Candidates for the
Candidate for President
Candidate for Treasurer
Nicolas Liakas
Carol Mathieu
I have been a member of the Santa Barbara Region since August,
1994 and have served the club in several capacities during those
years. I have been the editor of Der Auspuff, participated within the
Activities Committee, and represented our region at this year’s Parade
Portland at various functions. I have come to know the strengths and
weaknesses of our club and the needs and interests of our members.
I believe that as President I can provide professional leadership in a
congenial and collegiate manner and atmosphere with the goal of
further enhancing the benefits of membership in the Santa Barbara
Region.
I have been a member of the Santa Barbara Region club since February
2003. I got involved in the club immediately and have always been
willing to help, but until now, could never participate on the board
due to my commute to and from Los Angeles every day. Now that I am
working and living in Ventura I would like to step up to the plate and
participate on the Board of Directors as the Treasurer for 2007. I have
more than 35 years in the business world as am currently the Senior
Vice President of Human Resources for Affinity Bank in Ventura. I have
served as a member of the activities committee for 2005 and 2006 and
have been a proof reader for the Der Auspuff for the past two years.
My enthusiasm is contagious and I will bring a vibrancy to the board
should I be lucky enough to be elected into this position of Treasurer.
Candidate for Vice President
Gary Gasperino
I have been actively involved with our Club since 2000. I have held
numerous Board and appointed positions over the years. As your VP,
I helped follow through with my commitment to maintain the Club’s
goals and those of PCA and help foster a “Family” atmosphere. I believe
our strengths lie with encouraging member participation/involvement
in activities and events sponsored by our Club, Region, Zone and PCA
National. My continued involvement will help in this transition year as
many new Board and appointed members will be leaving.
Candidate for Secretary
Karen Turek
This year has been a good year and I have enjoyed being secretary
of our club. As our club’s secretary, it has been great experiencing
what takes place “behind the scenes” and to report it to our general
membership. If you will accept me, I would like your vote for SBR’s
secretary for 2007.
Candidate for Activities
Barry and Valerie Weinstein (Co-Chairs)
Valerie and I have had the distinct pleasure of serving our club as
the Activities Co-Chairs for the past 12 months. Together, with the
members of Activities Committee, we have planned and organized the
majority of tours, drives and events in which a large percentage of our
PCA/SBR club members have participated. It’s been a busy, exciting
and rewarding year for us. We are delighted with the wonderful new
friendships we have made and are happy to ask for your vote so we
may continue in this role as Activities Co-Chairs in the coming year.
We think that we have had a terrific 2006, in terms of the quantity and
quality of the events presented, and intend to continue organizing as
many, or even more events, in 2007.

President’s Column
Gerade Aus!
By Joe Carastro
Feeling a bit like Karnak holding the last envelope, (if you are under
40, have a Greybeard explain this) this will be my last foray on the early
pages of “der Auspuff ”. My overwhelming thought for the last couple
years is how much of a pleasure it has been to work with the other Board
members and the various volunteers that have made SBR what it is. Not
to say that there are not new avenues to explore, but the membership
has maintained a high level of enthusiasm and it has always been very
gratifying to witness the sea of smiling faces at events.
As some of you know, I am just back from 10 days in Europe and
am happy to report that Nancy and I had a delightful time attending
the RUF Rallye in Catalyuna, Spain. SBR members, Alois and Estonia Ruf,
once again put on a superbly organized event that was attended by
forty cars filled with enthusiasts from around the world. Not being able
to resist giving the dead horse a few more whacks, I was again struck
on how pleasant the driving experience was at higher speeds and
traffic densities due to the generally higher skill level and predictable
behavior of the European driver. I also witnessed Nancy’s cousin’s son
reviewing the 2000 questions presented in computer graphics format
in preparation for taking his French driver’s license exam and suspect
there may be a connection.
On the industry front, the introduction of the Panamera is drawing
closer, so expect the usual flurry of spy photos. In addition, in an everproliferating model selection, Porsche appears to be somewhat definite
on producing a successor to the 928 using the Panamera platform.
Things are booming at both our local dealers and if you have not been
in for a visit in a while, drop on by.
Wishing all of you a happy and healthy Holiday Season, I remain,

