Lymphedema Matters A publication of the Lymphedema Association of Ontario Summer 2013 President’s Report Volume 16 Issue 3 by Kim Gagan It’s been a very busy year at the LAO. I’m very excited to announce that our Board of Directors has expanded. This year we welcome four new faces to join our small but mighty Board: Dr. John Crawford joins us from Guelph. He is an Associate Professor at the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College and brings a wealth of experience to the post. Ben Ciallella is Managing Director at the National Bank of Canada in Toronto. His financial expertise and strategic thinking will no doubt prove very valuable in his new role as Treasurer. Matthew Fawcett brings strong interpersonal skills and customer service experience to our board. His commitment and enthusiasm are much appreciated. Barbara Foster is an Investment Advisor with TD Waterhouse. She brings with her excellent communication skills and vast experience volunteering with charitable committees and Boards. We look forward to the fresh ideas and enthusiasm that these new members of our team will no doubt bring to the table. We recently held our Annual Full Day Planning Meeting in May. Board Officers for this coming year were appointed as follows: Ben Ciallella was named Treasurer; Janice Goldberg will continue in her role as Secretary; Leona Dicasmirro will continue as Vice-President; and I (Kim Gagan) am pleased to continue as President. Our planning day was a chance to review our successes from the past year and focus on new goals. We celebrated many successes the past twelve months We organized a fantastic fall conference that once again attracted International presenters. Our conference was exceptionally well attended by both patients and professionals. We received excellent feedback from participants with an overall 95% satisfaction rating. (From left to right) Top row: Dr. John Crawford, Janice Goldberg, Barbara Foster, Matthew Fawcett, Kim Gagan, Ben Ciallella; Bottom row: Anna Kennedy, Leona Dicasmirro, Fran Suran, Ruby Kreindler We published our Annual Resource Guide as well as managed the production of four new issues of the national magazine and Lymphedema Matters. Pathways has been very well received and is increasing the profile of lymphedema across Canada. The LAO is proud to be managing this project on behalf of the Canadian Lymphedema Framework. continued on page 7... 815 2 Lymphedema Matters Summer 2013 Executive Director Update by Anna Kennedy Matters newsletter. Drop us a line if you have ideas of the type of news you would like to see covered in future communications. Website improvements Be sure to check out the LAO website to see changes we have made to make it easier for our website visitors to find important resources. New buttons have been added to the homepage on where to find a therapist, how to locate a fitter or product supplier, and which schools to contact for lymphedema training. Also new to our website, we have added an option to buy or renew your membership online. Just click the “Join the LAO” box on the homepage to fill our your membership. You can also purchase or renew your membership when you register for the conference - just click on the “2013 Conference” box to learn more. Partnering with other organizations 3M Canada sponsored a power breakfast at the Canadian Association of Enterostomal Therapy conference recently in Toronto. I was honoured to be their guest speaker and given the opportunity to promote awareness for lymphedema and the need for education. We are very busy working on this years’ collaborative national conference with the Canadian Lymphedema Framework. Registration is now open, and delegates will get the opportunity to hear from top experts on lymphedema, including: Dr. Stanley Rockson, Dr. Catherine McCuaig, Dr. Paula Stewart, and many more. This year’s event will be held at the Sheraton Toronto Airport and Conference Centre. Register now, before the Early-bird deadline of September 1st! Fundraising initiatives We are currently organizing local fundraising events in various communities and really need your help. With no government funding, we rely on donations to support our operating expenses that produce the programs and services to the community. Please consider ideas of how you can generate some donations for the LAO. It can be as simple as organizing a street garage sale or bake sale and donating the funds to the LAO. Give us a call with your idea and we can support you with flyers, posters and donor records etc. Or, if you would like to join one of our already planned initiatives, let us know! Communication In an effort to be more connected on a regular basis with our members – we hope you are enjoying our regular electronic newsletters. These e-blasts ensure that you stay informed of important news and events between mailing of our quarterly Lymphedema Summer 2013 Educational pamphlet We are eagerly awaiting a new national lymphedema educational pamphlet being worked on by the Canadian