Rider Now Magazine • 352.598.6222 get noticed-Advertise! 1 From the Editor Valerie Smith Editor-In-Chief/Publisher [email protected] Many of you know that I was on staff for almost 5 years at Born to Ride TV & Magazine. When I started my own TV Production company in July 2008, I asked Full Throttle, Go Far, and Biker Profile Magazines if I could be a contributing Photographer and Writer. They all welcomed me with opened arms. They knew of my qualifications and reputation in the Biker Community. When I launched this magazine in July 2009 I publicly thanked all of them for their support and encouragement. We have grown faster than I could have ever imagined. Many of the people on our staff come from other publications. I also welcome them with opened arms and feel blessed that they wanted to join our team. My only requirement is that NOTES to the Editor... they read and comply with our Mission Statement. Public people or Media professionals all realize that we are ego driven. We sometimes forget that YOU are the reason that we do what we do! The shoes that we buy for needy children or the electric bill we pay for a downed brother are the acts that give us real value. The economy has caused many people to tighten their belts and purse strings. You don’t have to give big this year, but give. Be there for support on the Toy Runs and Benefits. Remember that no matter how bad it is for you, there is always someone who has it worse. The $10 toy you give may be the only one a needy child gets. The food you donate may be the highlight of a needy families Christmas Dinner. Ride safe and let your heart lead you. When my daughter was 10 I asked her what she wanted for Christmas. Her reply was that she wanted money so that she could get presents for other people. That’s when I realized that I had done a good job as a Mom! (Jessica, You have made me proud of you all of your life. You are a blessing to me and although your Father has passed on, He is proud of both of us. Merry Christmas and I love you and Rob Unconditionally. Mom) May you all be blessed by the spirit of the season... Happy holidays! Valerie, Hi! My name is Trish and I just finished reading your article in Rider Now Magazine (November 2009 issue, Val’s View, “I Like the Back”). Wow, what a good story and good for you! I know just by being a woman and buying my first bike (2000 Wide Glide), I’ve encountered some similar situations. I’ve had my bike a little over a year, and have put 4,000 miles on him already, and hope to ride even more in 2010. I hope one of these days at one event or another I will be able to meet you. You’re an inspiration to all women riders...not only because of this article, but in general. Keep it rockin’! Take care, Trish Editor Reply... Thank you, Trish, for being so strong and independent. I admire you for riding your own bike. Thank you, also, for supporting those of us who have ridden but now choose to be a passenger. Some women love roaring down the road solo with their hair in the wind enjoying the solitude and control of their own machine. Others enjoy the closeness and one on one conversation with the rider as a passenger. Giving up the control for the pleasure of the ride. It’s all about the ride. Enjoy! I had left the cold weather behind, and I would spend the winter in the desert in Quartzsite, Arizona. National Geographic Magazine called it the world’s largest parking lot. In the summer it’s a ghost town with temps up to 120 degrees, but in the winter over a million people pass through Quartzsite. Why? 2,500 venders spread their wares on the desert floor. Everything is for sale, and they have everything from oriental rugs to swiss cheese, electronics, art work, tiger skulls, gold panning equipment, and the most interesting people I have ever met. The Christmas parade is a slice of Americana you don’t want to miss. Floats and clowns and sky divers and women dressed like they just stepped out of “gun smoke”. What a blast! Preacher Mike holds revival meetings almost every night in a big tent on the edge of town. Mike travels all over the country following the bike rallies preaching the Gospel. You might have seen him in Sturgis, on the north side, up on the hill. He has a real burden for the bikers, because he is a biker. Bob is a world class silversmith whom I met in the Stagecoach restaurant one day and we became friends. He asked me if I had met Sandy, the snake lady yet. I said, no. He gave me directions to her RV about 12 miles south and down a dirt road and through a wash to By Hank where she spends the winter alone with her dog—and snakes. Real ones and replicas she models of clay. They are so life-like that if you stare at them for more than a few seconds, you’ll swear they moved. Her work has gone all over the world. Fish & Wildlife agents came out one time and accused her of killing rattlesnakes and then mounting them to sell. After close examination, they were convinced they were replicas, and bought several of them. When I wasn’t camped in the desert, I would camp in the B-10 campground in town. The “tent people” had to stay way in the back away from the RV’s. They were mostly homeless folks that moved with the seasons. I had the best time with them telling war stories around the camp fire. They didn’t have much, but they shared with everyone. The campground put out a nice