynaformer colt won the Grade 3 Transylvania Stakes and finished second in the Grade 1 Blue Grass Stakes leading up to the Kentucky Derby, where he finished eighth. Medal Count drilled five furlongs in 59.40 seconds on Saturday at Churchill Downs for trainer Dale Romans, fastest of 42 timed workouts at the distance. 2013 AMERICAN RACING MANUAL A must-have for every racing enthusiast! Stud plans have not been finalized. Intense Holiday was vanned off the track after breezing the morning of May 25 at Belmont Park, and was diagnosed with a condylar fracture to his right front leg. He underwent surgery, performed by equine surgeon Dr. Patti Hogan, the following day. The fracture was mended, but retirement was advised. “You never get used to this stuff,” said Starlight Racing co-managing partner Jack Wolf, who was at Belmont Park the morning the injury occurred. “It’s disappointing, but the horse did not seem to be in much distress right after the injury and we’re happy that they were able to repair the injury to the extent that they could. He’s a good horse – a talented horse – who has provided us with some thrilling finishes. But whether they’re worth $5,000 or $5 million, this is always a bitter pill to swallow.” Intense Holiday stamped himself as a 3-year-old of note earlier in the year with a nose victory in the Grade 2 Risen Star Stakes, followed by a runner-up effort in the Grade 2 Louisiana Derby. He finished 12th in the Kentucky Derby on May 3, and, following that outing, underwent an extensive post-race exam before returning to New York to aim for the final leg of the Triple Crown. “This injury was more frustrating than most because, after a disappointing finish in the Kentucky Derby, Intense Holiday underwent a thorough veterinary exam, including nuclear scintigraphy and digital X-rays,” said Dr. Foster Northrop, Starlight’s primary veterinarian. “All of his results came back clean and he was shipped to Belmont Park where, by all accounts, he had been training very well.” Intense Holiday won two of nine races and earned $551,900. Starlight Racing is currently in negotiations with several stal- 5 Barbara D. Intense Holiday was purchased by Starlight for $380,000 at the 2012 Keeneland September yearling sale. The colt is a son of the late Harlan’s Holiday, who Starlight campaigned to multiple Grade 1 victories. Intense Holiday is the lone winner from two starters out of the Unbridled’s Song mare Intensify. Out of Grade 1-placed Her She Shawklit, Intensify is a-half sister to multiple graded stakes winner and millionaire Crafty Shaw, and to stakes winner Her She Kisses. Her She Shawklit is a-half sister to graded stakes winner Mr. Shawklit, stakes winner Shawklit Man, Grade 1-placed Shawklit Won, and stakes producer Shawklit Delight. BACK TO TOP STORIES Headline3 Shared Belief on track for strong second half of year By Chuck Dybdal Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer said Tuesday that Shared Belief appeared to have come out of his Monday comeback victory fine, and that he is in the process of plotting out the remainder of the Candy Ride gelding’s 3-year-old campaign. Making his first start since December, Shared Belief defeated older horses by 4 1/4 lengths in a six-furlong allowance race on the Tapeta main track at Golden Gate Fields. After the race and again Tuesday, Hollendorfer talked of ending the year strong. “The Travers [Stakes] is a race somebody could point for,” he said regarding a possible long-term goal for Shared Belief. “I don’t know if he’d be ready for that, and we want him to be around at the end of the year.” Asked if he had any specific plans for Shared Belief’s next start, Hollendorfer said: “I don’t know. There are a lot of races available.” Shared Belief ran the six furlongs Monday in 1:09.78 and earned a 96 Beyer Speed Figure. Last year’s champion juvenile male, he hadn’t raced since winning the Grade 1 CashCall Futurity at Hollywood Park in December and spent the first part of this year battling a foot abscess and quarter crack. Shared Belief went right to the lead Monday, covering the first quarter in 23.32. He covered the final quarter-mile in the same time. “He finished good and strong and never got leg-weary,” jockey Russell Baze said after the race. “I could have gone five lengths faster. He was blowing a