Oceans center could be major visitor
and education site along sea walk
A 14,000 square foot facility focused on oceans could
be part of the long-planned pedestrian promenade that
eventually will border the Gastineau Channel from the downtown cruise ship dock
to the bridge. The proposed Juneau Oceans Center, designed by Minch Ritter of
Voelckers Architects, would cost about $8 million, according to one of its promoters, Bob Janes. The vision for the facility is to provide a world-class , yearround interpretive center with focus on Southeast Alaskan maritime ecology and
species. Janes is working with an advisory group that hopes to raise corporate and
private funding in the next two years to support construction of the site which
would extend west from Egan Drive and offer rooftop views of the channel. Janes
says the facility would connect to local school programs and offer “citizen science
activities,” which visitors could apply in their
home community. The Juneau Ocean Center’s
vision is to connect with research to create
positive actions supporting healthy oceans.
