Christine Meneer, Executive Artistic Director
Meneer is the Executive Artistic Director of
C hristine
the professional ballet company, Ballet Theatre of Ohio,
formerly Children’s Ballet Theatre, founded in 1993. Ms.
Meneer is best known to Northeast Ohioans for producing
the magical holiday performances of the Nutcracker at the
Akron Civic Theatre for the past 16 years. She also serves
as the resident choreographer and costume designer for the
company.
Under Ms. Meneer’s artistic direction, the company has
grown from a pre-professional company to a thriving
professional company which has touched the lives of almost
200,000 people. BTO’s Nutcracker was voted “Akron’s Favorite Holiday Show” by
Akron Beacon Journal readers. Ms. Meneer is also the proud recipient of the 2007
Arts Alive! Award for Outstanding Artist in Dance presented by the Akron Area
Arts Alliance. In addition, Mayor Frank Larson selected the Christine Jones-Meneer
School of Dance as the recipient for the Mayor’s Award-Business of the Year, 2010.
Ms. Meneer has produced five full-length story ballets for Ballet Theatre of Ohio.
Audiences are most familiar with the holiday classic, The Nutcracker. Other
choreography credits include Coppélia, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, and her newest
ballet, The Wizard of Oz, premiered last May. Ms. Meneer has also choreographed
three repertory ballets - Rosso, Beyond the Stars and Under the Big Top.
Ms. Meneer danced professionally with Ohio Ballet under the direction of mentor
Heinz Poll and with Pennsylvania Ballet. Wishing to carry forward the high level of
training that she received, Ms. Meneer opened up her own dance studio, the Christine
Jones-Meneer School of Dance in Munroe Falls, which is now in its 26th season. Her
studio has become recognized as one of the best training grounds for young dancers
wishing to dance professionally. All dancers in this BTO performance are currently
training at the Christine Jones-Meneer School of Dance.

Jerry Burr - (Storyteller)
erry Burr comes from an international background of training
and performing. He was a founding member of the Joffrey Ballet
in its early New York City concerts. He has performed in over 22
countries. In Europe, Mr. Burr was a soloist with the American Festival
Ballet and the world renowned Netherlands Dance Theatre. He was
premier soloist and Assistant Ballet Master with the Zurich Opera House.
On the concert stage, he appeared with soloists from the Paris, Budapest
and Bolshoi Opera Ballets. He has appeared on ABC, CBS, and German
State Television, as well as Radio City Music Hall. Mr. Burr’s major
teachers were: Robert Joffrey, New York; Audrey de Vos, London;
Michele de Lutry, Zurich; and William Millie, Munich. He is also an
Emeritus Professor of Dance at The University of Akron.
BTO PROFESSIONALS
NATALIE ALEXIOU – (Gretel) Ms. Alexiou has danced many roles during
her eight years with Ballet Theatre of Ohio, her favorite being the Arabian
Princess in the Nutcracker. While training with Christine Jones-Meneer School
of Dance, she has been involved with the Nutcracker, Cinderella, Sleeping
Beauty, Coppélia, The Wizard of Oz, Beyond the Stars, and the Heinz Poll
Summer Dance Festival. Ms. Alexiou hopes to continue her dance career into
college, and study art and design.
JO ALSPAUGH – (Fairy of Happiness) Ms. Alspaugh
started formal ballet training at Chautauqua Regional Youth Ballet at age 16.
She attended summer programs at Pittsburgh Youth Ballet and American Ballet
Theatre as a mentor. Ms. Alspaugh graduated Summa Cum Laude with a double
major in Dance and World Languages and Cultures from Mercyhurst College in
Erie, Pa. While there, she danced in La Sylphide, La Bayadère, Coppélia as well
as principal roles in Ribollimento, Symphonie Italienne, Brahms Interlude, and
Sleeping Beauty. Ms. Alsphaugh also performed the role of the Princess in The
Snow Queen with Ballet Concerto and the Allegheny Regional Dance Theatre.
She toured New England with the Albany Berkshire Ballet’s production of the
Nutcracker. While performing with Ballet Theatre of Ohio, Ms. Alspaugh is also
currently attending law school at Case Western Reserve University.
ANDREA BLANKSTEIN – (Princess Aurora) Born in Boras, Sweden,
Ms. Blankstein began her career with Deutsche Oper Berlin, Germany, upon
invitation of Director Peter Schaufuss. Ms. Blankstein extended her performing
career with Cleveland/San Jose Ballet, Ballet Arizona, Milwaukee Ballet,
Virginia Ballet Theatre, State Street Ballet and Hawaii Ballet Theatre, appearing
in a wide variety of soloist and principal roles. At Ohio Ballet, Domey ReiterStoffer created the role of Miss Jessel for her in The Turn of the Screw. Last year
she performed the lead role in Cinderella with Ballet Western Reserve directed
by Richard Dickinson. While with BTO, Ms. Blankstein has performed various
lead roles including the Snow Queen in the Nutcracker, Aurora in Sleeping
Beauty, and the Good Witch of the North in The Wizard of Oz.
KIRSTEN BRAUN – (Snow White) Since joining Ballet Theatre of Ohio last
year, Ms. Braun has performed roles in the Nutcracker, The Wizard of Oz, and the
Heinz Poll Summer Dance Festival. She currently trains with Christine JonesMeneer School of Dance. In Ms. Braun’s 14 years of dance, she has studied in
summer programs with Boston Ballet, Orlando Ballet, and Central Pennsylvania
Youth Ballet. Ms. Braun has also performed with Cleveland San Jose Ballet,
Dancing Wheels, and Cleveland School of the Arts.
COURTNEY CLEMINSHAW – (Little Red Riding Hood) Ms. Cleminshaw
has been a Ballet Theatre of Ohio member for five years and has trained with
Christine Jones-Meneer School of Dance for 12 years. Ms. Cleminshaw
has performed various roles in the Nutcracker, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty,
and The Wizard of Oz. In 2006-2007, she performed the role of Clara in the
Nutcracker. Recently, Ms. Cleminshaw completed a five week summer
intensive with Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre where she performed in Carmina
Burana and choreographed her first piece. Ms. Cleminshaw plans to attend
college to pursue a degree in dance.

