CACTUS: What Do You Know?
Cactus - they’re everywhere. You can’t throw
a stick in Arizona without hitting one. Not that
you should be throwing things at cactus, since the
statuesque saguaro is protected under state law. But
besides the legal issues, most wild-growing cacti are
pretty fragile plants, taking many years to
grow to a visible size. This is one reason
why hikers are advised to “stay on the trail”
to avoid treading on tiny cactus seedlings,
among other fledgling desert plants.
The saguaro cactus is iconic in the
Sonoran Desert, where it grows exclusively.
Athough it is not currently classified as either
endangered or threatened, Arizona has
regulated its collection. The largest cactus
in the U.S., saguaros may live for 150 to 200 years.
They grow very slowly and a 10-year-old plant might
only stand 1.5” tall. Known for their branches, or
arms, there may be up to 25 of these upward-growing
appendages, or none at all on some plants. Saguaro
display white blooms in a circle at the top and form
red fruit in early summer. Originally harvested by
the Tohono O’odham tribe, the fruit is very juicy and
somewhat sweet. Each fruit can hold up to 2,000
seeds and the pulp was used to make jams, syrups
and biscuit cakes. Today, special permits are required
to harvest fruit on public lands or state parks.
Relocation of the saguaro is a careful, exacting
process, performed by
professionals. Extensive
padding is used to protect
the fragile skin and precise
measurements are done
in cutting the roots so
that when replanted, the
saguro will recover
and adapt to the new
location.
Many birds make
their homes inside the
saguaro plant. The
Gila woodpecker creates a hole in the side of a plant
and digs a deep recess inside. The saguaro forms a
tough callous around the recess, providing a nest for
the woodpeckers’ eggs. Other birds move into these
nests in subsequent years.
Arizona Facts
The capital of Arizona is Phoenix. Arizona
fills 113,417 square miles, making it the sixth
largest state. Its borders touch California,
Nevada, Utah, New Mexico and Mexico.
State Flag: The top half has 13 stripes that
pay tribute to the original U.S. colonies. They
are arranged to depict the western setting sun.
The copper star in the center was included
when Arizona was the top-producing state of
copper. The blue and yellow colors used are
the Arizona State colors and the blue and red
are the same shades found on the U.S. flag.
State bird: Cactus wren
State flower: Saguaro

State mammal: Ring-tail
cat
State amphibian: Arizona tree frog
azrvguide.com
State fish: Apache trout
State neckwear: Bola tie
State tree: Palo Verde
State reptile: Ridgenose rattlesnake
State song: “Arizona
March Song” by
Margaret Row Clifford. An alternate, more
popular song is “I Love Arizona” by Rex
Allen, Jr.
State motto: “Ditat Deus,”
which means God Enriches
Arizona became a state on
February 14, 1912, so it’s just
over 100 years old.

Arrive In The Fall ~ Stay Into Spring
Stand at the edge of the Grand Canyon,
marvel at the red rocks of Sedona, experience a
360-degree view of an Arizona sunset - and do it
between April and October.
So many RVers in southern Arizona hook up
their rigs too early, heading home before spring
has truly arrived.
In most regions, Arizona’s most enjoyable
weather is April through May and from midSeptember through October. That’s when we have
warm days and patio-perfect evenings with cool
desert breezes and spectacular sunsets.
In the early mornings, we have our windows
open and enjoy our morning papers and coffee
on the patio. We take long walks and listen to the
birds.
Arizona offers so many options for hikers.
They can explore the trails of the Coronado
National Forest as they visit the awesome
Karchner Caverns. They can participate in
Bisbee’s Fiesta de las Aves (Festival of the Birds),
a full week of activities celebrating the migratory
birds that have earned southeastern Arizona a
special place in the hearts of birders everywhere.
They can try the Wilson Mountain trail where
they’ll love the eagle’s view of Oak Creek Canyon
and the surrounding mountains.
Baseball fans have flocked to Arizona for over
50 years to enjoy Arizona’s most comfortable
season and watch major league baseball spring
training throughout the Valley of the Sun. Golfers
also flock to the more than 300 courses across the
state.
Although the weather does the “Summer
Sizzle” in southwest Arizona during July and
August, RVing is still a wonderful option.
Arizona’s High Desert, including the northern
Arizona and White Mountains regions, offers a
warm setting with a variety of recreational, small
town celebrations and entertainment venues. The
West Coast region has plenty of water sports to
entertain and keep visitors cool during the heat of
the summer.
Sports fanatics root for the Arizona
Diamondbacks baseball team or Phoenix Mercury
women’s NBA basketball team, and start the
football season early by viewing the Arizona
Cardinals “up close and personal” in the covered
University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, AZ
training camp, then cheering them at their preseason games.
Music lovers enjoy the music at the White
Mountain Bluegrass Festival, at Sedona’s Jazz
on the Rocks, an internationally known jazz
festival, or at the Grand Canyon Music Festival,
while theatergoers can savor Prescott’s Arizona
Shakespeare Festival as well as numerous local
theater and regional theater offerings. Art
enthusiasts can scout Phoenix’s First Fridays Art
Walk, Tucson’s La Fiesta de San Augustin or
Chinle’s annual Central Navajo Fair.
Arizona is always in season.

