Tisha Bruemmer, Editor, Alumni Advancement Coordinator Mary Jo Kathman, Dean of Student/Alumni Services Donna Karda, Alumni Relations Coordinator Clare Allaire, Student/Alumni Secretary Outside The College Doors When Assistant Professor Jim Sargent is teaching his Ethics courses, he may add some interest by spinning a tale or two. But when he isn’t at the college, he’s still spinning – as a hand-weaver with his wife Shelly. They house large looms in their basement along with yarns, bobbin winders and other weaving accessories. They have recently begun selling their pieces at local craft fairs. How did you get involved in weaving? One of my sisters gave us her loom in 2007. Shelly has always been interested in fabrics, textiles, and weaving. We took three lessons through the Cincinnati Weavers’ Guild. When we got back to our home after the first lesson we began experimenting with what we’d learned and have never looked back. Why do you weave? Weaving is more than warp and weft, bobbins and yarn; it is our souls’ expression. We have discovered a spiritual dimension to weaving. There is something inexpressibly wonderful about creating a project from cones of yarn, through the process of dressing the loom, and then seeing a pattern and project emerge with each stroke of the beater bar. We are both good weavers and work very hard at creating as technically and aesthetically perfect projects as possible. 1 The BlueStreak GSCollege.edu February 2013 And, you’ve got a name for your business… We call ourselves “The Common Thread,” since both of us weave and we wanted our business/business name to reflect our cooperative efforts. We are very much in this together. No one can tell which piece has been woven by whom. That, in our estimation, is good news. Quite honestly we have been very pleased that projects we have each woven have sold well at festivals and sales. What types of items do you make? We weave scarves, shawls, prayer-shawls, baby blankets, lap throws, table linens (runners, napkins, place mats), towels, rag rugs, shoulder bags, coasters and bookmarks. Shelly also creates stuffed animals from our hand-woven fabrics. Shelly envisions most of the new projects, adapts patterns, and thinks up new ways to create through weaving. Where do you want to take this hobby in the future? Initially, we were very satisfied with being able to create a project on our first loom. Then we began to dream about creating projects of such quality and excellence as to be able to market our work. Our sales have increased and we have custom order projects. The object of our work, however, remains much the same as when we began. We are grateful for the talent and skill, for the opportunity to create something lovely and beautiful, and to have people appreciate what we do. The BlueStreak GSCollege.edu February 2013 2 in S troke, dehydration, broken bones, heat stroke, allergic reactions, intoxication, heart attack, overdoses…… they may sound like typical cases nurses encounter in an Emergency Room. But, let’s add “foul ball in the face” and you can probably guess we’re really talking about medical events at a baseball game, specifically Cincinnati Reds games at the Great American Ballpark. Daryl Asbrock ’97 has encountered these types of emergencies many times while working as part of the TriHealth Medical Events team that takes care of fans, players and staffers at all Cincinnati Reds home games. Asbrock, a GSH Emergency Room nurse, has been on the Medical Events team for several years. The Medical Events Team consists of TriHealth nurses and doctors, and critical care paramedics from firehouses around the tristate. The 50+ members work on the team part time in addition to their regular jobs. Another alumni Theresa Dillon ‘93 also occasionally works on the team. Daryl was one of the original Medical Team members. He worked with program manager Doug Harris in the ER and as Harris was forming the team, he asked Asbrock to volunteer at Reds games in the opposing team’s dugout. Since Asbrock is a big Reds fan, he said the opportunity to hobnob with professional ball players was a “no-brainer”. After a few games, his volunteer work became a paid position. “Working at the Reds games does have its perks,” Daryl noted, “I get to be up close and personal with a lot of professional ball players and sometimes we score tickets to Reds games. But, when you’re working a game, it’s serious business.” The Medical Team provides all types of services to fans through First Aid rooms and mobile emergency units. On hot days, heat-related problems can be numerous. But, the team never knows what type of medical issue may surface during their watch. Daryl has treated people having heart attacks, has air splinted broken bones, has helped carry sick people down the steps from the upper deck, has bandaged all types of cuts and bruises for fans and ball players. Requests for the Medical Team have grown since its inception 12 years ago and the events come in all types and sizes. The team is now present at several other venues/events around the Cincinnati area. To name a The Medical team covers events in all types and sizes—from professional or college games to chili-eating festivals and fencing tournaments. 3 The BlueStreak GSCollege.edu February 2013 how to treat it. It’s almost scary. But, with my training I received first at GSHSN and then in the TriHealth ER, I’m confident in what I’m doing,” Daryl said. That confidence came into play recently when an elderly lady at Duke Convention Center fainted. After examining her, Daryl determined she was having a stroke and insisted over the objections of few: Xavier University and College of Mount St. her friends that they call 911 and send her to the Joseph athletic events, Marvin Lewis Walkathon, hospital. Eight of the ten students are GSC/GSHSN alumni from graduation years 1988-2012. The students are employed at several local hospitals including: GSH, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, Mercy Health Partners, and University Hospital/ UC Health. 