For many years now, I have had the honor of welcoming you – on behalf of CoPro –
to sunny Tel-Aviv, and am pleased to do so once more. This will be my third time
heading the DocuShuk section, where I proudly present you with more than 100
wonderful titles.
In this year’s crop we have several artist portraits, celebrating great Jewish and Israeli
musicians, poets and actors – up close and personal. The story of David Perlov, a
pioneer articulator of Israel's distinctive non-fiction cinematic language, is definitely
not to be missed.
We have an international murder investigation, a Norwegian expedition to the
North Pole, the beautiful people of Sri lanka. We also get involved in espionage (a
true Mossad legend) and the heroic search of a man battling cancer, for a cure. In
fact, the universal battle with cancer is a mini-theme.
Another CoPro mainstay is Israelis exploring their Identities from various angles: the
Sabbath; the tradition of watching Arabic Movies on Friday nights; bicycles; hanging
by the river; the difficulties of immigration; the great Israeli export “start ups.”
But Family is still the greatest issue: father-daughter, mother-son, mother-daughter, a
couple who wants to marry, but not before one of them becomes a woman.
The holocaust and the occupation continue to preoccupy Israeli makers, and the
later never cease to find new angles and ways to tell these stories. Of the 100+
films, many films are by known, reputable makers, but lots of bold new directors are
cropping up too.
My deep gratitude to my esteemed colleagues at CoPro, Chaya Zeltzer and the
exceptional Orna Yarmut, CoPro's Founding Director.
Just as making documentaries is a labor of love, so is promoting, marketing and
distributing them.
Enjoy!

The creator Smadar Yaaron, an unearthly creature
who knows no boundaries, has found refuge on
the seam between the Holocaust and the Intifada.
What makes Yaaron unique is inherent in the ways
she chooses to treat and articulate the portrayed
themes of her work and life. For more than 25
years, the artist, Honi HaMa'agel, has obsessively
followed her life, her split identity and her work.
This monumental commemoration project aims
to stabilize the Jewish fear of persecution and the
security-related paranoia of the Jewish people, in
general, and of the State of Israel, in particular.

Hadrian's Curse
‫קללת אדריאנוס‬
A powerful inside look at the group of Jewish settlers
who inhabit the illegal outpost – Havat Gilad. As the
pressures mount from international concerns, as
well as the Israeli government and the more senior
settler establishment, this group becomes more
entrenched – and more committed to their mission.
They believe that they are the connector to the
narrative of Jewish history – and the essential link to
a greater Israel. Religious devotion, and Zionist fervor
propel this group towards violence and extremism.

On November 29, 2012 the Palestinians achieved
a historic victory: the United Nations General
Assembly decided to grant the Palestinian Authority
observer status in the UN. The date was symbolic:
precisely 65 years earlier the General Assembly
had recommended partitioning Palestine-Eretz
Israel into a Jewish and an Arab state, but the Arab
state never materialized. Why did the Palestinians
fail where the Jews – in realizing their national
aspirations in Palestine-Eretz Israel – succeeded?
It is this question for which answers are sought in
Hadrian's Curse.

As the reality for Jews in Europe is shifting, this
film takes a look at the Jews of Paris today. In
conversations with leading thinkers, artists and
ordinary people we get an in-depth look at the
range of Jewish life in France right now. Included
in the film are religious and secular, Zionists and
anti-Zionists who paint a picture of the complexity
in the face of rising anti-Semitism. Among those
interviewed are David Konopnicki, Mark Halter and
Shmuel Trigano.

Two women, an Israeli and a Palestinian, are trying
to build a business partnership. Brought together
by a shared business acumen and knowledge of
the logistics industry, the two combine forces to

The Director sets off on a journalistic journey,
which ends up being a personal one. From the
Declaration of Independence of Israel, to that
of Palestine, between Jewish and Palestinian
underground movements (i.e. Lehi, Hamas);
between hope and despair, Yael meets characters
of the local mosaic. The film passes through the
conflict and becomes unsettling in Hebron, where
the film crew almost gets lynched. "Mirrors" shows
the similarities between people, despite their
different narratives on the rights of this land.

25 years after the death of actress Talia Shapira, her
son begins a journey to recount her life. His starting
point is a search through the vast belongings his
mother left behind – diaries, stories, films, audio
tapes – he peels those memories until arriving at the
most significant moment in their relationship, Talia's
last days. The unorthodox way in which the director
has chosen to describe this process of deciphering
Talia's life, 17 chapters of an observation, which
constitute an abstract and emotional mosaic, this
is an intense investigation into the essence and

On Christmas Eve 2013, some 10,000 asylum
seekers from Eritrea and Sudan gathered at
Levinsky Park. From there they marched in an
orderly fashion to Ha’Aliya Street, and continued
across downtown Tel Aviv, until they reached
Rabin Square, where they gathered around
Yigal Tomarkin’s looming statue, “Holocaust and
Rebirth.” It seemed as if every monument along the
way, the names of every street and building added
meaning to the demonstration, and transformed
these hapless refugees into yet another link in the
chain of Tel Aviv’s history.