Nothing can compare to the
beautiful open vistas of this area.
It shares the glorious climate of
the Valley of the Sun, so outdoor
activities like hiking and sightseeing
will keep you busy. Located near the
tribal reservations of the Gila River
and Tohono O’Odham, there are
several small local museums and
information sites to learn about the
Native Americans of this region.

Arizona’s Southern Wine Country
Coronado Vineyards
Arizona’s wine industry has found new life in Cochise
County. Arizona and California wineries have been buying
Cochise County grapes for more than 20 years. Our climate’s
bright sunny days, cool nights and warm soil, is great for
grapes.
Growers have planted acres of new grapes, and winemakers
are busy working on their new vintages. You can find wineries
in Willcox, Portal and Fort Bowie. Arizona wines are featured
throughout the county and the state in fine restaurants.
Wineries in Cochise County often have a tasting booth at
events throughout the county. Willcox and Bisbee hold
annual wine festivals in October. Coronado Vineyards puts
on an annual Grape Stomp weekend with music and fun. The
Arizona Wine Growers Association has hosted a series of 5K
races throught the state. Events will likely continue to sprout
up as the wine country flourishes.

It all starts with Main Street in Mesa, which turns into
Apache Trail east of Higley Rd. But when you veer off
to the northeast onto SR 88 through Apache Junction
you can really tell that you’re out of the city, on the real
Apache Trail. Follow the sometimes mountainous road
east to visit the Superstition Mountain Museum, Goldfield
Ghost Town, Lost Dutchman State Park, then Canyon
Lake, stopping in Tortilla Flat for some local color. Go all
the way to Roosevelt Dam, just past Apache Lake, but be
warned that there’s some dirt road for awhile before you
get there. If you keep going, you’ll find the mining towns
of Globe, Miami and Superior before circling back on
Hwy. 60, through Gold Canyon, to your East Valley home.

T
he upper almost-third
of Arizona is home to
such American icons as the Grand Canyon,
Historic Route 66, the red rocks of Sedona and
the Eagles’ famous corner in Winslow. Perhaps
not as well known are Prescott, the original
territorial capitol of Arizona, quirky, art-filled
Jerome and some of the most awe-inspiring
scenery in the West.
The high season here is summer, when high
altitude provides cool temperatures and
plenty of reasons to go outdoors. Williams,
map is not to scale
west of Flagstaff, is a fun little town
that is the starting point for the Grand
Canyon Railway. Another great train ride is
the Verde Canyon Railroad that leaves from
Clarkdale, near Cottonwood, to take you on
an unforgettable tour of the Verde Valley, as
the early miners must have seen it.
Navajo and Hopi Indians share the land to
the northeast, surrounding the wild, majestic
Canyon de Chelly.

South of town, you can wander
the historic town of Tubac, visiting
galleries and shops to see local
treasures. Tumacacori, just next
door on Route 19, is the ruin of a
Franciscan mission built in 1795.
Now a National Historic Park,
you can tour the old church and
grounds.

Just to the west, Ajo is a little
western town with charm and
history. A former mining town, Ajo
boasts a museum and copper mine
pit that stretches 1.5 miles long. It’s
also right next to the Organ Pipe
Cactus National Monument, a
natural wonder of cactus and wild
desert beauty.

f you’re looking for water sports in the
desert, you’re sure to find some fun in the
West Coast of Arizona. The Colorado River
runs along this western border, providing
life-sustaining water and recreation to all
who visit. But there’s much more to this area.