5 The BlueStreak GSCollege.edu BSN program Department Chair Teresa Getha-Eby ’78, teaches some of the courses. “The students are very engaged in the learning process,” she said. “They’re integrating the knowledge they’ve gained from their work experience with theory from their BSN coursework.” BSN student Meg Brueggemeyer Schroeder ’88, said she already has discovered that she is incorporating what she is learning in the BSN program to February 2013 her time at work. The BSN classes primarily are on Thursdays, and some coursework is offered online. The Higher Learning Commission evaluated the program for accreditation in early November, and the College has also applied for accreditation from the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission. around campus SERVICE, OFFICERS, HONORS Touching Communities One Project at a Time Fall Semester 2012 Honors Students recognized for achieving GPA of 3.25 or above for the semester T his fall, many students spent a day at Western Hills High School performing hearing, dental and BMI screenings. They were helping the Cincinnati Health Department in this once-per-year mandatory health screening for elementary and high school students in Cincinnati Public Schools. The college plans to participate in the screenings again next fall. One of their tasks was flattening coffee filters (intended to be used for toilet paper in a third world country). The organization estimates that each hour of volunteer time helps up to 100 people. E ach week at St. John United Church of Christ Community Kitchen, up to five GSC students check blood pressures, provide basic health teaching, provide foot care and help serve meals as part of the church’s community outreach. Though students are only required to sign up for one two -hour experience, many return as volunteers. GSC has been participating in that program since January, 2012 when it was developed by Paulette Palmentera Demarkowski ‘68. Student O Officers for 2012-2013 I n December, GSC staff, faculty and students donated items for Hurricane Sandy victims. The GSC Student Organization organized the drive and transported two carloads of blankets, drinks, cleaning supplies and personal hygiene products to Matthew 25 Ministries (http://www.m25m.org), a humanitarian aid organization. Afterwards, several students and one staff member volunteered at the facility. Moore C O L L E G E More Than $134,000 in Scholarships Awarded for the 2012-2013 Academic Year One Nomination: Seventeen Student Scholarships With the help of Alumni Jeanne Jefferies Carilli ‘95, GSC was one of only five colleges across the US to receive an inaugural $20,000 Case Manager Scholarship Award from GENEX Services, Inc. When Jeanne, who is a Case Manager for the company, first saw the announcement about the new scholarship program last winter, she quickly submitted a nomination for her alma mater. GENEX announced GSC as a recipient college in June. Seventeen GSC students have benefitted from Jeanne’s efforts and received GENEX scholarships for the 2012-13 academic year. In her nomination letter, Jeanne said GSC should be considered for the award because, of its strong focus on clinical skills. “The early exposure to being a nurse, acting like a nurse, feeling like a nurse and everything that goes along with that was critical to my future success as a case manager.” She said. “This college also focuses on core values and respect to those of all races, genders and religions.” GENEX provides management services to the workers’ compensation, disability, and auto markets. Its 1500 case managers work with physicians to coordinate patient care. Thanks to Jeanne. The BlueStreak GSCollege.edu February 2013 12 C L A S S N O T E S Susan Brodwolf Hanselman ‘81, Alumni Association President Fellow Alumni, Have you made your resolutions for 2013? With the beginning of the new year, it’s a great time to think how you can give back to the school/college that has helped you become the nurse you are today. As an alumni and an experienced nurse you possess a wealth of information that could be shared with our GSC students. The college would like to tap into that knowledge. As president of the your alumni, I can tell you first hand that how great it feels to be a part of GSC again. I encourage you to think about becoming a resource to GSC students. There are many ways you could make a difference by volunteering just a few hours of your time this year. The college is considering several events and programming where alumni could share their experiences and knowledge with our students as they look at nursing career opportunities. As part of that planning, the Alumni office would love to hear from you! If you would like to find out more about mentoring and how your experiences could help GSC students as they look at career opportunities, please contact the Alumni Office at [email protected] or 513-8622389. She’ll take your name and contact you with more information as we move forward. The college also would love to know if you have an update for the BlueStreak’s Class Notes. You can submit your news through the online form on the GSC website, or send them to the Alumni Office. We love to hear what our alumni are doing, so please submit an update soon. The Annual Fund Campaign 2013 is underway and your contributions make a BIG difference for the students. Most of our students work while attending the college and scholarships help them reduce their work load so they can concentrate on their education. Please consider making a donation, every dollar really does help. Clorinda Malloni Caproni, Class of October 1948, passed away in September.
