At 18, he has a rare eye disorder that causes his vision to diminish and eventually disappear. There is a treatment for his condition but Medicaid does not cover it and his family had no funds to pay for it. Jontavius has no other options, he will lose his vision. Bring in Rotary. When the Sebring, Sebring Sunrise, Highlands County and Avon Park Rotary Clubs heard of this, they would not stand by and let a young, 18 year old man lose his sight to a treatable condition. Together they raised the funds needed for this treatment. We are happy to report that Jontavius has had that procedure and his sight is improving and is expected to continue to improve. Thank you to these clubs for stepping up and changing a young man’s life! The greatest thing about this story is that it is only one of hundreds of stories just like it from clubs all around our district. Each club has it’s own stories and it’s own “Jontavius Tucker”. I am very proud to be a Rotarian and very proud to wear my Rotary pin. It is my badge of honor. The next time someone asks you what that Rotary pin you wear stands for, tell them is a reminder of all the lives you are changing and saving here in your own community and around the world. Be Rotary Proud! Thank you, Tom That Was The Week That Was (Edited) By Lesley Zajac The RCNT 2016-2017 All Stars Club and District Governor Installation Celebration is on June 24 at 6:00 PM at Tampa Palms G&CC. Please go online on DaCdb to register and pay for the event. There will be no morning meeting on June 24. Brice Wolford and his board will be installed, as will 2016-2017 District Governor Joyce Gunter The 2016 District 6890 Conference was last weekend in Orlando and what an event it was. In addition to taking care of District business, fun-filled free time was available for everyone to spend time together enjoying the facilities at the hotel. My person favorites - American Pie and the hot tub!! Many awards were presented on both Friday and Saturday and I am very happy to announce that the Rotary Club of New Tampa received the Club Communications Award (large club) (this covers everything from Facebook/social media, the weekly bulletin, this weekly email, press releases/PR, etc.) for getting the word out to club members and the community. So this award is truly for a group effort by many club members. RCNT also received the District Governor's Choice Award for a Local Project (the all accessible playground at Rotary's Camp Florida). Again this was the result of efforts by many, many club members in the face of some true difficulties. AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST, RCNT received the 2015-2016 Rotary International Presidential Citation Gold Level "for helping Rotary make a difference in the lives of people all over the world." I was honored to accept these awards on behalf of all of the members of this amazing club. Our successes this year are because of YOU! If you are a Facebook user, check out some of the amazing photographs from the weekend taken by Craig Miller, Bob Thompson, Kathleen Novak and others (plus a few crummy ones from me!) We had 12 members of this club in attendance at the Conference. Great representation! The USF Rotaract Club was also awarded the Presidential Citation!! 3 To find a Rotary Club worldwide, go to: https://www.rotary.org/en/search/club-finder.
