The Flame Summer 2011 From the Board ... Upcoming Events July 13 CS Golf Outing July 30 CS Summerfest 2011: A Barnyard Barbecue at Lazy J Ranch September 10 & 11 Highland Heydays September 15 - 17 CS Garage Sale Introducing Roberta Lennie As Community Sharing’s range of services continues to grow, we’re thankful our volunteer base has expanded right along with it. During the past year, it became clear that someone with a good understanding of the many facets of our organization was needed to help fill staffing needs for our agency’s various departments, fundraising events and community projects. Roberta “Bert” Lennie fit the bill. Bert has been with Community sharing for over three years and has served as Volunteer Coordinator since late 2010. Although coordinating over 200 volunteers sounds a bit daunting, Bert says “Our volunteers are the best! I never have a problem finding people to help out. Our volunteers like to see that they are making a difference on a local level. They give their time not only to help our clients, but for the personal fulfillment they get from it.” Give Bert a call at 248-684-5238, and volunteer some of your time. Our motto for her is “If you need something done, Roberta’s the one!” Newsletter Via E-mail If you were mailed a copy of this newsletter AND you have given us your e-mail address, either we have an error in our system or your address has changed. It is a very simple way to support Community Sharing every time you shop at Meijer. The Flame Page 2 Volunteer Spotlight: Ruth Cripps In this issue, we focus our spotlight on Ruth Cripps who works in the clothing department. She meticulously goes through bag after bag of donated clothes to ensure nothing but the best is made available to our clients. Ruth has been married to Larry “Cap” for 48 years, has three grown children (Holly, Larry and Chad) and four adorable grandkids. She enjoys traveling, and has a home in Trenary in the U.P. where she grew up. Ruth and her husband have visited Panama and Alaska in their recent travels. Her other hobbies are gardening and adding to her very extensive and unique, ornamental egg collection. Ruth has been with Community Sharing for 2 1/2 years. She came in, applied to volunteer and we wasted no time in putting her talents to work. She enjoys the social aspect of volunteer work, but more importantly, it keeps her active and that activity helps her control her arthritis. According to clothing department supervisor, Jane Ann McCarthy, “Ruth is a pure joy to be around. She is dedicated, polite, hard working and most of all, she is thorough!” In fact, Jane Ann affectionately calls her “The Inspector.” Thank you Ruth for all your hard work. People like you keep the Community Sharing wheels turning. Third Round of Budgeting Classes Under Way The third round of budgeting classes is being held in June. Presented in two sessions to coincide with usual Pantry hours, clients can attend class and pick up food without added transportation expense. Those who attend both classes get an extra visit to our Pantry. Another great incentive is a free checking account at Kensington Valley Community Credit Union (KVCCU), regardless of credit history, with the possibility of adding incremental benefits of a debit card and modest line of credit in future months. Matt Jenkins, of KVCCU, has been on hand to fully discuss details of the credit union offer. Presented by Amy Parten, of GreenPath Debt Solutions, the classes are informal, conversational and upbeat, yet packed with useful information and ways to look at our own financial situations from a fresh perspective. In November 2010, fifteen clients completed the classes, and in March 2011 there were nine. Twenty-eight are registered for this June’s classes. The next round is tentatively scheduled for the fall. You do not need to be a client to attend, but preregistration is required. Pantry and KVCCU benefits do not apply to non-clients. Community Sharing Aids with Food Distribution On June 2, Community Sharing partnered with Gleaners Food Bank and the Huron Valley Schools to provide food to families in the community demonstrating the most need. We distributed one hundred and seventyfive 20 lb food boxes, 10 lb bags of potatoes and 10 lbs of chicken to one hundred and forty-two families in the school district. The food was picked up at Community Sharing by family members that were given a voucher from the school. Mr. Dave Duey from Gleaners Mobile Food Pantry was on hand to assists with the distribution along with ten Community Sharing volunteers. The program was a success and will continue each month during the summer. Community Sharing is also a designated U.S. Department of Agriculture TEFAP (Temporary Emergency Food Assistance Program) distribution site. The TEFAP food is distributed four times per year by Oakland Livingston Human Service Agency (OLHSA). Each quarter, we receive enough food for 312 orders. The food is packaged by volunteers and then distributed to clients during the months of March, June, September and December. On Thursday, June 2, Community Sharing received its latest food shipment from OLHSA. The Flame Page 3 Community Sharing 7th Annual Golf Fundraiser Our Annual Community Sharing Golf Outing is fast approaching and it’s always a good time. Our golfers will be treated to a continental breakfast, hot dogs, chips and beverages “at the turn” and a tasty luncheon following the tournament. There will be door prizes and a raffle during the luncheon, and severa contests during the tournament. Have a high handicap? We don’t care, we want you there anyway. If you’re not a golfer, you can still join in on the fun as a spectator and attend the luncheon. Tickets for the luncheon are available for $25 and you are eligible for the door prizes and raffle. A sponsorship is an excellent way to advertise your business and show support for your community. There are three sponsorship levels ($100, $250, $500); see the reverse side of this page for details and sponsorship form. To register for the golf outing, please fill out the registration form on the back side of this page, and send it to Community Sharing to secure your spot in the tournament or your seat at the luncheon. The donations for the sale have increased significantly (as has the quality of many donations), and therefore, the revenue from the sale reached a new high. We want to thank our volunteer staff and Boy Scout Troop 272 for their hard work setting up, keeping the tables organized, managing checkout, tearing down and packing up at the end. Over 1,000 man hours were needed for this huge sale. We are very fortunate to have such a loyal and hard working volunteers. This literally could not be done without their dedication and tenacity. Again, thank you all! Now we are gearing up for our Fall Garage Sale. Donations can be dropped off at our office Monday through Wednesday from 10 am to 1 pm. No Christmas trees, televisions without a converter box, computers or stuffed animals please. Also, we cannot accept items on the Consumer Product Safety Commission recall list. The fall Garage Sale is scheduled for September 15 - 17. Highland ‘HeyDays’ Festival Planned The Highland Business Association is hosting an outdoor festival September 10 and 11 in downtown Highland. Saturday’s events include a 5k run, a “Horsing Around in Highland” square dance, a live DJ, a chili cook-off, beer tents, raffles and auctions. Sunday, they will have a Pet A Palooza street fair with arts and crafts, pet photo booths, an animal magic show, a parade and will feature the Rock And Roll K9’s show (pet agility choreographed to music). It sounds like a good time for the whole family. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Community Sharing. This event is still in the planning phase. Once the event plans are finalized, information will be posted on the Highland Business website at www.highlandbusinessassociation.com . More Recipes Needed for CS Cookbook As mentioned in our last newsletter, Community Sharing is putting together a cookbook by and for our local community. We received many wonderful recipes, but not enough to fill to complete the cookbook and go to print. If you have a favorite recipe that you would like to share, please submit it for consideration. Please send recipes to [email protected] and be a part of this special project.