Editor’s Column
A heavy issue… with P.M.S.
Words by Michael C. Harley
It is hard to believe I have been sitting here for one year. You may
remember the January 2006 issue, when I mentioned that the Editor’s
seat vacated by Nicolas Liakas was “toasty warm.” Well, I finally figured
out why. In the past twelve months, I don’t think my derrière ever left
the cushion! The Editor position of Der Auspuff is interesting, exciting,
rewarding, and engrossing.
This Nov/Dec issue is overweight – with content, that is. You would
be hard pressed to find another Der Auspuff containing nine member
events, two board meetings, and two great member contributions. The
member contributions are what really add personality to the club and
publication, so it is a pleasure to present them in this issue. You will find
Rick Llewellyn’s “Porsche Driving Experience” article on page 18, and
Brad Hunt’s “Hemmings Article” story on page 29.
Check out our event coverage of the Rebel Run on page 14, the
German Autofest on page 20, and our two R.U.F. Reports, found on page
24 and 25. The all-new P.M.S. group (you will have to read it to find out
what it stands for) coverage is on page 15.

September Camarillo Breakfast Meeting
Enjoying our Porsches over Labor Day weekend
Words by Barry and Valerie Weinstein
Photos by Max Sluiter
September 2, 2006 - It was a gorgeous
first day of the Labor Day Weekend. The skies
were clear, the sun was shining, and the
temperature was in the mid 70’s for most of
the breakfast. Even though this was a 3-day
holiday weekend, we still managed to attract
123 people in 65 Porsches for our September
Camarillo breakfast meeting.
We’d like to welcome Anita Banke, who
with her husband Larry, have been members
of our club since 1967. This was the first time in
15 years that Anita brought her extremely rare
1959 Porsche Convertible D in Togo Brown
to the meeting. Although it hasn’t been that
long since we’ve seen Anita, it had been more
than a decade (too long) since we’ve seen her
Porsche.
Another interesting story was told to the
group at this meeting. Frank Ladwig and
Michael Brovsky each noticed something
familiar about the other at the breakfast.
After greeting each other, they recognized
that they had been high school classmates!
Anita Banke and her original Convertable D
Both owned Porsches then, and coincidentally
reconnected for the first time in 50 years at our
breakfast event.
New members of SBR/PCA (all Porsche
Boxster owners) included Joel Freeman from
West Hills in his 2003 Porsche Boxster, Brad
Sitten from Silver Strand Beach in his 2004
Porsche Boxster, and Eleanor Allen, from
Malibu, in her 2006 Porsche Boxster. Eleanor is
currently a member of the Los Angeles Region,
but decided she wanted dual membership as
the large list of breakfasts, events, activities,
and tours our club hosts was too much for her

to pass up. Welcome to all of you!
Paul Wittlock of Simi Valley, a prospective
member, came to look us over in his ’06
Cayman S. Hope you liked what you saw, Paul,
and we hope you will become a full fledged
member by the next meeting.
There is a lot happening this month and the
business part of the breakfast was taken up
by discussing September’s upcoming events.
Check the Calendar and Bulletin Board on