Lake Havasu City is a haven to all who love
water sports. Situated along the banks of
the Colorado River, it is famously the second
home of the London Bridge, which spans
the river. Parker, just a few miles south, is
another place to enjoy water-related fun.

Founded as Mineral City, Ehrenberg lies
along the Colorado River. The town was

T
he western region of the Valley of
the Sun holds a surprising variety of
activities and attractions. The beautiful
White Tank Mountains are the western-most
range of the Valley. There’s great hiking there,
with amazing views of the entire West Valley.
Wickenburg is a true Old West town, with fun
festivals and shopping. And in the northern
part of Peoria is Lake Pleasant, with lots of
boating and fishing opportunities.
In Glendale, you can attend NFL games
at the retractable field stadium where the
map is not to scale
Arizona Cardinals play, or NHL games, just
next door, to cheer on the Phoenix Coyotes.
The Sun Cities, Surprise and El Mirage all
offer great choices in golf courses, and in
Litchfield Park you can see animals from
around the world at the Wildlife World Zoo.
In all cities within the West Valley you can
find fine dining, entertainment and much
more in the way of scenic beauty and
attractions. And a selection of museums
and concert venues are nearby in downtown
Phoenix.

Bring your fishing gear, canoe and hiking boots
with you, but be sure to take advantage of local
festivals, including those of the White Mountain
Apache tribe whose reservation is in this
area and who own and operate the Hon-Dah
Resort and Casino in Pinetop. Take a trip to
Strawberry to see the Strawberry Schoolhouse
- built in 1885 - the oldest school building in
the state. Nearby Pine has a few more tourist
amenities and shopping, and Payson is almost
a big city, with big stores and medical facilities.

need to go. Perched on the edge of the
Mogollon (say mug-ee-yon) Rim, you can see
snow-topped mountains and blooming spring
flowers in the same glance. There are pine trees
and high desert cacti growing on the same
hillside. Flowing cool water and the bright
Arizona sunshine combine for a magnificent
outdoor experience.

the resort sits at 7,200 feet in elevation and is surrounded by tall Ponderosa
pines. The White Mountains region of eastern Arizona is known for its scenic,
high-country beauty, diverse outdoor recreation and mild climate – summer
temperatures range in the 70s and 80s. Hon-Dah Resort is not only a luxury
destination resort, but also a conferences/events hub and the premier
entertainment center for the White Mountains region.
Luxury Hotel
The resort’s 128 oversized, luxury rooms are reasonably priced and have
too many amenities to mention here. Guests enjoy the allseason pool, hot tub and sauna in any weather, day or night.
The magnificent lobby features a rockscape, waterfall, animal

accommodate business meetings, catered parties or special
events for groups up to 700 attendees. From food and drink
to decorations to live entertainment, Hon-Dah’s Banquets and
Events professional staff will provide their special touch for
your event.
Great Food – Great Buffets
The Indian Pine Restaurant offers breakfast, lunch and
dinner 7 days a week. Whether you have an appetite for
a juicy steak or a pizza, the restaurant is the place to find
quality food selections. If you like a feast, check out the
daily breakfast, lunch and dinner buffets. For a special dining
experience try the Friday night seafood buffet, Saturday night
prime rib buffet or Sunday champagne brunch.
Awesome Entertainment and Events
For locals and visitors alike, Hon-Dah’s entertainment is topnotch. Every Tuesday through Saturday nights the Timbers
Lounge presents live music and dancing. The bands are some
of the best in the U.S. and typically play in Las Vegas cabarets
and other metropolitan nightclubs. The band selections are
always varied – featuring rock, country, Latin or oldies
music. Up and coming stand-up comedians are featured
every Monday night at our Munday Funday Comedy Club. For
Special Events, Hon-Dah has something for everyone: Pow
Wow in the Pines and Native American Art Pre-Show, just to
name a few.
Casino Excitement
Over 800 slot machines, live poker, blackjack and promotion
giveaways provide nonstop excitement andfun in Hon-Dah’s
casino. Progressive jackpots reach into the hundreds of
thousands of dollars and cars can be won, too. Hon-Dah adds
new slots regularly and you’ll appreciate our EZ Pay coinless
azrvguide.com
machines. Our Players Club members enjoy the cash, food, rooms and other
rewards they receive for point redemptions.
RV Park and More
We’ve got 358 beautiful sites nestled in the Ponderosa pines. The year-round
RV Park is adjacent to the Casino and offers satellite TV, a laundry, showers
and much more. The Convenience Store and Gas Station is the perfect place
to stop for beverages, snacks and camping/fishing necessities. The gas prices
are usually the lowest in the area. Stop by the Hon-Dah Ski and Outdoor
Store for outdoor items for every season: ski and snowboard sales/rentals,
clothing, fishing gear and permits – just to name a few.

