I’m delighted to confirm Peter
Gloor has accepted our proposal for Honorary Membership of the club. Peter and Val
will join us at our meeting on
October 9, so we may collectively recognise and celebrate
his Honorary Membership at
that time. Peter has been a
club member for 22 years
during which time he has distinguished himself by continuous meritorious service in the
furtherance of the ideals of
Rotary, including being club
president in 1995-1996 and
for a good part of 1996-1997.
He was awarded a PHF in
June, 1999.
Last week’s speaker, Sifu
(Teacher) Jim Wilkinson, Samford’s Chinese martial arts
authority, spoke of the philosophy and understanding behind
these skills. His address was
both insightful and inspirational.
This week, our speaker will be
Kim Edwards. She is a podiatrist
whose business is opposite John
Scott Park, right here on Main
Street, Samford. She will be
explaining the vital importance
of “healthy feet”.
On September 25, District Governor Dai Mason will be with us
on his official visit. I’m also
pleased to confirm that Dai will
be accompanied by his wife,
Sue. She will be joining us “in
attendance” at our Board meeting which will start at 6.00 pm.
Sue’s favourite charity is Wild
Life Rescue and Care. Prior to
September 25, the Board will
consider a financial contribution
for this.
Meanwhile, Jan and I will be
away for the next couple of
weeks. Immediate Past President Ian will be kindly filling in
for me while we’re away. Thanks
Ian.
Alexandria

BC by Alexander the Great.

Just to let you know that we haven't forgotten you all and have been following the club news via the Bulletin - keep up the
good work!
After hitting Port Douglas we said goodbye to the Pacific, turned left and I can't say followed the dotted line but rather
headed off towards the Gulf. At Kurumba Marina showed all the men up with her catch of Blue Salmon which filled our
little freezer and we're still enjoying.
We crossed the Gulf to Boorooloola and are now in Kununurra making the most of web and telephone connectivity.
I had an enjoyable 'makeup' at Townsville South West and received a banner on behalf of the Samford Club. Booked in
for another dinner with Kununurra Club tonight before heading bush tomorrow. Wyndam, the Gib River, Broome and
hello Indian Ocean then turn the compass back to Brisbane.
Enjoying this beautiful wide open country of ours but looking forward to catching up with everyone on our return

Why we support ROMAC
The wonderful news is that our little smiling Larisah Barikoa is well and able to return to the Solomon Islands on Tuesday
departing at 10am. No doubt the very patient and kind Aunt Mirriam will be glad to see outside of the Royal Childrens
Hospital.
Larissa must stay in Honiara for 3 weeks until her medication is complete.
She will be under the care of Dr. Carol Tittiana, Paediatrician, who cared for her before she came to Brisbane. She can
then return to her village by boat.
Larisah has come a long way since arriving on June 24, 2012, laying in the arms of Dr. Alex Munamua, so ill, paralysed,
with a brain abscess, which covered 1/3 of her brain, the result of a nail penetrating her skull and into her brain 4 months
earlier.
MRI scans & intervention drainage plus antiobiotic abscess washes were regular occurrence. Finally the remainder of the
abscess was surgically removed. It was feared Larisah's speech would be impaired and it was slightly that night in Intensive Care, but the next day when I was reading her a book about a star, and she had learned the song at Hospital School,
so we sang "Twinkle little Star" over and over - I was so happy to hear those words coming from her mouth.
Larisah has never had a doll or toys, but she now has a collection of books, dolls & trinkets, which she was worried when
Aunty Mirriam told her she could not take them home because they only had 1 small bag - she cried.
Tomorrow, I will be taking a bag for Larisah to take home her toys.
Initially, we were so worried for this lifeless little girl and her suffering, but it was not long before her beautiful eyes began to twinkle and we saw her beautiful smile - a gorgeous little girl who thrives on love and kisses.
Firstly Larisah was cared for by Denise Schellbach whom she adored, until Denise went on holidays. It was then Judy
Percy offered to help me. Of course, with Judys kind and friendly nature, it was not long before Larisah smothered her
with hugs & kisses. Both these ladies are treasures to ROMAC and I feel so blessed to have them on my team.
Before Larisah arrived in Brisbane, Dr. Carol Tittiana's little girl Juanita, 3 years, became ill and she and Dr. Carol were
taken to Canberra where Juanita underwent surgery to remove her kidney.
Upon their return to Solomon Island, Dr. Carol & Juanita transited overnight in Brisbane with friends, and also visited
Larisah and her aunty, Mirriam, in the Royal Childrens Hospital. Dr. Carol was amazed at Larisaqh's recovery.