spread for Christmas dinner—truly a great time. Enough said, well almost—Ho, Ho, Ho! Happy Holiday’s To All! I just wanted to take the time to Thank all the people who I have ever met and known for being part of my life. You all mean the world to me and my life is much richer because of friends like you. Thank you for years of awesome times and memories that will never fade. Thanks to all my advertisers who trusted me over the years to do the best job I could to help their businesses grow. I look forward to another spectacular year with all my Family & Friends and my Family of advetisers. Please watch over each other and take care of one another, we have one time at this so make it the best ever. Happy Holiday’s to all and the best wishes for the coming year! Soft vs. hard.. Softer compounds give an edge in grip on the road, especially when the bike is leaned over a lot. Harder compounds are designed to promote longer tread life and cooler running for the long touring riding. Tire manufacturers want tires to get warm fast and stay at a specific operating temp. but not to get too hot or the tire will wear at a very fast pace, or worse yet delaminate! Softer compounds flex more, come up to temp. faster (grip better) , but run hotter. Vice-versa…harder compounds flex less & run cooler. Typical street tires for your bike fall somewhere in between these two standards, offering a blend that warms up faster than touring tires, but runs slightly hotter than them too. Your riding style needs to play heavily in your tire choice. The right tire choice makes a huge difference in everything from stopping distances to grip on the road. There are other factors such as tread design, belt technology, chemical composition, profile design, filament size, speed rating, & load rating that need to be considered also. Be sure to discuss all these issues before deciding on which tire is right for you!.. Now Ride Safe! Bikerscap First Flea Market/Swapmeet a HUGE Success! by Lori Abruzzo On October 24th, Bikerscap Inc. held their first flea market/ swapmeet to raise funds for our organization. It was a very hot day, we had vendors of all sorts, food cooked by Nick, a bike wash, and best of all we made a donation to a brother and sister, Ashley and Craig. As always, we did it as a surprise to them, and they were very surprised. A special “thank you” to Parti Patti who MC’d our event, she did a great job! Greg and I went to Gunstock to meet up with Valerie. Wow! What a day that was! So exciting, and yes, very, very hot. But the music was great, the vendors were great with all the incredible food and merchandise. And since it was Halloween we saw people dressed up. It was a very nice event, plus I was able to meet most of the staff of Rider Now Magazine. On November 8th, we had a Poker Run For Fun event. We had lots of fun, food, raffles going on and it was real nice. Thank you to all our stops along the way: Char-Pals Lounge, My Place Lounge, BigFoot’s, Pegasus, and finally our ending destination–Picadilly’s. They’re all located in Tampa. See you all at our next event! Check the website for all events. www.bikerscap.org. I by complete accident heard a band that I feel the world should hear. I had the pleasure of sitting down and getting a little background of each of them. The name of this band is “Valence Shell”. Yes that was my first question, Where did you get the name? Charlie the lead singer, told me the valence shell is the outermost shell of and atom. It holds the electron and neutrons together. This seemed very complicated Linda to me, but when I heard their music, it was something I had never heard before. It unique and very entertaining. Mike plays keyboard and base, Johnny plays lead guitar. They have been making music for thirty years. Both are from California, and have opened for Edgar Winter. These men are so serious about what they do. Every thing is perfection. They met Charlie and were amazed at this young mans talent. Jay is the drummer and he hails from Connecticut. They have been influenced mostly by Pink Floyd. Dark Side of the Moon, is one of their favorite. They use sound effects with their music, and nothing they do should shock ,you only amaze you. Charlie got started singing Karaoke. He had been playing pool several night a week and did not even notice the karaoke, until someone got up and sang a Ping Floyd song and butchered it. He said to himself, “I can do better than that” , so he put his name in the hat and was hooked. He sang several nights a week and soon the guys started skipping over his hame. The crowd loved him. So he decided they next time they heard him would be in a band. He began auditioning and no one would hire him. He had no demos or anything to show what he could do. He ran into Mike and Johnny and they needed a singer, so they gave him a chance. Mike knew at once this young man was talented. You really must get out and see this band. They are fantastic and you will leave the show thoroughly entertained. By the way, when see them request “Barracuda” Yea Charlie can sing “Heart” like you wouldn’t believe and tell them Rider Now sent you. Have a great December and God Bless! BEEN TO THE REST? You make the call. If you were in Daytona this year and had your eyes even half open, you might have notice all the beautiful babes all over the place! Everywhere me