Hope to see you at the next event!
September Santa Barbara Breakfast Meeting
The German Autofest borrows our crowd!
Words by Barry Weinstein
Photos by Nick Richards
September 9. 2006 - It was a beautiful day
in Santa Barbara. We arrived at the Harbor
Restaurant about 8:30 in the morning. The
sky was clear and the temperature in the midseventies.
Only one thing was missing…the usual
crowd of members and guests attending our
monthly Santa Barbara Breakfast meeting.
Only about 20 people in 12 cars showed up.
This was actually the smallest attendance I’ve
witnessed since joining our club.
Where was everybody? Well, they were all
at the Ventura German Autofest – one of the
largest Porsche events in the West. In fact,
about a third of us attending the breakfast
were scheduled to work at the Autofest later
that day or the following Sunday.
Mike Turek took over the membership
duties, handed out the sign-up sheets and
got up and welcomed two new members
and guests to our breakfast. (Dave Stone, who
generally takes care of this chore, was at the
show in Ventura supervising the volunteers
who were working there).
This was Charlene Kalk’s first Santa Barbara
Breakfast. She drove up from Westlake
Village, in her Porsche Cayenne Turbo. Tobias
Hildebrand, from Santa Barbara, picked up one
of our Der Auspuff ’s at Santa Barbara Porsche,
read about all the events and activities that
SBR/PCA has, including our breakfast club
meetings, and told us that with that much
happening he had to attend a breakfast and
find out more. I hope we see you as a full
fledged member in the near future, Tobias
I spoke about our upcoming events
and noted that we are still searching for
volunteers to host the various courses of our
2007 Progressive Dinner as well as someone
to host the annual Chili Cook-off. Anyone
interested, please contact Val or myself for
more information.
With that, we ended the meeting, a little
earlier than usual, so those of us who were
working the 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM shift at the
Ventura Show could get there in plenty of
time.

October Camarillo Breakfast Meeting
Mother Nature provides us with another flawless day!
Words by Barry and Valerie Weinstein
Photos by Max Sluiter
October 7, 2006 - It started out kind of
overcast, but by 9:00 AM, the weather was
as close to perfect as one could hope. The
temperature was in the low 70’s, the skies
were clear. Attendance began slowly, but by
the time the meeting was in full force we had
68 Porsches and 131 people at the Way Point
Café hosted at the Camarillo airport.
We had a number of new members and
guests join us. Blair and Avery Taylor, new
members from Thousand Oaks, arrived in their
2006 Porsche Cayman. Glad to have you with
us. We hope to see you at future breakfasts
and events.
Hassan and Rita Rashid, from Westlake
Village, have been members for six years, but
this was the very first Camarillo breakfast they
have attended. They drove their 2004 Porsche
GT3 to the meeting. The Rashids accompanied
us on the “Rebel Without A Cause Run” to
Paso Robles last week, came to breakfast this
morning and will join us on our next event, the
“Hot Run To A Cold War Site,” to the old Nike
missile base in the Malibu Mountains. We’re
delighted to get to know you folks as you
become more active with our club.
Also, another new member to join us for
breakfast was Chuck Tulloh in his 1988 Porsche
911 Cabriolet. Welcome Chuck!
Regarding guests of our breakfast club
meeting, Larry Smith from Ventura, a friend
of our Autocross Chair, Rick Shaw, visited with
us.
Jan and Jerry Stevens, from Prescott,
Arizona, also broke bread with us. The Stevens
used to be PCA/SBR members.
Finally prospective member, Collin
Kruschke, from Camarillo, arrived in his 1969
Porsche 912. We hope to see you join the club
soon, Collin.
Breakfast meetings are held the first two
Saturdays of each month. Check the calendar
on page 6 for specifics.

October Santa Barbara Breakfast Meeting
Cloudy skies everywhere except over the pier!
Words by Karen Turek
October 14, 2006 - Most Porsche members
that attended today left home under cloudy
skies with predictions of scattered showers. We
were all surprised and pleased to be greeted by
sunshine and blue skies at the Santa Barbara
pier. Because my husband Mike had another
commitment this morning, I drove solo up to
Santa Barbara. Before I left, Mike reminded
me that the rear fenders on our Porsche were
wider than the front… and to be careful. He
also requested that I not park the Porsche at
any shopping venue, etc. (What is a wife to
do?) Ha! Attending today’s breakfast were 32
people driving 17 Porsches and 5 alternate
vehicles. New to our region is Scott Haskins,
driving a 1983 Porsche 911 SC. First time at
the Santa Barbara breakfast were Dave Miller
and Christienny Georgiades. Jerry Maloeos,
also a new member and first timer at the Santa
Barbara breakfast, drove his brand new 2007
Porsche 997 S coupe in black - sold to him
by our own Walt Brancome. Jerry has been
a Porsche owner since 1969, and currently
also owns a 1980 Porsche 911 SC with over
280,000 miles on the odometer. Joe Carastro
talked about their trip to Barcelona. Joe and
his wife Nancy attended a Ruf rally with 35
other couples in Barcelona, Spain. They also
were able to attend a one-day driver training
at a Formula 1 track. Barry Weinstein reported
that we have 75 people signed up for the Hot
Run to a Cold War Site. Our annual Christmas
party is 30% filled, so get your RSVP in early.
It was a pleasure to see new and perspective
members being greeted by tenured members
sharing conversation, good weather and a
mutual love of fine cars. I will see you on our
next fun-filled event.

