Asphalt Division
Continues to Expand

C
arolina Sunrock opened its first asphalt plant
in 1993, which was located in Durham, North
Carolina. Since that time, the Asphalt division
has continued to expand to locations in Wake
and Granville counties. In August 2015, Sunrock
opened its fifth asphalt plant, which is located
at the Butner Quarry. Sunrock acquired this
2007 asphalt plant from AlMix. In late 2013, a
Sunrock team traveled to Florida to dismantle the
plant. Sunrock trucks transported the majority
of the plant to Butner. However, because the
baghouse in Florida was too small AlMix agreed
to sell and ship to Sunrock a larger baghouse from
Albuquerque, New Mexico. Additionally, due to
Sunrock’s need for increased storage, the two 100ton storage silos that were purchased from AlMix
were replaced with two Stansteel 240-ton silos,
which increased our storage from 200 to 480 tons
allowing for maximization of the daily production
capacity in the plant. The start-up has been quite
successful. One of the first jobs was 8,873 tons
of NCDOT Warm Mix Asphalt for the NCDOT US
158 resurfacing project in Person County. Growth
in the Asphalt division continues. In November, a
Sunrock team was sent to Arkansas to dismantle
and move an additional asphalt plant that will
become our sixth asphalt plant. Plans are in the
works for a seventh asphalt plant. This growth
in our Asphalt division facilitates the capacity of
Sunrock to enter into new markets, expanding
our customer base and increasing our service to
existing customers.

C
arolina Sunrock’s Contracting Division has been working on the campus upgrades
and expansion for the new headquarters of Blue Cross Blue Shield of NC (BCBS)
at University Place in Durham. This project consists of a 75,000 square foot building
expansion, which more than
doubled the 73,000 square
foot office building, and a new
multi-level parking garage for
629 vehicles. To date, Sunrock
has provided over 750 cubic
yards of Ready Mix concrete
for contractors throughout
various stages of the job, and
over 3,000 tons of Hot Mix
asphalt for various parking lot
renovations, new parking areas,
and roadways that surround
the new structures.
Working along with Balfour Beatty, the general contractor on site, Sunrock recently
constructed a pedestrian improvement project that ties in the new building and new
parking garage to the existing
office complex. Existing entrances
were demolished in order to
reconfigure the new roadway
entrance and parking areas. The
work consisted of the installation
of concrete sidewalks, curb and
gutter, and a roadway entrance.
This work will increase safety,
and improve the flow of both
vehicle and pedestrian traffic to
and from the BCBS campus. The
challenge for this project was to
avoid the existing web of utilities
and fiber optic cables that were
present just a few feet below the
surface, and complete the work
on time with no disruption to the
current operations. Additionally,
during construction, the existing employee access and parking had to remain open
at all times. Sunrock’s Superintendent Marcus Ingram and Foreman Preston Laney
exceeded the expectations of both BCBS and Balfour Beatty by completing the
project on time. Also, Marcus and Preston were commended for their coordination,
cleanliness of the work area, and the quality of Sunrock’s finished product.
We look forward to building our relationship with Balfour Beatty and BCBS on
future projects.

Village at the Park

V
illage at the Park is one of Pulte Homes newest subdivisions
located off Green Level Church Road in Cary, NC. Carolina
Sunrock is supplying Ocmulgee Concrete Construction with
concrete and stone for this subdivision. To date Sunrock has
shipped over 2,600 cubic yards of concrete from its RDU Plant
and provided over 1,000 tons of stone from its Butner Quarry
for this subdivision. Sunrock also provides concrete and stone
on many other jobs for Ocmulgee in order to help them meet
the demands of their commercial and residential jobs.
Sunrock’s growing relationship over the years with Ocmulgee
starts at the top with owner Cary Williams and CEO Scott Greene.

S
atterfield Paving Inc. is a grading and paving
contractor based in Durham, North Carolina.
Satterfield Paving and Carolina Sunrock have been
doing business together for over 30 years. Recently,
Satterfield Paving and Sunrock teamed up to do an
upgrade of the old Pepsi plant on the Western Bypass
in Durham. The project consisted of converting the
former Pepsi facility into self-storage units. Sunrock
provided all the exterior concrete for the storage
units. Additionally, the property owner decided to
have the entire parking lot paved in concrete, which
was furnished to Satterfield Paving by Sunrock. In
total, Satterfield Paving purchased over 1,300 yards
of concrete for this project.
Satterfield Paving conducts a wide variety of residential and commercial construction projects, ranging from
subdivisions to storage units. We appreciate the relationship that has been built over the years and look forward to
continue being Satterfield Paving’s preferred supplier.

Sunrock Receives Ten Safety Awards from
N.C. Department of Labor

T
he N.C. Department of Labor’s Safety Awards Program
recognizes private and public firms throughout the
state that achieve and maintain good safety records. The
program is designed to stimulate interest in accident
prevention and to promote safety in the workplace by
providing an incentive to employers and employees to
maintain a safe and healthful workplace. In operation
since 1946, the program now extends to more than 3,300
firms, and about 2,000 awards are presented annually.
To qualify for the Annual Safety Award, a firm must
have had no fatalities during the calendar year at the
site or location for which the award was given AND have
maintained an incidence rate at least 50 percent below the
average for its particular industry group.

