PATRIOTS’ DAY IN OGUNQUIT 2016 -- GUIDE PRESENTED BY THE WEEKLY SENTINEL 13 What Is Patriots’ Day, Anyway? Patriots’ Day is officially a commemoration of the first battles of the Revolutionary War: those at Lexington and Concord on April 19, 1775. These battles began shortly after Paul Revere’s famous “Midnight Ride” to Lexington on the night of April 18, 1775 to warn the minutemen that “the Redcoats are coming!” Patriots’ Day is celebrated only in Massachusetts, Maine, and now Wisconsin (which officially recognized the holiday in 2001) on the third Monday of April, as we continue to keep alive the memory of our forefathers’ dedication to the ideals of freedom and democracy. On Friday evening this year, we hope to move outside for our annual historical re-enactment, which will be of General Washington crossing the Delaware River on Christmas night in 1776. The famous painting by Emanuel Gottlieb Leutze is included in this booklet. If you choose to watch from the shore at Sea Chambers, you will be able to join us as the Patriot Fife and Drum Duo march us back to the Ogunquit Baptist Church to learn more about the musical instruments of the Colonial era, and about the fife and drum in particular. Throughout the weekend, we will have plenty of photo opportunities available for you, as you can pretend to be Uncle Sam, a rabble-rouser stuck in the stocks, or a respectable Colonial family, and more. Saturday night, we will create our own version of the Boston Tea Party in Perkins Cove. Learn a little about the historical event as we toss tea off one of our local boats. Finally, on Sunday we will have another re-enactment, this one more modern, but still in keeping with our Patriotic theme. Few photos garner more patriotic feelings than the 71-yearold photo by Joe Rosenthal of the raising of the flag at Iwo Jima. This photo was used as the basis of the Marine Corps War Memorial statue at the entrance of the Arlington National Cemetery. Join with us as we take a moment to create our own version, and to remember all of the brave Americans throughout our history who have fought and died to secure our freedoms as Americans. Then we end the weekend on a lighter note, with the Patriotic Pooch Pageant. Dress your dog in red, white and blue or as your favorite American (past favorites have included Barbara Bush and Sarah Palin). Your dog is sure to win the adoration of the crowd, and may even walk away with a prize! The Patriotic Pooch Pageant is just one way to win a prize over the weekend. The Ogunquit Chamber of Commerce will also award prizes in the 4th Annual American Pie Contest, as well as for several historically-themed treasure hunts. (No skill necessary - see the schedule of events in this booklet for more information.) You can also be entered to win a prize just by taking photos of yourself enjoying the festivities and posting them on social media using #loveogt. This weekend is truly a celebration of all things American! The Ogunquit Chamber of Commerce thanks you for joining us for our 26th annual Patriots’ Day Weekend Celebration. We hope you enjoy the festivities in Ogunquit, and we encourage you to return in the future as we continue to add exciting new features and historical events, celebrating our founders’ commitment to our country’s ideals and the early years of the republic. Please note that in 2017, Easter and Patriots’ Day fall on the same weekend, so our Patriots’ Day Celebration will be held the following weekend, April 21-23, 2017. “If you would not be forgotten, as soon as you are dead and rotten, either write things worth reading, or do things worth the writing.” ~ Benjamin Franklin 14 PATRIOTS’ DAY IN OGUNQUIT 2016 -- GUIDE PRESENTED BY THE WEEKLY SENTINEL CELEBRATING OVER 20 YEARS OF AMORE Join us Sunday 4/17 4-6pm for a fun SAM ADAMS PARTY!
