El Camino Academy Bogotá, Colombia Issue #35 - 13 / November 13, 2015 Weekly Bulletin [email protected] Model United Nations Hannah Anderson is the new 3rd grade teacher. She grew up in the Portland, Oregon area and spent the last 4 years studying elementary education at Wheaton College in Illinois. Through Wheaton she was able to make several connections that God used to lead her to ECA, including meeting Annie Johnson her freshman year, who told her about her awesome experience at ECA. Her parents even met Jake Carlson’s aunt at a wedding in Canada! This is her first year in Colombia, and what she likes most are the people and the delicious food. She loves how people have welcomed her and made her feel at home. She likes that food is a unique and cultural key to Colombia, especially ajiaco. by Sofia Alvira and Valentina Santiago, 11th Praise & Prayer Upcoming Events All-School News Elementary Secondary Fundraising Sports Cover Prev. Thanksgiving November Parent Workshop Worship at UCB Principles and Norms of Friendship and Dating On Sat, Nov 28, the ECA High School worship team will be hosting an evening of worship at the United Church of Bogota. This has been a meaningful event in the past, and we encourage anyone who will be in town to join us for this evening of worshiping the Lord together. The service begins at 6:00p and goes until about 8:00. There will also be a T4:8 bake sale at the event, where you can buy coffee and snacks. We hope to see you there! Parents, have you set aside 7:45a - 9:15 on Tue or Wed, Nov 24 or 25 to attend the parent workshop? Juan Carlos Castellanos, Community Care Director, will be giving tips on how to identify a friendship or courtship that is harmful for your child. Cena Galardones Parent Prayer Meetings in November The annual OBED Cena Galardones is on Sun, Nov 22. This is a special dinner to honor teachers, students and staff from various schools who are recognized as the Teacher/Student/Staff of the Year for their individual schools. This week we are choosing a 12th grade student, a teacher, and a staff member to represent ECA at this dinner. The selected individuals will be announced in next week’s bulletin. Working together we can stop the spread of infection. ECA is implementing the Measures of Academic Progress® (MAP®) test, an online adaptive standardized test that provides immediate feedback on student progress and growth, as well as strengths and weaknesses. Parents of 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 7th, and 9th grade students, please make sure your children are here at ECA on time the week of Nov 17 - 20 for the MAP® testing. If you know of any homeschool families with children in those grades who might be interested in taking advantage of this opportunity, tell them to contact the ECA office. Pre-K Applications for 2016-17 ECA Families and staff who have children eligible for Pre-Kinder in August are invited to send an email to [email protected] if they are interested in enrolling next year. Saving Natural Resources It’s time to commit to saving water and electricity in our homes and at school. Parents, take time to discuss this topic with your family. Next week the Environmental Committee and our Operations staff will start a campaign to reduce overall consumption of electricity at ECA. We count on your support! Review these three verses, reading them three times a day for the next 3 days. 1 John 4 (NIV) 1 Juan 4 (NVI) This is love: not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. 10 Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12 Happy Thanksgiving November 13, 2015 Issue #35 - 13 ECA Weekly Bulletin [email protected] 7 Cover Prev. Students learned that Gideon was used by God, not through his own strength but through God’s perfect protection. After testing God by putting out a fleece, he obeyed God to fight his enemies with a small army without using any weapons! Zach Dalton, one of our counselors, taught us how to identify a person’s feelings by looking at their body signals (faces.) Knowing our own feelings is so important because our emotions affect our thinking. When we are in the emotional red zone, we may be grumpy or upset, angry and out of control. When we are in the yellow zone, we may be excited or surprised, nervous or silly. When we are in the blue zone, we may feel sad or hurt, disappointed or depressed. How we feel can strongly affect how we think or respond to others. Be aware of the zone you are in! November 13, 2015 Issue #35 - 13 ECA Weekly Bulletin [email protected] 9 Cover ELEMENTARY Prev. Page Dear Parents, I want to address a question that several students have asked me this quarter: Should I attend a summer course at a school in the U.S.? Guidance Counselor Corner This is a great question. There are many programs available every summer at schools from coast to coast. As we have looked at programs, I have been asking students: Why does this course interest you? The lure of going to the U.S. and participating in a class that sounds fun is very strong. But, this may not be enough reason to invest time and money. It is worth looking at how this course will benefit your teen 2-5 years from now. Will this be a course that will refine their current strength? Will this be a precursor to what your teen wants to study in college? Next Page Is the cost of the course more or less than the value this course will provide? The cost of the course varies in importance depending on your personal finances. But, the cost of these courses will always be significant. The trip will incur many costs that are not included on the glossy brochure. These include logistics to and from the school, spending money during the teen’s down time, and any unforeseen emergencies. This doesn’t include nonfinancial costs, such as time invested in the course, being separated from family, and possibly being alone in a completely new environment. Once you work through these questions and are certain this course will be a blessing not only to your teen but to your family, then you can proceed to the next steps. These are expansive experiences for young people, and will be memorable. If you would like more information on available courses, here is a link: http://www.fastweb.com/collegesearch/articles/summer-programs-for-highschool-students Jaime M.