Sunrock to Celebrate 30 Years in North Carolina

2015 marks Sunrock’s 30th
anniversary in North Carolina
and 66 years in business. We
are proud to call North Carolina
home to our three quarries, six
concrete plants, six asphalt plants,
and contracting business. In
thirty years, the company has
undergone tremendous growth and
development that would not have
been possible without the visionary
leadership of our Chairman, Bryan
Pfohl, as well as each employee who
has contributed to the continued
success of the organization.
When Bryan Pfohl began operations
in 1985 at the Butner quarry it
was nothing more than a small
abandoned pit opened solely for
the construction of the nearby
segment of I-85. Now that site
totals in excess of 730 acres and the
plant produces 1,000 tons per hour.
It has extensive reserves that will
last well into the next century.
In 1990 Sunrock opened its first
asphalt plant in North Carolina
at the Durham (MDC) location.
Sunrock furthered its vertical
integration model by entering the
concrete business in 1993 with the
opening of its Durham concrete
plant. In 1996 the Butner concrete
plant came online and in 1998 the
North Raleigh became our third
operational concrete plant. Today
Sunrock has the reputation as the
preferred supplier in our market
for both commercial and residential
work.
2002 was a busy year! The New
York operations were sold and
reinvestment continued in North
Carolina. In the spirit of innovating
creative solutions, Sunrock began
utilizing the twin steer front axle
concept in its concrete mixer fleet.
At time, this type of vehicle was
already popular in Canada and parts
of Europe. Sunrock’s leadership
worked with suppliers to design and
obtain approval for utilization of
this type of vehicle on US roadways.
With two turning axles on the truck,
the vehicle is able to transport a
full legal 10-yard load of concrete.
Twinsteers are also considered
safer to operate given their even
dispersion of weight.
In 2002 Sunrock grew through the
acquisition of the Blalock Paving
Company. This acquisition gave way
to the creation of the RDU facility
located near the RDU International
Airport. Sunrock redesigned the
site and constructed both a concrete
and hot mix asphalt plant on the
property to better serve the RaleighDurham market and surrounding
areas. These two plants became
operational in 2003. In 2003 the
first stone was crushed at Sunrock’s
second quarry in Kittrell, NC off US1. This quarry is located on a 600acre site and has extensive reserves.
2005 brought more change as
Sunrock grew through acquisition.
This time the acquisition was
Nello Teer’s Durham asphalt plant.
Shortly thereafter Sunrock opened
a concrete plant at its Kittrell
location. Asphalt plants were
added at the Kittrell and North
Raleigh locations in 2006 and 2007
respectively to improve our ability
to service surrounding markets. Our
third quarry was opened in 2007 in
Roxboro, North Carolina, just south
of the Virginia border.

presently known as the Operations
and Development Center, primarily
house our contracting, dispatch,
human resources, and safety
departments. Additionally, this
location serves as a training center
for various employee training and
development programs.
In 2011 we again expanded through
acquisition of a site in Zebulon, NC
near the Carolina Mudcats Stadium.
That site, known as our Eastern
Wake Facility, is home to our sixth
concrete plant. In February 2012 we
further diversified and entered the
contracting business.
2014 marked the organization’s
65th anniversary since its inception
in Buffalo, New York following
World War II. 2015 brings us to 30
years in business in North Carolina!
We marked this occasion with the
opening of our fifth asphalt plant at
the Butner location where the North
Carolina chapter of Sunrock’s story
began to unfold 30 years ago. Plans
are in the works for a sixth and
seventh asphalt plant. This state has
been good to us and we are proud
to call it home. We would like to
extend our thanks and gratitude to
all who had a hand in helping the
organization reach this milestone.
It is quite an accomplishment.

Todd is a former member of the US Navy. He is
currently attending Wake Tech and plans to transfer
to UNC Chapel Hill in the fall as an Economics Major.
Todd hopes that his experience with Sunrock will help
him understand the concrete and asphalt industries.

Nathaniel plans to attend Wake Tech this fall, and
then transfer to UNC Charlotte in the fall of 2016. He
is currently working in the shop and hopes to major
in Mechanical or Civil Engineering. Nathaniel hopes
to apply what he learns about quarry operations, and
shop management to his future endeavors.

Gulnara received degrees in History and Economics
while in Russia. She recently received her Human
Resources Associate degree from Wake Tech. Gulnara
provided support to the HR and Legal departments.

Bryson is currently attending ECU. He is majoring in
Construction Management. Bryson hopes that his
experience with Sunrock will enhance his career in
the future.
Zach is currently attending NC State. He is majoring in
Business Management. Zach worked in the Butner
QC Lab.
Zachary Pegram
Eric is currently attending ECU. He is a rising junior
majoring in Construction Management. Eric assisted
on the Skipper Bowles project, and worked with the
paving crew.
Ashok is currently attending NC State University as a
Civil Engineering major. He worked as a Field Services
Intern. Ashok hopes to expand his knowledge of soil
analyzation and construction management.