Rebel Run
SBR Pays Homage to James Dean
Photos and Words by Nicolas Liakas
September 30, 2006 marked the 51st
anniversary of the fatal day when Hollywood
lost its“rebel without a cause.”To commemorate
the event, 76 Santa Barbara Region members
traveling in 40 Porsches journeyed to the site
where James Dean lost his life while he was
driving his “Little Bastard.” (The present day
location is marked by relatively small highway
signs at the junction of California Highways 46
and 41 about 30 miles northeast of Paso Robles.
A couple of miles to the west is a memorabilia
store. The tragic event had an unintended
result as it catapulted the Porsche marque
into international headlines and turned into a
marketing MBA textbook example for decades
to come; the stuff of which legends are made.
The group departed from downtown Santa
Barbara and immediately navigated some
of the most beautiful roads on California’s
Central Coast. The parade proceeded through
Los Olivos and embarked upon Foxen Canyon,
passing internationally acclaimed wineries.
As it entered San Luis Obispo County,
cruising on Highway 41 between the town
of Atascadero and the Cholame Valley, the
drivers had to negotiate turn after turn while
being challenged by numerous hill climbs
and blind curves. As far as one could see,
vineyards blanketed the landscape while
palaces glamorous and gargantuan rivaled
the chateaus of France.
After paying its respects at the crash site,
the motorcade proceeded to the Eberle
Winery for a catered lunch. Situated on top
of a hill overlooking acres upon acres of vines
meticulously arranged in straight rows, this
winery hosted our members to a feast that
included salads, sandwiches, various desserts
and samples of its many fine white, rose and
red wines.
It was time to visit downtown San Luis
Obispo, but first the participants registered
at a local hotel for the night. After a brief rest,
the region’s members toured the shops until
nightfall and dined at local restaurants. It
was a great way to end a fabulous excursion.
Our thanks were extended to Kent Bodin,
and Luz and Dave (“Mapquest”) Mosesson
for producing a memorable and challenging
driving experience.

P.M.S. GROUP
I thought that would get your attention
Words by Karen Turek
A group of ladies got to talking and thought that we females could get together and have
some fun (without any engine talk). Eleven of us got together and rented an electric boat in
Channel Islands Harbor for two hours. We set about to discuss the possibility of having future
women’s gatherings – something we women would enjoy. We enjoyed wine, appetizers, lots of
laughs and male entertainment (compliments of Nick Liakas).
This was an impromptu get-together. Our next fun outing (not an official Porsche Club event)
will be a scavenger hunt at the Thousand Oaks Mall, open to any female in the Porsche club with
a credit card, cash, etc. (or access to one). You will receive details soon regarding this event. If you
have any ideas, comments, etc., please feel free to contact me at [email protected].

