Aust had their home decorated beautifully and the atmosphere was relaxed and

along. and theft some gifts
changed hands over and
over. Gaylord Whipple had
a bottle of Bailey’s Irish
Cream and a sampler of
European Beers both stolen.
What he ended up with was
so lame your Editor cannot
remember! Al Gutierrez
was a fixture in front of the
tree replacing gift after gift!

and Dave Hackett opened
a heavy, square art object
which was left on display all
evening in hope it might be

We were pleased to have with us at our December
2nd meeting Vivek Jain, M.D., a Neurologist from the
University of California Irvine, who gave a presentation on
stroke awareness and preventative measures.
A stroke is defined as vascular disturbance to the Brain tissue. An Ischemic
stroke involves a loss of adequate blood
supply, such as when a blood vessel is
blocked by a clot or embolus of some
kind, or some other disturbance
(such as disease blocking the vessels of
the carotid artery). With such a injury,
the damage to the brain tissue results
from oxygen depravation causing cell
death. Two-thirds of strokes are ischemic.
In the Hemorrhagic stroke the brain cells death results
from the blood physically invading the tissue. One-third of
strokes are hemorrhagic.
Non Assessing stroke Risk: Risk markers/factors for
a first stroke were classified according to potential for
modification; nonmodifiable, modifiable and potentially
modifiable.
Nonmodifiable include age, sex, low brith weight,race/
ethnicity and genetic predisposition.
Modifiable risk factors include high blood pressure,
exposure to cigarette smoke, diabetes, atrial fibrillation
(and certain other cardiac conditions), cholesterol and
other lipid disorders, coronary artery stenosis, sickle cell
disease, post-menopausal hormone therapy, poor diet.
physical inactivity and obesity.
Less well-documented factors (“possibly modifiable”)
include the metabolic syndrome, excessive alcohol
consumption, drug abuse, use of oral contraceptives,
sleep-disordered breathing, migraine and others.
Stroke risk doubles at age 65, and every 10 years
thereafter. An evolving stroke is a medical emergency and
minutes count. Call 911, and jot down on paper the time
the episode began (both the paramedic and the hospital
doctors need to determine the time line. Do not waste time
worrying if the problem might be serious.
Symptoms: Muscle weakness in face, arms and legs;
sudden difficulty speaking sensibly (gibberish); paralysis of
facial muscles (smile lopsided, forehead lifting not
symmetrical); Headache - Sudden onset, the severest
headache you have ever experienced; Motor weakness in
muscles - hold hands out in front and after several
seconds, one side may lower and rotate; Loss of sensation
in face or extremity; Sudden visual impairment - loss of
vision or eye coordination (double vision).

The holidays are here, and once again the TustinSanta Ana Rotary Club got the festivities started
with their annual Christmas party. For the first time in many years, the party was
not held at the home of Jill and Don Leach. But,
we were thrilled to have Jill join us. The group
of 40+ gathered at the home of Gerry and Diane
Aust. Everyone enjoyed delicious food, ample libations,
and scrumptious desserts. But, as usual, the highlight of the evening was
the “Steal or Don’t Steal” gift activity. The talking Santa with cherry red cheeks
reciting “Twas the Night Before Christmas” was a
big hit, as was the snowman Advent calendar. However, there was a gift that was never stolen
and was left behind by the owners. Hmm-m-m??? Who could that be?