and Magic seemed to have gone there were beautiful scantily clad women. Now I’m not complainin’. I’m just sayin’ that there were so many of them that I didn’t get a whole lot of pictures of bikes like I normally do. Except when we headed down to Rossmeyers Harley Davidson for the Rats’ Hole Show. Even there the ladies were just spectacular! It’s been a few years since I actually stayed in Daytona for the entire weekend but boy was I glad I did this year. We started out at Willie’s Tropical Tattoo for his Ol’ Skool Chopper Show which is always a good time. That should have been my sign of what the weekend was goin’ to turn out like. Normally I had done the show then headed back to the homestead but this year I said what the uck, let’s cruise around and see if anything has changed. We headed up to the White Eagle where there is ALWAYS somethin’ good goin’ on. This was always one of my favorite places to hang during Bikeweek and Biketoberfest. They do things here that used to happen in Daytona back in the day. Me and Magic wanted to thank the folks out at the Eagle for lettin’ us stay out back during the event and we had a blast hangin with your great group of folks and employees, they took good care of us!! We WILL be there for Bikeweek, you can bet on that! As I was saying, we normally don’t stay, we head out right after Willie’s but it seemed to be a different atmosphere this year in Daytona. I felt a little more wanted Word’s & Pics By Dice ( Not in the bad way) than in years past. Do they really want us to come back? Are they going to stop harrassing us? Or is it that they NEED our money? Well whatever the case, we felt a whole lot better about it this year and it seemed that less people were being hassled. We had a great time out at Rossmeyers Harley Davidson too, I had never been there during a “Big” event and man was I overwhelmed! It was like how it used to be back in the day on Main Street. It seems that everything has moved out there?? That’s Ok but it’s ashamed that it came down to that after all these years. Main Street was the “HUB” and the bars like Dirty Harry’s and Froggy’s and Boot Hill were the Staple. We still headed down to those waterin’ holes as well, It’s still what Daytona and major events are all about. We also hit the Cabbage patch which believe it or not, I had never been. I know, I, know what the hell , how can you go to Daytona and not go to the Cabbage Patch. It seemed I always wanted to go but never got the opportunity. We were always busy elsewhere. Not this year, we made it a point to go out that way and I’m *#$@ glad I did. I didn’t realize what I was missing! Some of THE most beautiful ladies I have ever seen were there! *#$@! I will NOT miss going out to this place again that’s for sure! They did have other stuff out there as well but my eyes were full at the time so I don’t remember much else. Sorry I’ll fill ya in next time I head out there....... All in all it was a good Babetoberfest, Whoops, I mean Biketoberfest. Whichever way you looked at it, as long as you had a good time, Daytona and it’s Bike events WILL be THE place to go. Words & Pics By DICE That Rascully Rabbit Roscoe was at it again this year with one hell of a turnout. Friday night was off the hook, I’d never seen a Friday at Rocoes like this. Saturday was no exception. People were all over the place and havin’ the best time of their lives. Roscoe kept everyone busy with his usual activities and POGO kept everyone entertained from the stage. He has a knack for gettin’beautiful ladies up on the stage and when they do, their clothes seem to fall off. Must be the stage I guess!!?? Anywho, what an awesome time we had meetin’up with old friends and meetin’new ones. It was great to see Helen & Len again, who are gracious enough to let us park out back behind their house for the weekend along with a whole lot of others. It was great seein’the guys from Tampa Bay Stitching Company Out of Lakeland who were doin up some kick ass shirts for the event this year. I met these folks a few years back when they actually entered the Chili cookoff and came in second with their“Big Game” Chili. That was some excellent chili! Some of the best I’ve ever had. These guys do some spectacular work too with T’s, embroidering and such. If you are in need of somethin’like that, give them a call @ 1-863-8595266 or tampabaystitchco@ aol.com ...........Tell em Dice sent ya and they’ll hook ya up.Thanks for the shirts Guys!! Thanks goes out to the“Lords Of Mayhem”.You guys Rock! We had a great time with you guys at Roscoes and it was great seein’ya in Daytona as well! Lookin’forward to seein’you again soon.........In the meantime stay away from that“Shine”! The usually Mini Bike Races, the Outhouse Drags, Horseshoe Tournanent, Arm Wrestling and of course the Chili Challenge kept everyone busy and entertained along with the antics of Pogo and the ladies on stage. This years Chili wasn’t too bad. There were all types of Chili being cooked up and the samplin’ started. My favorites are the ones with the most meat, gotta be thick otherwise it’s called“Soup”.There were hot ta mild ta thick ta thin but all were pretty *#$@ good. 32 They all had a great chance of winning this years challenge which had a $1,000 purse. (Does that mean they had to buy their own new dress to go with the purse??) Though the economy