The Porsche Driving Experience
Photos and Words by Rick Llewellyn
“One of the biggest thrills of my lifetime,” so said the Porsche
corporate executive when I asked him what he thought of the
Porsche Driving Experience. I thought to myself that maybe he was
selling the program a bit, or maybe he was just an enthusiastic guy;
but I decided to see for myself.
18 NOVEMBER//DECEMBER 2006 PORSCHE CLUB OF AMERICA SANTA BARBARA REGION
Located just a few miles outside of
Birmingham, Alabama is the Barber
Motorsports Park; home to a 2.38-mile race
track with 16 challenging turns.
Day one begins with the classroom. There
were twenty-three others in my class, some
with racing experience. As the instruction
begins, there is important terminology to
learn, terms not used in everyday driving, for
examples: “weight transfer,” “friction circle,”
“oversteer,” and “late apex.” As the class
concludes, we are issued crash helmets.
My group is the first to the motorcross
course. There we find a large course of red
cones set in a figure-8 pattern, but with a couple
of minor “S” turns in two of the straight-aways
just to make the course more challenging. I am
first up. I mimic the instructor’s start by flooring
the accelerator out of the starting blocks, but I
am at the first turn in less than 6 seconds. I hit
the brakes hard, as we had been taught, and
head into a sharp “U” turn. Thirty-four seconds
for my first lap, not bad - but it is a long way
from a record.
Our group heads next to the skid pad. The
course is simple; two small circles of cones, the
circles about 125 feet apart, are set up for us
to drive a figure 8 around them. The Porsche
Stability Management system has been turned
off. I am around the first turn no problem, but
I do notice the course is much like driving
on black ice. My instructor now tells me to
accelerate, more then still more. As I come out
of the turn, the car spins to the right. I turn into
the skid and hit the brakes hard, the car spins
uncontrollably to the left turning a full 360
degrees and stops.
Finally, it is our turn to get on the track.
We tour a couple of times in the van with our
instructor learning the entry, apex and entry
points of the turns; noting well the brake signs.
Turn 2 takes you around and down, leaving you
to accelerate up a hill blindly. There is the tight
hairpin, then the double “museum” turn that
falls away from you as you head into it. Turn
13 again takes you into a valley before sending
you uphill blindly into Turn 14 only to fall off
again into another valley and uphill into Turn
15. Out of Turn 16 is the longest straightaway
passing the start-finish line on the way back to
Turn 1.
We follow our instructor out onto the track.
We follow his path on the course trying to
brake where he brakes and accelerate where
he accelerates. He requires us to hit our marks
in order to follow the proper line on the
course, warning that we cannot pick up speed
until we have the line down and grooved
into our driving pattern. There is much to
remember, hit your marks, brake on time,
keep your eyes looking where you need to go,
maintain mental focus From the straightaway
we brake hard before the turns and in some
cases “trail” brake application into the turns,
then ease back into the accelerator and attain
full throttle out of the turn exit points.
Day two begins with a review back in
the classroom. The terminology that was
peculiar before now has real meaning. Today
downshifting will be introduced into the
equation along with “heel and toe” pedal
control.
Back on the track, the rest of the afternoon
was devoted to perfecting what we learned
yesterday. A few laps to renew our new skills
and then instruction on where and when to
properly downshift. Next, it is taking turns
riding with the instructor to pick up some
fine points on driving the course, including
the new challenge of downshifting and
upshifting at appropriate times. Day two is
definitely more fun; you can sense the growth
of your skills. The trepidation of heading into
a turn at 90 miles-per-hour is transformed
into a thrill by the perfection of yesterday’s
lessons. Instructors continually remind of the
importance of staying focused as we spend
these final hours on the track. There is no
slacking on the track, and most find occasional
breaks are necessary and beneficial.
The final track time is spent on “hot laps.”
These are laps driven by the instructors with
the participants as passengers.
Looking back, I guess I should have known
that the Porsche corporate executive knew
what he was talking about when he told me
that the Porsche Driving Experience was the
thrill of a lifetime.