BTO PROFESSIONALS
MEGAN COLEMAN – (Lilac Fairy) Ms. Coleman trained in Michigan with
Samantha Shelton, Sherry Jerome and Christina Kammuller. She attended
summer programs with American Ballet Theatre, Joffrey Ballet and BalletMet
on scholarship. While attending Eastern Michigan University on a dance
scholarship, she won the Mid-Michigan National Society of Arts and Letters
ballet and modern dance scholarship competition. This is Ms. Coleman’s
second season with Ballet Theatre of Ohio. She has performed the roles of
Sugar Plum Fairy, Snow Queen, and Arabian Princess in the Nutcracker, and
the Wicked Witch of the West in The Wizard of Oz.
KATIE EDMONDS – (Princess Florine) Ms. Edmonds, training with
Christine Jones-Meneer School of Dance since age four, has been a Ballet
Theatre of Ohio company member for eight years. She has had many lead roles
in productions of the Nutcracker, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Coppélia, The
Wizard of Oz, Beyond the Stars, and I Had the Same Dream at the Heinz Poll
Summer Dance Festival. She was accepted on scholarship into BalletMet’s
summer study program in 2007. Ms. Edmonds plans to pursue a career in
ballet. She would like to thank all the people who have supported her.
SARAH RUESCH – (Ugly Step-Sister) Ms. Ruesch has been dancing since
age three and is currently in her seventh year of training at the Christine
Jones-Meneer School of Dance. This season begins her fourth year as a Ballet
Theatre of Ohio company member. While dancing with the company, she has
performed various roles in productions of the Nutcracker, Sleeping Beauty,
Cinderella, and The Wizard of Oz. Ms. Ruesch performed in her first Heinz
Poll Summer Dance Festival this past summer.
BRIDGITT STAUDT – (Fairy of Beauty) Ms. Staudt is currently in her 16th
year of training with Christine Jones-Meneer School of Dance. She has been
a part of Ballet Theatre of Ohio for eight years and has performed lead roles
in the Nutcracker, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, The Wizard of Oz, and Beyond
the Stars. This past summer she danced in her third Heinz Poll Summer Dance
Festival and has attended nine years of BTO’s summer dance study program.
Ms. Staudt is an honor student who plans to attend Wake Forest University.
KELSEY STINSON – (Cinderella) Ms. Stinson has been a member of
Ballet Theatre of Ohio for four years. She has performed in the Nutcracker,
Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, The Wizard of Oz, and the Heinz Poll Summer
Dance Festival. Her favorite role was the Spanish Señorita in the Nutcracker.
Ms. Stinson plans to dance for as long as possible as well as attend college
after graduation.