was in the _hitter this year, people didn’t seem to care. They were out here at Roscoes for a good time and that’s exactly what they did. This thing has been goin’on for 24 years and only seems to get better with age, just like Roscoe himself. This is still one of THE best ol’skool parties, not just in Florida but in the country! Thanks goes out to Roscoe and all his staff for being so *#$@ good to us! And to POGO, for all you do, this Bud’s for you! Thanks for all your help and being so accommodating to Rider Now Magazine. And of course many Thanks goes out to all the folks who attened this thing this year.Your the reason I go out to events like these. YOU make them successful for being there and we love havin’fun with ya and spendin’the time with ya!! Rider N ow Magazine 36 —Valerie Rider Now Magazine • RiderNowMag.com This is a heavy subject for such a light-hearted, happy season, however, I feel that I need to share with you some valuable lessons that I’ve learned through loss. I lost my beloved father 2 years ago this past November 6th. It’s a grief so harsh and deep, I can’t imagine that I will heal from it, however, I’ve learned a great deal about myself, my family, other people...and about grief. This year, Friday, November 6th, the Second Annual Ray Kitchens Memorial Pirate Treasure Benefit for LifePath Hospice was held at the Lube. A month prior to the event, every Lube bike night, I worked on a painting entitled “Daddy’s Girl” (see photo inset). The painting featured a Harley that I purchased because it reminded me of my daddy’s favorite ‘58 Ford Fairlane. Black and Red, with a gold pinstripe and white walls. If daddy had bought a bike, it would certainly be this one. I sold raffle tickets to give away this painting the night of the benefit. We also had a Silent Auction featuring prizes from Suzy King from The Friendly Fisherman-John’s Pass, Rider Now Magazine (full page ad in RNM-won by Dowling Graphicsin this issue), Hood-zee.com, Mary Kay (Dia Preston), BK Negotiate, Diamond Media Group, and many other wonderful donors.Live music from Selective Memory, was also donated by the Lube. The event was also sponsored by Rider Now Magazine and Slick’s Scooter Schedule, making it a HUGE success. This was my first opportunity to work with RNM and see a publication that takes action and truly makes a difference in the community. “Daddy’s Girl” by Sherrie St. James Photo by Jeff Maye • www.DesignMagicStudio.com This Holiday Season–let your love light shine! Rider Now Magazine SUPPORTED BY 44 Rider Now Magazine • RiderNowMag.com The Special Gift By Bifer Well, it's that time of year again. The time of year we do the toy runs and try to help those kids and families that otherwise my not have a Christmas at all. I Don't know about you, but this is one of my favorite times of the year. First we give thanks for our freedom and all that we have and then we to get celebrate the most important birthday ever, (The Birth of Christ). There really are a lot of people out there in need right now. So many are out of work and feeling hard times, but as we move closer to the holidays we all have a special opportunity to share some hope with those who have none. That's the SPECIAL GIFT. I personally have had the honor of being able to serve in some way at a toy run for many years. There is nothing like helping out like that. I use to live in South Florida where we put on a toy run that averages almost 50,000 bikers in attendance. It's so huge you can hardly see how the needs are met. Up here not so big, but we get to watch the kids and hear the stories directly. Awesome. Either way, we are really helping out. That's the SPECIAL GIFT. When we go out and buy that special present for a child we may never meet, or touch the heart of a parent that was worried about getting their children Christmas presents; That's the SPECIAL GIFT. Sometimes it's when we help a family with a basket of food so they can enjoy the holiday or just stopping by or making a call to someone you know who may be lonely. That's the SPECIAL GIFT. I love getting out in the wind and riding my bike for the sole purpose of helping someone out. I know some of us don't like riding in those large groups. But hey, the KIDS are worth it. Again, That's the SPECIAL GIFT. By now you've either figured it out or you really want to know! What is that SPECIAL GIFT? It's caring about others more then yourself. Some times it's not that easy to do, but we have a really great example. It says in the Bible: For God so loved the world that He gave His only-begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life, (John 3:16). It can't get any better then that. Remember that important birthday I mentioned earlier, well that's that SPECIAL GIFT. Christmas is about celebrating the Birth of Christ. The greatest gift we could ever be given. Do you know the reason for the season. Do we celebrate it for the right reasons. The gifts we give and receive are reminders of the special gift GOD gave in his SON. He gave the greatest gift ever when he allowed his son to sacrifice his life to pay for the mistakes we have made, just so we could have a real relationship with the creator of the world. Have you accepted that great free gift. The SPECIAL GIFT. Merry Christmas to you and yours. Any questions contact me at Bifer4cma@gmail. CHILI COOK OFF!