Goodie Store Report
November/December 2006
By Mike and Pamuela Hodson
Goodie
Store
PCA Sweatshirt
What! November already?
Does that mean the
fabulous/dreaded holidays
are coming, along with the
fabulous/dreaded relatives?
We all know how difficult
those Porsche people are to buy
for; usually they buy everything
for themselves - at least that’s what
I do. What better time to enlist the help
of the “Goodie Store Elves” to select that
unique item that will make the perfect gift.
Special orders take the ordinary into
extraordinary, and a bit of PCA/SBR embroidery
onto a nice but common garment makes the
transformation complete. We are really good
at ideas, keeping secrets, and delivering on
time, We may not have eight tiny reindeer, or
even eight cylinders, but our noses are rosy,
our cheeks are ruddy, and we are ready, willing,
and able to make your favorite Porsche-philes
dreams come true!
On a completely different note, I have had the
pleasure of recently spending time with fellow
PCA/SBR members on two wheeled outings.
No, I am not talking about motorcycling, I’m
talking about, as my Australian buddy says,
“push bikes”. That is right, bicycles, both road
and mountain.
Much to my surprise, there is a large
contingent of our members that like to
recreate/stay-in-shape/navigate via the most
efficient form of transportation ever devised
- the bicycle.
Love your Cab but hate to shiver?
Tired of that old grungy sweatshirt
you’ve had since Nixon was in office?
We can solve your problem with a
stylin’, warm, practical sweatshirt.
Made by Champion, so you know
the quality is there, we offer grey or
black, with the PCA National Logo
embroidered on the front. Available in
all sizes for $40.00, come by our booth
at the next event for a “test drive.”
Price $40.00 each
PCA National Window Stickers
Anyone that knows me will attest to my
love for pedaling. For many years it has been
my stress/sanity management program,
although sometimes I wonder if the program
is working!
My thought is to combine the passion for
two wheels and four, with a suitably tasteful
yet mildly wicked PCA/SBR cycling jersey.
Yes, yes, I know that for many lycra and
manhood are mutually exclusive.
I say function deserves it’s due,
thank you very much.
Please contact me if you
are interested in a PCA/SBR
cycling jersey. My thoughts
are to gather a number of
orders, make a run of jerseys,
and then show up in masse at
a breakfast. Does that sound
like fun or what?
The search continues for a 2007 Goodie
Store Manager. It is my hope that we can find
a couple of interested people to help, so that
the load will be light.
We look forward to seeing you at an
upcoming event.
Offered in “innie” and “outie” styles.
The “innies” look great and don’t
get rubbed off by that obsessive
compulsive polishing and cleaning
many of us practice. “Outies” look
best on those vehicles with tinted
windows, where an “innie” might be
difficult to see. At just two bucks, you
can experiment with both styles and
decide which works best for you.
Price $2.00 each
How to Buy
All items in the Goodie Store are
available at both Breakfast Club
events (Camarillo and Santa Barbara)
and at most special events.

Dave Stone Retires from Ventura D.A. Office
Words by B. Lind Turner
A special man was honored by an august
group of heroes on October 20, 2006, at the
Pierpont Hotel in Ventura. SBR member Dave
Stone officially retired from his position as
Deputy Chief Investigator in the Ventura
County District Attorney’s Office after 36 years
of dedicated service in law enforcement.
More than 140 guests attended the gala
celebration of a career that included service
in the Ventura County Sheriff ’s Department,
Ventura City Police Department, and since
1985 in the District Attorney’s office. The
celebrants included representatives from each
of those agencies. There were in attendance
six Superior Court Judges; Michael D.
Bradbury, former District Attorney; the current
D.A., Gregory D. Totten; and a host of law
enforcement officials who served the citizenry
in the past. Tributes, citations and awards
came pouring in from elected county officials,
state legislators, California’s governor Arnold
Schwarzenegger and President George H. W.
Bush. The latter’s letter commending Dave was
read to the assembly.
The evening’s proceedings included a
video presentation reflecting on Dave’s life
in law enforcement as well as his personal
and family recollections. The emotional and
moving collection of photographs spanning
almost four decades gripped the audience
and left hardly a dry eye in the room. After
several speeches by dignitaries, Dave spoke
to his friends, colleagues and relatives.
His presentation expressed his sincere
appreciation of everyone who touched his life.
He offered special words of encouragement
and comfort to those who succeed him and
to those who continue their service to the
community. The room was first silent, then
broke into spontaneous applause, when Dave
addressed Susan, the love of his life, for the
affection and support she has provided over
the years.
Twenty-four members of the Santa Barbara
Region were honored to have been included
in the evening’s festivities. All members of
our region are proud and privileged to be
associated with an honest-to-goodness hero.
Our respect and admiration are offered to
Dave, and we hope that he enjoys retirement
to the fullest.
Engagement Announcement
We take great pleasure and joy
in informing our members of the
betrothal of Jennifer Turek to Scott
Gasperino. Jennifer is the daughter
of Mike and Karen Turek. Karen is
the club’s current secretary and she
with Mike served in prior years as
our Activities Chairpersons. Scott is
the son of Gary and Lynn Gasperino.
Gary is our club’s Vice President. A
wedding date has not been set but the
nuptials are expected to take place
next May. All of us wish the young
couple the best of luck and success in
their lives together.