little bit after the wire, but after going 1:09 and change on this track, he should have been. He just moves so smooth. We were going 23 and change, but he might have been going 25, he was doing it so easily.” Hollendorfer expected a good performance and was only surprised that Shared Belief won in wire-to-wire fashion. “My theory is really good horses can run short or long,” he said. “The only doubt some people may have had was he had one three-quarter work, but he’d been working in company and had always galloped out well. If he hadn’t, I wouldn’t have entered him.” Shared Belief, now four for four, won his 6 Shigeki Kikkawa Champion Shared Belief, shown in 2013, returned from a five-month absence in style on Memorial Day with a 4 1/4-length win at Golden Gate. debut by seven lengths at Golden Gate, and Hollendorfer brought him back here to train for his comeback. Hollendorfer and his partners – Jim Rome’s Jungle Racing, KMN Racing, Jason Litt, Alex Solis II, and George Todaro – bought Shared Belief following his debut. “I got no pressure at all from my partners, and I really appreciate that,” Hollendorfer said. BACK TO TOP STORIES headline 4 Breeder of the Week: Patricia Pavlish By DRF Breeding staff Fire With Fire rallied forcefully between horses in deep stretch to post a neck win in the Grade 2 Charles Whittingham Stakes Saturday at Santa Anita, taking the first edition of that 1 1/4-mile event at the Arcadia, Calif., track after it moved from the now-shuttered Hollywood Park. The 6-year-old Distorted Humor gelding picked up his second graded stakes in his last three starts, adding to his reputation as a leading contender in the West Coast male turf division, and also to his résumé as one of the best horses bred by Ohiobased Patricia Pavlish. Fire With Fire improved his career record to seven wins in 32 starts and over $655,000 in earnings. The consistent runner also has amassed eight seconds and five thirds, and has made his way through a host of venues across the U.S. during his racing days. A $290,000 purchase at the 2009 Keeneland September yearling sale, Fire With Fire began his career for WinStar Farm and Bill Mott before being sold as a racing or stallion prospect for $190,000 at the 2011 Keeneland November sale. Later gelded, he has performed consistently since then for owner David Heerensperger and trainer Neil Drysdale, but has found another level this year, taking the Grade 2 San Luis Rey Stakes in March and finishing second by a head to eventual Whittingham third Quick Casablanca in the Grade 3 Quick Tycoon Stakes in April, both at Santa Anita. Fire With Fire is out of the Capote mare Cosmic Fire, who has been a catalyst for Pavlish’s breeding operation through the past dozen years. The graded stakes-placed Cosmic Fire was spotted by horseman John Ward while still racing during the mid1990s and Pavlish bought her with designs on adding her to the small broodmare band at Beau Ravine Farm in northeast Ohio. Cosmic Fire continued to race through mid-1997 before retiring, but did not have early success in the breeding shed. Her fourth foal, however, turned out to be the stout four-time Grade 3 winner Cosmonaut, 7 Benoit & Associates Fire With Fire, bred by Patricia Pavlish, has emerged as a rising star in the West Coast turf division. a son of Lemon Drop Kid who earned over $1.3 million during six seasons of racing and is now a stallion in New York. Cosmic Fire also produced stakes-placed Kickin’ the Clouds, by Dixieland Band, who is the dam of Cloudy Vow. That 4-year-old filly ran third in the Grade 3 Pocahontas Stakes at Churchill Downs in 2012 and is still racing as a homebred for Pavlish, most recently finishing third in an allowance race at Presque Isle on May 20. Another of Cosmic Fire’s daughters, Cosmic Wish, is the dam of Japanese Group 3 winner Ijigen. Fire With Fire is the mare’s eighth foal overall, and all eight of her foals to start are winners. That female family has headlined Pavlish’s breeding program this century, but she also bred Grade 2 winner Saudi Poetry and bred and campaigned multiple graded stakes-placed Aeneas, an earner of over $430,000. Patricia Pavlish founded Beau Ravine Farm with her husband Ed. The couple owns a chemical company in Cleveland and resides at Beau Ravine in nearby Waite Hill and in south Florida.