Lymphedema Framework. This educational tool will be available to all provincial associations, including the Lymphedema Association of Ontario, to customize and distribute to our key stakeholders. If you know of lymphedema contacts who would benefit from having these new pamphlets (i.e. doctors, nurses, therapists, family members, or oncology clinics), please let us know and we will reach out to them. Books for Sale We are always encouraging our key contacts at hospitals in Ontario to purchase two or three key books about lymphedema for their patient libraries. These books are valuable resources to newly diagnosed patients as well as experienced patients, caregivers and health professionals - there is something for everyone. You can help by asking the contact at the patient library of your local hospital whether they would carry lymphedema books and directing them to the LAO website for a great selection of lymphedema books. Summer Student For the past six years the LAO has been fortunate to receive a subsidy from the Canada Summer Jobs Program to hire a university student. Our staffing resources are limited, so the support that a summer intern gives, supplements the work done by myself and Shannon throughout the year. Aly Bishop, a second year Queens University BComm Student will be focusing her efforts on helping us add more oncology clinics, family physicians and other recipients to our distribution list for lymphedema awareness flyers. She will also support our fundraising efforts by creating donor analysis and recruiting local businesses to donate supplies and services for our charity walk. Summer 2013 Continued from page 1 We have started connecting with our members more regularly through weekly e-blasts. Shannon Moore (our indispensible Outreach and Event Planner), has been sending electronic updates to all our members, to keep you informed as to what is new and exciting at the LAO. If you have not been receiving these, please contact us to make sure we have your most current e-mail. You can also now follow us on Facebook and Twitter. Our expanded use of technology continued at our Annual General Meeting. We once again hosted this meeting by webinar, allowing members from all across the province to join us from the comfort of their homes. We were grateful to Dr. Kathleen Francis, who was our guest speaker and gave us an update on lymphedema research initiatives. Our fundraising through the Scotia Charity Challenge last fall raised over $22,000. This was largely accomplished by a handful of people including our Board members and their close family and friends. Thanks to the teams in Kitchener, ThunderBay and Niagara for holding their own local event. Although this is an impressive amount for such a small group, we hope to increase participation and donations this year by holding our own walk, away from the crowds and chaos of a downtown Toronto marathon. Check out the back page for more details on where and when this will be held, so that you can join us in Toronto or in your local community. We have some upcoming changes This year, our beloved Executive Director, Anna Kennedy, announced her intention to scale back her involvement in the day-to-day operation of the LAO, to allow more time and energy to her roles within the lymphedema community at a Canadian and International level. This presents the LAO with a tremendous challenge. Finding someone to replace Anna will be a daunting task. She has been a remarkable driving force in our organization and will be missed. Fortunately, Anna is not gone yet and she will be actively involved in a transition plan to find and mentor her replacement over the next 12 months. This year, we must focus our goals We no doubt have an interesting year ahead of us. With the anticipated transition to a new Executive Director on the horizon, and a challenging economy, we need to focus on strengthening our organization. We must continue to build our membership, increase our donations and double our fundraising efforts. With all of our successes, the professional level of services we provide, and events we deliver, it is easy to forget that we are still a very small organization. We have two employees and a small, dedicated Board of directors. We do not receive any government funding. Everything we do, is funded by donations, membership fees and the modest revenues we attain from our events and fundraising efforts. This year we need everyone in the lymphedema community to pull together to support us. If we are to continue to provide the high level of service that our members have come to expect, we need your help. If you are interested in lending a hand, please give us a call. The larger our volunteer base, the stronger we become. Please join us. Kim Gagan is an Assistant Crown Attorney and busy mother of 3 with a family history of primary lymphedema. Kim was a founding LAO member in the mid-1990’s and rejoined as LAO President since 2010. Summer 2013 Lymphedema Matters 7 Sunday, September 29th, 2013 Help us help others...
