New Appointments FROM THE CHAIRMAN, Don Leombruno On behalf of the Board and the Committee I would like to welcome all our families and in particular all the players for Season 2016. This year has seen more growth in our great game at Campbelltown with 36 Junior teams with around 420 players plus Senior Men and Senior Women teams bringing the number to in excess of 500 players. This is fantastic for our Club. As we all know running a Club of this size is a huge challenge and without the help of many volunteers, coaches, team managers and admin staff this is not possible. So a big thankyou to everyone involved. Also a big thankyou to Linda and the Junior Committee who continually put in endless time to make sure the Juniors are running well. This year we have some challenges with replacing Michael Matricciani in the role of Technical Director. I can say that we are currently going through a process and the Board, along with communication with our coaches, are working to find the right person for our Club. We are happy to have Steve Whitehead with Michael Menechella and Steve Leo appointed as Skills Acquisition Coaches for the Under 11s down. I would like to give everyone an update on our Lights Project for Pitch 1. At this stage we are currently working together with the Campbelltown City Council and have been successful in obtaining a Grant for the lights on a 50/50 basis. We will know very soon who the contractor will be for the project. We are hoping to have the lights installed by August to host a night game against Adelaide United Youth. We will provide updates once we have a definite time of installation. Our Seniors won the first game of the second round on the weekend against Birkalla and have had a very good start to the season with 8 wins 2 draws and 2 loses and sitting second at the half way mark. This season has seen some new players come in to our Senior team with our own squad from last season playing some very exciting football. The Under 18s and Reserves continue to improve and develop putting pressure on the Senior men. On the Women’s side they also have started the season well and continue to enjoy and develop the growth at our club. This is our first season back on the Senior Women leagues thanks to a huge effort from Angelo Maio. Angelo has been very proactive and worked hard looking after all our Girls’ and Women’s teams . So in closing please enjoy the great facility we have here and most of all enjoy your children’s involvement in our great game. Regards DON LEOMBRUNO. *** Skills Acquisition Coaches Steve Whitehead (left) has been appointed the Skills Acquisition Coach for Under 9 to Under 11s. Angelo Maio Alex Chidiac BIG SUCCESS AT NATIONAL FUTSAL CHAMPIONSHIPS FOR FFSA FFSA representative teams were extremely successful at the recent National Futsal Championships held in Sydney, with the under 16 girls making their final and the under 15 boys returning home as champions of Australia. Junior and senior squads, both male and female locked horns in a week of fierce competitive futsal, culminating in an exciting finals day at Sydney Olympic Park. Hosted by Football NSW, it is one of Australia’s biggest sporting events and is where the best of the best come to compete. The annual National Championships are played at various locations across Sydney, with entire FFSA cohort based at Valentine Sports Park, the home of Football NSW. Formally held in Canberra, 2016 commemorated 35 years of the National Championships, proving the long standing love of the game at this level. This playing approach was applied by head of futsal in South Australia and Ex Adelaide United star, Cristiano Dos Santos who focuses on a tactical counter attacking playing style, with emphasis on quick ball movement and rotation. The huge success of all the teams at this year’s championships accentuated the hard work and preparation that was put in by all players, coaches, managers and FFSA staff. Seven out the twelve teams reached the semi-finals, with the Under 16 Girls proceeding to the Final, FFSA Game Development Manager John Mundy was extremely pleased with the results, stating on the FFSA website “This has been a remarkable tournament for FFSA”. The second team to reach the Grand Final was the Under 15 boys, who after an extremely intense emotive final, overcame tournament favourites New South Wales Lightning, winning 43 to claim the trophy. Coach Chris Higgins stressed “The importance of consistency and exceptional team effort as key factors in the victory.” Impressively, five of the ten players from the championship winning side were from Campbelltown Soccer Club and all agree that Futsal has made a huge difference to the way they play the outdoor game. Another special mention goes to Phillip Cash from Whyalla, who proved that there are pathways to high level futsal through the FFSA and that great opportunities aren’t just available to metro players. Futsal is a fast paced, high action game of skill, hard work and tactical awareness. Originally from South America, it is an indoor five a side adaption of football. Although futsal is more prominent in South America and Asia, the Futsalroos who are the Australian National Team are ranked 23rd in the world, which highlights the growth this sport has had in recent years. Footballing legend Pele grew up playing futsal and says “I played futsal growing up in Brazil. In futsal you need to think quick and play quick so it’s easier for you when you move to normal football”. The praise for futsal and the skills it