BLAZE 5k &
Hero Homecoming
April is National Limb Loss Awareness Month. Over 500 people in the U.S.
lose a limb each day. Amputations result from congenital limb difference,
cancer, disease, trauma and warfare. With diabetes and vascular disease as
the leading causes of limb loss, studies show 60% of limb loss is preventable.
For 20 years, Limbs for Life has provided fully functioning prosthetic
care for amputees in need. Prosthetic devices help restore a person’s
basic motor skills, mobility, and independence, but many amputees
lack the financial resources to obtain adequate prosthetic care.

Adrianne Haslet-Davis announces
2016 Boston Marathon plans
(Courtesy CBS-Easton, MA)--For Boston Marathon survivor Adrianne HasletDavis, each small step she takes is a simple reminder of how far she’s come
and how she wants to inspire others in her shoes to do the same. HasletDavis announced last month that she is now training and will run the 2016
Boston Marathon on April 18.
“This is a way for me to give back. Not only to just physically run the
marathon, but to say a giant ‘thank you’ to everybody,” she says, “And also to
remember those who don’t have legs because of financial need.
Haslet-Davis lost part of her left leg in the 2013 marathon bombings. Three
years later, she hopes to be the first bombings survivor amputee to run the
entire 26.2-mile Boston Marathon. She is running to help raise money for
Limbs for Life, a nonprofit organization that provides limbs for amputees who
can’t afford it.
“This will give them the chance to dream big and run and dance and do
whatever it is they want to do,” Haslet said. “You feel so hopeless when you
don’t have a leg.”

A
Note
from
Director,
Lucy
Fraser:
At Limbs for Life, we are passionate about our mission – to provide quality
prosthetic care to amputees who cannot afford it.
From 2013 to 2015, we experienced a 43% increase in applications for financial
assistance. Our waiting list grew from 60 to 160 clients. Waiting time for funding
soared from 6 months to 16 months. In order to face this overwhelming challenge,
we resolved to cut overhead expenses and revamp application procedures.
In the past 16 months, we have moved our office to reduce rent, changed phone
and database systems to further reduce expenses, and applied for private
foundation assistance for a needed capital expense. Client Coordinator Rose
Young has amassed a wealth of knowledge about resources for prosthetic funding
across the U.S., resulting in referrals that more quickly serve the needs of some of
our applicants. We revised our client application and screening procedures to
ensure that new applicants do not wait 12 to 16 months for funding.
The bottom line is this: Limbs for Life is striving to better serve the needs of our
clients and be a better steward of your donations. While we work towards greater
efficiency in all areas, we still have 75 clients on the waiting list which equates to
$234,500 in financial assistance. Thank you for continued support for amputees in
need. We welcome your contributions and input at any time.