Night Will Fall tells the story of the liberation of
the Nazi Concentration camps. Using remarkable
archive footage and testimony from survivors
and liberators, it tells of the efforts made to
document the almost unbelievable scenes that
the allies encountered on Liberation. The film
explores how a team of top filmmakers, including
Sidney Bernstein, Richard Crossman and Alfred
Hitchcock came together to make a film to provide
undeniable evidence of what the allies found. Each
new generation deserves access to this evidence.

This is a poignant untold story of warmth and
compassion after the horrible WW2. Thousands of
Jewish survivors landed in Southern Italy on their
way to Israel, and were warmly welcomed by the
poor locals. In this time of psychological and physical
healing, hundreds of children were born. The film
follows the story of three Israeli women who were
born then, in Santa-Maria-di-Leuca. It weaves rare
historical footage with unique current testimonials
capturing a ray of light after great darkness.

The film focuses on women that are defined as
"the collapsing middle class" and reveals naked,
brave lives. The film's heroines are four 45-50 years
old women that excelled in their fields, believed in
education and hard work – and were still kicked
out of the work force, and into the circle of poverty.
The four women fight to survive financially, but
also to preserve their sense of self. Against all odds,
they fight to overcome the void and re-invent
themselves.

Anywhere else, the process is simple: a band goes
on tour, and sooner or later it comes to a city near
you, you get a ticket and go see them live. Not in

typically a routine business, but in our small country,
far from the international music scene, where inner

get complicated. The clip "Slight Chance of Rock"

So many people still wax nostalgic about that old
Friday night ritual when everyone would watch the
Arabic-language Movie of the Week. But did anybody
ever wonder why Israel’s official TV station, insisted

let us peek out from our “Villa in the Jungle” and

But most of us didn’t really want to see those people,

the woods of Tuscany, the place where, as children,
they hid to escape the Nazis. But more than a
search to find a geographical location, the brothers
are on their way to locate the common ground of
memory, the nexus where the conflicting versions
of their stories can come to rest.

From the theater in his house, Israeli acting teacher
Amir Orian is determined to create change in
times of war. "Mixed Feelings" is a story about
cultural resistance through theater and about
the ungrateful mission of political education. The
film starts in one war and ends 5 years later with
another; the process captured through the relation
between Amir and his students reveals the process
of Israeli society in between the wars.

"Phantom pain" follows the battle of Rahel, the
daughter of Swiss Bishop Patrick Strife, through
a high-risk identical twin pregnancy. At the fourth
month of the pregnancy, Rahel was informed that
one of the fetuses lost pulse and is lying dead
alongside to his living twin brother. Due to the
high risk for physical disability & brain damage for
the surviving fetus, all doctors, without exception,
recommended the termination of Rahel's pregnancy;
In other words – killing the living fetus.

Rabin in His Own Words is an “autobiography”
of sorts, since the story is told entirely in his own
voice. Thus, the film offers a heretofore unseen
perspective on Rabin – his own. The film will relay
the personal and political life of the man and the
myth – as he lived it. Like any good protagonist,
his narrative is well rounded: sacrifice, sacrilege,
heroism, hubris, humor and heartache. Rabin in His
Own Words brings the man – flesh and blood –
back to life, if only momentarily.

forces. Soldiers murder, rape and plunder – in the
name of war. The village of Kufrein is abandoned
in 1948, during the war. Soldiers ransack the
village, taking coins and jewelry. The following day,
the treasures are given out to the children of the
neighboring settlement. Realizing that the treasure
is spoils of war from Kufrein, it is quickly gathered
up again and buried deep in the earth, until peace
returns.

Hannah Arendt, a well-known and most influential
Jewish-German philosopher, caused a great uproar
in the 1960s by coining the subversive concept of
"banality of evil" when referring to the Nazi evil.
Today she evokes renewed interest around the
world, especially among youngsters. This film is a
personal and spiritual Biography of her in her own
voice, so to speak, using rare archives, personal
letters and selected quotes.

True Colors provides a glance into the world of
girls who create makeup video tutorials. It presents
teenagers in the age of the Selfie, the searching
of femininity in its early stages and sheds light on
the power cosmetic companies have in forming
these girls’ world. The film raises questions about
the definition of knowledge, work, community and
success, and is part of a constantly evolving portrait
of a generation, that never stops documenting itself
and the powers surrounding it.