Exploring the White Mountains
Anyone who has spent time in the White
Mountains knows that this is far from the dry,
sandy desert that comes to mind when picturing
Arizona. Here’s some information about some of
the great high country destinations.
Payson
Billed as “Arizona’s Cool
Mountain Town,” Payson is a
summer getaway for many of
the Phoenix Valley residents.
One of the largest town’s in
the White Mountain area,
Payson has the natural beauty,
along with good shopping, a Tom Brossart, Payson Roundup©
rich western rodeo heritage, an active calendar
of events and the annual County Fair in early
September. At an elevation of 5,000 feet, it’s
always 15 to 20 degrees cooler than in the Valley.
the base of the Mogollon Rim got its name from
the wild strawberries that its founders discovered
there. These days, one of the local highlights is
the Pine-Strawberry Arts & Crafts Guild Craft
Festival - a shopping institution for 30 years. The
festival takes place at the Pine Community Center
July 3 and 4, and features 85 artisans who sell
furniture, pottery, jewelry, fountains and more.
Come early both days for the fire department’s
pancake breakfast, or fill up on hearty Navajo
tacos and other food options throughout the day.
Pinetop-Lakeside
These two communities were incorporated into
one town in 1984. Lakeside was named for the
area’s many lakes by early Mormon settlers in
the 1880s. Pinetop was named in honor of the
nickname of one of the town’s saloon keepers.
Not only are there the many natural charms, like
fishing, boating, hiking and camping, but there are
Strawberry
At an elevation of 6,047 feet, this little town at great local golf courses for summer enjoyment.

In Arizona, a person over age 21
may legally carry a concealed
firearm or deadly weapon
without a permit within the state,
except for certain prohibited
locations, and must disclose the
fact to a law enforcement officer
if questioned. Although no
longer required, a CCW permit
may still be obtained and has
certain advantages, including
reciprocity with many other
states having CCW laws.

Arizona gun laws are found mostly in Title 13, Chapter 31 of the Arizona Revised Statutes. There is no
registration or licensing of non-NFA firearms in Arizona. In fact, Section 13-1308 subsection B prohibits
any political subdivision of the state from enacting any laws requiring licensing or registration. According
to state law, a person must be 18 years of age to purchase any non-NFA firearm from any source; however,
there is a federal age limit of 21 years on handgun purchases from federal firearms licensees.

rom early days in Arizona’s territorial
history, Yuma was considered to be the
gateway to California. A settlement was
built along with a bridge over the Colorado
River and history was made.
Today, Yuma is a bustling community that
carefully preserves its history and offers
a comfortable winter climate for RVers to
enjoy. The river makes water sports and
fishing convenient and varied wildlife refuges
and parks offer great ways to get outdoor
exercise. For indoor fun there are nearby
casinos, shopping and some wonderful
historical attractions that demonstrate the
role Yuma played in bringing commerce
through Arizona.
Wellton, to the east of Yuma, is a smaller city

with its own charms. There are plenty of smalltown activities to keep you busy while you
enjoy the mild temperatures and easy lifestyle.