GUEST ARTISTS
GRANT DETTLING – (Hansel) Courtesy of Dayton Ballet. Mr. Dettling began his ballet
training at age 13 with Barbara Suzanne and Lynne Williams. As a scholarship student,
he received his professional instruction at the Pacific Northwest Ballet School, Seattle,
and the School of American Ballet, New York City. Mr. Dettling has performed with ABT
Studio Company, the Washington Ballet, Kansas City Ballet, Texas Ballet Theater, Ohio
Ballet and currently is with Dayton Ballet. Among the many roles that Mr. Dettling has
performed, his favorite roles in Alun Jones’ Romeo and Juliet, Jeffrey Graham Hughes’
Pygmalion & Galatea, Domy Reiter-Soffer’s A Turn of the Screw, Stuart Sebastian’s
“Dracula”, Karen Russo Burke’s A Streetcar Named Desire, Luis Montero’s La Casa de
Bernarda Alba, Septime Webre’s Peter Pan, and Balanchine’s Tchaikovsky Pas de Deux and Rubies. This is
Grant’s first appearance with Ballet Theatre of Ohio.
DAMIEN HIGHFIELD – (Prince Desire) Courtesy of GroundWorks DanceTheatre.
Mr. Highfield returns for his 11th year with Ballet Theatre of Ohio as a guest artist. Mr.
Highfield originated the role of Mars in BTO’s Beyond the Stars and performed with
BTO during the Heinz Poll Summer Dance Festivals. He has danced title roles in Hamlet,
Carmen, Dracula, the Nutcracker, Sleeping Beauty, Coppélia, Cinderella, and The
Wizard of Oz with various companies. Mr. Highfield was a featured choreographer for
Ohio Ballet’s Roots of Choreography and has created a full-length ballet, The Toymaker.
Mr. Highfield choreographs and teaches throughout Northeast Ohio.
GARY LENINGTON – (Cinderella’s Prince) Courtesy of Verb Ballets. A native of
Akron, Ohio, Mr. Lenington began his dance training with Nan Klinger and CVYB as
well as studying extensively with Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux at the Chautauqua Institute.
Mr. Lenington has appeared in various soloist and principal roles with the Richmond
Ballet and Ballet Florida including Romeo & Juliet, the Nutcracker, Lambarena, The
Moor’s Pavane, Elemental Brubeck, ...Smile With My Heart, Lady of the Camellas,
A Midsummers Night Dream, Carmina Burana, and Peter Martins’ Barber Violin
Concerto. As a member of Ballet Florida, he appeared twice in Le Temps D’Aimer at the
international dance festival held in Biarritz, France. He also performed in their debut at
the Joyce Theatre, New York City. Mr. Lenington attributes the longevity of his career
to his versatility as both a contemporary and classical dancer and is thankful to have had the privilege of
working with many influential teachers and choreographers in the dance world today.
KELLY MENEER – (Carabosse) Ms. Meneer is excited to be reprising the role of
Carabosse and dancing once again with Ballet Theatre of Ohio, where she was a soloist
with the original company for eight years. A graduate of Kent State University, Ms.
Meneer currently lives in New York City. She performs improv and sketch comedy at the
Peoples Improv Theater, Upright Citizens Brigade, and Magnet Theater. Theatre credits
include 42nd Street (Peggy Sawyer), A Chorus Line (Bebe), West Side Story (Anita),
Cabaret, Hair, Into the Woods, and Wild Party. She wishes to thank her friends and
especially her family for their love and support!
JUSTIN KOERTGEN – (Wolf) Courtesy of Dayton Ballet. Mr. Koertgen is currently
in his tenth season with the Dayton Ballet. He trained at Interlochen Center for the Arts,
Joffery Ballet School, and the San Fransisco Ballet. Some of his favorite roles have been
the title role in Christopher Flemming’s TOMMY, Romeo in Septime Weber’s Romeo &
Juliet, and the title role in Stuart Sebastion’s Dracula.
BRIAN MURPHY – (Blue Bird) Courtesy of Verb Ballets. Mr.
Murphy has danced as a guest artist with Ballet Theatre of Ohio since
2000. BTO lead roles include the Blue Bird in Sleeping Beauty and
the Cavalier and Snow King in the Nutcracker. He danced with Ohio Ballet for 10 years
as well as Cleveland/San Jose Ballet, Nashville Ballet, Richmond Ballet, BalletMet and
New Orleans Delta Ensemble throughout his career. Other lead roles include the Prince
and Jester in Cinderella, Franz and Dr. Coppelius in Coppéllia, Dracula and Renfield
in Dracula as well as various roles in Hamlet, Swan Lake, and Firebird. He toured with
Hoctor Dance Caravan and also has a wide range of modern, jazz and contemporary
experience. Mr. Murphy owns a Pilates studio and conducts ballet workshops.

