GREAT ACTIVITY TODAY
Our visitors today were our speaker, Daniel Rossman, Judy Nelson prior Rotarian, and Earline El
Middleton. Daniel is with the Wilderness Society, Los Angeles Office. Daniel spoke of the wilderness
areas in our nearby San Gabriel Mountains. He holds an MA in Communication Studies and a BS in
Political Science, both from Florida State U. The message with the Wilderness website address is “Go
Outside and Play.”
Jim Nakano was presented with a crown for his Donut Man brand being more popular with the KCET
public than any of the opponents in Southern California which were put up against him. Some with big
names too. What is next for the Donut Man to conquer? Oprah Winfrey. Pictured left is President
Gary presenting our speaker with the Gumby character plus the book certificate for the library. Gumby
is going to have perfect attendance for the Rotary year if Gary has his way. The club welcomed back
past president Thom Hill, from a bout of illness, Pat Janes and Gene Morrill, from their vacation
wanderings far and wide. Pat and Norm from as far away as Morocco, and Gene from the Northwest
Territories promoting the mechanics shop business.
THE FOCOMETER PROJECT
The current session of the Focometer Project was held last Saturday at the La Fetra Senior Center, in the parlor of the
residence, containing soft furniture and a large picture window with the original wavy glass in it. In this comfortable
setting Sheila Gutierrez organized her crew, including Jo Ann Billotti, Guadalupe Corder, Bob Verhoef, new
member Jill Taura, a volunteer named Nancy Yun and former member Craig Triance. For the benefit of the new
ones Sheila announced about the process, “There are a small number of things that must be done exactly right.” Your
editor was one of the original trainees, but time has reduced my capacity to be of much use there, other than to write
about it. The first patient showed up at 10 o’clock sharp and the process began. This worthy program has provided
hundreds of people with prescription glasses, 17 more this session.
While reading on LinkedIn recently I
came across this quote from a new
Rotarian named Raymond Griswold,
about being busy.
“Rotary hasn't displaced the other
irons in the fire but has added a new
dimension to life itself.”

THE BIRTHDAY/ANNIVERSARY PEOPLE
Keith Hilliard, for his birthday on the
23rd; Maria Kypreos, for her and
Jimmy’s 39th anniversary on the 29th;
and Bob Verhoef for his and Carol’s
49th!! anniversary on the 18th.
Gene Morrill reported that more cars have come in for our
“Donate a Car” program, which is very good news for Glendora
Charities, and Kathleen Hatcher reported that they provided
pizza for 107 kids who were interested in RYLA, and although all
the 107 didn’t show up, somehow the pizza all disappeared.
Volunteers are needed from our membership to help with RYLA.
Jane Bock and Craig Henderson represented our membership
with President Gary at the District Assembly last Saturday, and
both gave informative reports about the proceedings.
A ROTARY MOMENT
The first Rotary Club ran into opposition
with the restroom project in Chicago in
1907. Tavern owners opposed it as taking
away a main reason their patrons came
into their premises, and department store
owners said that ladies could visit the
stores that provided restrooms for them.
It was a major social change the club was
proposing, and merchants were opposed
to the idea. Paul Harris, as president of
the club, used what influence he had to
convince the city fathers that it was a
good idea. The battle took two years and
finally the project was a reality. The city
YMCA head stated, “The Rotary Club of
Chicago has now shown reason for its
existence.”

THE PEACE PALACE 100th ANNIVERSARY
Andrew Carnegie was the main contributor when the Peace Palace in the Hague was
constructed in 1913. Over the years it has served many functions, guided by the Carnegie
UK Trust, represented at the anniversary by Andrew Carnegie’s great grandson, William
Thompson. The United Nations has maintained offices there, international judicial institutions
are based in the Peace Palace, including The World Court. Philanthropist Ted Turner made a
gift of one billion dollars to the United Nations, and a UN trust was established to manage the
gift. Past President Sajuki Tanaka represented Rotary in the celebration, speaking about the
11 year old Rotary Peace Centers, declaring, “There is no other program like ours in the
world.”
