From the
Director’s Desk
September and October
strike me as a season
of change. September
enters the scene with
the last remnants of summer months
hanging on, sometimes still quite warm.
By the end of October we may be
pulling on winter jackets while we watch
the last of the leaves fade from green to
orange to brown and finally to fall away.
Your Morton Grove
Public Library is in
a season of change
as well. The summer
saw us implement
self-service checkout
machines and a self-service hold shelf.
Librarians enjoyed the looks on people’s
faces as we opened the front doors
for the first time in over 30 years! We
created a Productivity Area for faxing,
scanning and creating content on library
equipment. Did you see us pushing
book carts in the 4th of July parade?
Far from resting on our laurels, after
a very successful Summer Reading
Program we are heading into the Fall
with a plethora of exciting programs and
cutting-edge services.
Watch our catalog for increased search
functionality both in the library and via
our website. Find e-books and other
downloadable media through Hoopla,
My Media Mall, and eRead Illinois.
Attend an MGPL After Dark concert or
use your creative talents to help out a
charity. Need personal assistance with
your laptop, device or gadget? Call us,
we want to help!
There will be more exciting changes
ahead. I look forward to seeing you
stopping in to check it out!

new
display
case!
Are you an avid collector of unique items?
Here is your opportunity to dust off
those meaningful items and share
your collection with the Morton Grove
community. The library has a new
showcase that can be used for exhibiting
your personal collections.
Items deemed suitable and appropriate –
such as salt & peppers shakers, vintage
postcards or comic books, and other
similar collections – are welcome to be
displayed.
For more information, please contact
Adult Services at [email protected] or call
847-929-5101.

Come on by the library and be a part of
National Library Card Sign-Up Month!
During the month of September, Morton
Grove residents who sign up for a new
library card or renew an existing one
(cards that expire before Dec. 31, 2014) will
receive a free MGPL tote bag. You will also
be entered for a drawing for a chance to win
tickets to Fear City Haunted House.
Tickets were donated by Fear City Chicago.
crafting for charity
In July we
rolled out
a new and
exciting
program
that offers an opportunity to
learn, participate in creating
items for charities, and socialize
along the way. We are
continuing with Crafting for
Charity in September and
October, and it is not too late to
join! See details on page 10.
did You Know that MGPL
Provides Homebound Services?
Library staff deliver books and other
materials to Morton Grove residents who
are confined to their residences either
temporarily, due to illness, or permanently,
due to age, disability or other mobility
issues.
Fill out an application at www.mgpl.org/
about/homebound-services-pol or just
give us a call at 847-929-5101 to start the
service.
If you've been in the library recently
you may have noticed unusual things
going on in the stacks -- power cords
running through the aisles and staff
attaching something to every book.
What's it all about? In four letters, RFID
-- or radio frequency identification. RFID
is a technology used in a wide variety
of industries, including an increasing
number of libraries, to track and maintain
better control of their inventory. In
libraries, its primary benefit is faster
checkouts -- both by staff at the checkout desk and by library users at our new
self-checkout stations.
The RFID tags currently being placed in
every item in the library’s collection are
encoded with the item's barcode number
and a "flag" indicating whether or not
the item is currently checked out. No
information about the person borrowing
an item is ever stored on the tag.
This project should be completed by
mid-fall.
