remember it like it was
yesterday. It was warm
July day in Breckenridge,
Colo. I was a very nervous
21-year-old standing before
the members of the Livestock
Publications Council (LPC)
sharing my dreams and goals
for the future as the recipient
of the 1995 Forrest Bassford
Student Award.
That day I asked if those in
attendance would like a check
for $86,400. The only stipulation was they had to spend it
in 24 hours. They couldn’t
carry any of it over or they
couldn’t use any of it in
advance. I asked them to
ponder how they’d spend the
$86,400.
Obviously as a college
senior at the time, I did not
have $86,400 to give each my
LPC friends at that meeting,
but I challenged them with
the fact that each and every
one of us has 86,400 seconds
every day to spend as we
choose.
My challenge to you my
friends today is the same,
don’t stew about the future
and don’t live in the past,
make the decision to live for
the present and use your
86,400 seconds effectively
each and every day.
During that same speech
20 years ago, I shared my
dream of some day having
Ed Bible’s job, former
American Polled Hereford
Association director of communication and editor of the
Polled Hereford World. I also
said I hoped to serve on the
LPC Board of Directors. I’ll
admit these goals were pretty
far-reaching for a senior
in college.
Call me crazy, but prior to
my trip to Scottsdale for this
year’s Ag Media Summit, I
dug up my notes from that
1995 acceptance speech just
to remind me of what I said
that special day. That award
and that year’s LPC convention had a huge effect on
my life.
But most of all it is the
people of this organization
who have made such a difference in my career path.
People like Ed, Jerilyn
Johnson Houghton, Larry
Erpelding, Keith Evans,
Shauna Hermel, Cheryl
Oxley, Diane Johnson and
especially Forrest Bassford,
helped me develop a passion
for the livestock publications
industry and LPC. I can’t
thank those individuals
enough for lighting a spark in
me and continuing to fan the
flame through the years.
And most of all thank you
to each and every one of you.
It’s an honor to serve this
organization and its members
as the 2015-16 Livestock
Publications Council
President. All I can say is that
it is a dream come true and an
opportunity I will treasure for
a lifetime.
As I said in Scottsdale, this
organization is all about you
— its members. Let us know
what suggestions you have. In
November, the LPC Board of
Directors will be participating
in a long-range planning session and developing a road
map for LPC’s future. Prior to
that session we will be sending out a membership survey;
please take the time to
respond. Let us know what
ideas and concerns you have.
Twenty years — it’s hard
to believe it’s been that long
since I had the humbling
honor of winning the Forrest
Bassford Award. I can’t wait
to see what opportunities
await during the next 20
years. But for now, I’m looking forward to spending
31,536,000 seconds serving
as your president.

Recognized with the 2015 Ed Bible Distinguished
Service Award (DSA) is Jennifer Carrico, Redfield, Iowa.
Jennifer has been involved in LPC activities for many years
and currently serves on the board of directors. She has served
as chairman of the AMS program committee and was the
chairman of the event in 2014. A 1996 graduate of Iowa State
University, she holds a bachelor of science degree in Animal
Science and a minor in journalism. Her work experience
started at Iowa Farmer Today
and since 2006 she has been a
field editor for High Plains
Journal. She is also active in
her community with the FFA
Alumni and the school’s
Booster Club. Jennifer is raising the sixth generation in her
family with her two children
Kassidy and Klayton on their
family’s cattle and crop farm in
central Iowa. The DSA award
is chosen by the LPC executive
committee and is given to
someone who exhibits dedication, support and service considered above and beyond routine participation. It is presented in memory of Ed Bible,
long-time LPC supporter and past president. Presenting the
DSA award to Jennifer Carrico is LPC First Vice President
Scarlett Hagins, Kansas Stockman, Topeka, Kan.
Winning the prestigious
award for the Paul Andre
Best of the Bunch award is
Erin Worrell, who owns
her freelance business,
Rancher’s Resource. Her
photo chosen by popular
vote will be on the cover of
the 2015-16 LPC
Membership Directory.

Nicole Lane receives the
2015 Forrest Bassford Student Award
Nicole Lane, a senior majoring
in agricultural communications and
journalism at Kansas State
University (KSU), was the recipient of the 2015 Livestock
Publications Council (LPC)
Forrest Bassford Student Award
sponsored by Alltech, Inc. Lane
was presented a $2,000 scholarship
and a plaque during the AMS held
in Scottsdale.
Lane, the daughter of Andrea
Ferreira of Canyon City, OR, is an
active member of Agricultural
Communicators of Tomorrow
(ACT), Sigma Alpha Professional
Agricultural Sorority and the KState Proud Student Foundation.
She also serves as a KSU College
of Agriculture Ambassador and
staff writer for The Collegian
newspaper. Lane is a member of
LPC, the National FFA Alumni
Association and an Agriculture
Future of America Delegate.
In addition to her involvement
in collegiate clubs and national
organizations, Lane serves as the
communications intern for the
Kansas Department of Agriculture
and the graphic communications
assistant for the KSU Research and
Extension News and Media Team.
“I am honored to add my name
to the list of great K-State alumni
and others who have won this
award,” said Lane. “It is because of
the people who have mentored me
that I am able to have opportunities
like this. I am so humbled to
receive this award from people
who inspire me to be a better communicator and agriculturalist every
day.”
The Forrest Bassford award
honors excellence, professionalism
and leadership among students.
Each year, following a competitive
application process, the LPC
Student Award Program presents
four young people travel scholarships to attend AMS. In addition to
Lane, this year's travel award winners were Kendall Herren,
University of Illinois; Jamie
Keyes, Utah State University and
Kaitlin Morgan, Kansas State
University. While at the meeting,
the four finalists’ portfolios were
reviewed and each was interviewed
by a panel of professionals. This is
the 30th year for the Student Award
Program, which was named after
LPC founding member Forrest
Bassford in 1992.

The Headliner award was presented to Dr. Miles
McKee, retired professor and world-renowned livestock
judge. He was unable to travel and attend AMS so to
accept the award were the KSU alumni who have been
impacted by him. He, along with the Crows, will be
honored again in Kansas City on November 10 during
the Vision event.