equips you with, doesn’t stop with Pele, as players such as Neymar Jr, Ronaldinho and many others dedicate their incredible ability to Overall, the success of all the teams at the 2016 National Futsal the futsal they played in their youth. Championships highlights the importance this format holds in This year 12 FFSA representative teams took part in the modern game. The outstanding achievement of the Under 15 tournament, with squads ranging from Under 12 Development boys will hopefully inspire many more players to take part in (Under 11 players who took part in the Under 12 competition) next year’s tournament and allow Futsal to keep growing in Boys all the way through the Under 19 Women, as well as an this country. AWD team. The playing style and philosophy was consistent throughout every age group, with a style emulating that of the national team, coached by Rob Varela. The objective of playing Louis Nye a similar style to each other and to the national team has two benefits; one, it gives players who are exceptionally good the tactical knowledge they will need to progress to high level futsal and two, it means all the FFSA teams are playing with an effective game plan, giving them the best chance of success. to go to the next 2 penalties - which no one was keen to take. I nominated the next 2 players (Robert Maio and John Luke Gagliardi). Both scored along with one scorer from Soccer De Brazil making the scores 5-4 our way with Soccer De Brazil still to take their fifth penalty. Soccer De Brazil stepped up for their 5 th penalty shot. Vinnie Milanese (GK) stood cool, calm and collected and saved the penalty sending us through to the major semi-final. The entire stadium erupted and we all jumped up with emotion and ran to Vinnie to praise him and celebrated. On January 4th 2016 I took an Under 10 futsal team over to Melbourne to represent the South Australian in the Futsal Oz 2016 Juniors National Cup, an opportunity given to us by Raff Frisina and Jamie Carbone, Directors of the South Australian Futsal League. The team named “Campbelltown City (SA)” consisted of all Campbelltown City 2015 Under 10 players: Franco Crescitelli, Liam DeCorso, Robert Maio, Matthew Maio, Vinnie Milanese, John Luke Gagliardi, Anthony Lanzotti and Jack Lazzaro. They had only 1 training session together before we left on a journey that would go on to be a lifetime experience for these kids. There were 12 teams in the Under 10 competition - 2 from Western Australia, 3 from Sydney, 2 from Brisbane, 4 from Victoria. Our team was the only South Australian representative. The competition was separated into 3 groups of 4, so every team in their groups played each other twice. After the group stage competition each group ladder was combined into one ladder and then the finals series was created based on each team’s placing. Our team finished top of our group - winning all of our 6 group stage games - and finished equal top (3rd overall on percentage) and therefore qualified for the finals series. Our first final was the quarter final against Soccer De Brazil (NSW). WOW what a game! Prior to this game no one would have expected it to be the game of the tournament. The tournament director, along with all the staff at Futsal Oz, congratulated us on the win and commented that it was the most exciting game in the history of Futsal OZ. They were still talking about the game the next day. Come Sunday morning we played our major semi-final which proved to be a hard fought battle against Pascoe Vale FC who are a full time Futsal club and reigning back to back champions. Unfortunately our team went down 9-3 to Pascoe Vale and our unbelievable and unbeaten run of 8 games in 4 days came to an end in the major semi-final. The journey was over for these brave hearted and spirited Under 10 players - only 1 game away from playing in the grand final. As expected, Pascoe Vale went on to win the grand final against the Western Australian team who -like our team - were the other team along with Pascoe Vale to be undefeated in the group stages. It was an amazing achievement by our boys to get so far in this tournament and they surpassed all of our expectations. Their achievement, along with the experience of this tournament and the penalty shoot-out quarter final win, will be a lifetime experience that they will never forget. It was an honour to coach these 8 young and talented kids, who did everyone proud. A big thank you to Peter Milanese who was my assistant throughout this tournament for all his hard work and support our success would not have been possible without him. Also a big thank you to all the players and their parents for their support throughout the tournament. After starting the game “on fire” we were up 4-1 within 7 minutes before Soccer de Brazil turned the game around to be in It was a privilege to represent Campbelltown City SC in this front 7-5 with only a minute and a half to go. tournament and an experience that I will always remember. Our boys continued to press forward and, with the true Michael Crescitelli Campbelltown City spirit, never gave up. We equalised right on the full time whistle at 7-7 which took the game into extra time. An intense 1st half of extra time saw both teams scoreless and at half time of the extra time we were still locked in at 7-7. Enter the 2nd half of extra time and Soccer De Brazil drew first blood and scored and took it to 8-7. Within minutes our boys responded and it was 8-8. The atmosphere was electrifying and the entire arena had stopped and