button
Rachel Draper (left) and Amanda Hendrickson
For over 25 years, the locally designed, unique Harbor
Days button has been sold for $2 as the primary fundraiser for
the festival. It is asked that everyone who is able to purchase a
button does so, as your “admission” to our free events.
Each year, The Elk Rapids Harbor Days Association
MARKET
holds a competition for the design of the button. All ages are
invited to create a button design using all their creativity to
display their love passion for the festival. The 2015 Elk Rapids
Harbor Days button contest design winner is Rachel Draper of
Elk Rapids. Rachel has lived in Elk Rapids for almost 5 years
and said her inspiration for the design came not only from
all the things she loves about Elk Rapids and Harbor Days,
boating, fireworks, the carnival and beach, but also from the
60 year history. “I wanted to do half black and
white and the other half color to show then
and now how it’s been an amazing event for
60 years.” Rachel lives in Elk Rapids with her fiance and
two labradoodles and is a dental hygienist in Kalkaska.
The 2015 button contest runner up is Amanda
Hendrickson, a lifelong Elk Rapids resident.

Miss Elk Rapids
MEET
The Miss Elk Rapids Scholarship Program has
rich history, dating back to 1929. The program,
originally created to select a representative to send
to the National Cherry Queen competition, has
proudly continued the tradition of selecting
outstanding young ladies to represent,
promote and encourage tourism in the Elk
Rapids area. Miss Elk Rapids now earns
a significant educational scholarship and
the opportunity to invite and welcome
visitors to Elk Rapids through the
promotion of Harbor Days and other
community events during her reign.
This year’s representative, Mary
Kate Klein, was selected in February to
begin her one year reign. She is a 2015
graduate of Elk Rapids High School where
she excelled academically and in a board
spectrum of extracurricular activities. While in
high school, she was an active member of the student
council and served as president of her senior class. In
addition, she lettered in women’s varsity soccer for four
years and served as team captain her senior year. She
participated in the school’s spring musical productions
for several years and was also a member of the choral
ensemble and chamber choir. She was a member of
the school’s Peer-to-Peer program, a groups that meets
monthly to guide socially challenged peers and help them
overcome social barriers. She was an active member of
the National Honor Society and Interact Club - a service
club led by students and sponsored by Rotary. This fall
she will attend Grand Valley State University with plans
to pursue a double major in marketing and management
and ultimately pursue a career in nonprofit business.
2015
On behalf of Mary Kate and her court,
welcome to Elk Rapids! We hope to see you
at many of the Harbor Days events.
Mary Kate’s court includes:
Kaylee Coy - MISS TEEN
Frannie Klein - MISS PRE-TEEN
Lindsay Hayes - YOUNG MISS

Grand Marshal 2015
ROB FORD
The Board of Directors for Harbor Days is pleased to
announce the selection of Rob Ford as Parade Grand Marshal in
this, our 60th year of celebration. “I would be thrilled to serve,”
said Ford, when told of his selection.
Ford, who has lived in Elk Rapids since 1987, has been
announcing the Parade since 2001. After serving a couple of
years on the Elk Rapids School Board, Ford opened Riverside
Title Company in 1992.
While Ford plans to pursue other interests at the end of
this year---which include writing a couple of books---he also
intends to stay somewhat involved in the business. As Ford
puts it, “I guess I will always be an underwriter emeritus.”
Speaking of Harbor Days Ford adds, “I have always been a
big fan. I think it puts our best foot forward.”
The Harbor Days Board is delighted with the selection of
Rob Ford as this year’s Grand Marshal and we thank Rob for all
the good things he does for the Elk Rapids community.

performance at a backyard spring graduation party. They
appear at private parties, music festivals, and monthly at
Little Bohemia in Traverse City, MI.
The group consists of Tim Wheatley, Tom
Wyant, Kim Dorgan, Jeff Haag and Dave Swan.
With a repertoire of over 150 songs - about
70% classic rock (stuff we all grew up with and
like) and 30% contemporary rock (stuff we still
listen to and like), the shows are customized to
our listening audience and designed to get you on
your feet and dancing.
Geezer is available for private events and

Armed with a passion for making music and
connecting people through his live performances, Jeremy
(brotha James) Reisig brings non-stop enthusiasm and
endless energy that leaves his audiences asking for more.
Combining clever, uplifting lyrics with danceable
beats, brotha James masters a distinctive combination of
dance/ hip hop/pop to create his distinctive style. His
ability to engage the audience creates an environment
that encourages interaction through sing-along songs,
dancing, and playing percussion instruments along with
brotha James.
His lyrics speak to being a dreamer, following the
passion for what makes one happy, showing gratitude for
simple things, and holding on to the moments that are
filled with joy.
Whether performing at a small club, entertaining at
a private party, or taking the stage in a stadium, playing
music for brotha James is not just a job; it is his passion,
his calling, his reason for being.
Honest, Earthy and Genuine ~ Blues, Soul and R&B
Big Boss Blues is one of the hardest working blues
roots bands hailing from West Michigan (Grand Rapids,
Kalamazoo and Battle Creek). These four men have a
passion for powerhouse rhythm and blues music that
transports their listeners to some steamy club, where the
smoke is blue, the atmosphere is alive and the music is
gut-wrenchingly powerful. With nearly a century of blues
performance history, these musicians perform blues, soul
and R&B covers and original music paying tribute to a
musical era made famous by the blues greats; Freddie
King, Albert King, Howlin’ Wolf and Little Walter.

Leave time between listening to local bands and watching the fireworks to view
the Boat Lighting Display. The marina will be glowing with boats and entertainment
docks decorated in festive bright lights. Be sure to pick up a “People’s Choice” ballot at the harbor office to vote for your favorite display. Voting is simple - write
down the boat number, drop it off at the harbor office. On Sunday, August 9, the
top three winners will proudly be showing off their ribbons.
