I am inviting you to the Philippine Blood
Coordinating Council (PBCC) 32nd
Annual Convention on August 18-20,
2015 at the Crowne Plaza Galleria,
Quezon City, Philippines. Our theme
for this year, “Reducing Risks for
Transfusion Safety” once again places
emphasis and on the safety aspects of
blood banking and transfusion.
While transfusion may be lifesaving and
has become a necessary part of our
patient management, it is not without
risks. Therefore, the appropriate
indications for such has to be
emphasized. With recent development
of quality-performance indicators for
patient blood management by healthcare institutions and accreditation
organizations, there is a pressing call
for greater security on transfusion
practice.
The three-day convention offers various
interesting topics and updates on
voluntary blood donation, blood banking
and clinical transfusion. This is the only
annual convention in the country that
extensively focuses on transfusion.
I hope that you will not let this chance
pass. Please include this event in
your calendar and register as early as
possible. Thank you and see you in the
Convention.
Diosdado Jovian E. Domingo, MD
President, PBCC
I am extending my warmest greetings
to all of you who choose to attend
the PBCC annual convention. Is there
such thing as safe transfusion? Most
literature will state, “weigh the benefits,
versus the risk”. However, there are
means to reduce risks, which may
eventually lead to safe transfusion. This
is the thrust of this year’s convention.
The strategies to improve the quality
of the blood products are what we aim
to emphasize in the scientific sessions
and workshops. Practical day-to-day
issues are covered, along with the
current DOH policies that govern our
practice of Transfusion Medicine. As
much as we would want to update your
knowledge in the current trends, we
also prepared activities that will help
build professional relationship and
even friendship. As you try to imbibe
it all in your minds, we also prepared
sumptuous food as you enjoy the break.
Since 1975 the WHO has resolved to
ensure provision of universal access to
safe, quality and efficacious blood and
blood products for transfusion, their
safe and appropriate use, and also
blood donor and patient safety. Forty
years later, we at the PBCC remain
committed to that pursuit if only for the
well-being of our fellowmen.
Our good blood banking and transfusion
practices translate to meeting our
patients’ needs as well as to reducing
risks for their safety. Make this 32nd
Annual Convention your passport to
attaining that goal. See you!