moved to watch our game. The whistle blew at the end of extra time with scores locked in at 8-8 resulting in a penalty shootout. We needed to nominate our first 3 penalty takers. All the boys were very nervous and only 2 put up their hands. I then decided the first 3 penalty takers, followed by the next 2 in case it got to that stage. We scored our first 3 penalties (Liam DeCorso, Vinnie Milanese (GK) and Matthew Maio) as did Soccer De Brazil. It therefore had Pizza Every Friday Training Night in our Junior Club Rooms Dine in or Take Away All Welcome! Canteen Duty Each team is asked to provide 3 volunteers/session. OUR FOOTBALL PHILOSOPHY We subscribe to our National Football Philosophy as outlined by the Football Federation of Australia in the following stamen of a national playing style: “A proactive brand of football, based on effective possession with the cutting edge provided by creative individuals. Defensively the key components are quick transition and intelligent collective pressing. The Playing Style is underpinned by a strong ‘team mentality’, capitalising on Australia’s traditional strengths.” Further than this... Our Youth Development Program works on the TIPS model of Technique, Insight, Personality and Speed. Our philosophy, which values the ball over the athlete, skill over strength, and intelligence over effort is focused on producing players who: Understand the game; Can control and manipulate the ball with great skill, they are comfortable on the ball. Maintain possession both individually and collectively, (in this club we govern the ball individually and as a team.) Intelligently & creatively construct an attack (we encourage them to take risks) Finish decisively Respond well in defence. Play fair Tactical emphasis is placed on the following points: To play the ball on the ground at all times, which requires both supporting play, players creating angles and good technique To play short passes, which requires players to support each other in attack and defence, and is harder to defend against and anticipate; To play longer balls only in response to a movement by a team-mate who moves and asks for the ball after which the pass is delivered; To play longer passes, and particularly those in the air, predominantly only when there is no closer option and into the feet of an attacker; continued... OUR FOOTBALL PHILOSOPHY (...continued) To encourage young keepers in playing the ball short when taking goal kicks, unless there is no other option and AT ALL times have the keeper roll the ball to a team-mate so the team can begin to build play from the back; To at all time play short quick corners. To play all free kicks in the back and middle third short and quick. If, at any time, a player has no option to find a team-mate, they should be encouraged to keep the ball. This may mean shielding it, keeping it moving to wait for a pass, or to dribble forward to attack an opponent. At no time should they be told to kick it away regardless of the position they play or where they are on the field; To encourage players to express themselves through their football and recognise that everyone is not the same, and shouldn’t play so. Some play fast, others slow, some play simple, others read situations and find more complex solutions, and some have enough skill to individually dominate a game, while others can only dream of doing so, but all should be allowed to find their own game not forced to conform to a uniform way of playing; To slow down and relax, or more specifically, vary the speed (tempo) of play during a game, which requires a team to hold the ball. After working to recover possession, every team should break forward only if they have an advantage in attack, otherwise they should slow the play down and possess the ball, back and across the field, resting and starting to position themselves in attack to take advantage of overloads in numbers, or weaknesses in defence. Our coaches understand that the object of football is to keep the ball and to score goals through breaking down a defence with passing and skill, not by booting the ball forward hoping for a defensive mistake. Training sessions are almost always completely with the ball, with every player touching the ball between 500 and 1000 times, refining technique and 1 v 1 skills, learning the game principally by playing in small games of 2 v 2, 3 v 3, 4 v 4, 5 v 5 and overload practices such as 4 v 2, 4 v 3, 5 v 2. Our coaches are encouraged to value the player’s technique and tactical awareness over all other attributes. **** Football Insurance The FFA National Insurance Programme website is provided so that Players & Club Administrators throughout Australia may have immediate access to the policy benefits and procedures of the insurance programme. FFA, State and Territory Member Federations and Gow-Gates remain committed to providing the football community with a first class Sports Insurance Programme whilst maintaining the affordability of registration. Whilst the plan provides basic levels of cover for players and others participating in Football, it is not all encompassing (this is necessary to keep the cost of insurance affordable for players) and does not seek to replace the need for private health and other insurances. FFA encourages all players and officials to take out their own private health insurance, life insurance and ‘Top Up’ coverage over and above the coverage provided under this plan. Gow-Gates can assist in regard to ‘Top Up’ insurance and other insurance requirements.
