Business. Imagined Better. Together.
Welcome
Your short guide to UCD Michael Smurfit
Graduate Business School
A warm welcome to UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School. We’re
Ireland’s leading business school and research centre, and part of University
College Dublin, which was founded in 1854 and today has a student
population of over 30,000, including 6,000 international students.
In the business school our students enjoy the unique benefits of Ireland’s
largest university yet the intimacy of a dedicated campus, and the expertise
of 50 years’ experience in delivering an international MBA qualification.
We’re proud to be the only business school in Ireland (and one of an elite
group worldwide) to hold the triple crown of accreditation from the three
centres of business and academic excellence, AACSB, EQUIS and AMBA.
These accreditations benchmark us against the best in the world, and are
your guarantee that you will receive a truly world-class business education.
Our courses are consistently ranked in the world’s top 100 by the Financial
Times and the Economist Intelligence Unit.
“The Smurfit MBA mission is to focus on
delivering the next generation of global
minds and business leaders who can make
a meaningful contribution to the societies
and economies they work in.”
Orla Nugent, MBA Course Director
“The UCD Smurfit MBA programme
was tough, but extremely rewarding.
Once I got into the rhythm and flow
of juggling things in the first
semester, it got easier and I loved it.
The knowledge I acquired through
the MBA gave me the overall
business foundation I was looking
for. I believe in hard work, focus and
action but a bit of fun along the way
can relieve stress. My classmates
were highly intelligent, fun, witty
and loved some healthy debate, so
we all learned a lot from each other,
as well as from the professors.”
Grainne Barron EMBA, Founder
& CEO Viddyad, Winner AMBA
Entrepreneurial Award 2014
“Our dedicated team of MBA
academics will guide you to
maximize your learning using
contemporary internationally
proven methodologies.”
Dr. Brian McGrath,
MBA Academic Director, UCD Smurfit School
The UCD MBA Difference
International Study Trip
A key differentiating feature of the UCD Smurfit
School MBA is its international orientation. The
study trip places the participant in a business
setting which is significantly different to their
day-to-day experience. This exposure provides
insight into market dynamics in a high-growth
economy. More importantly the experience will
challenge many of the assumptions about
management, business and political institutions
which we rarely confront.
Value of our Leadership
Development Programme
Leadership Skills
“While the modules and Study Team work will
enhance your competencies across a broad range
of functional areas, it’s also a great opportunity to
work on the ‘softer interpersonal skills’ which are
increasingly valued by employers.”
Simon Holmes, EMBA, Spinnaker Group
Coaching: Clearing the Path
“First and foremost, it is a great opportunity to
stand back and take stock. Too often we get
caught up in the hustle and bustle of everyday life
without having the chance to step back and take a
look from the outside in. It was also a great
opportunity to bounce ideas off my coach with a
view to clearing a path to where I wanted to go
with respect to a particular topic.”
Sinéad Bailey, EMBA, Bristol-Myers Squibb

“For me personally the Smurfit MBA was a fantastic
way to transition from a US centric career to a
Europe/Ireland based one. I was able to change my
vantage point using new frameworks & knowledge
from course modules, such as strategy & negotiation
skills. I developed a fresh perspective from the diversity
of the cohort - classmates with experiences from all
over the world representing multiple business sectors.
Finally, a chance to tie all the strands together and cement long term
profession & personal relationships through the international study trip.
If you like a personal challenge, and you’re looking to develop the network
& skills to make a life change, then this is the programme for you.”
