One solution is the creation of neighborhood parks on school property A recent example is our support of the Bexar County 2008 visitor tax – SPARKs. Rather than padlocking school playgrounds at the end of the extension, which provided funds to develop 13 sports facilities. Fully day, San Antonio Sports leads this school park initiative that creates constructed, these facilities are hosting youth sports teams and national attractive, functional spaces with walking trails, exercise stations and competitions. other enhancements that can be enjoyed by students during the day and the neighborhood after school hours. SPARK partners include San Antonio City Council, San Antonio Parks & Recreation, area school districts and the UTSA Department of 14 Completed SPARKs since 2012 Architecture. Councilman Ron Nirenberg, District 8, said, “It’s a pleasure to partner with San Antonio Sports to bring these vibrant green spaces to our neighborhoods. Having a SPARK within walking distance from home encourages families to be active together.” NORTHSIDE SWIM CENTER Constructed with funds from the 2008 Bexar County visitor tax extension and Northside ISD, the Northside Swim Center is now a state-of-the-art swimming and diving facility. Children take swim lessons, swim teams train and adults swim daily laps here. And in 2015, it was the site of four 2 Under contract; 2 nearing completion major swim competitions, including USA Swimming’s Phillips 66 National Championships. ALAMODOME Not only is the Alamodome San Antonio Sports’ home, it is the centerpiece of sports facilities in San Antonio. In 2015, the San Antonio 6 School districts and one charter school represented City Council approved $43 million in renovations, which was the critical piece in our winning bid for the 2018 NCAA® Men’s Final Four®. At the request of the City of San Antonio and Bexar County, San Antonio Sports also maintains a 20-year facilities plan that assesses the needs of the community. It is available as a resource to identify opportunities for 5 facility growth and programming. SPARKs planned for 2015-16 10 11 VENTS THAT IMPAC E V E N T S T H AT I M PAC T O U R ECO N O MY N C A A® F I N A L F O U R ® San Antonio Sports is a critical member of the San Antonio Local Organizing Committee. Also including the City of San Antonio and UTSA, S.A.L.O.C. is responsible for hosting three NCAA® Men’s Final Fours® and two NCAA® Women’s Final Fours® . In 2015, we were thrilled to be awarded the 2018 NCAA® Men’s Final Four® and plans are underway to deliver the best collegiate basketball championship ever. The last time the Final Four was in San Antonio, spectators and participants enjoyed the convenience of a walkable event “The committee and the college basketball community is pretty excited about going back to San Antonio.” Since our first Final Four in 1998, San Antonio has earned a reputation as a favorite destination of college basketball teams and fans. Our beautiful footprint between the Alamodome, hotels and ancillary events. As the rendering shows, the footprint gets even smaller after the transformation of the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center and Hemisfair Park is complete. The NABC Convention, Final Four Fan Fest, the March Madness Music Festival and other events programmed in to the convention center and park become that much closer to the action at the Alamodome, making San Antonio the easiest Final Four city to experience. Dan Gavitt, VP, NCAA® Men’s Basketball walkable downtown, easily accessible airport and friendly volunteers have given us a stellar reputation. And while everyone is having a great time, make no mistake, the economic value of hosting a Final Four is real. Conservative estimates put the impact of the 2018 Final Four at roughly $80 million. 12 13 VENTS THAT IMPAC E V E N T S T H AT I M PAC T O U R ECO N O MY E V E N T S T H AT I M PAC T O U R CO M M U N I T Y THE YEAR OF SWIMMING V I VA S WI M F O R L I F E 2015 was the Year of Swimming in San Antonio.