Something Smelly About R.U.F. Outing
Photos and Words by Nicolas Liakas
A select few members of our R.U.F.
Committee on September 21, 2006 embarked
upon a guided (just for our group) two-hour
tour of the nationally recognized and honored
Las Virgenes Municipal Water District facilities,
and learned everything we always wanted to
know about wastewater and how it is used to
preserve and enhance our environment.
This award-winning facility uses state-ofthe-art technology to transform wastewater
into recycled water for use on public and
commercial landscaping. The plant is capable
of processing 16 million gallons per day (mgd),
yet currently averages 9 mgd. A State-certified
water quality laboratory at Tapia assures that
all Las Virgenes potable and recycled water
meets the most stringent State and Federal
guidelines.
Recycled water from Tapia is carried to
irrigate highway medians, golf courses, school
grounds, and landscapes through 52 miles of
water lines, 2 storage tanks, 3 reservoirs, and 3
pump stations.
We also learned about Rancho Las Virgenes.
Las Virgenes’ commitment to the environment
is demonstrated at this unique facility. A small
percentage of bio-solids from Tapia are applied
to fertilize feed crops on Rancho’s 91 acres of
farmland. The majority of the bio-solids go
through an automated composting process,
which produces about 20,000 cubic yards of
rich, agricultural soil amendment annually.
Over a 10-year period, Rancho will divert from
local landfills enough solids to fill a football
stadium to a height of 7-stories.
Our hosts for the morning were Deborah
Peters,
Communications
and
Media
Coordinator, and Jacqui Gambel, biologist.
Their joint presentation was illuminating
and entertaining. The discussion included
revelations of how potable and wastewater
are transported over the mountainous terrain
of the Malibu hills, how different geological
features dictate various fee rates, as well as a
brief history on why, and how, LVMWD was
formed in the 1960s.
24 NOVEMBER//DECEMBER 2006 PORSCHE CLUB OF AMERICA SANTA BARBARA REGION
After the tour, we traveled down to
the Malibu Fish House on PCH for lunch.
To get there, we drove along some of the
most beautiful roads in the Santa Monica
Mountains. Our main thoroughfare was Piuma
Road, a rugged but spectacular winding road
that climbs into the heavens before starting its
decent towards the Pacific Ocean. Still, there
were plenty of road repairs necessitated by the
heavy rains of two years ago. Once at our lunch
destination, seafood was of course the menu
item of choice, and we occupied a couple of
picnic tables on the patio overlooking the
beach.
If you are interested in attending a future
meeting of the R.U.F. committee, please
contact the undersigned by calling 818/7066016 or by e-mail at [email protected]
Hope to see you soon at one of our fun and
educational events.
Retired and Unemployed Folks // October
Stop the Porsche and smell the flowers!
Words by Nicolas Liakas
Photos by John Alfenito
A spectacularly sunny day greeted
members of SBR’s R.U.F. (Retired and
Unemployed Folks) Committee on October
18, 2006 as they embarked upon their latest
mid-week adventure. The destination was the
45 acre production facility of Gallup & Stribling
Orchids in Carpinteria. Yet another visual and
learning experience awaited.
The group convened its “meeting” at
the Sears parking lot in Santa Barbara and
followed a back roads route that included
the magnificent vistas from Mountain Drive
through the hills of Montecito. After traveling
along some of the most exclusive residential
areas, the drive proceeded south on Highway
101 to Santa Claus Lane in Summerland and
the entrance to the orchid farm.
Waiting for R.U.F.’s arrival was Bryant Hicks,
our tour guide for the day. Bryant started the
tour by presenting a ten minute video on the
history of Gallup & Stribling and some very
interesting tidbits about orchids. For example,
many of the varieties grown today in California
and Florida trace their ancestry to London,
England from where they were exported to
safety at the height of The Battle of England in
World War II. We also learned that orchid plants
take up to five years to develop, and that for
every 60,000 seedlings of a new variety only
ten (10) individual plants will be spectacular
enough to salvage and clone!
Bryant escorted us throughout the grounds
and provided details that transformed each of
us into an amateur botanist. But the best treat
was yet to come. We were introduced to John
Ernest, the man responsible for the “creative”
and reproductive end of the business. John
hosted our inspection of the laboratory where
new varieties are born every year and where
standards are propagated repeatedly. It was
fascinating to witness the lab technicians
housed in a sterile work environment, and the
container room where literally thousands of
seedlings are encouraged via climate and light
controls to sprout into marketable plants.
Lunch at the Padaro Grill was the next item
on the committee’s agenda. A short drive to
the other side of the freeway, and the group
arrived sharply at noon. Picnic tables under
pine trees were a welcomed spot from which
to gaze onto the blue waters of the Pacific. As
usual, there was the customary and expected
lively conversation accompanied by jokes and
laughter. There was even some light-hearted
gambling as Andy Gault wagered against Nick
Liakas on whether certain events occurred in
the early 1970s. Guess who lost the bet?