5 Easy Ways to Green Your RV
by Cedar Attanasio, Sierra Club
About ten years ago, Ty Adams asked himself a question that
became an obsession. How do you make RVs green? The question
led him to quit his job at an RV magazine, sell his house, and build
his first green RV, the biofueled BioTrekker. Adams now works as a
freelance writer, but is still involved with green RVs. He volunteers
as an adviser to SolTrekker, another biodiesel RV and environmental
program on wheels. The non-profit that operates it, also called
SolTrekker, uses the RV as a sustainable showroom, exhibiting solar
systems and renewable materials. Adams’s projects are exciting
because RVs are notorious for their carbon footprint. He found ways
to turn this symbol of excess into one of sustainability.
2. Throw out the TV: Many motor homes have large wasteful TVs
installed, but it’s still nice to watch a movie on the road. Ty ripped out
his energy sucking TV and watched movies on his laptop.
The SolTrekker boasts some labor intensive projects like a biodiesel
engine, a solid waste compost system, and a rainwater catchment/
grey water collection unit. But what can RV owners do today, in a
couple of hours, at minimal cost? We asked Adams to share some
tips for RVers just starting to green up. It turns out you can do a lot
of things without a huge expense or technical know-how.
5. Solar power: It’s easy to retrofit your RV with a solar panel to
supplement or replace the generator. Easier, in fact than your house.
The 12 volt system is already there: batteries, inverter and wiring.
Ty recommends single or multi-panel kits that use 3M adhesives for
the roof. Few or no tools required. 1. Install LED light bulbs: “This is a great place to start,” says
Adams. LEDs use about half the energy of conventional bulbs,
decreasing the RV’s footprint, and increasing the length of time it
can stay off the grid. azrvguide.com
3. Inflate your tires: According to the U.S. Department of
Transportation, “under-inflated tires can lower gas mileage by 0.3
percent for every 1 psi drop in pressure of all four tires.” For RVs,
more tires and more friction with the road makes inflation even
more important. 4. Upgrade the fridge: Adams threw out his RV’s inefficient fridge
from the 90s, replacing it with a low-energy marine fridge that used
half the power.
With TVs, fridges, and solar panels, Adams has an overarching
suggestion. “When you’re doing upgrades look at boating stores.
‘Marine’ products are way better because boaters need them to be
better.” RV stores, by comparison, sell less efficient and less durable
gear.

Advice for Canadians in Arizona

The vast majority of Canadians who visit Arizona have a safe and rewarding

we encourage you to follow these recommendations.
A Certificate of Canadian Citizenship is not a travel
document. A Canadian passport is the only reliable

document available to Canadians for the purpose

to Canada who present other documents, such as a
Certificate of Canadian Citizenship, birth certificate,
provincial driver’s license, or foreign passport,
instead of a Canadian passport, may face delays or
be denied boarding by transport companies.
The Consulate General of Canada in Los Angeles can
offer you emergency passport services under certain
circumstances. Please contact our consular staff for
more information.
Obtain all required visas or permits if you will be
marrying, studying, residing or working in the U.S. For
more information on documentation requirements,
please refer to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration
Services website at www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis.
A maximum admission period of six months is the
norm for Canadian citizens visiting the U.S. The
length of time you are allowed to visit is determined
by U.S. officials when you enter the country. Be
careful not to overstay your allotted time, as it may
lead to complications.
Be aware that if you break U.S. laws, you are subject
to the local judicial system. The U.S. Zero Tolerance
Policy imposes severe penalties for the possession
of even a small amount of an illegal drug, and many
Canadians get into serious trouble for buying, selling,
using or transporting drugs in the U.S.
Canadians who intend to take a cruise embarking
from California should consult our fact sheet entitled
Advice for cruise travellers at www.travel.gc.ca/
publication.
Many types of natural disasters, such as
heavy rains and floods, can occur at any
time. There may be disruptions in transport,
utilities, emergency and medical care, as well
as food, fuel and water supplies. Visit the
Arizona Emergency Information Network website at
azein.gov/azein/default.aspx for further information.
Check with your travel agent or tour operator to
confirm your travel plans prior to departure.
Sign up for the Registration of Canadians Abroad
service at www.travel.gc.ca/register, so we can
contact and assist you in an emergency abroad, such
as a natural disaster or civil unrest, or inform you of
an emergency at home.
Invest in the best supplemental travel insurance you
can afford before leaving Canada to avoid the high
cost of trip cancellation, hospitalization, medical
evacuation or another emergency. A single accident
or medical evacuation could result in years of debt
for you or your family if you are unprepared. Your
provincial or territorial health insurance is almost
certainly not adequate abroad.
