Welcome
Invasive Plant Species
Outstaying Their Welcome
As you’re looking through the Winter
Activity Guide, you’ll find all your tried
and true favorites for youth, adults and
seniors. And, if you’re anything like me,
you’ll probably be looking for a class that
will help you shed the pounds you may
have gained from overindulging during the
holiday season!
For the little ones, we have sports and
fitness classes, as well as a Mother/
Daughter Yoga class. For the adults who
are looking for something to meet their
New Year’s resolution, you can find over
a dozen fitness classes ranging from
our traditional programs to the newest
workout craze, ballet-inspired exercise!
Barre Fusion combines yoga, dance,
and traditional workout moves. For our
customers who are 50+, we’re offering
Zumba Gold for the first time.
Speaking of the holidays, I am sure we
have all had holiday guests who outstayed
their welcome. In UA, we also have
some guests who have outstayed their
welcome – invasive species! Throughout
the community, we can see the ravaging
effects of Emerald Ash Borer. These
invasive insects are going to eliminate
our entire population of native ash trees,
opening up areas for several other invasive
species to take over. In order to combat
this plight, a new volunteer effort is
underway help. UA resident Annemarie
Smith is organizing the Upper Arlington
Weed Warriors, a network of volunteers
who will assist the UA Parks & Forestry
Division with invasive plant control
projects. Residents who are interested in
participating in one or more work days per
year should contact Annemarie to sign up.
The Upper Arlington Weed Warriors has a
Facebook page that you can “like” to
stay updated on invasive plant-related
events in Upper Arlington, or you
can contact Smith directly by email
at [email protected] or phone at
614-570-3412.
Volunteering is not only a great way to do
ON THE COVER: An ice carver impresses the crowd at Winter Festival.
something positive for our community, but
to get some outdoor exercise and meet new
people.
Let’s all make a commitment to get outside
and stay active this winter--it’s good for us
and our community!
Have a great holiday season and wonderful
winter.

Learn over 100 signs to use with your child. Classes are for parents/
caregivers and babies. In a playful, educational and language-rich
environment, caregivers and children build their American Sign
Language (ASL) vocabulary through instruction, interactive games
and songs. You learn recommended first signs; we discuss the
benefits of using ASL with infants and demonstrate easy techniques
for successfully integrating signs into everyday life. A $25 fee is due
to the instructor at the first class for a full-color MSH™ curriculum
book with a CD of the songs we teach. The books have pictures of
the signs learned along with descriptions for easy reference.

Stephanie Altieri
Does the princess in your palace love to dance? If so, come dance
with us! We have the perfect class for your budding ballerina. This
fun class introduces basic ballet vocabulary and movement while
building social and large motor coordination skills. A favorite
segment of class deals with traveling steps across the floor such as
gallops, skips and princess music with “watch me twirl” open dance
time. Ballerinas learn a new dance routine each session. This is a
ballerina-only class; however, parents are encouraged to attend
the last mini-recital class. Ballet shoes required, with a leotard and
tights preferred.

Camp Once In A While
Recreation Staff
Camp Once In A While is programmed for the occasional, drop-in or
intermittent camper. The difference between Camp Once In A While
and our other day camp programs is that the fee is a per hour fee,
versus a per day fee at the three full-time camps. Campers enjoy
the same activities described in the full-time camps, however Camp
Once In A While does not close for field trips which allows parents
attendance flexibility and cost savings. Should your child need to
attend an occasional full-day at camp, the per day fee cap is $35.
Campers should bring a daily sack lunch, water bottle/drink and
snack. Registration is limited and on a first-come, first-served basis.

Fitness Policies
Want to try a new class? Before committing, students may try out
one session of a class on the Fitness Schedule Grid with no payment
obligation . Introduce yourself to the instructor and complete the
fitness waiver.
Register on Time – Although participants may still enroll after
a fitness class begins, there is a revenue amount that needs to be
covered for a class to be financially viable. If we don’t reach that
target figure by the start date of the class, we may be forced to
cancel. To avoid unexpected cancellations of your regular class,
please register promptly.
Customize your program – Classes on the Fitness Schedule Grid
may be prorated. If you are unable to attend all of the scheduled
sessions in a section, we can adjust to the frequency or number of
classes that suits you best. Prorating must be done during your
initial transaction.
Because of increased staff time and the unpredictability of
class revenues due to prorating, the prorate fee reflects a slightly
increased rate per class. Enrolling for two days of a three-day-aweek class remains at the standard price per class. Prorating is not
available online.
ADULT
Missed a fitness class? – If you miss a class, make it up in any
other class on the Fitness Schedule Grid during the designated
section of your absence.
Missed class due to cancellation – LLL is unable to provide
refunds or credits for cancellations due to inclement weather or
building closures. Make-ups are available in any other Fitness Grid
class. Refunds or credits are given for instructor cancellations.