Hemmings Sports & Exotic Car
My Arrow Blue 930 makes the cover!
Words by Brad Hunt
Photos by Hemmings Sports & Exotic Car
As an early subscriber to Hemmings Sports
& Exotic Car magazine, I have always enjoyed
the magazine’s articles featuring actual owners’
collector cars. These articles provide great
insight into a car’s unique features, its technical
specifications, driving impressions, and always
include the owner’s story about the car. Every
month, I would look forward to
reading articles about a wide
range of collector cars such
as the Sunbeam Alpine, Alfa
Romeo Sprint Speciale, Ferrari
308, Lancia Fulvia, Triumph GT6,
and Acura NSX-T, just to name
a few. One day, while reading
the latest issue, it dawned on
me. Hemmings should do an
article on the Porsche 930
Turbo – and I had the perfect
930 Turbo to feature in the
article!
The next day, I sent the
editor an e-mail with a picture
of my car and suggested that
he write an article about
my beautiful and rare 1979
Arrow Blue Porsche 930
Turbo. The following day, I
received a response from
the editor, Craig Fitzgerald.
He said he thought my
car was gorgeous and
planned to have his West
Coast Editor, Jeff Koch
contact me to arrange a
photo shoot and to write
the article. I took the day
off for the photo shoot,
which occurred back
in January of this year.
Since my wife Judy and
I had been successfully
competing the car in
Zone 8 Concours, there
was not much that
needed to be done to get the car ready for the
photo shoot. Jeff started by taking nearly 200
detail and action shots of the car. I discussed
with him how this was the first Porsche that I
had ever owned and how I came to buy the
car. We next went out for a drive through the
Santa Monica Mountains passes so that Jeff
could drive the car and
write about his driving impressions. During
the drive, we stopped along the side of KananDume Road to take some beauty shots of the
car in the canyon. It was a long but fun day
sharing both my car and my thoughts about
the car with the writer.
Next came the long wait. I was told the
article would be published in the July or
August issue. The July issue came,
then the August
issue, then the
September issue,
and still no article
about my Porsche.
Finally, I received an
e-mail from Jeff with
some good news.
Not only would my
Porsche be featured
in the October issue,
but the car would
be on the cover! The
long wait was worth
it. Jeff did a great
job
photographing,
researching, and writing
about the 930, including
describing his driving
impressions of the car.
The 6-page article even
has a picture of me with
my own story about my
personal connection with
these great cars.
I sold my Arrow Blue
Porsche 930 to a PCA
member in Chicago in
April (and replaced it with
a 2002 Porsche 996 TwinTurbo), the article will
always provide me with a
fond memory of owning
this very special car.

It appears as if our first event will be
held in June. The event will be a Driver
Education held at Buttonwillow Raceway
Park. We will be partnering with the
Central Coast Chapter of the PCA on this
one – and the exact date is still up in the
air. Most likely, it will either be held on
the first or second Friday of the month (a
one-day event is perfect for novices, and
holding it on a Friday really brings down
the cost of the event). Watch this space
for more information in the next issue!