Sleeping Beauty Synopsis
Once upon a time, there lived a King and Queen who had no children. When the
Queen gave birth to a daughter, the King was overjoyed and ordered an enormous
party to be held for her christening. Among the guests were fairies who presented
Princess Aurora with gifts of Happiness and Beauty. The Lilac Fairy was just about
to present her gift when there was a clap of thunder, and the evil fairy Carabosse flew
into the palace, enraged that she had not been invited to the party. She cast an evil
spell on Princess Aurora. The queen begged her to change her mind, but she refused.
The Lilac Fairy stepped forward, bestowed her gift, and said, “The Princess will prick
her finger, but she will not die. She will fall into a deep sleep and be awakened by the
kiss of a handsome Prince.”
The three fairies took Princess Aurora deep into the woods where Carabosse could
not find her. There they cared for her and protected her from Carabosse’s evil curse.
The disguised fairies and Aurora lived peacefully and happily in the woods, never
telling Aurora that she was a Princess. Over the years, Aurora met many friends and
grew into a beautiful young lady. One day, while she was frolicking in the woods with
her friends, Aurora met a young man with whom she fell in love. She did not know
that he was a Prince.
As Aurora’s sixteenth birthday drew near, the King and Queen summoned the
fairies to return to the castle with Aurora. They were unaware that Carabosse was also
preparing for Aurora’s return to the kingdom.
All the Royals in the land gathered to welcome Aurora. Four Princes arrived to ask
for her hand in marriage. Out of nowhere, an old beggar woman appeared and cast a
spell on Aurora. She was lured into the attic, which held the last remaining spinning
wheel in the kingdom. Princess Aurora reached out to touch it and pricked her finger.
Princess Aurora fell to the ground. The King and Queen were beside themselves with
grief.
In triumph, the old woman threw off her disguise and revealed herself as Carabosse,
claiming to be the most powerful fairy in the land. Yet, the Lilac Fairy reminded
everyone that Aurora would not die, she would simply lay there sleeping until a
handsome Prince kissed her. So Aurora would not be alone, the Lilac Fairy cast a spell
on the entire court, putting them all to sleep. A thick hedge of thorns grew up around
the castle, shielding it from view. Carabosse, angered by the Lilac Fairy, vowed to
guard the palace so that a Prince would NEVER find Princess Aurora.
Many years later, the handsome Prince Desire was hunting in the forest. The Lilac
Fairy appeared and showed him a vision of Princess Aurora. She told him the story
of the beautiful Sleeping Beauty. The Prince fell in love with the young Princess. He
begged the Lilac Fairy to take him to her.
The Lilac Fairy led Prince Desire through the woods to the vine-covered castle.
Behind the thick hedge of thorns and vines, he saw Sleeping Beauty. The Prince
battled with Carabosse and eventually defeated her. Prince Desire rushed back to the
beautiful Sleeping Beauty and he kissed her. Aurora opened her eyes, and instantly
the entire court came to life. Carabosse and her urchins fled deep into the woods. The
spell was broken.
The King and Queen were delighted, and Princess Aurora and Prince Desire were
to be married. There was a great celebration in honor of the wedding. The entire
kingdom joined in the festivities. They were all overjoyed as Princess Aurora and
Prince Desire proclaimed their love for each other. The Lilac Fairy returned to bless
the marriage, and all lived happily ever after.

3 years old
Natalie started dancing at
the age of two. She danced
in her first Nutcracker
as an angel and little
Chinese, moving up to her
favorite role as the Arabian
Princess. Preparing for
BTO’s first February
Repertory is Natalie’s
favorite memory. She
plans to attend Bowling
Green University and
continue dancing.

Kirsten Braun
4 years old
Kirsten has been training
in classical ballet for 14
years and credits the past
two years with Ballet
Theatre of Ohio for
teaching her more than
just how to dance. Kirsten
will be attending Boston
University and plans
to never stop dancing.
Kirsten says dancing
is a mindset. It’s about
working hard but making
it appear easy!

Katie Edmonds
Dancing since age
four, Katie is currently
performing her favorite
role as Princess
Florine. Katie’s advice:

be inspired by those you
look up to. Katie plans
to pursue a professional
dance career.

Bridgitt started dancing when
she was two. Her favorite
role was the Soldier Doll in
the Nutcracker. She plans to
attend Wake Forest University,
continuing in ballet and
possibly majoring in early
childhood education. Bridgitt’s
advice: If you do what makes
you happy, add some hard
work and a pinch of luck, any
goal can be reached!

Kelsey has been a
Ballet Theatre of Ohio
member for four years.
Her favorite role was the

Nutcracker. Kelsey will