necklace. Dichroic glass is more expensive to purchase
and fire yet offers a more interesting creation. It contains
multiple micro-layers of metals or oxides giving the glass
dichroic optical properties, greatly expanding the array
of colors and the pop of the metals. This type of glass is a
very popular application in fused glass due to the shine and
diversity.

different shapes and colors. Use
ground glass particles called
“frit” in a variety of colors and
pour it into a mold to create

Pick your shape upon registration as cost varies. One shape

Create your own custom design using a 4 x 4 piece of clear
glass. Glue thin glass strips called stringers and pre cut
pieces of glass in a variety of colors, sizes and shapes. The
piece is taken to the studio to be fired and slumped into
a gorgeous votive in which you can place a candle. Watch
the light dance through your colored design! Slumping is a
technique that bends heated glass over in a mold in a kiln.
You won’t believe you made this beautiful art piece, sized

STAY UA
Since early 2009, the Services To Age in Your
Upper Arlington (STAY UA) program has been
making a meaningful difference in the lives of the
community’s elderly and frail residents when they
most need help. Thanks to STAY UA, when called
to the home of residents having issues living
independently, the City’s Fire Division emergency
responders can refer them to the STAY UA
Service Coordinator to help identify and connect
them with appropriate support resources. This
approach provides the missing link between first
responders and appropriate existing community
support services that can help prevent premature
admission to more costly institutionalized care.
Call 583-5114 or email [email protected] for more
details of this innovative support program.

Crepes of La Chandeleur
Josie Gonot, A Taste of France
February 2 in France still commemorates the old-world
holiday of La Chandeleur. According to custom, each family
member of age flipped a thin pancake from a hot iron skillet
high in the air while holding a gold piece in the left hand.
Success with this feat of culinary prowess insured goodness
and prosperity in the New Year. Let your modern hostess
handle the hot skillet. Guest simply take their still warm and
freshly-buttered delicacies off the floor (oops!) and onto a
waiting buffet table of delectable fillings, such as Nutella
and a variety of imported premium preserves from Bonne

chapeau for the February drawing of an imported French
home product valued $8-$10. Gentlemen always put their

Josie Gonot, A Taste of France
In the Pyrénees Mountains live the mysterious Basque
people. World linguists still cannot trace the origins of
their language. Originally armed by Franco, the Leftist
Basque political party, ETA, still pursues bloody violence in
an agenda to win separation from both France and Spain.
Several arrests were made in 2012 by the EU counterterrorism units. Is the Basque diet just too rich in goat
milk? Bull-fighting pants too tight? Well, just wait ‘till you
taste their food! Watch a video about these dangerous
cowboys while Josie serves a clandestine sample meal of

Getting Started on Pinterest
Shannon Chaney
First of all, what
is Pinterest? It’s a
virtual pinboard - like
corkboards. It lets you organize and share all kinds of things
you find on the web. People use pinboards to decorate
their homes, organize favorite recipes and so much more.
Join this demonstration class to learn the basics about
this interesting website. You must have an email address to
create a Pinterest account. Students should be familiar with
the basics of a computer and navigating the web. Maximum
12 participants.

Arlington Parks & Recreation Department office at 583-5300 or
Senior Center at 583-5320. A written statement (email or mail) is
needed to cancel.

house or Senior Center cancellation is made more than 90 days
prior to the rental date. A 50% refund is given when a shelter house

Refunds for emergency or hardship cases are made on a case-bycase basis. All decisions for a refund are at the discretion of the
Parks & Recreation Director.
Park Watch
Please help keep the parks safe, clean and enjoyable! Notify
the Parks & Recreation Department if you see any broken play
equipment, damaged park furniture or vandalism to athletic fields
and park facilities. Alcoholic beverages are NOT permitted in the
parks. Call 583-5300 during regular business hours to report any
issues. For more urgent situations or after hours, call the Police
Radio Room at 583-5411.
In public parks, dogs must be on a leash from 8 a.m.–8 p.m. during
Daylight Savings Time and 8 a.m.–5 p.m. during Eastern Standard
Time. Owners must clean up after their pet. Responsible pet owners
help insure the health, safety and welfare of all residents.
Inclement Weather
Athletic fields are rescheduled or refunds issued in case of
inclement weather and the playing field is too wet for play to
commence. A recorded message is placed on the Parks & Recreation
hotline (583-5345) to notify all users of field cancellations. Refunds
are not issued for shelter house reservations canceled due to
inclement weather. All shelter houses in our system are completely
enclosed and, therefore, not subject to weather cancellations.
Facility users assume the risk of undesirable weather conditions
when reserving a facility.
